He covers subjects such as climate change, modern technology and international events. Although Brian uses rhyme in some of his works, it is extremely effective, especially as so many are humorous poems. He has a skill for word play. He also shares his poems online, making them more accessible to today’s audience. Ada Limón Ada is a well-known American poet, and has released several collections of poetry. Her poems are deeply rooted in nature, emotion and relatable metaphors. Her work feels like a natural progression from the poetry covered in schools. There is still an artistic weaving and careful placement of words, but the messages and inner meanings are more suitable for the modern audience. Tracy K. Smith Tracy was the winner of the Best First Book by an AfricanAmerican poet, with her 2003 collection, The Body’s Question. Her poems cover important issues around race and family, going beyond from childhood into adulthood and much more. Each is easy to understand and relate to, while at the same time, deeply personal. She has a natural talent for connecting with her audience. Mel Wardle Woodend Mel has several published collections including two books for children, making poetry more accessible to them. She also has a collection called Just a Thought, which raises awareness of mental health issues. This topic was rarely discussed at school, so Mel’s work is progressive and inviting to those who may not tick the typical boxes of someone who enjoys poetry. ( )1.What is Brian Bilston’s poetry mainly concerned with? A.School life. B.Today’s issues. C.Historic events. D.Today’s audience. ( )2.Who is talented in connecting with poem readers? A.Brian Bilston. B.Ada Limón. C.Tracy K. Smith. D.Mel Wardle Woodend. B C ( )3.What do you know about Just a Thought? A.It appeals to school students. B.It concerns mental health issues. C.It is intended for younger readers. D.It is rarely discussed at school now. 根据Brian Bilston部分的“Brian Bilston’s poetry is definitely more relevant to today’s issues.” 根据Tracy K.Smith部分的“She has a natural talent for connecting with her audience.” 根据Mel Wardle Woodend部分的“She also has a collection called Just a Thought, which raises awareness of mental health issues.” B。 B No poem should ever be discussed or “analysed”, until it has been read aloud by someone—a teacher or a student. Better, perhaps, is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end, so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears of it. All discussions of poetry are, in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is, eventually, the most concrete “interpretation (解释)” of it, suggesting tone, rhymes, and meaning all at once. Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice, on records or on films, is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching cannot replace the student and the teacher reading it or, best of all, reciting it. I have come to think, in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than “analysing” it and “exchanging views”, if there isn’t time for both. I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry and take it easy when we are reading a poem. Poetry is “a criticism of life”, and “a heightening(提升) of life”. It is “a most appropriate approach to the truth of feeling”, and it “can transform your life”. It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies. I am not saying that every English teacher must try out poetryteaching. Those who don’t like it should not be forced to convey that negative feeling to anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it. ( )4.What should one do to have a better understanding of a poem? A. Discuss it with others. B. Analyse it by himself/herself. C. Copy it down in a notebook. D. Practise reading it aloud. ( )5.According to the writer, one of the purposes of teaching English is to get students to ________. A. understand life B. enjoy poetry C. become teachers D. become poets D B ( )6.What does the last sentence in the third paragraph imply? A. More stress should be laid on the teaching of poetry. B. Poetry is more important than any other literature genre. C. One cannot enjoy life fully without a good understanding of poetry. D. Poetry is the foundation of all languages and literature courses. A ( )7.The underlined phrase “make room” in the last paragraph could be best replaced by “ ________”. A. build a house B. provide equipment C. leave a certain amount of time D. leave enough space 【语篇解读】本文是一篇议论文。 根据第二段第一句“All discussions of poetry are, in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is, eventually, the most concrete ‘interpretation (解释)’ of it, suggesting tone, rhymes, and meaning all at once.” 根据第三段中的“I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry and take it easy when we are reading a poem.” 根据第三段中的“Poetry is ‘a criticism of life’, and ‘a heightening(提升) of life’. It is ‘a most appropriate approach to the truth of feeling’, and it ‘can transform your life’. It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies.” 故选A。 Poems create vivid pictures and tell stories by using language creatively. Readers enjoy the challenge of trying to understand the poet’s intention in writing a poem.
