The Double Ninth Festival is a special day for elderly people in China.
The festival is on the ninth day of the ninth month of the lunar calendar. As
the Chinese word for “nine” has the same sound as the word for “long”, people take the Double Ninth Festival to show their wishes for a long life for elderly people.

There are many traditions for this festival. On that day, families get
together and climb mountains for luck and in the hope that elderly people will
live much longer. They also drink chrysanthemum wine(菊花酒) and wear
a plant called zhuyu to celebrate it. Both the chrysanthemum and zhuyu are
regarded as clean plants that can clean houses and cure(治愈) diseases.

Respecting elderly people is shown not only on this special day but also
in daily life. For example, when an older person enters a room, everyone
stands up. When there are several guests at the table, the host usually
introduces them from the oldest to the youngest. When a younger person is
presenting something to an older person, two hands are used. On a crowded
subway or bus, younger people always offer their seats to elderly people.

Would you be surprised to find a New Year’s Day in March? Indonesians on the island of Bali are getting ready to ring in Nyepi, their New Year. It falls in March or April on the night of the new moon and it is a symbol of a fresh start for the people and the island of Bali. On the eve of Nyepi, family members and friends get together in the market. They carry a huge monster which is made of wood and other materials around the village three times. After that, people set it on fire, hoping to drive away evil(罪恶的) spirits.

A mooncake is in the shape of a full moon which is a symbol of reunion
during the Mid-Autumn Festival. When I was a little kid, all my family
members got together at my grandparents’ home at the Mid-Autumn Festival.
The mooncakes sold outside were expensive for us, so we made mooncakes
by hand. I still remember the old times—my grandma taught us to make
mooncakes. Everyone was busy but happy.

Now many kinds of mooncakes are sold in the supermarkets and they

to make mooncakes together. She often says she enjoys doing that, for it
provides a valuable chance of a family reunion.
We all know what a small mooncake brings us. It not only carries our
deep love for our family members, but also encourages us to do something
in person.
