异国文化:埃及人屋顶养鸽
Walking around Cairo, the capital of Egypt, it’s hard to miss the small wooden houses that sit at the top of some buildings. Those are pigeon lofts.
Raising pigeons has been a long tradition in the Middle East, especially in Egypt. For many Egyptians, now it remains a hobby. At the same time, raising pigeons is also a way to make a living, because the bird has been a delicious dish on the local menu for thousands of years.
The cost of raising pigeons has risen recently, but Egyptian pigeon breeders are unlikely to give up their hobby or business.
Ahmed Kamal, a local man, turns the whole rooftop (屋顶) of his house into a large pigeon loft. The 48-year-old man says he has been a pigeon breeder for about 35 years. “I started this hobby when I was 12 or 13. I had the passion, but I didn’t have much experience at first. But over time, I learned a lot through practice and I gradually started a trade,” Kamal says. “The main passion of a pigeon breeder is to see his birds flying and returning to him again.” He also says he can tell the age of a pigeon from the growth of feathers on its wings.
Most pigeon breeders buy and sell their birds on a special street at Cairo’s famous weekly Friday Market, where several places display different kinds of pigeons.
