Step 1: Lead in
1. Show some pictures to teach the new words: pierce, get ears pierced, safety, smoke, license.
2. Free talk with students
Are you allowed to do …? Why?
3. Illicit from students: When we talk about rules, we can use the sentence pattern: be (not) allowed to do sth
Step 2. Presentation
1. Show the teachers’ opinions about the rules talked about just now with the sentence patterns:
I think teenagers should be allowed to…
I don’t think teenagers should be allowed to…
Step 3. 1a
Ask students to finish 1a
Ask some students to share their answers with their partners, encourage students to give their reasons.
Step 4. 1b -1c
1. Predict:
Who are the two people in the picture?
What are they talking about?
2. Listen and finish the task in 1b, then check the answers.
3. Show an example and ask students to do pairwork in 1c.
Step 5. 2a.-2c
1. Ask students to look at the picture and read Kathy’s opinions to predict the listening.
2. Get students to listen and finish the task in 2a, then check the answers.
3. Get students to listen again and finish the task in 2b. Then check the answers.
4. Show an example and ask students to make a conversation like 2c in pairs.
Step 6. 2d.
1. Read with the following questions:
Where are they going?
How are they feeling?
What rules are they talking about? Why is there such a rule?
