When the need for information technology service arises, it can be a stressful moment—the user is locked out of their computer, or a program isn’t working properly. But if you ask anyone in the MIT departments of Chemistry and Physics, or the News Office—the Institute divisions that are fortunate enough to have Greg Walton as their IT service provider, they’ll acknowledge that not only is Walton the best, but whatever the issue is, he will see it through until all involved are satisfied with the outcome. Walton usually arrives on the scene with endless positive energy that transforms a technical annoyance into an enjoyable interaction, regardless of how many other IT fires he has already put out that day.
The qualities that make him a star employee extend far beyond the campus. After spending his early years in foster care, Walton lived with his great-grandmother, but mostly, he was left to support himself. While many children might, understandably, lie flat under such unsupervised circumstances, Walton excelled academically and athletically at high school. He became the first person in his family to graduate from high school, and enrolled in college.
Walton seized the chance to enroll in Year Up, a program aiming to close the “opportunity divide” by providing young adults with the skills, experience, and support that will empower them to reach their potential through professional careers and higher education. Walton remains an active ambassador for the organization.
In June of 2007,armed with shining recommendations, Walton was hired as a temp (临时工) at MIT.He eventually worked his way up to where he is today—an invaluable asset (不可或缺的人) to three departments.“I do feel lucky to work at MIT,” he says.“I’ve had the ability to tour the country sharing my story in hopes that some people may be inspired and employers may see young adults with tough backgrounds differently.”
In addition to Year Up, he is involved with a number of organizations committed to helping young adults overcome their troubled pasts. This desire to have a positive impact on people’s lives extends seamlessly into his work at MIT. “Giving back is very important to me,” Walton says. “So many people have invested their time and energy into helping me, so I feel it would be an injustice not to do so.”
4. Staff members in MIT sing high praise for Walton mainly because________.
A. he enjoys interacting with his clients
B. he knows how to put out fires for others
C. he solves problems with a positive attitude
D. he is good at developing computer programs
5. What do we know about Walton before he went to college?
A. He depended on his great-grandma for a living.
B. He stood out in study and sports in high school.
C. He lay flat just like other unsupervised children.
D. He was supported by foster care for better education.
6. Why did Walton get involved with a lot of organizations?
A. To share his troubled past with young adults.
B. To pay back to society by helping young adults.
C. To advise businesses to treat young adults fairly.
D. To promote education equality among young adults.
7. What can we conclude from Walton’s story?
A. One good turn deserves another.
B. Opportunities favor the prepared mind.
C. Education is a powerful weapon to change the world.
D. One’s future is defined by his efforts not by his origin.

C
Part of the reason American shoppers are so attracted to wholesale shopping is their belief that it not only prevents waste but can save time and money, providing more value for the dollar. However, recent research suggests that the opposite may be true.
Victoria Ligon, an expert on consumer sciences, studied food purchasing habits of consumers and found that people tended to buy too much food and waste more of it than they realized. “The problem is that people are not shopping frequently enough,” Ligon said, “People are very price sensitive at the grocery store, but tend to fail to notice the cost of unused and wasted food at home.”
A common practice is to visit different stores for different items on a grocery list, “But people tend to overbuy at each of the places,” Ligon said. “People are not planning for the next day, but planning for the next week or two.”
“In theory, planning a week or more in advance sounds ideal. But given the reality of many people’s lives, this is challenging to do well,” Ligon said. “All of our food promotions are designed to get people to buy more. We believe it’s cheaper if we buy more now, but we rarely take into account how much we throw out in the end.”
Ligon noted shifts in the grocery industry that appear promising to help customers reduce food waste. Examples include cost-effective delivery services such as Amazon Fresh and Google Express, which allow consumers to purchase food items when they want to consume them, also reducing their need to frequent so many different stores. However, the study resulted in another troubling finding: The majority of people involved in the study had no idea that they were buying too much and wasting so much.
“When you read advice about reducing waste, it usually centers on what people do after the food is purchased,” Ligon said. “But more importantly, shop on a more frequent basis, so that you are only buying what you are going to consume in the short term.”
8. What do people often ignore when buying food in large quantities?
A. How good the food is. B. How much will be wasted.
C. How much the food costs. D. How often they should shop.
9. What is the author’s attitude towards meal planning for the next two weeks?
A. It is worth trying. B. It is not practical.
C. It takes great effort. D. It is not good for health.
10. What is the advantage of Amazon Fresh and Google Express?
A. Food prices are lowered. B. Food waste is prevented.
C. Food consumption is reduced. D. Food purchasing can be done at home.
11. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Shop More, Buy Less B. Shop Wisely, Eat Wisely
C. Consume More, Waste Less D. The More You Shop, the More You Waste
【答案】8. B 9. B 10. D 11. A

根据第二段第一句“Victoria Ligon, an expert on consumer sciences, studied food purchasing habits of consumers and found that people tended to buy too much food and waste more of it than they realized.(消费者科学专家维多利亚·利根研究了消费者的食品购买习惯,发现人们往往会购买过多的食品,浪费的食物比他们意识到的要多。)”可知,人们在大量购买食物时经常忽略多少会被浪费。故选B。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段第一句““In theory, planning a week or more in advance sounds ideal. But given the reality of many people’s lives, this is challenging to do well,” Ligon said.(“从理论上讲,提前一周或更长时间计划听起来很理想。但考虑到许多人的现实生活,做好这一点是具有挑战性的。”利冈说。)”可知,作者认为提前做未来两周的膳食计划并不实际。故选B。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段第二句“Examples include cost-effective delivery services such as Amazon Fresh and Google Express, which allow consumers to purchase food items when they want to consume them, also reducing their need to frequent so many different stores.(例如,亚马逊生鲜和谷歌快递等具有成本效益的配送服务允许消费者在他们想要消费的时候购买食品,也减少了他们频繁光顾许多不同商店的需要。)”和第一句“Ligon noted shifts in the grocery industry that appear promising to help customers reduce food waste.(利冈指出,食品杂货行业的转变似乎有望帮助消费者减少食物浪费。)”可知,亚马逊生鲜和谷歌快递的优势是食品购买可以在家里完成。故选D。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“Victoria Ligon, an expert on consumer sciences, studied food purchasing habits of consumers and found that people tended to buy too much food and waste more of it than they realized. “The problem is that people are not shopping frequently enough,” Ligon said, “People are very price sensitive at the grocery store, but tend to fail to notice the cost of unused and wasted food at home.”(消费者科学专家维多利亚·利根研究了消费者的食品购买习惯,发现人们往往会购买过多的食品,浪费的食物比他们意识到的要多。“问题在于人们购物的频率不够高,”利冈说,“人们在杂货店对价格非常敏感,但往往不会注意到家里未使用和浪费食物的成本。”)”和最后一段““When you read advice about reducing waste, it usually centers on what people do after the food is purchased,” Ligon said. “But more importantly, shop on a more frequent basis, so that you are only buying what you are going to consume in the short term.”(利根说:“当你读到关于减少浪费的建议时,它通常集中在人们购买食物后的行为上。但更重要的是,更频繁地购物,这样你就只买你短期内要消费的东西。”)”可知,文章主要是讲为了减少食物浪费,人们应该提高购物频率。所以,A项“Shop More, Buy Less”作为本文的题目,与文章主题相符合。故选A。
D
A new study shows that female academics are significantly underrepresented in winning academic prizes and having awards named after them. Analysis of nearly 9,000 awardees and 346 scientific prizes and medals published in Nature Human Behaviour has found that men win eight prizes for every one won by a woman if the award is named after a man. These awards represent almost two-thirds of all scientific prizes. Female academics are, however, more likely to win awards that have been named after other notable female scientists, with 47% of those awards going to women and 53% to men.
Dr Katja Gehmlich, Associate Professor in the Institute of Cardiovascular Science at the University of Birmingham and joint lead author of the study, said, “The gender gap between awardees in scientific prizes is sadly a product of a long, systematic issue of poor representation of women in sciences. Despite decades of efforts to rebalance this issue, our study shows that women are still poorly recognized for their scientific contributions, and men are far more likely to win prizes and awards, in particular, if those awards are named after other men.
“It seems particularly shocking to me that awards named after women still see more than half of prizes going to men. We further propose a list of actions to address and overcome these issues but are aware this will be a long process. The Nominate Her movement is one way that the scientific community can begin to address this,” said Dr Gehmlich.
Prof Stefan Krause from the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Birmingham and joint lead author of the study said, “Our data is indicative of much wider issues of gender inequality within sciences. Our current publication is an initial attempt to understand the causes of such striking gender inequality and to promote discussion on the subject within our scientific communities.”
“Research culture has a lot to do to improve the gender prize gap, as well as efforts to address the inequality that sees almost two-thirds of prizes currently named after men. More pathways may also be needed, such as renaming or getting rid of gender names associated with some awards,” added Prof Krause.
12. How are awards named after female scientists distributed between genders?
A. Males are in the majority.
B. Females take up a bit more than half.
C. They are almost entirely awarded to females.
D. They are evenly distributed between males and females.
13. What’s Dr Gehmlich’s attitude toward gender inequality in scientific prizes?
A. Doubtful. B. Tolerant.
C. Uncaring. D. Disappointed.
14. What suggestion does Prof Krause offer to narrow the gender gap?
A. Establishing gender rates for awards.
B. Increasing the number of female judges.
C. Encouraging more women to enter scientific fields.
D. Renaming or removing gender names from awards.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Achievements of women in science
B. The role of men in the scientific world
C Gender inequality in scientific awards
D. Future of gender equality in academia
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. D 15. C
【解析】

【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第二段“Dr Katja Gehmlich, Associate Professor in the Institute of Cardiovascular Science at the University of Birmingham and joint lead author of the study, said, “The gender gap between awardees in scientific prizes is sadly a product of a long, systematic issue of poor representation of women in sciences. Despite decades of efforts to rebalance this issue, our study shows that women are still poorly recognized for their scientific contributions, and men are far more likely to win prizes and awards, in particular, if those awards are named after other men.( 伯明翰大学心血管科学研究所副教授、该研究的联合主要作者Katja Gehmlich博士说:“令人遗憾的是,科学奖项获奖者之间的性别差距是女性在科学领域代表性不足这一长期系统性问题的产物。尽管几十年来一直在努力重新平衡这一问题,但我们的研究表明,女性在科学上的贡献仍然得不到认可,而男性获奖的可能性要大得多,特别是如果这些奖项是以其他男性的名字命名的。)”可知,学术奖项中的性别不平等是一个长期存在的系统性问题,由此可推知,她对该现象感到失望。故选D。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段““Research culture has a lot to do to improve the gender prize gap, as well as efforts to address the inequality that sees almost two-thirds of prizes currently named after men. More pathways may also be needed, such as renaming or getting rid of gender names associated with some awards,” added Prof Krause.(“研究文化在改善性别奖项差距方面还有很多工作要做,同时也要努力解决目前近三分之二的奖项以男性命名的不平等问题。可能还需要更多的途径,比如重命名或取消与某些奖项相关的性别名称,”克劳斯教授补充道。)”可知,克劳斯教授对缩小性别差距提出的建议是从奖项中重命名或删除性别名称。故选D。
【15题详解】

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I first moved to the south of America in the summer holiday before middle school, I realized that I was stepping into a completely different world. New Orleans, Louisiana, was unlike any place I had ever been to. In the French Quarter, tourists walked around all year with long skinny cups in their hands, and there was a popular game going on the streets which were crowded with cars but had few people. What surprised me more than anything, though, was the constant friendliness and compassion of the people of New Orleans.
“What can I get for you, sugar?” a waitress about my age asked me on my first day in New Orleans.
I was taken aback. The waitress did not even know me, but she treated me like family. She smiled down at me as I pointed to an item on the menu.
“Is the pasta good?” I asked her.
“It’s not my favorite,” she admitted with a smile. “But I’m more of a girl who prefers rice!” She shrugged, letting out a loud laughter.
I looked at her in shock. What was I supposed to say to that? I couldn’t believe that the waitress had just prevented me from ordering something. Actually, she had given me her honest opinion, as if we were best friends. She even told me her name—Mary. She even told me that she just worked as a part-time waitress and that she would be a high school student soon.
After a few days in New Orleans, I got used to kind reminders and polite greetings. I also realized how comforting it was to be treated like I belong wherever I went.
As soon as I settled into my new high school, I adapted myself to the school life. I was drawn to the lively music scene that New Orleans was famous for. I was a trumpet (小号) player, and I wanted to join the school music club. However, I was afraid that I was too poor in music to be qualified for the school music club.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
One afternoon, I was surprised to see a group of students including Mary practicing jazz in the school playground. The vibrant notes of trumpets, saxophones, and drums intermingled under the warm sun, creating a harmonious symphony that echoed throughout the campus. Mary, her fingers dancing across the valves of her trumpet, noticed me watching from afar and beckoned me over with an inviting smile. “You play, don't you? Come join us!” she shouted above the music, her eyes sparkling with genuine enthusiasm. My heart raced; this was the chance I had secretly hoped for, yet my insecurities held me back.
Finally, with Mary’s encouragement, my hesitation slowly melted away. I gathered my courage and approached the ensemble, trumpet in hand. The group warmly welcomed me, their acceptance dispelling my fears. Under Mary’s patient guidance, I began to find my rhythm within the ensemble. Our practices became a haven where mistakes transformed into learning opportunities, and every note played strengthened my confidence. Through this experience, I learned that sometimes, it takes a little push from a friend to realize one’s potential and truly belong.

D he is good at developing computer programs

B. He stood out in study and sports in high school.
C. He lay flat just like other unsupervised children.
D. He was supported by foster care for better education.

D. One’s future is defined by his efforts, not by his origin.
A common practice is to visit different stores for different items on a grocery list “But people tend to overbuy at each of the places,” Ligon said.
10 What is the advantage of Amazon Fresh and Google Express?
B. The role of men in the scientific world
C. Gender inequality in scientific awards
D. Future of gender equality in academia

1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
