B 18 years ago, a 14-year-old boy from Kasungu district in Malawi was forced to drop out of school for lack of fees. At the same time, a severe famine was destroying his village, claiming people’s lives and leaving desperation in its wake. This was a situation to break the strongest of minds but William Kamkwamba did not give up. Young as he was, he knew that education was where his future lay. He found hope in the library and feasted on the knowledge that he harvested from its books. It was there that he came across a science textbook entitled Using Energy. He learned that he could generate electricity using wind. The youngster realized that, if mastered, this power could help his village in exceptional ways. Armed with determination and an iron will, the teenager set out to build a windmill out of random materials from a scrapyard (垃圾场). Though his outside world was collapsing to dust, the youngster did not hesitate about his purpose. He defended himself from all doubt and criticism. He worked tirelessly until his dream of bringing electricity to his village became reality. Soon, he was caught in the center of media attention that took him to new places that he would never have stepped on without his invention. In his village, the dust has not settled yet and the winds of change continue to blow across the land. Windmills pump water to irrigate crops, sweeping away another period of hunger. William’s former primary school boasts new and stronger buildings, thanks to the help of well-wishers and the villagers’ united efforts. What seemed like a hopeless situation has been turned into an inspirational story that motivates each and every one of us, persuading us that no misfortune is set in stone. William refused to be a school drop-out forever. He sought solutions for his problems and continued fighting even when the going got tough. He was able to rise above poverty to become a graduate from one of America’s best universities, Dartmouth College. 24.What inspired William to bring electricity to his village? A.His realization of the impact of electricity. B.His awareness of the role of education. C.The science textbook entitled Using Energy. D.The severe famine destroying his village. 25.What can we learn from paragraph 3? A.All people didn’t support William’s dream at first. B.The public had little interest in William’s invention. C.The invention enabled William to make a big fortune. D.The windmill is energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. 26.What does the underlined words “set in stone”in the last paragraph mean? A.Visible. B.Avoidable. C.Unchangeable. D.Unpredictable. 27.What message does the author want to convey in this story? A.Knowledge feasts mind and education promises wealth. B.Necessity inspires invention and hardship makes heroes. C.Criticism promotes success and doubt facilitates creation. D.Adversity motivates inspiration and support pushes solutions. C A small study published Wednesday documents significantly restored hearing in five of six kids treated in China. “Hearing loss is hard to recover. That’s why we were always trying to develop a therapy(疗法),” said Zheng-Yi Chen, a senior author of the study. Globally, 34 million children have deafness or hearing loss, and genes are responsible for up to 60% of cases. All the children in the experiments have a condition that accounts for 2% to 8% of inherited(遗传的) deafness. It’s caused by mutations(变异) in a gene responsible for an inner ear protein called otoferlin, which helps hair cells transmit sound to the brain. The therapy of Chen’s team delivers a functional copy of that gene to the inner ear during a surgery. It caused no major side effects. They observed the children for about six months and captured patients’ progress in videos. One shows a little girl 13 weeks after treatment repeating father, mother, grandmother, sister and “I love you.” They don’t know why the treatment didn’t work in one of them. But the five others, who previously had complete deafness, can now hear a regular conversation and talk with others. Prior results from other researches have been just as positive. The Philadelphia hospital reported that their patient, Aissam Dam, is now able to hear his father’s voice and cars on the road. Dr. John Germiller, who led the research in Philadelphia said, “His hearing is improved from a state of complete deafness with no sound at all to the level of mild hearing loss.” Columbia University’s Dr. Lawrence Lustig said, “Although the children in these studies don’t wind up with perfect hearing, even a mild hearing loss recovery in these kids is pretty astonishing.” Still, he added, “Many questions remain, such as how long the therapies will last and whether hearing will continue to improve in the kids.” 28.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about? A.The result of Chen’s therapy. B.The impact of gene mutations. C.The trouble of curing hearing loss. D.The analysis of children’s deafness. 29.What do most participants in the two researches have in common? A.They showed positive response to the therapy. B.Their power of speech was partially regained. C.Their improvements were recorded by videos. D.They had mild hearing loss after the treatment. 30.What is Dr. Lawrence Lustig’s attitude toward the therapy? A.Dismissive. B.Objective. C.Doubtful. D.Unclear. 31.Which of the following is the best title for the text? A.Gene Therapy: A Hope for the Deaf B.Deaf Children: A Concern of Society C.Chen’s Research: A Breakthrough in Surgery D.Inherited Deafness: A Challenge for Treatment D Is forgiveness against our human nature? To answer our question, we need to ask a further question: What is the essence of our humanity? For the sake of simplicity, people consider two distinctly different views of humanity. The first view involves dominance and power. In an early paper on the psychology of forgiveness, Droll (1984) made the interesting claim that humans’ essential nature is more aggressive than forgiving allows. Those who forgive are against their basic nature, much to their harm. In his opinion, forgivers are compromising their well-being as they offer mercy to others, who might then take advantage of them. The second view involves the theme of cooperation, mutual respect, and even love as the basis of who we are as humans. Researchers find that to fully grow as human beings, we need both to receive love from and offer love to others. Without love, our connections with a wide range of individuals in our lives can fall apart. Even common sense strongly suggests that the will to power over others does not make for harmonious interactions. For example, how well has slavery worked as a mode of social harmony? From this second viewpoint of who we are as humans, forgiveness plays a key role in the biological and psychological integrity of both individuals and communities because one of the outcomes of forgiveness, shown through scientific studies, is the decreasing of hate and the restoration of harmony. Forgiveness can break the cycle of anger. At least to the extent the people from whom you are estranged (不和的) accept your love and forgiveness and are prepared to make the required adjustments. Forgiveness can heal relationships and reconnect people. As an important note, when we take a classical philosophical perspective, we see the distinction between potentiality and actuality. We are not necessarily born with the capacity to forgive, but instead with the potential to learn about it and to grow in our ability to forgive. The actuality of forgiving, in real situations, develops with practice. 32.What is Droll’s idea about forgiveness? A.People should offer mercy to others. B.Aggressive people should learn to forgive. C.Forgiveness depends on the nature of humanity. D.People who forgive can have their own welfare affected. 33.What does the example in Paragraph 3 illustrate? A.To fight is to grow. B.To give is to receive. C.To forgive is to abuse. D.To dominate is to harm. 34.What is the writer’s attitude toward forgiveness? A.Favorable. B.Reserved. C.Objective. D.Skeptical. 35.What message does the last paragraph convey? A.Forgiveness is in our nature. B.Forgiveness grows with time. C.It takes practice to forgive. D.Actuality is based on potentiality. At first glance, it seems to be Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer’s masterpiece Girl with a Pearl Earring. 36 Wearing two glowing earrings, there’s a slightly inhuman shade of red on the girl’s face. Look strange? 37 Chosen from 3,482 submitted images based on the Vermeer masterpiece, the Al-generated work was displayed at the Mauritshuis Museum in the Netherlands in March. The designer looked on the experience of literally replacing the famous painting by one of his AI images crazy and completely surreal. 38 Though Mauritshuis press officer Boris de Munnick insisted that it was a nice picture and a creative process, many people questioned whether it could be called art and if it was qualified to be shown in the museum gallery. 39 It was regarded as a disrespect for the masterpiece of Vermeer and also for any working artist. In fact, this is not the first time that people have debated AI’s role in creativity. 40 But the technology has now become widely available for regular everyday use and the practice of using AI image generators to make art has become more common. A.Coming from a museum, it’s really embarrassing. B.However, the AI image raised a fierce argument. C.But look more closely and you may find something different about it. D.One common concern is whether AI-generated works break copyright laws. E.Dutch artist Iris Compiet described the image on display as almost Frankenstein-ish. F.It’s actually an image made by Berlin-based designer Julian van Dieken using artificial intelligence. G.The emergence of such AI works is believed by many to weaken the enthusiasm of artists with creative skills. In 1985, Vanessa Foster and her husband hopped on a flight to Alaska without any plan. Because of his serious flaws, Jack was not allowed to go to school like a normal child. Fortunately, his family never gave up on him. Instead, they taught him to take care of himself, and even came up with an idea for Jack to earn a living—to sell daily necessities such as water, towels and tissues (纸巾) on the street. Jack readily accepted his family’s advice. However, his mother was not as calm as she appeared. She was indeed worried a lot. She was always thinking to herself, “What if someone laughs at him for his strange way of walking? What if someone mimics his mumbled speech?” So when Jack walked down the street with a basket full of tissues, his mother sneaked behind him. At first, everything seemed to be going well. Passers-by did not look at him in a different way just because of his “different” way of saying and walking. Soon after, Jack sold a few packets of tissues without a hitch and every time he made a sale, he would politely thanked the buyers, which earned him approving looks and smiles. However, something alarming, eventually, happened—several packets of tissues accidentally fell off because Jack was walking unsteadily. He bent down to pick them up, but because of his poor balance, more tissues fell out of the basket. What’s worse, Jack fell to the ground heavily. At that moment, his mom couldn’t bear it anymore and attempted to offer a hand to Jack. Just at that time, what worried her most happened when a group of children from school saw Jack and caught sight of his “awkward” and “different” way of movements. Paragraph 1 Just as she expected, those children rushed towards Jack. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2 The children didn’t leave but stayed nearby, whispering something. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第二节:读后续写(满分25分) 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 67. Dear Mark, _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours, Li Hua 试卷第1页,共3页 试卷第1页,共3页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2025年高考英语预热模拟卷 (江苏特供卷) 第一部分:听力(共两节,满分 30 分) 第一节 听下面 5 段对话。 1.What is the man’s attitude towards the changes? Earlier this week, we brought you the story of two masked men who robbed the downtown bank in Lafayette. They’ve been caught and are currently in prison. Today, there was a three-car accident that happened on Highway One. Two people were rushed to the hospital and fortunately appeared to be in stable condition. The crash was caused by a woman who was texting while driving. She was unable to see the car in front of her. Please don’t text when you are driving, folks! Girl Scout cookies go on sale this week. Girl Scouts are proud to announce that sugar-free cookies will be available. They’ve also introduced some new flavors. When we come back from our commercial break, the Richards family will speak about their dog Bodi, who saved their baby daughter last week. Everything was recorded on videotape. You won’t want to miss the interview. Plus, Bodi is also here in the studio! And after that, we’ll have the weather report and sports, so stay tuned. A 2024 Western Colorado Elementary Science Fair EUREKA! and D51 are partnering to host our annual elementary (小学的) science fair! 根据第二段“It was there that he came across a science textbook entitled Using Energy. He learned that he could generate electricity using wind. The youngster realized that, if mastered, this power could help his village in exceptional ways.(在那里,他看到了一本名为《使用能源》的科学教科书。他了解到他可以利用风发电。这个年轻人意识到,如果掌握了这种力量,他可以以不同寻常的方式帮助他的村庄)”可知,科学教科书《使用能源》激励威廉把电带到他的村庄。故选C。 25.细节理解题。根据第三段“He defended himself from all doubt and criticism.(他为自己辩护,不受任何怀疑和批评)”可知,起初并不是所有人都支持威廉的梦想。故选A。 26. 根据划线词上文“What seemed like a hopeless situation has been turned into an inspirational story that motivates each and every one of us, persuading us that no misfortune”以及后文“He sought solutions for his problems and continued fighting even when the going got tough.(他为自己的问题寻求解决方案,即使情况变得艰难,他也会继续战斗)”可知,一个看似绝望的情况已经变成了一个鼓舞人心的故事,说明没有什么不幸是一成不变的,故划线词意思是“不变的”。故选C。 27. 根据最后一段“What seemed like a hopeless situation has been turned into an inspirational story that motivates each and every one of us, persuading us that no misfortune is set in stone. A.Gene Therapy: A Hope for the Deaf B.Deaf Children: A Concern of Society C.Chen’s Research: A Breakthrough in Surgery D.Inherited Deafness: A Challenge for Treatment 【答案】28.D 29.A 30.B 31.A 【导语】本文为说明文。 根据第二段“Globally, 34 million children have deafness or hearing loss, and genes are responsible for up to 60% of cases. (全球有3400万儿童患有耳聋或听力损失,高达60%的病例是由基因引起的。) ”可知,第二段主要是对儿童耳聋情况的分析。故选D。 29.推理判断题。根据第四段“One shows a little girl 13 weeks after treatment repeating father, mother, grandmother, sister and “I love you.” They don’t know why the treatment didn’t work in one of them. But the five others, who previously had complete deafness, can now hear a regular conversation and talk with others. (其中一个视频显示,一个小女孩在治疗13周后重复着父亲、母亲、祖母、姐姐和“我爱你”。他们不知道为什么治疗对其中一人无效。但其他五个人以前完全失聪,现在可以听到定期的对话并与他人交谈。) ”及第五段“Prior results from other researches have been just as positive.(先前其他研究的结果也同样积极。)” 故选A。 30. 根据最后一段“Columbia University’s Dr. Lawrence Lustig said, “Although the children in these studies don’t wind up with perfect hearing, even a mild hearing loss recovery in these kids is pretty astonishing.” Still, he added, “Many questions remain, such as how long the therapies will last and whether hearing will continue to improve in the kids.”(哥伦比亚大学的Lawrence Lustig博士说:“尽管这些研究中的孩子们最终并没有获得完美的听力,但这些孩子即使是轻微的听力损失恢复也相当惊人。”不过,他补充道,“还有很多问题,比如治疗能持续多久,孩子们的听力是否会继续改善。”)” 可知,Lawrence Lustig对这个疗法的态度是客观的。故选B。 31.主旨大意题。根据全文和第四段“The therapy of Chen’s team delivers a functional copy of that gene to the inner ear during a surgery. It caused no major side effects. (陈的团队的治疗方法在手术中将该基因的功能拷贝传递到内耳。它没有造成重大副作用。)”可知,文章主要介绍了通过基因治疗患有由基因突变导致的遗传性耳聋的儿童。A项“基因治疗:聋人的希望”是最合适的标题。故选A。 D Is forgiveness against our human nature? 根据第二段中“Those who forgive are against their basic nature, much to their harm. In his opinion, forgivers are compromising their well-being as they offer mercy to others, who might then take advantage of them.(那些宽恕的人违背了他们的本性,对他们造成了很大的伤害。在他看来,宽恕者在向他人提供仁慈的同时,也在损害自己的幸福,而这些人可能会利用他们)”可知,Droll认为宽恕的人违背了他们的本性,对他们造成了很大的伤害,他认为宽恕者在向他人提供仁慈的同时,也在损害自己的幸福。故选D。 33.推理判断题。根据文章第三段中“Without love, our connections with a wide range of individuals in our lives can fall apart. Even common sense strongly suggests that the will to power over others does not make for harmonious interactions.(没有爱,我们与生活中各种各样的人的联系就会破裂。甚至常识也强烈表明,控制他人的意愿并不会促成和谐的互动。)”可知,没有爱,我们与他人的联系就会破裂,控制他人的意愿并不会促成和谐的互动;结合下文“For example, how well has slavery worked as a mode of social harmony?(例如,奴隶制作为社会和谐的一种模式发挥了多大的作用?)” 根据文章第三段“We are not necessarily born with the capacity to forgive, but instead with the potential to learn about it and to grow in our ability to forgive.(我们不一定天生就有宽恕的能力,但我们有潜力去学习宽恕,并在宽恕的能力中成长)”可知,作者对于宽恕持支持的态度。故选A。 35. 根据文章最后一段“As an important note, when we take a classical philosophical perspective, we see the distinction between potentiality and actuality. We are not necessarily born with the capacity to forgive, but instead with the potential to learn about it and to grow in our ability to forgive. The actuality of forgiving, in real situations, develops with practice.(值得注意的是,当我们从古典哲学的角度来看,我们看到了潜能和现实性之间的区别。 At first glance, it seems to be Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer’s masterpiece Girl with a Pearl Earring. 36.由上文“At first glance, it seems to be Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer’s masterpiece Girl with a Pearl Earring. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150 左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1 Just as she expected, those children rushed towards Jack. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2 The children didn’t leave but stayed nearby, whispering something. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragraph 1 Just as she expected, those children rushed towards Jack. She closed her eyes tightly, expecting the worst. However, to her surprise, the children did not mock or laugh at Jack. Instead, they quickly surrounded him, helping him to pick up the fallen tissues and put them back into the basket. One of the children even held Jack’s hand to help him stand up. “Are you okay, Jack?” asked a girl with concern. Jack nodded and smiled weakly, his eyes filled with gratitude. His mother, who had been hiding behind a nearby tree, saw this scene and felt relieved. She realized that the world was not as cruel as she had imagined, and Jack’s “different” was not a reason for others to mock or bully him. Paragraph 2 The children didn’t leave but stayed nearby, whispering something. Curious, Jack’s mother slowly approached and overheard their conversation. “He’s so brave, selling things on the street like that,” said one of the boys. “Yeah, and he’s so polite too. I feel bad for laughing at him before,” added another girl. Jack’s mother felt her heart swell with pride. She realized that Jack’s differences were not his weaknesses; they were his strengths. His resilience and courage in the face of adversity had inspired these children to see him in a new light. As she watched Jack continue to sell his tissues with the help of his newfound friends, she knew that he had found a place where he belonged, a place where he was accepted and loved for who he was. 词汇激活 行为类 ①围绕:surround/ encircle ②想象:imagine/picture ③意识到:realize/be aware of 情绪类 ①惊讶:surprise/amazement ②爱:love/adore 【点睛】[高分句型1] Instead, they quickly surrounded him, helping him to pick up the fallen tissues and put them back into the basket.
