Popular culture often shows alcohol as a big part of the college experience in the United States. Television programs and movies about American college life have images of wild parties with young people either drinking alcohol or holding a drink.
Now, a new study of alcohol use suggests that some college students may be missing meals so they can have more drinks or get drunk faster. Researchers are calling this kind of behavior "drunkorexia".
The study involved 1,184 college students between the ages of 18 and 26. Researchers found that 80 percent of those studied had demonstrated some kind of drunkorexia in the past three months. They had performed heavy physical exercise, eaten low calorie meals or even missed meals for up to a full day before drinking alcohol.
Dipali Rinker organized the study and presented its findings to the Research Society on Alcoholism in June. She says students see drunkorexia as a way to keep their body weight down while drinking alcohol. And it causes them to feel the effects of alcohol quickly and with more intensity(强度). Rinker says unhealthy eating habits are only one of the reasons why this type of behavior is dangerous. Heavy drinking is linked to drunk driving, unprotected sex, and alcohol poisoning.
George Koob, who directs a U.S. governmental agency that studies alcohol related problems, says that the percent of students using alcohol has not increased in recent years. But what worries him is that the number of students drinking to the point of "blacking out" has increased. Blacking out is when a person drinks so much alcohol they have no memory of their actions while drunk.
Koob notes that college students in Canada and Europe also face issues with alcohol. But he feels a big part of the problem is that Americans do not fully understand alcohol's effects. Most people do not know the part of the brain where decisions are made is not fully developed until age 25 and that alcohol harms the development of that part of the brain, he adds.
4. What is the purpose of the behavior "drunkorexia"?
A. To get drunk. B. To drink more alcohol.
C. To take exercise. D. To lose weight.
5. What can heavy drinking result in?
A. Unhealthy eating habits. B. Drunkorexia.
C. Alcohol poisoning. D. Quick response.
6. Which of the following is the result of “blacking out”?
A. Missing meals. B. Forgetting something one did.
C. Having unprotected sex. D. Operating a vehicle while drunk.

Scientists have discovered the world’s largest known field of sea grass. They did it using videos shot by some unusual helpers: tiger sharks. The work should help protect the sea grass and also shows off a powerful way to explore the ocean.
Sea grasses are flowering plants that normally grow in shallow waters near coasts. They grow in thick fields, known as meadows(草地). Sea grass meadows help clean the ocean’s water, and provide food and shelter for many sea creatures. Sea grasses store huge amounts of carbon—the harmful pollution that’s making global warming worse. Damaging these sea grass meadows can release this pollution again,so it’s important to protect them.
From above, the meadows can be hard to spot, either because the water is too deep or not clear enough. And the ocean is so huge that it’s simply not possible to study it all by diving. So a team of scientists decided to have sharks help with the research. Tiger sharks are huge, strong, and deadly. But they also live underwater, are fast swimmers, and spend a lot of time in sea grass meadows. Between 2016 and 2020, a team of researchers attached cameras and other trackers to the fins (鳍) of seven tiger sharks. After catching the sharks, the scientists worked quickly to attach the equipment, and then let them go again.
The scientists have learned that the waters around the Bahamas are home to the largest sea grass meadow ever discovered and that the world has roughly 40% more sea grass meadows than they previously thought.
The programme shows how useful large underwater animals can be in helping to learn more about life under the sea. Oliver Ship ley is a scientist at Beneath the Waves, which led the work. He says animals like tiger sharks “...are going to take us to new places that we didn’t know existed.”
8. What can be known about sea grasses in Paragraph 2?
A. They help fight global warming. B. They need to be removed regularly.
C. They mainly live on sea creatures. D. They grow in deep waters of the ocean.
9. Why are Tiger sharks chosen by scientists?
A. They are sensitive to sea grasses. B. Cameras are easily fixed on them.
C. They are the most faithful sea animals. D. They spend much time in sea grass meadows.
10. What does Oliver Ship ley think of sea animals?
A. They are dangerous. B. They are adorable.
C. They are helpful. D. They are smart.
11. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Many new places in the ocean need exploring.
B. Sharks help discover world’s largest sea grass meadow.
C. Scientists have found a powerful way to protect the ocean.
D. Large underwater animals contribute a lot to the ocean.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. C 11. B

【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Sea grasses store huge amounts of carbon—the harmful pollution that’s making global warming worse. Damaging these sea grass meadows can release this pollution again,so it’s important to protect them.(海草储存了大量的碳——这种有害污染正在加剧全球变暖。破坏这些海草草地会再次释放这种污染,所以保护它们很重要)”可知,海草能够帮助对抗全球变暖。故选A项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“But they also live underwater, are fast swimmers, and spend a lot of time in sea grass meadows.(但它们也生活在水下,游泳速度很快,在海草草地上度过了很多时间)”可知,科学家们选用虎鲨是因为他们生活在水下,游泳速度很快,并且会在海草草地上度过很长时间。故选D项。
10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Oliver Ship ley is a scientist at Beneath the Waves, which led the work. He says animals like tiger sharks “...are going to take us to new places that we didn’t know existed.”(Oliver Ship ley是“海浪之下”组织的科学家,该组织领导了这项研究。他说像虎鲨这样的动物“……将把我们带到我们不知道存在的新地方。”)”可推知,Oliver Ship ley 认为海洋动物是有帮助的。故选C项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Scientists have discovered the world’s largest known field of sea grass. They did it using videos shot by some unusual helpers: tiger sharks. The work should help protect the sea grass, and also shows off a powerful way to explore the ocean.(科学家们发现了世界上已知最大的海草地。他们用虎鲨拍摄的视频来做这件事。这项工作应该有助于保护海草,也展示了一种探索海洋的强大方式)”且通读整篇文章可知,文章讲述的虎鲨帮助科学家们发现了世界上已知的最大的海草场。故选B项。

If anyone knows what makes a great children's book,it must be Sussex author and illustrator(插图画家)Jane Hissey. Her "Old Bear" books have achieved classic status in a variety of formats.
I met Jane at her home in the East Sussex countryside and asked her what she thought the secret of a classic children's book was. "That's a difficult one, I suppose it has got to be related to children's stage of development-for young children, pictures on a page that are familiar; for older children, an experience. The book should be familiar, but hold some surprises too to keep the interest. It must inspire and delight them, but there are the things that happen every day."
After the birth of her first child, she gave up teaching and worked on her own artwork, drawing pictures of teddy bears. An editor from a publishing company saw her work and invited Jane to do a children's book. Over the years, from the first "Old Bear" book in 1986, her children have made a huge contribution-especially in terms of plots. She said, "I used to give my children the toys to play with-and they had tea parties and so on. One of my bear characters,' Little Bear', is the same age as Ralph, my youngest, who's seven now. All the children have joined in my work and, in years to come, they will realize how much."
"I hope I'll know when people are getting tired of the characters. If ever they did, I think I'd go on drawing them for fun," Jane continued. "My own children have been very useful to me in my work, but as they are older now, I' ll just have to hope that other people's children can inspire me."
12. What is Jane's opinion about a successful children's book?
A. It contains something unexpected.
B. It offers an escape from everyday life.
C. It's more attractive as children get older.
D. It's set in a place known to its readers.
13. Why did Jane take up writing books?
A. She got to know an editor.
B. She hoped to make classic children's books.
C. Her artwork attracted a professional.
D. She wrote stories for her own children.
14. How did Jane's children assist her in her work?
A. By helping her concentrate on her work.
B. By telling her their own stories.
C. By suggesting characters for her stories.
D. By giving her ideas for her stories.
15. What is Jane's attitude towards her future work?
A. Encouraged. B. Uncertain.
C. Tired. D. Disappointed.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. D 15. B
【解析】

Guilty Pleasures?
You might have heard of the expression “a guilty pleasure” — maybe it’s the chocolate bar you buy on the way home from work, or the new clothes that you don’t really need. It comes from the idea that when we treat ourselves, it can sometimes leave us feeling guilty. Perhaps we don’t feel we deserved it, or we don’t think it was a responsible way to spend our money. But should we feel like this? ___16___
Perhaps not. Psychologists have suggested that buying things for yourself can make you feel better as it provides an opportunity to take control of your situation. ___17___ It may be that as well as lifting your mood, when you buy a treat, you might just be looking after yourself.
Of course, there are also examples of people turning to destructive behaviour when faced with stressful circumstances. People might spend money that they don’t have at all or turn to some dangerous addictions. ___18___ Self-indulgence can be reckless and have negative consequences, while self-nurturing is taking responsible decisions to satisfy our needs and take care of ourselves in ways that don’t have a significant impact.
___19___ Many universities publish guides with advice for coping with exam stress. It’s essential to reflect the difference between self-indulgence and self-nurture. ___20___ They also suggest doing things that you enjoy much and are good at so that you can feel accomplishment and to avoid things that may make you feel worse afterwards.
So perhaps, as long as we make responsible decisions, we shouldn’t feel guilty about our guilty pleasures.
A. Do we need to have a guilty or clear conscience?
B. Do we really have to feel guilty about treating ourselves?
C. One stress that people may need to deal with is exam stress.
D. Psychologists recommend rewarding yourself for your efforts.
E. So we should keep a balance between self-indulgence and self-nurturing.
F. It can give you social contact and a confidence boost by changing your image.
G. Psychologist Leon Seltzer considers the difference between self-indulgence and self-nurturing.
【答案】16. B 17. F 18. G 19. C 20. D

Alex sat quietly at the back of his Chinese class, his eyes fixed on the textbook before him. As a shy and unnoticed student, he felt like a lone wolf, struggling against the complexities of high school life. Ms Lau, his Chinese teacher, was a light in his otherwise dark world. Her warm smile and gentle behavior made her stand out among the sea of teachers. She was the only one who seemed to understand his conservative nature, always encouraging him to step out of his comfort zone.
One day, after class, Ms Lau approached Alex with excitement shining in her eyes. “Alex, I have an offer for you,” she said, her voice filled with enthusiasm. “I am organizing a cultural exchange program to China, and I believe it would be a great opportunity for you to explore a new world.”
Alex’s heart skipped a beat, the prospect of traveling to a foreign country both exciting and terrifying. He hesitated, unsure if he had the courage to start such an adventure. But Ms Lau’s firm belief in him gave him the push he needed to take a leap of faith.
Under Ms Lau’s guidance, Alex began preparing for the trip. He got really interested in Chinese culture and learned about its long history and traditions. Ms Lau became his mentor(导师), teaching him not only the language but also invaluable life lessons. She taught him the importance of being confident and not giving up, reminding him that growth only happens outside one’s comfort zone.
The day of departure arrived, and Alex found himself on a plane headed for China. He couldn’t help but feel amazed as he stepped off the plane and into a world so different from his own. The busy streets, bright colors, and unfamiliar sounds flooded his senses. Yet, Ms Lau’s comforting presence by his side provided him with the strength to face the unknown.

7. By writing the passage, the writer aims to ________.
A. show heavy drinking and its harm B. show America college life
C. introduce American culture D. explain harmful behaviors

Scientists have discovered the world’s largest known field of sea grass. They did it using videos shot by some unusual helpers: tiger sharks. The work should help protect the sea grass, and also shows off a powerful way to explore the ocean.

C It's more attractive as children get older.
D. It's set in a place known to its readers.
13. Why did Jane take up writing books?
A. She got to know an editor.
B She hoped to make classic children's books.
