The Legendary Bermuda Triangle:A Mystery No More
For years, people have believed that an area of the Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda, Puerto Rico and Florida, the US was a dangerous place. They thought planes and boats passing through here were likely to disappear. By 1964, a writer had called the area the“Bermuda Triangle”.
In 1945, five US Navy planes, called Flight 19, took off from Florida and never came back. After they disappeared into the Bermuda Triangle, different ideas had begun to spread that the area was a dangerous place. Even before this famous flight, several ships had disappeared in these waters. People had many different ideas about why this happened.
However, scientists believe that weather is part of the problem. Unusually shaped clouds above the area create strong winds that go down into the water, creating huge tsunami waves that can take down boats or low-flying planes. And many researchers believe that there’s no mystery at all. Ships go down and plane accidents happen all over the world. It just seems to happen more in the Bermuda Triangle because there’s more traffic.
The Bermuda Triangle is also one of the deepest areas of the Atlantic, with some areas being 8 km deep. So, remains are hard to find, which makes the disappearances seem even more mysterious.
In 2011, the Flight 19 planes were found, showing that they didn’t completely disappear. But no matter how much evidence there is that the Bermuda Triangle is no more dangerous than any other part of the ocean, many still believe that you mustn’t go there.

The researchers made sure of an area called Okavango as where we came from. There used to be a big lake but it is now a salt marsh (盐碱地). People had water, hunting and farmland. Scientists studied DNA from 200 people who live near the area today. They are from the Khoisan people, who live in modern-day South Africa and Namibia. They had a lot of DNA called L0. Ⅵ. 阅读理解
Glaciers (冰川) are large bodies of ice and snow. Because they’re so icy, it’s very hard for things to live on them. But glacier mice do somehow.
Of course, glacier mice aren’t mice. They’re round balls of moss (苔藓) that can grow to about the size of a tennis ball. They’re usually found in groups near small rocks on the surface of icy glaciers.
Normal moss can’t form on a glacier, so scientists believe glacier mice probably form around something small, like a bit of dust. Because staying on the ice too long would kill the moss, glacier mice form into a ball. It allows them to move around, so that their different parts touch the ice at different times.
Some scientists once did an experiment on glacier mice. They put a small device inside 30 glacier mice to follow their movements. They learned that the glacier mice traveled about 2. 5 centimeters (厘米) a day. They seemed to move in groups. They moved in the same direction and at about the same speed, almost like a group of animals. The scientists tested several ideas that might explain how the mice moved together, such as rolling downhill, being blown by the wind, or following the sun. None of these could explain the movement of the glacier mice.
Glacier mice are still a mystery to scientists. For their next experiment, the scientists said they would use cameras to take pictures of the movements of the mice over a long period of time. Are you looking forward to getting the answer?
1. Glacier mice are a kind of ______.
A. animal B. plant C. rock D. glacier
2. Why can the glacier mice live on the ice?
A. Because they get heat by rolling downhill.
B. Because they live together to fight against the wind.
C. Because they get more light by following the sun in groups.
D. Because they can touch the ice with different parts at different times.
3. How far can the glacier mice move in a year?
A. About 10 meters.
B. About 2. 5 centimeters.
C. About half a kilometer.
D. More than 10 kilometers.
4. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Scientists know everything about the glacier mice.
B. We have known about how the glacier mice move.
C. There is still something unknown about the glacier mice.
D. Scientists have taken some photos to learn about the movements of the glacier mice.

Recently, the students often find that the classroom is very clean. Everyone is guessing who cleans it. Different students have different opinions about this matter.
Kate thinks it might be Eric who cleans up the classroom, because Eric is a warm-hearted boy who always likes to help others. However, Mark doesn’t agree with Kate. In his opinion, it could be John. John is a member of a volunteer club. He is interested in volunteering to do something for other people. John might do these things. Cathy has different ideas about it. She thinks it might be Julia. Julia always does homework in the classroom after school, so she has the chance to clean up the classroom alone.
In my opinion , whoever does this , we should thank him or her because of his or her act of kindness.

Cheetahs, the world’s fastest animals on land, died out in India over 70 years ago. 1. D
Long ago, Asian cheetahs used to roam (闲逛) across India. But by 1952, they were considered extinct (灭绝的). One of the main reasons was that much of their natural land was taken over by humans. 2. C
Since 1952, there have been efforts to help cheetahs return to India. Recently, that finally happened. Eight cheetahs were set free in Kuno National Park, India, which was set up in 1981 as a wildlife protection area.
The cheetahs were a gift from the government of another country. The cheetahs were chosen because they were used to being near humans. The cheetahs that were released(释放) aren’t Asian cheetahs, but African cheetahs. There may be as few as 12 Asian cheetahs still living in the wild, and they live in Iran.
3. E Now, there are only about 8, 000 left. Some scientists believe that getting cheetahs going in India again will help make sure that cheetahs don’t die out completely.
To make sure that they are all healthy, the eight cheetahs will spend some time in an enclosed area. 4. A They will be able to roam into nearby forests.
The goal of India’s Project Cheetah is to build up a population of about 40 cheetahs. A second group of 12 cheetahs is being prepared in South Africa.
A. Then they’ll be given more freedom.
B. India was preparing the park as a place for lions.

Some animals can be trained to help humans. For example, specially trained dogs help blind people walk around the town safely. Some kinds of monkeys can be taught things too. They can learn how to help people who can’t use their arms or legs. The monkeys pick up the phone when it rings, carry shopping bags and do housework.
In the natural world, animals and humans are not usually friends, but there are a few interesting examples where they can work together. In Africa, the honey-guide bird works with humans to find food. The bird likes to eat the grubs (幼虫)—a type of insect that lives inside a beehive (蜂巢, 蜂窝). It knows how to find beehives but it can’t open them and get the grubs. People like to eat honey, but they aren’t very good at finding beehives, so the bird and the people help each other. The bird flies to a beehive and people follow it. When the people open the beehive and take the honey, they give the grubs to the bird.
In Laguna in the south of Brazil (巴西), fishermen and dolphins (海豚) work as a team. The ocean isn’t very clean, so the fishermen can’t see the fish. However, dolphins can find them easily by using sounds. When the dolphins find a large group of fish, they make a noise to tell the fishermen. Then the dolphins push the fish to the beach. The fishermen wait in the water near the beach and catch a lot of fish in their nets. The fishermen’s nets make it easier for the dolphins to catch fish too. In Laguna, fishermen and dolphins have been working together for many years. The fishermen teach their children how to work with the dolphins. The dolphins must be happy to help because they teach their babies how to work with the humans!
