Social networking websites like Twitter and Facebook can have a negative influence on people's moral values and can make them indifferent to human suffering, according to a new report by researchers at the University of Southern California (USC).
New findings suggest that the streams of information provided by the websites are too fast for the brain's moral sense to digest and could affect
young people's emotional development. Before the brain can fully process and absorb a story of pain and suffering, it is attacked by the next news or the latest Twitter update, according to the USC neuroscience group. Qualities such as admiration and compassion(同情) take much longer to process, said one of the study's authors, Antonio Damasio.
The results of the study were based on reallife stories that were intended to induce(诱发) admiration for virtue or skill, or compassion for physical or social suffering in 13 volunteer individuals. In the end, it was found that the participants needed six to eight seconds in order to fully
react to stories of virtue or social suffering. However, once awakened, the responses lasted far longer than the volunteers' reactions to stories focused on physical pain.
New findings raise questions about the emotional cost, in particular, for the developing young brain, of heavy dependence on an extremely fast stream of news snippets(片段) obtained by means of TV, the Internet or social networks such as Twitter and Facebook. “If things are happening too fast, you may not ever fully experience emotions about other people's mental states, and that would have effects on your morality,” said
Damasio.
In general, normal life events will always give people opportunities to experience admiration and compassion. But activities such as reading books and socialising with friends, where individuals can define their morals, are being gradually replaced by alarming and fastmoving social networking, and people may be led away from learning about humanity.
( )1.Why can social networking websites have a negative influence on people's moral values according to the text?
A.They promote negative moral values for people in suffering.
B.They always contain lots of stories of social suffering in the real life.
C.The information comes so fast that there isn't enough time to digest it.
D.The news on such sites is based on reallife stories of sadness and suffering.
C
( )2.What can we learn from the text?
A.People's moral values are formed by fast public information.
B.The development of young people's brains depends strongly on normal life events.
C.People can experience other people's emotions quickly because of fast information.
D.There were 13 volunteer individuals who took part in the study on social media.
D
( )3.What may continue to be written after the last paragraph?
A.The ways to make people watch online videos less.
B.The ways to make social websites more popular.
C.The ways to make more reports published.
D.The ways to make people's brains less complex.
A
根据第二段第一句“New findings suggest that the streams of information provided by the websites are too fast for the brain's moral sense to digest and could affect young people's emotional development.(新的发现表明,网站提供的信息流太快,大脑的道德感无法消化,可能会影响年轻人的情感发展。)”
根据第三段第一句“The results of the study were based on reallife stories that were intended to induce(诱发)
admiration for virtue or skill, or compassion for physical or social suffering in 13 volunteer individuals.(研究结果基于真实生活中的故事,这些故事旨在诱发13名志愿者对美德或技能的钦佩,或对身体或社会痛苦的同情。)”
结合最后一段中的“But activities such as reading
books and socialising with friends, where individuals can define their morals, are being gradually replaced by alarming and fastmoving social networking, and people may be led away from learning about humanity.(但是,诸如读书和与朋友社交等个人可以定义自己道德的活动正逐渐被令人担忧的快速发展的社交网络所取代,人们可能会因此而无法了解人性。)” 故选A。

When I was 7 years old, my father resigned(辞职) from his job as a college professor. It created real__1__ risk for our family. But he felt that job forced him to __2__ his principles, because nothing was more important to him than moral principles. That's why he chose to leave the job.
That __3__ decision was a model of my father's way of raising his kids—“Walk your talk. Live your values”. He urged me to work hard,
and I saw him studying night after night to get another degree and __4__ parttime jobs to pay the bills.
Raising kids has never been easy. But the challenge of helping boys find their way to a purposeful adult life is particularly __5__ these days. Therefore, we can't lose sight of the important role fathers play in __6__ sons into men of character.
A father has a huge __7__ that can spread beyond the family. Without a father at home, boys face a higher risk of dropping out of college. On the contrary, the __8__ of fathers in a community could even
positively influence fatherless boys. What explains this value? Football players will study the playbook, but they would prefer to reach for a coach who __9__ it on the field. Similarly, it's about being a living example. It's the model boys follow—not the speech.
Now, as a father, I __10__ ask myself the question, “What can I do to show my son the way?” That's one reason why I joined the army to serve the country later. I did not want to __11__ my children to follow my lead, but rather to show what it looked like to be more loyal to your country than to yourself. “I don't always have wisdom. __12__ let me show you
what it's like to be a man.”
It's hard to __13__ my life without my father's influence. Fatherhood is a __14__ that cannot be replaced by others. As a boy goes forward through life, his father should be __15__ the way.

此处为固定句型:it be+adj.+to do sth.,意为“做某事是……的”,其中it是形式主语,不定式是真正的主语。故填it。
beauty
故填an。
