学习体验:视频艺术课
Last semester I took a beginner’s course in video art. The course taught me about the development of modern and contemporary (当代的) arts, and how media works.
Lauren Woods, the course professor, encouraged us to make and edit (剪辑) videos. I made a video about food. I believe food is a good way to learn more about cultural differences and social traditions, and trying food is a way for me to understand the world and make friends.
We also learned about performance art. Performance artists use their bodies and behaviors to inspire people’s thoughts about the world. Once, Professor Woods gave us paint, glue and colored paper, and let us do whatever we wanted to in an empty art room. At first, we just drew some flowers and animals on the walls; however, later, we poured paint on the walls and even broke the colored paper. This art experiment showed that when there are no rules, people can have strong destructive power (破坏力).
Our final project was shooting a performance art video. I shot a video of myself taking care of an egg. I needed to wash the egg and talk to it every 15 minutes. I discovered my social life, rest times and study times were interrupted (打断) by taking care of the egg. I wanted to use this video to show the difficulties of being a mother, and encourage society to think of motherhood as a real job.
In general, the video art class provided me with the chance to create and edit videos by myself. It allowed me to learn more about modern arts in Western society. It was the most interesting and creative course I took this past semester.

健康饮食:喝茶的好处
The world is full of tea drinkers. For many, they simply enjoy the taste. But new research suggests tea might help those who drink it live longer than those who do not.
Tea is known to contain helpful substances that can reduce inflammation (炎症). Past studies in China and Japan, where green tea is popular, have suggested several health benefits (好处). Now, scientists say black tea may show similar benefits.
Scientists from the United States National Cancer Institute carried out the study. They examined years of data gathered about the tea drinking behavior of almost 500,000 adults in Britain for as many as 14 years. Black tea is the most common kind of tea in Britain.
The study found that high tea intake (摄入) — two or more cups a day — was linked to a moderate benefit: a 9 to 13 percent lower risk of death from any cause than non-tea drinkers.
Tea contains different elements, including polyphenols (多酚). Experts at the U.S. National Institutes of Health say polyphenols are thought to be responsible for the health benefits that have traditionally been linked to tea, especially green tea.
Green tea is reported to improve mental ability, ease (缓解) digestive problems and head pain, and help people with weight loss. Green tea can also prevent people from getting heart disease and cancer.
