National parks are large areas of public land. They provide a safe home
for local plants and animals. They help keep the air and water clean. They
also give us the best trips. Today, there are thousands of national parks
around the world. A magazine has listed 12 of the most beautiful ones in the
world that will surprise you with their amazing landscape, geographic
wonders and colorful plants and animals.

immensity of the canyon makes people think big. Every year, about 5
million people visit here. Taking a tour in the South Rim offers visitors the

If you love animals, you’ll like the Serengeti National Park in
Tanzania. The “Big Five” live here. They are the lion, African elephant,
African leopard(豹), black rhinoceros(犀牛) and African buffalo(水

hardest to catch. Now they are what people most want to see in the wild. If
you visit the park, you should never miss the migration(迁徙) of over
1.5 million wildebeest(角马) and 250,000 zebras every year. This is the
most famous site of the park.

I was in a strange city and I didn’t know the city at all. What’s more, I
could not speak a word of the language. After having spent my first day in the

that this was the simplest way of getting to know the strange city.

I got on the first bus that passed by, rode on it for several stops, and
then got off and walked on. Then I decided to turn back to my hotel for lunch.
After walking about for some time, I decided to ask the way. The trouble
was that the only word I knew of the language was the name of the street in
which I lived and I pronounced it badly.

I stopped to ask a newspaper seller. He smiled and handed me a paper. I

look in his eyes as he pointed left and right and left again. I thanked him
politely and began walking in the direction.
About an hour passed and I noticed that the houses were getting fewer
and fewer and that green fields were appearing on either side of me. I had
come all the way into the countryside.

If you meet a British person on the street, it is very possible that he or
she will apologize whether it is his or her fault(过错) or not.
It seems that Britain is becoming a nation where everyone is saying
“sorry”. Almost each person says “sorry” about eight times each day
and one eighth of the people apologize as many as 20 times a day.
一

三

六
As you may have seen, the British apologize more often than members
of other cultures. Research shows that in many cases, people’s love of
saying “sorry” in Britain goes a little further than it does in America. For
example, about 15 British people would say “sorry” while only 10 from
the US would do this if they sneezed or corrected someone’s mistake.
In the old days, “sorry” was used to express regret and sadness for
having done something wrong. But now British people use the expression as
a way of showing good manners. For example, they might say “sorry”
instead of “excuse me” “pardon” or “what”.
一

三
四

六
People in Britain also use “sorry” when they share the same feeling
with others, so they might say “sorry about the rain”.
However, British people’s use of “sorry” may make things very
confusing(难以理解的) and difficult for foreigners who are not familiar
with their ways. But actually, people in Britain pay much attention to the
feelings of others. This is the reason why they apologize every day.
