Maybe you know floods, droughts, earthquakes and so on. But have
you heard of typhoons?
Typhoons are some of the worst storms, usually around the Pacific
Ocean and the South China Sea. Most happen in July, August and
September.

How does a typhoon happen? When lots of sea water gets hot in the
summer sun, it evaporates(蒸发) into the air. This makes the air hotter.
When the air gets warm enough, it starts to move higher up into the sky.
Then, cooler air rushes in. It fills the space that is left. After the air gets
warmer, it starts to move quickly, making wind. The wind goes in
circles, and it keeps moving higher in the sky. The warmer the air gets,
the more quickly the wind moves. And when the wind moves faster than 30
metres a second, a typhoon begins.

A typhoon has two parts. One is called the “eye”. In the eye, the
wind does not move so fast. The other part is the wall of clouds around the
eye. This is where the strongest winds and hardest rains are.
Typhoons are very dangerous. In 2004, Typhoon Rananim killed 164
people in Zhejiang, and 24 people were missing. In May 2006, Severe
Typhoon Chanchu hit Guangdong and Fujian, and thousands of houses were
damaged. What can you do when a typhoon hits?
· Stay inside. Close all the windows and stay away from them.

Only small things with great love
My two little daughters and I usually go out and help others on Thankful
Thursday. Last Thursday, we were going to buy lunch for the beggars(乞
丐) in the street. Then we went to the nearest restaurant.
I ordered 15 lunches from it and drove my car to hand them out.
We gave the lunches to the beggars. They were excited. We were happy
to see that.

Then we noticed a small and old woman, asking for pocket money. We
gave her our last lunch bag. Before we got into the car, she started to speak
to us.
“No one has ever done anything like this for me before,” she said
with a smile.
“Well, I’m glad that we are the first,” I answered. “So, when
will you eat your lunch?” I asked.

She just looked at me with her big, tired brown eyes and said,
“Oh, dear, I’m not going to eat this lunch. You see, I have a little
daughter of my own. I usually can’t buy her favourite food. But today she
will be so happy!”
I didn’t know if the kids noticed the tears(泪水) in my eyes. I have
asked many times whether our actions of kindness were too small to change
anything. Yet at that moment, I realized the truth of the words: We cannot
do great things—only small things with great love.

On October 8th, I was preparing breakfast in the kitchen for my kids.
Suddenly, at 8:52 a.m. my house started shaking because of the earthquake.
I was afraid of it.
My son Ali and his sister Human were there with me. Ali who was almost
5 years old came into the kitchen and asked for something to eat. He was eating
a piece of bread when the earthquake happened. When we tried to run out,
something struck Ali and he was thrown out into the yard. Human and
I ran out of the kitchen safely.

Soon my husband came and helped us out of the ruins(废墟),
but my elder daughter Ayesha and the youngest son Jamal were missing.
My husband with other people looked for them everywhere. At last they
found Ayesha’s dead body from the ruins of her room. My son Jamal who
was 3 years old was dragged(拖) out of the ruins after six hours. We
could hear his cry at that time. The people who were dragging him out
said to him, “We have a bike for you. Just hold on.” He was so happy
after hearing about the bike when he was dragged out, but we had nothing except the dead bodies of his brother Ali and sister Ayesha.
