classmates in the Confucius Institute, and telling my dad and mom at home
what I have learned, and all the stories I heard about China during
class,” Carter said. “Many people around me received selfless assistance

When my brother and I were children, we spent a few weeks each
summer in the countryside with our uncle. He was a geologist and going a
long way to find stones to be studied at the university was his main work.
More often, we followed him.

backpacks. “You can help me carry the samples(样本),” he explained.

bags, but thought he had just found better samples.
We reached the house in the late afternoon. The backpacks were so
heavy that we were really tired out when we put them on the ground. Yet our
uncle’s backpack was half-empty.

Scientists at the University of East London and the University of

having enough water in our bodies may also cut down on nervousness(紧张
不安). This kind of feeling would be bad for exam performances,” said
Chris Pawson, PhD of the University of East London.
“Whatever the explanation(解释) is, it is clear that students
should try hard to stay hydrated(含水的) during exams,” he added.
So next time, when you are going to have a big exam, try bringing a
bottle of water with you. Who knows—it may help you pass the exam.

Chen first read Mo Yan’s novel Red Sorghum in the early 1990s. “I
read Ge Haowen’s English translation in a bookstore.I found it interesting so
later I bought the Chinese version(版本) and tried to translate it. It took
me a long time because it was not my professional job. I had to translate it
only in my free time,” Chen says.
Though Mo Yan wrote the first draft(初稿) of Life and Death Are
Wearing Me Out in only 43 days, Chen spent six years translating it.
Chen says her work has opened up a window to the world. She says,
“Learning Chinese has let me love more and more about China and
Chinese culture.”

Firstly, I find that my spoken English has greatly improved
through reading. It gives me confidence when I talk in English.
Secondly, reading helps make writing easier for me. When I do English
reading, it reminds me how words are spelled correctly. So I make
fewer and fewer mistakes in my English writing. Thirdly, reading
develops my thinking ability. What I’ve read makes me open-minded and
enables me to think more. What’s more, reading helps me develop a
good habit of learning English.
