Our old, artificial Christmas tree was in rough shape by the time we retired it. At least a decade had passed since my wife and I bought the tree, a medium-size fake tree with built-in lights, at a Target in Brooklyn and carried it on the subway to our tiny apartment. Over the years, we dragged that tree from apartment, jammed it onto a moving truck to Los Angeles and later packed the weathered box onto another moving truck, this time to Chicago and our current home. By the end, layers of duct tape (强力胶布) held the box together, the wear and tear of a decade of delivering holiday cheer.
Our little tree looked run down, but it was the only tree our family ever knew. It stands proud and glowing in the background of photos of me and my pregnant wife during our last Christmas in Brooklyn without children. Our oldest was born a month later during a January snowstorm. The tree shows up again in the next year’s photos, this time surrounded by holiday gifts for a boy about to turn 1. Then it appears in photos of our son and his 1-month-old brother, this time with California palm trees just outside the door. And in more recent photos, our tree lights up windows overlooking shining Chicago snow. This year, after much debate, we decided to retire our dear old tree, with its bent branches and the lights that had burned out years ago. Rather than feel depressed, we used the moment to launch a new family tradition: our first real Christmas tree.
So here’s a toast to all your family’s traditions—the old and the new. I hope you enjoy this issue, which we have filled with stories of seasonal joy and holiday cheer. Happy holidays!
4. Where is the author’s present home?
A. In Chicago. B. In Brooklyn. C. In California. D. In Los Angeles.
5. Why did the author keep the old tree for so long?
A. His budget was tight. B. He was attached to it.
C. It was in good condition. D. It was environmentally-friendly.
6. Who is probably the author?
A. An editor. B. A salesman. C. A delivery man. D. A home designer.
7. What can we learn from the story?
A. The finest diamond must be cut.
B. Out with the old, in with the new.
C. Old friends and old wine are best.
D. All things in their being are good for something.
C
The ocean is a huge body of saltwater that covers about 71 percent of Earth’s surface. An estimated 97 percent of the world’s water is found in the ocean. Because of this, the ocean has a considerable impact on weather, temperature, and the food supply of humans and other organisms. Despite its size and impact on the lives of every organism on Earth, the ocean remains a mystery. More than 80 percent of the ocean has never been mapped, explored, or even seen by humans. A far greater percentage of the surfaces of the moon and the planet Mars have been mapped and studied than that of our own ocean floor.
Although there is much more to learn, oceanographers (海洋学家) have already made some amazing discoveries. For example, we know that the ocean contains towering mountain ranges and deep canyons, known as trenches (海沟), just like those on land. The peak of the world’s tallest mountain — Mount Everest in the Himalayas, measuring 8.84 kilometers (5.49 miles) high — would not even break the surface of the water if it was placed in the Pacific Ocean’s Mariana Trench or Philippine Trench, two of the deepest parts of the ocean. On the other hand, the Atlantic Ocean is relatively shallow because large parts of its seafloor are made up of continental shelves — parts of the continents that extend far out into the ocean. The average depth of the entire ocean is 3,720 meters (12,200 feet).
It is unknown how many different species call the ocean their home. It could be that more than 90 percent of the ocean’s species are still undiscovered with some scientists estimating that there are anywhere between a few hundred thousand and a few million more to be discovered. Currently, scientists know of around 226,000 ocean species. Since the ocean is so vast, there is plenty for future oceanographers from all corners of the globe to explore and discover.
8. Why does the author mention the research on the moon and Mars in paragraph 1?
A. To emphasize the wide impact of the ocean.
B. To show how scientists do space exploration.
C. To prove people’s deep fascination with space.
D. To stress how little humans know about the ocean.
9. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. Physical features of the seafloor.
B. Scientists’ discoveries about the ocean.
C. Varieties of landforms on the Earth.
D. Similarities between the land and sea.
10. What can we know from the last paragraph?
A. Ocean exploration has great potential.
B. The number of ocean species is declining.
C. Ocean pollution has become more serious.
D. Oceanographers need to do more to protect the ocean.
11. Which is the best title for the text?
A. A Big Discovery in the Deep Sea
B. The Ocean: A Mystery to Mankind
C. A Challenging Exploration of the Sea
D. The Ocean: A Vast Home to Sea Animals
D
An updated version of the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot ChatGPT was launched recently by OpenAI. Its ability to write in an intelligent and human-like manner left users impressed and also a little bit frightened. People have used ChatGPT to write entire blocks of code, television scripts, and even complete academic essays — causing fears that students might use the bot to cheat their way to an easy A.
But some college professors aren’t that concerned. While ChatGPT’s writing might seem “quite good in an abstract way”, Professor Stuart Selber, who teaches English at Pennsylvania State University, thinks it struggles to address local issues, produce an original argument, or challenge other arguments rather than just citing (引用) them. These are all key aspects of effective essay writing in his opinion. That’s why Selber doesn’t think essays written entirely by ChatGPT have any hope of scoring high grades. ChatGPT won’t replace original writing, said Selber, but it might help college students improve their work. Indeed, he thinks it might offer a shortcut for some of the more difficult tasks of essay writing, like preparing a literature review.
Dr Leah Henrickson, a lecturer at the University of Leeds, thinks that, if used carefully, AI might even make education fairer. He said: “I think there’s a lot of potential for it to help students express themselves in ways that they hadn’t necessarily thought about. This could be particularly useful for students who speak English as a second language, or for students who aren’t used to the academic writing style.” AI tools like Grammarly, which analyzes and improves written sentences, are already widely used by college students. In Henrickson’s view, ChatGPT is just the next step — and these tools aren’t going away. “Our students know that these tools exist,” she said. “Our job is to help them use them critically.”
According to Henrickson, the University of Leeds is already looking at revising its assessments in reaction to the rise in AI. It hopes to focus more on critical analysis and judgement — a human skill — rather than straightforward information, which a chatbot like ChatGPT can easily replicate.
12. What do people think of ChatGPT’s writing ability?
A. It is real but overvalued.
B. It is impressive but frightening.
C. It is as good as that of humans.
D. It is based on ready-made building blocks.
13. In what way might ChatGPT be helpful for college students according to Selber?
A. By writing an excellent essay for them.
B. By providing an original argument for them.
C. By helping them make a literature review.
D. By teaching them to develop abstract thinking
14. Why is Grammarly mentioned in the last but one paragraph?
A. To compare it with ChatGPT.
B. To prove AI tools are here to stay.
C. To indicate its usefulness is beyond praise.
D. To encourage college students to use AI tools.
15. What does the underlined word “replicate” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Copy. B. Overcome. C. Understand. D. Revise.

Figuring out what a company is like before you actually work there can be challenging. Luckily, there are a few things you can do to determine whether or not a company is a good fit for you.
First of all, know what you want. ___16___ So before you can determine whether you and a specific company would be compatible (兼容的) together, it’s important to understand what exactly you want from your employer. Many of us have an easier time identifying the things that we absolutely don’t want. That’s a good place to start.
___17___ Now comes the part when you put on your detective hat and do a little digging. The Internet will be your best friend when you’re trying to familiarize yourself with a company’s culture before ever walking through their office doors. And where exactly should you look for these culture clues? Start with the most obvious place first: the company’s website. ___18___ Do they use formal, direct language? Or is it conversational, and maybe even a little humorous? This can be a big indicator of what sort of culture the company is trying to create.
Finally, you can never fail with personal connections. ___19___ Ask if they would be willing to have a quick conversation with you about the organization in general. If you get a yes to your request for a chat, you’ll be armed with some pretty powerful and helpful information heading into your interview!
Keep these tips in mind to figure out whether you and a potential employer are a perfect match or just a recipe for disaster. ___20___
A. Learn more by asking questions.
B. Read through their copy and blog.
C. Then make sure to do your research.
D. Next, turn your attention toward their announcements.
E. After all, it’s a good thing to know before actually accepting an offer.
F. Send a quick message to a current or previous company employee by email.
G. It’s hard to make any decisions when you don’t really know what you’re looking for.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was confident at the audition (试演) for the school play and felt pleased to get a role. It just felt good to be in the play, even if I had only four or five lines. I worked hard at perfecting those lines. I repeated them over and over again. I put in the emphases and intonations (语调) that my drama teacher had suggested and, because I was on stage much longer than for just four or five lines, I had many actions to rehearse (排练) and perform. “Do them in front of a mirror,” my drama teacher had advised me. “Watch how you look; practice and rehearse as often as you can.” I did just that. I worked and worked at it. It was fun and exciting rehearsing.
Then finally the big night came. Suddenly, things felt different. The theater was full of people. As I dressed, I could hear the chatting and noises of the audience. I looked around at the other more experienced actors and saw that their previous confidence seemed to have disappeared. Had they got their makeup right? Was the costume done up correctly? What if they forgot their lines? The more people talked about their anxiety, the more nervous everyone became. The worries spread from person to another—like a baton (接力棒) being passed in a relay race—until the whole of the backstage area seemed to be full of tension and worry.
I was on stage early, at first performing my non-spoken role in the background with several other guys around the same age. When, suddenly, I heard my cue (出场提示), the lights were bright in my eyes, I couldn’t see the audience but knew there were hundreds of people out there all watching me. The words that had flowed so easily when I stood in front of a mirror didn’t want to come, and when they did I found myself hurrying into them. I tried to slow down my thoughts and my words.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
But I suddenly realized I had missed a sentence.
