Ⅱ.阅读理解
A
挺直脊梁,勇往直前!
Teenagers always seem to feel insecure (不自信的) about the physical changes that they are experiencing. So do I. When I was in middle school, I grew more and more uncomfortable with my height. As the tallest girl in my class, I always felt different from others. Whenever I tried to bend (弯曲) my body to appear shorter, my grandfather would say, “Stand straight, stand tall!”
Until age 16, I understood that his advice was about more than just height. My grandfather grew up in war-torn (战乱的) Europe. He joined the army to fight for his country.“Stand straight, stand tall!” meant something else back then.
After the war, he went to America. All alone in a new country, he was worried about his future. But when he saw some other people from Europe make a living, he said to himself, “If they could do it, why couldn’t I?”
Thanks to a friend’s help, my grandfather started to sell clothes. He once told me how nervous he was on that first day of work. He was not only trying to learn the new business, but also a new language. With hard work, he finally became a successful businessman.
I am so proud to be his grandchild. His advice to me has become much more than a challenge to improve my posture (姿势). It tells me to be proud of who I am.“Stand straight, stand tall!”my grandfather told me.
And I do.
