Text 10
My guest on the show today is Alice Riches who started the Street Play Project in Beechwood Road where she lives.(17) Street Play Project involves local residents closing off their street for a few hours so that children have a chance to play in the street safely with the help of volunteers.(18) She started it in her street, Beechwood Road, and the idea caught on, and there are now Street Play Projects all over the city. She first had the idea when her oldest child was still a baby, so that’s about six
years ago(19)—but it took at least two years of campaigning before she was actually able to make it happen. So the project’s been up and running for four years now. She’d love to be able to close the road for longer—for the whole weekend(20), from Saturday morning until Sunday evening, for example. At the moment it’s just once a week. But when she started, it was only once a month. But she’s working on it. Now let’s welcome Alice Riches.(17)

Paul O’Sullivan lounged around his Baltimore apartment one evening in 2014,feeling bored. So, like many others, he surfed the Internet to find out just how many others on the social network shared his name. Moments later, dozens of name twins from around the world filled his screen. On a whim, he decided to send friend requests to them all.
Many of his fellow Paul O’Sullivans ignored him, but a few felt too curious to pass up his invitation. As Baltimore Paul scrolled through the other Paul O’Sullivans’ profiles, he noticed something four of them had in common: They were all musicians. Like Baltimore Paul, Rotterdam Paul sang and played the guitar. Another Paul in Manchester, England, played the bass. And Paul from Pennsylvania was a drummer. Baltimore Paul had an idea. Wouldn’t it be funny, he asked the other musical Pauls, if they formed a band called The Paul O’Sullivans? Yes, they all agreed.
Starting a band across multiple time zones proved to be tricky. Shaky WiFi and other technical difficulties meant they were often out of sync(不同步). And being even half a second off from one another wrecked their sound. To fix _____ , they created a sort of musical assembly line. Baltimore Paul and Rotterdam Paul wrote and recorded a basic track, then e-mailed it to Manchester Paul.
this
“I listen to the song over a few days,” says Manchester Paul, to get a feel for what bass arrangement seems most appropriate. “Once he recorded a bass track, he emailed it back to Baltimore Paul, who then built it into the main song. Later, Pennsylvania Paul added the drumbeat. Round and round the track went, with each member adding on his own layer until they achieved the sound they want.
The Paul O’Sullivan Band released its first original song, “Namesake”, in March 2016, which was about longdistance relationships. __________ __________________________________________________________ After all, the band had already got the hang of remote work. They used their time during the pandemic to record their first EP.
Titled Internet Famous: A Retrospective, it was released last April. “What are the odds,” says Baltimore Paul, “that a random friend request would lead not only to new music but to lasting friendships as well? Some things are just meant to be.”
And when
COVID-19 slowly shut down the world, the Pauls didn’t miss a beat.

A
根据第二段中的“They were all musicians. Like Baltimore Paul, Rotterdam Paul sang and played the guitar. Another Paul in Manchester, England, played the bass. And Paul from Pennsylvania was a drummer.(他们都是音乐家。像巴尔的摩的保罗一样,鹿特丹的保罗唱歌和弹吉他。另一个在英国曼彻斯特的保罗演奏低音电吉他。来自宾夕法尼亚州的保罗是个鼓手。)”可知,四个人都玩音乐,其不同点在于他们来自不同的地方。故选D。
25.B 代词指代题。根据第三段中的“Shaky WiFi and other technical difficulties meant they were often out of sync(不同步). And being even half a second off from one another wrecked their sound.(不稳定的无线网络和其他技术问题意味着他们经常不同步。即使只有半秒钟的延迟也会破坏他们的声音。)”可知,这个跨时区的乐队面临着无线网络不稳定和其他技术难题,因此“this”在此处指代技术障碍的存在。故选B。
26.D 推理判断题。根据第五段中的“After all, the band had already got the hang of remote work. They used their time during the pandemic to record their first EP.(毕竟,乐队已经掌握了远程工作的窍门。
故选A。

One of the greatest things about pictures is that they make no demands on you. You can look as long as you like and walk away at any time. Occasionally, people always say they feel frightened by art. Some people in the art world, wanting to establish their authority, fall back on abstractions. But what field doesn’t see a version of this phenomenon? Have you tried understanding biology or law? In my experience, there is less of this complex talk around art than around most other fields.
Art is a wide field. It’s deep. It’s diverse. You can come at the subject from countless angles. People seem to have been making art since the beginning, so the subject is an inseparable part of the whole history of humanity. But, in the end, we’re talking about pictures and sculptures. How hard is it to look at a painting? How difficult is it to walk around a sculpture? Children get it immediately. They know there’s no right or wrong when it comes to looking at art.
More than the political or economic conditions of any given era, it is art that later generations most want to remember. We remember Picasso and Matisse over the chief ministers of Britain in the 1960s. That’s because art reveals the best of us. It’s because it combines the most intelligent and the most feeling of us. It testifies, most fundamentally, to the fact that we’re alive, that people lived before us, that as a species we’re capable of making the most extraordinary things, and that human consciousness and the world beyond it are nothing short of astonishing things.
Again and again, art expresses that astonishment—that mixture of wonder and disappointment, knowing and unknowing, pleasure and pain, joy and fear.
( )28.What’s the author’s attitude towards the phenomenon in Paragraph 1?
A.Indifferent. B.Acceptable.
C.Doubtful. D.Disapproving.
( )29.What is the main idea of the first two paragraphs?
A.Art is complicated but easy.
B.Art is as complex as other fields.
C.Art is insufferable due to its abstraction.
D.Art is an inseparable part of human history.
B
A
( )30.Why does the author mention Picasso and Matisse?
A.To emphasize artists are more adorable.
B.To compare political and artistic figures.
C.To show art can spread in a broader area.
D.To illustrate the superior position of art.
D
( )31.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Art mixes abstract concepts.
B.Art brings everlasting amazement.
C.Art perfects the thoughts of beauty.
D.Art combines unsettled contradictions.
根据第一段中的“But what field doesn’t see a version of this phenomenon? (但哪个领域没有这种现象呢?)”和“In my experience, there is less of this complex talk around art than around most other fields.(根据我的经验,与大多数其他领域相比,艺术领域很少有这种复杂的讨论。)”
故选A。
第三段第一句和第二句“More than the political or economic conditions of any given era, it is art that later generations most want to remember. We remember Picasso and Matisse over the chief ministers of Britain in the 1960s.”
根据最后一段“Again and again, art expresses that astonishment—that mixture of wonder and disappointment, knowing and unknowing, pleasure and pain, joy and fear.(艺术一次又一次地表达了那种惊奇——那种惊奇与失望、知与无知、快乐与痛苦、喜悦与恐惧的结合体。)”

The majority of people are unable to commit to a healthy long-term lifestyle—although they are somehow willing to! There seems to be a paradox here.
We become more aware of the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle on a regular basis. Yet, we just don’t manage to. We may engage in a variety of shortterm projects: 1-week detox retreats or 1-month severe diets. But the benefits these short-term activities produce are quickly lost as we are dragged back to our “bad” habits in the longer term. The inability to stick to a healthy lifestyle makes us feel frustrated and unhealthy. What is the way out then?
The first step is to understand the problem more deeply: What are the main obstacles to pursuing a healthy lifestyle? Which are the fundamental aspects of a healthy lifestyle? How are they interconnected? If we understand the problem and its components more deeply, we are one step closer to coming up with a solution.
Surveys show, in 85% of cases in the US and Europe, the main obstacles to pursuing a healthy lifestyle are found to be among lack of awareness, time, selfcontrol and guidelines.
“Humans tend to heavily discount the future, meaning things that we have now are more valuable to us than things we’ll have in a few years,” said A.Braun in 2019. For this reason, we cannot correctly weigh the costs and consequences of choosing unhealthy habits today, and we tend to give in to short-term pleasures, although this means reducing longerterm benefits.
We deliberately choose to experience and enjoy shortterm pleasure, mainly because of a stressful condition we may have, or because of personality. The underlying reason for these behaviours is primarily stress, as neuroscience discoveries in fact suggest, “In general, stress results in habitual behaviour in humans, so dealing first and foremost with stress is probably advisable when you are looking to make lasting changes. Luckily, your brain can change throughout life. Decreasing stress could finally help your brain become less easily influenced by habit.”
( )32.Why do people engage in various short-term projects?
A.To delete a bad habit.
B.To keep a healthy lifestyle.
C.To go on a severe diet.
D.To solve the paradox.
B
( )33.Which of the following is the obstacle to pursuing a healthy lifestyle?
A.Lacking enough self-discipline.
B.Gaining no reward from working out.
C.Having no motive when making schedules.
D.Relying on too much guidance from others.
A
( )34.By quoting A.Braun’s words in Paragraph 5, the author wants to ________.
A.highlight the association between habits and lifestyles
B.stress the long-term value of forming healthy habits
C.show a trend of pursuing long-term pleasure
D.convey people’s commitment to a healthy lifestyle
B
( )35.What can we learn about neuroscience discoveries?
A.Changing brain activities helps decrease stress.
B.Personality contributes to one’s short-term pleasure.
C.People’s habitual behaviour tends to dominate their emotions.
D.Reducing stress is the key to sticking to a healthy lifestyle.
根据第二段中的“We become more aware of the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle on a regular basis. Yet, we just don’t manage to. We may engage in a variety of short-term projects: 1week detox retreats or 1-month severe diets.”
根据第四段“Surveys show, in 85% of cases in the US and Europe, the main obstacles to pursuing a healthy lifestyle are found to be among lack of awareness, time, selfcontrol and guidelines.” 故选A。
根据最后一段中的“The underlying reason for these behaviours is primarily stress, as neuroscience discoveries in fact suggest, ‘In general, stress results in habitual behaviour in humans, so dealing first and foremost with stress is probably advisable when you are looking to make lasting changes.’”

As the proverb goes, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” 36._____ A paper published two years ago in Nature found a connection between people’s sense of wellbeing and the scenicness(美景) of where they lived. The paper’s authors measured scenicness by conducting a survey among volunteers.
A
The connection, the paper’s authors found, held true whether a neighbourhood was urban or rural. 37._____ Nor did levels of air pollution have any influence on it. The authors also discovered that differences in volunteers’ health were better explained by the scenicness of where they lived than by the amount of green space around them.
38._____ The team behind that paper in Nature have nevertheless decided to have a go. They have adapted a computer programme to recognise beautiful landscapes, whether natural or artificial, using the criteria that a human beholder would employ. The programme’s task was

to work out, by analysing each photograph’s features in the context of its Scenic-or-Not ratings, what it is that makes a landscape scenic.
Most of the results are not surprising. Lakes scored well. So did valleys and snowy mountains. In artificial landscapes, castles, churches and cottages were seen as scenic. 39._____ The analysis did, however, confirm one important finding from the team’s previous study, which is also a message for town planners. Green spaces alone are not scenic. To be so they need to involve contours(轮廓) and trees. 40._____

B.Hospitals, garages and motels scored not so highly.
C.So people have a deep affection for where they live.
D.It bore no relation to volunteers’ social and economic status.
E.Therefore, less grass and more trees and bushes would be welcome.
F.Natural landscapes are rated as scenicness as opposed to artificial landscapes.
G.Determining what scenicness is, though, has always been frustrating for scientists.
36.A 根据上文“As the proverb goes, ‘Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.’(俗话说,‘情人眼里出西施。’)” A项“But surroundings matter.(但是环境很重要。)” 故选A。
37.D 根据上文“The connection, the paper’s authors found, held true whether a neighbourhood was urban or rural.(论文发现,无论是在城市还是在农村,这种联系都是存在的。)”和下文“Nor did levels of air pollution have any influence on it.(空气污染水平也不对其产生影响。)”可知,D项“It bore no relation to volunteers’ social and economic status.(它与志愿者的社会和经济地位无关。)”
38.G 根据下文“The team behind that paper in Nature have nevertheless decided to have a go.(尽管如此,《自然》杂志上那篇论文背后的团队还是决定试一试。)” 再根据本段最后一句“The programme’s task was to work out, by analysing each photograph’s features in the context of its ScenicorNot ratings, what it is that makes a landscape scenic.(该项目的任务是通过分析对应不同美景等级的照片的特征,找出是什么使景色成为美景。)” 由此可知,G项“Determining what scenicness is, though, has always been frustrating for scientists.(然而,对于科学家来说,确定什么是美景一直是一件令人沮丧的事情。)”
39.B 根据上文“In artificial landscapes, castles, churches and cottages were seen as scenic.(人工景观中,城堡、教堂和村舍被视为美景。)” B项“Hospitals, garages and motels scored not so highly.(医院、车库和汽车旅馆的评分不高。)”承接上文,进一步列举人工景观,并由此引出下文的结论“The analysis did, however, confirm one important finding from the team’s previous study, which is also a message for town planners. Green spaces alone are not scenic.(然而,分析确实证实了该团队之前研究的一个重要发现,这也给城市规划者带来了启示。仅有绿地并不被视为美景。)”。故选B。
40.E 根据上文“Green spaces alone are not scenic. To be so they need to involve contours(轮廓) and trees.(仅有绿地并不被视为美景,要成为美景,需要有轮廓和树木。)” E项“Therefore, less grass and more trees and bushes would be welcome.(因此,少些草,多些树和灌木是受欢迎的。)”

Last Sunday, our school held a theme activity about mental health education on the playground.
The activity lasted a whole morning. At the beginning, soft music was played to create a relaxing atmosphere. With the music, we found our place and settled ourselves into a comfortable position. The teacher gave a speech about mental health, and asked us to relax according to her instructions and think about the happy things we had experienced. Next, we shared the pleasant things with each other in groups.
Not only is this theme activity of great benefit to our mental health but it also enriches our school life.
I did it finally. After four years of struggling, studying, and working nights in the library to help pay my tuition, there were only thirty seconds of the last minute of the last exam of the last class of my college career. All I had to do now was cross the campus to my car and drive home to start my new life as a college graduate. I never imagined that my most valuable lesson off campus was awaiting me.
Halfway across campus, suddenly what was otherwise a sunny day began to cloud over. Was that a drop of rain I just felt on my cheek? What next? By the time I reached my car, I was wet through. There was a lot of traffic. I guess everyone else was in a hurry to get home and start their new lives, too.
I inched out of the parking lot and drove to the edge of campus. One more traffic light to go! The light turned green but the car in front of me didn’t move. The driver began to honk. Then he moved around whatever was blocking his path and sped off. I began to do the same when I realised that the obstruction was a man in a wheelchair. In fact, I recognised him. He
was one of my fellow classmates. I had seen him many times over the past four years. Chairbound as he was, he was gentle and always wore a smile. But I had never spoken to him.
I was in a hurry. I had something important to do. I began to drive off. I glanced in my rearview mirror and saw the man struggling to get his chair out of the muddy crossing. “Surely someone else would help him,” I thought. But what if everyone else thought that, too? I pulled my car over, ran back to Jordan and got him out of the crossing. But should I push him to wherever he was going, in the rain, in the mud?
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

As I was sorting through this moral dilemma, I looked down at Jordan._____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
He was trembling in the rain. But he was smiling. For some reason, he didn’t seem to mind. He clearly didn’t expect me to do more than I had already done. He began to wheel off up the muddy sidewalk. I couldn’t leave him now. I locked my car and quickly caught up with him.

When we finally reached Jordan’s apartment, Jordan insisted that I come in and meet his mother.______________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I began to push. It was uphill for what seemed like a mile. Every hundred yards or so, with great effort, Jordan would crane his neck around so that he could look up at me in appreciation. “How could I have even thought of leaving him?” I thought.
When I got inside, not only was I surprised, but I was impressed by the efficiency and good taste. Each item was carefully placed and within Jordan’s reach. I followed Jordan to the back bedroom and was introduced to his bedridden mother who I later

found out had suffered from a stroke some years earlier. His mother expressed her gratitude and said: “In the last four years, not one person has ever helped my son. It’s not that he needs help, but it gets lonely out there sometimes.” I didn’t know what to say. I stayed for dinner. Jordan and I celebrated our last day of school together. That day, I learned my most valuable lesson off-campus.
