FOUR EXTREME EXPERIENCES!
Looking for something exciting to do? You might like to try one of these 4 extreme experiences.
Crocodile watching
Fancy getting up close to some of the most scary animals on earth? Crocosaurus Cove, in Darwin (Australia) has the “Cage of Death”. It’s a glass wall that’s lowered into a pool. This gives you a 360 degree view of a 5-metre long, 800-kilogram saltwater crocodile as it’s being fed. The cable (缆绳) once broke and the cage sank to the bottom, but they’ve fixed it since then and visitors are assured it won’t happen again.
Edge walking
How about walking along the edge of a building several hundred meters up in the air? If that sounds like fun, head off to the CN Tower in Toronto (Ontario, Canada). The Edge Walk consists of a 20—30 minute walk along a 1.5 meter wide platform that runs around the tower’s restaurant roof. During the 150m-long walk, you’re encouraged to lean forwards as you look over Toronto’s skyline, and backwards so you can see the people in the Sky Pod observation deck above.
Plastic ball rolling
Fancy rolling down a hill in a ball of plastic? Zorbing (太空球) is popular all over the world, but the place to give it a go is in Rotorua (New Zealand)—home of the first zorbing site! A typical ball is about 3 meters in diameter, with an inner ball size of about 2 meters, leaving a 50—60 centimeter air cushion (气垫). There’s no brake or driving device, but the inner plastic helps cut down the shock.
Volcano bungee jump
If you’re looking for the adventure of a lifetime, how about a bungee jump off a helicopter into the crater (火山口) of a live volcano? You can try it yourself for a only $12,500. As a part of the jump, a helicopter ride takes you to the Villarrica volcano, one of the most active in Chile. Once you’re at the drop zone, you leap off the helicopter and fall into the volcano. Finally, you enjoy the ride back to the airport flying 130 kph and hanging from a rope 100 meters below the helicopter.
What fun!

Cimabue, the greatest painter of a Middle Ages in Italy, was surprised one day after his lunch break to discover that a fly had seated itself under the nose of a character that he had been working on. He swatted (重拍) at the fly, but it did not move. He reached out to touch the insect, only to find it was only wet paint. Turning around, he saw that his apprentice (学徒), Giotto, was laughing. Giotto had painted the fly when Cimabue was away, and it looked so real that Cimabue had been completely fooled.
Giotto di Bondone was born into a poor family in a village. Legend has it that one day, when Cimabue was wandering around the countryside, he spotted a young shepherd boy drawing pictures of his sheep, which were so vivid that Cimabue immediately asked him to come to Florence and learn how to paint. That was how Giotto’s story began in Florence, where the young student flourished under Cimabue’s instruction and soon surpassed his master in skill.
At that time, people in paintings didn’t look real, and the symbolism of art was difficult for viewers to connect with it. Innovation (创新) was not stressed, so art had remained the same for hundreds of years.
However, Giotto thought art should be something more connected with people in a more realistic way. His masterpieces included the forty major frescoes (壁画) for the Arena Chapel. Adopting many techniques that were uncommon then, he painted people the way he saw them, instead of the overly tall and boxy people that other artists painted. He created three-dimensional space by using perspective, something that had not been done since Roman times.
In addition to painting, Giotto wrote poetry and drew architectural plans. When Giotto was in his sixties, he painted the Ognissanti Madonna, another famous work of art. He continued working until the age of seventy. The ideas Giotto brought to painting throughout his life revolutionized the art world and made him one of the greatest painters ever.
4. What does the anecdote in paragraph 1 tell us about Giotto?
A. His humor. B. His talent. C. His courage. D. His determination.
5. How did Cimabue feel about Giotto’s painting when they first met?
A. Impressed. B. Hesitant. C. Doubtful. D. Amused.
6. What made Giotto’s works distinguished at that time?
A. Vivid colors. B. Classic skills.
C. Original composition. D. Lifelike quality.
7. Which of the following best summarizes Giotto’s story?
A. Great minds think alike.
B. Innovation is the vitality of art.
C. Constant dripping wears away a stone.
D A slow sparrow should make an early start.

Breakfast may just be the most important meal of the day, but finding time to search for something to eat in the morning can be a real challenge. In fact, you may skip the trouble altogether, especially if you’re trying to limit your daily calorie intake. However, the result may be worrying, in more ways than one.
Claire Anspach, RD, explained that eating a balanced breakfast not only starts your metabolism (新陈代谢), but also provides calories your body needs in order to be focused and productive. So, how many calories should you be eating each morning? It depends on a number of factors (因素), including your age and activity level. As for breakfast, “it’s hard to say exactly how much one person should eat, but on average, a well-balanced meal should be around 400 to 500 calories,” Anspach said, adding that breakfast is typically one of the biggest meals of the day.
Aminta Bullard, a registered dietitian and weight-loss coach, said something similar like that “calories are not one size fits all”. Bullard noted that people who exercise in the morning may need to add 300 calories to their pre- or post-workout breakfast to help fuel the body. The same can be said for professional athletes, as well as those who have jobs that require a lot of walking, standing, or other forms of movement.
Whatever your calorie requirements, Bullard recommends choosing a breakfast that contains protein (蛋白质) and fiber. “High protein and high fiber keep you energized and satisfied,” Bullard said. That’s opposed to foods that are high in sugar, like donuts, which she said can leave you “feeling sluggish” and cause you to reach for a snack. So, if you find that you’re always desiring a second breakfast, you might want to reevaluate what you’re eating for the first.
8. What’s the author’s attitude to skipping breakfast?
A. Supportive. B. Opposed. C. Casual. D. Unclear.
9. Which of the following may Anspach and Bullard both agree with?
A. One should eat as many calories as possible.
B. Age is the decisive factor for the intake of calories.
C. Different people have different demands for calories.
D. The more active one is, the more food should be eaten.
10. How are paragraphs 2 and 3 developed?
A. By listing data. B. By making comparisons.
C. By analyzing cause and effect. D. By offering experts’ opinions.
11. What does the underlined word “sluggish” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Unenergetic. B. Comfortable. C. Unhappy. D. Sick.
D
Animal appear to predict earthquakes by sensing electricity in the air — the first study to find reliable evidence of the phenomenon has shown.
Cameras revealed an “amazing” drop in the number of animals up to 23 days before a major quake hit their rainforest home at Yanachaga National Park in Peru. Lead scientist Dr Rachel Grant, from Anglia Ruskin University, said, “The results showed that just before the earthquake, animals’ activity dropped right down.”
On a normal day the cameras placed around Yanachaga National Park record between 5 and 15 animals. But in the 23 days before the earthquake, the number of animals dropped to five or fewer per day. No animals were photographed at all on five of the seven days immediately before the quake.
Another study showed that animal activity remained normal in the park over a different period when seismic (地震的) activity was low. Co-author, professor Friedemann Freund, said, “The cameras were located at an altitude of 900 meters. If air ionization occurred, the animals would escape to the valley below, where there were fewer positive ions ( 离子). With their ability to sense their environment, animals can help us understand small changes that occur before major earthquakes.”
Other evidence suggested that before the earthquake, the air around the high mountain sites filled with positive ions that can be produced when rocks are placed under stress. Positive ions have been known to cause ill effects in humans as well as animals. Scientists believe the animals were made to feel uncomfortable by the positive ions, leading them to avoid the area. They are thought to have escaped to lower ground, where the air was less ionized. The findings may help experts develop better short-term seismic forecasts.
12. How did scientists conduct the study?
A. By comparing different animals’ habits.
B. By observing animals in high mountains.
C. By explaining the positive ion phenomenon.
D. By analyzing images of animals they obtained.
13. What can be inferred from animal activity before earthquakes?
A. The ground at a lower altitude is less ionized.
B. Cameras normally record more animals per day.
C. Earthquake warnings can be detected in lower places.
D The activity of animals and earthquakes is consistent.
14. What can we learn from the text?
A. The findings make for accurate seismic forecast.
B. Animals tend to be uneasy with more positive ions.
C. Positive ions make humans and animals depressed.
D. All the animals remain abnormal before the earthquake.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Negative Influence of Positive Ions.
B Ions’ Destruction to the Environment.
C. Animals’ Behavior Before Earthquakes.
D. Creatures’ Ability to Predict Earthquakes.

Seeing the Good in Others
Many interactions these days have a kind of bumper-car (碰碰车) quality to them. At work, at home, on the telephone, or via email, we bounce off each other while we exchange information, smile or frown, and move on. ___16___ In fact, we’re most likely to notice the bad qualities in others rather than the good ones.
Unfortunately, if you feel surrounded by lots of bad qualities in others, you naturally feel less supported, less safe, and less likely to be generous or pursue your dreams. Plus, it functions oppositely. ___17___ But actually, seeing the good in others is a simple way to feel happier and more confident. Below are some useful suggestions for you.
Slow down. Step out of the bumper car and spend a few moments being curious about the good qualities in the other person. ___18___ Instead, you are opening your eyes, taking off the glasses of the negativity bias, and seeing what the facts really are.
See positive intentions. Recently I was at the dentist’s, and her assistant told me a long story about her electric company. My mouth was full of cotton wads, and I didn’t feel interested. But then I started noticing her underlying aims: to put me at ease, fill the time until she could pull the cotton out, and connect with each other as people.
___19___ Going through school, I routinely picked last for teams in PE. Then, in my first year at UCLA, I gave intramural touch football a try. We had a great quarterback (四分卫) who was too small for college football. After one practice, he told me in passing, “You’re good, and I’m going to throw to you.” I was surprised. But this was the beginning of my realization that I was actually quite a good athlete. His recognition also made me play better, which helped our team.
See positive character traits. Unless you’re surrounded by deadbeats and sociopaths, everyone you know must have many virtues, such as determination, generosity, kindness, patience, energy, grit, honesty, fairness, or compassion. Take a moment to observe virtues in others. ___20___
A. See abilities.
B. Cooperate with others.
C You are not looking through smog-colored glasses.
D. You, too, have positive intentions, real abilities, and virtues of mind and heart.
E. How often do we actually take the extra few seconds to see others’ good qualities?
F. You could also make a list of virtues in key people in your life — even in people who are challenging for you.
G. When another person feels that you don’t really see much that’s good in him or her, that person is less likely to take the time to see much that’s good in you.

Most people think that procrastination (拖延症) is a negative habit. But people like me, who routinely put off doing assignments, are likely to defend our “slower” approach to getting tasks done.
I’m the only procrastinator in my family. My parents and sister were all born with the “do it right now” gift. They are always in a rush, as if closely rushed by an invisible deadline. Personally, I prefer a more relaxed pace. When my parents voiced their concern about my tendencies, saying “Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today,” “No way!” I responded, confidently believing my method of getting things done was just as good as my sister’s…or so I thought.
At school we’d been talking about architecture and design. As part of the final assessment, my teacher Mr. Smith announced an exciting project that each student would have a month to complete. We were expected to choose our materials, construct a small building and make use of things we had learned in class. Not only would the winners receive extra credit, but the winning constructions would be proudly displayed in the cafeteria. “I have no clue how I could get it done,” my friend Nate sighed in despair. I didn’t say anything. Not because I shared his anxiety-but because I was not nervous at all. I loved hands-on projects! Picturing my brilliant work exhibited in the cafeteria, I was fully convinced that I would definitely produce something that could impress everyone. So relaxed was I that I didn’t give it a second thought for weeks.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Before I knew it, I had only one day left for the project.

D. The activity of animals and earthquakes is consistent.
14. What can we learn from the text?
A. The findings make for accurate seismic forecast.
B Animals tend to be uneasy with more positive ions.
C. Positive ions make humans and animals depressed.
D. All the animals remain abnormal before the earthquake.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Negative Influence of Positive Ions.
B. Ions’ Destruction to the Environment.
C. Animals’ Behavior Before Earthquakes.
D. Creatures’ Ability to Predict Earthquakes.
D 13. A 14. B 15. C

文章第三段讲到“On a normal day the cameras placed around Yanachaga National Park record between 5 and 15 animals. But in the 23 days before the earthquake, the number of animals dropped to five or fewer per day. No animals were photographed at all on five of the seven days immediately before the quake. (在平常的一天,放置在Yanachaga国家公园周围的摄像机记录了5到15只动物。但在地震前的23天,动物的数量下降到每天5只或更少。在地震前的七天中,有五天根本没有拍摄到任何动物)”可知,在地震前后摄像机捕捉到的动物的图像的数量是有所变化的。由此可知,科学家通过分析他们获得的动物图像进行这项研究的。故选D。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。文章最后一段讲到“Scientists believe the animals were made to feel uncomfortable by the positive ions, leading them to avoid the area. They are thought to have escaped to lower ground, where the air was less ionized. (科学家认为,这些动物被正离子弄得感觉不舒服,导致它们避开该区域。他们被认为逃到了较低的地面,那里的空气电离程度较低。)”可知,从地震前的动物活动中可以推断出海拔较低的地面电离程度较低。故选A。
文章最后一段讲到“Scientists believe the animals were made to feel uncomfortable by the positive ions, leading them to avoid the area. (科学家认为,这些动物被正离子弄得感觉不舒服,导致它们避开该区域。)”可知,我们能从文章中了解到动物往往对较多的正离子感到不安。故选B。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。主要介绍了一项有可靠证据的研究,动物似乎通过感应空气中的电流来预测地震。科学家通过摄像机记录下地震前后捕捉到的动物行为的变化证明了这一项研究的可靠性。文章第一段讲到“Animal appear to predict earthquakes by sensing electricity in the air — the first study to find reliable evidence of the phenomenon has shown.(动物似乎可以通过感知空气中的电力来预测地震—这是第一项发现这种现象可靠证据的研究。)”
Recently, I was at the dentist’s, and her assistant told me a long story about her electric company.
C. You are not looking through smog-colored glasses.
E 17. G 18. C 19. A 20. F
分析可知,前文“At work, at home, on the telephone, or via email, we bounce off each other while we exchange information, smile or frown, and move on.(在工作中,在家里,在电话中,或通过电子邮件,我们在交换信息时,微笑或皱眉,然后继续前进。)” 后文“In fact, we’re most likely to notice the bad qualities in others rather than the good ones.(事实上,我们最容易注意到别人的坏品质,而不是好品质。)” E“How often do we actually take the extra few seconds to see others’ good qualities?(我们有多少次会多花几秒钟去了解别人的优秀品质?)”
G“When another person feels that you don’t really see much that’s good in him or her, that person is less likely to take the time to see much that’s good in you.(当另一个人觉得你没有真正看到他或她的优点时,那个人就不太可能花时间去看到你的优点。)”
前文“Step out of the bumper car and spend a few moments being curious about the good qualities in the other person.(走出碰碰车,花点时间好奇对方身上的优点。)” C“You are not looking through smog-colored glasses.(你不是带着有色眼镜看世界。)”
根据该段末尾的总结“After one practice, he told me in passing, ‘You’re good, and I’m going to throw to you.’ I was surprised. But this was the beginning of my realization that I was actually quite a good athlete. His recognition also made me play better, which helped our team.(一次练习后,他顺便对我说:“你很棒,我要把球扔给你。”我很惊讶。但这是我开始意识到我其实是一个很好的运动员。他的认可也让我打得更好,这对我们的球队有帮助。)”可知,在本段作者以自己亲身经历为例,强调“看到他人能力”的意义。选项A“See abilities.(看到能力。)” 故选A项。
前文“Take a moment to observe virtues in others.(花点时间观察别人的优点。)” F“You could also make a list of virtues in key people in your life—even in people who are challenging for you.(你也可以列出你生活中关键人物的优点,甚至是那些对你有挑战性的人。)”

Before I realized, there was only one day left for the project. All that time I spent taking it easy suddenly seemed like a problem. I started to feel scared as I understood how much I had delayed things. While I was imagining my amazing creation without a care, time was running out without me noticing. Now, with only twenty-four hours left, I had to finish something that should have taken me a whole month. While my classmates were adding final details to their carefully planned and made projects, I was rushing to find materials and quickly put together something that looked like a building, which was obviously much worse than my classmates’ works.
That taught me a great lesson. Putting things off might feel good for a little while, but it causes problems later on. When I tried to fix my project at the last minute, I understood how important it is to start things early and keep going steadily. Waiting until the end didn’t just make my work worse, it also stopped me from enjoying the process and feeling proud of what I’d done. I learned that being productive means planning ahead and staying focused, instead of waiting until the last moment and feeling stressed.
