Are flash floods becoming more serious? According to the Environment Agency (EA) around 5.2 million properties in England alone are at risk of flooding. Climate change is bringing more unpredictable weather patterns, wetter weather and rising sea levels. Therefore protecting your home from flooding has never been more important. Here are some things you can do.
First, stay informed. Download the Met Office weather app and allow notices. This app will provide you with real-time weather warnings allowing you to take appropriate measures. Depending on the severity of the warning this could range from ensuring you have a good supply of drinking water to leaving. Extreme weather events are an unstoppable force — sometimes leaving the area will be your only safe option.
Second, know the level of risk by looking at flood maps. You may be required to have flood insurance if you live in a high-risk area.
Third, create an emergency plan. If you need to leave in a hurry, do you have a place to stay? Also, could you weather the storm? Make sure you always keep emergency supplies to last several days, including a first-aid case. Having a way of recharging your mobile phone is worth considering too.
But be particularly careful when travelling by car. Don’t drive through flooded streets — it’s difficult to judge the water depth, and roadways hidden below the water can collapse. If floodwaters cause your vehicle to lose control, give it up and seek the higher ground. Rapidly rising water can sweep the vehicle away. Know your surroundings and head to the higher ground, and listen to the radio updates when in a flood.
Plan for the worst; hope for the best. In March of this year, the Met Office predicted that extreme rainfall events could be four times as frequent by 2080 compared to the 1980s. In the face of increasing climate-related challenges, adopting a proactive approach to flood protection seems increasingly advisable.
24. Why does the author ask the question in paragraph 1?
A. To confirm an idea. B. To introduce a topic.
C. To conclude the text. D. To express some doubts.
25. What are the drivers especially advised to do if travelling?
A. Avoid the flooded streets in particular. B. Get rid of necessary supplies if necessary.
C. Purchase flood insurance in full measure. D. Keep the weather app updated over time.
26. What kind of writing skills does the author use in the last paragraph?
A. By analyzing causes. B. By listing relevant data.
C. By describing processes. D. By making comparisons.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. What Is a Flash Flood?
B. Do Flash Floods Need Controlling?
C. Are Flash Floods Becoming More Serious?
D. How to Protect Ourselves from Flash Floods?
【答案】24. B 25. A 26. D 27. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。由于气候变化,突发性山洪变得更加严重,文章介绍了应对这种自然灾害的一些措施。
【24题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“Are flash floods becoming more serious? According to the Environment Agency (EA) around 5.2 million properties in England alone are at risk of flooding. Climate change is bringing more unpredictable weather patterns, wetter weather and rising sea levels. Therefore protecting your home from flooding has never been more important.
根据倒数第二段中“But be particularly careful when travelling by car. Don’t drive through flooded streets—it’s difficult to judge the water depth, and roadways hidden below the water can collapse. (但开车旅行时要特别小心。不要在被水淹没的街道上开车——很难判断水深,而且隐藏在水下的道路可能会坍塌)”可知,司机们被特别建议在出行时避开被水淹没的街道。故选A项。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“In March of this year, the Met Office predicted that extreme rainfall events could be four times as frequent by 2080 compared to the 1980s. (今年3月,英国气象局预测,到2080年,极端降雨事件的频率可能是20世纪80年代的四倍)”可知,作者使用了作比较的写作方法,来突显极端降雨明显增多。故选D项。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“Therefore protecting your home from flooding has never been more important. Here are some things you can do. (因此,保护你的家园免受洪水的侵袭从未像现在这样重要。这里有一些你可以做的事情)”可知,文章主要介绍了应对愈发严重的突发性山洪的一些措施。因此,D项“如何保护自己免受突发性山洪侵袭?”契合文章主旨,适合作为文章标题。故选D项。
C
Research has shown that using mobile phones, especially for social media, can be an escape from our regular lives. In an increasingly hectic and fast-paced world, our phones provide a way to focus on something else. They offer an instant diversion (转移), a way to temporarily ease discomfort or avoid the problems in our lives.
The research also noted that this behavior is linked to the fear of missing out (FOMO), social anxiety that exciting or interesting events are happening somewhere else and that we are not to take part. People who experience high levels of FOMO have been found to be more likely to give in to urges to write and check text messages while driving, as well as to use social media more often directly after waking, while going to sleep and during meals.
This FOMO can lead to an unhealthy attachment to the phone, resulting in an inability to resist the urge to reach for it. This dependency is further fueled by the instant satisfaction provided by social media, games, and other apps.
Using our phones, particularly for social media, stimulates the release of dopamine (多巴胺), a neurotransmitter(神经递质) associated with pleasure and reward. This feeling can be irresistible, leading to a cycle where we constantly check our phones for that next “hit” of dopamine. These personality features include low self-control and high attention impulsiveness (冲动), which is the tendency to act on sudden impulses.
Research is ongoing, but some studies suggest that overuse of mobile phones can negatively affect sleep quality, social relationships, and even mental health. Our teenagers are not immune to mobile phone dependency either. While our phones provide us with many benefits, it’s important to maintain a balanced relationship. It’s not about removing screen time but understanding its impact and healthily managing our usage.
28. What does the underlined word “hectic” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Independent B. Commercial C. Busy D. Odd.
29. What kind of behaviour is regarded as FOMO?
A. Checking social media constantly. B. Fearing of socializing with others.
C. Taking an online course in literature. D. Uploading food photos on social media.
30. What is the main finding of the study mentioned in the passage?
A. Smartphone dependency is a universal problem.
B. Constant smartphone use leads to social anxiety.
C. FOMO is the primary cause of smartphone dependency.
D. FOMO is linked to low self-control and high attention impulsiveness.
31. What is the author’s main purpose of writing the article?
A. To convince us of the dangers of FOMO.
B. To persuade us to put our smartphones down.
C. To tell us to use smartphones wisely and healthily.
D. To remind us to rise to many urgent matters instantly.
【答案】28. C 29. A 30. D 31. C

Chinese scientists have successfully transplanted the liver of a gene-edited pig into a brain-dead human subject to imitate treatment for a patient with liver failure, indicating the potential for gene-edited pig livers to replace human livers. It was the world’s first-ever reported case of pig-to-human liver xenotransplantation (异种器官移植).
The successful progress of this research marks a significant breakthrough in the field of xenotransplantation and a crucial step forward for xenogeneic liver transplantation clinical research, providing a theoretical basis and data support for future clinical applications.
The research explored for the first time the probability of xenotransplantation of a genetically edited pig liver into a human body, achieving breakthroughs in originality in terms of scientific theory innovation, core technological challenges, and military medical applications. It will play an irreplaceable role in treatment and repair, functional reconstruction, and transplantation substitution (代替物), especially in vital organ transplantation.
China has nearly 400 million liver disease patients, including over 7 million with cirrhosis (肝硬化), and the number of patients with liver failure is 300,000 to 500,000 every year. In cases of liver failure, liver transplantation is the only effective cure. However, the number of organs donated by humans is far smaller than the demand, so carrying out xenotransplantation research is of great importance and is expected to benefit more patients with end-stage liver disease.
The gene-edited pig used in the liver transplant was provided by Chengdu-based Clonorgan Biotechnology. The researchers used gene-editing technology to remove three pig antigens (抗原) that cause rejection (排斥) and replaced them with three human proteins.
The receiver was a patient with a serious head injury who was proved to be brain dead after three assessments. The family agreed to participate in the scientific research free of charge, contributing to the advancement of medical science. The team led by Dou and Tao has been experimenting with xenotransplantation for 11 years. It had previously completed multiple organ transplants from pigs to monkeys.
32. Why did xenotransplantation mark a significant breakthrough for China?
A. It introduced new medicines to prevent organ rejection.
B. It proved the potential for organs from various animals.
C It guaranteed a sufficient supply of pigs for transplants.
D. It offered a prospect (前景) of replacement organs through gene editing.
33. What is xenotransplantation aimed at according to the text?
A. Removing pig antigens.
B. Carrying out scientific research.
C. Treating for patients with diseases.
D. Completing multiple organ transplants from pigs to monkeys.
34. What is the author’s attitude toward the research?
A. Doubtful. B. Favourable. C. Unconcerned. D. Negative.
35. What can we learn from the text?
A. The data won’t benefit future clinical applications.
B. The number of organs donated by humans can meet the demands.
C. The research is uncertainty to patients with end-stage liver disease.
D. The breakthrough lies in an experienced team and advanced technologies.
【答案】32. D 33. C 34. B 35. D

Everyone’s first job is special, because you gain useful experience that you can use in other positions in future. It also teaches you about the value of money.
When I was about sixteen years old, I wanted to buy albums of my favourite band, but I did not have any money. This was because the money my parents gave me was just enough to get by. I had to find a part-time job in order to purchase the music I wanted.
Luckily, I found that there were many old people who needed help in my neighbourhood. And I chose the oldest person I knew, Mrs. Hudson, who was over eighty years old, and could not tend her garden anymore. She had flowers, a grass lawn, and some tomato plants. I knocked on her door, trying to build up enough courage to ask her for work. She answered that indeed she needed help in her garden.
My first job was to pull out weeds. I got down on my knees and began to pull them out one by one in her front yard and backyard. Finishing this tiring and boring task, I mowed her lawn front and back. That was the first day of my job, and it took me about two hours. After that, I was paid ten dollars for my work. It was less than I thought, but at least I had earned my first money.
After getting that ten dollars, I intended to go to the supermarket to buy my favourite album. I chose a nice morning to do it because I knew it would be a memorable moment when I was able to buy what I liked through my efforts. But on the way to supermarket, I happened to see my mom “working” on the opposite side of the road. Actually, I had never seen how she worked before, I just knew she was a saleswoman.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】范文
Under the burning sun, my mom was distributing leaflets (分发传单) to passers-by, sweating all over. Once a man or woman passed by, my mom would give a piece of paper to him or her. Someone refused by slightly waving his hand and someone just ignored her without looking at her. Of course, there was someone who accepted the paper from my mom but would then throw it into a garbage can not far away. Seeing the scene, I couldn’t help but feel guilty. Tears welling up in my eyes, I murmured, “It’s so hard for mom to earn money.”
Then I continued making my way to the supermarket, and suddenly a good idea occurred to me. I bought a portable electric fan for mom instead of an album for myself. After that, I returned to the place where my mom worked. She mistook me for a passer-by and gave me a piece of paper. I took it and gave her the electric fan. Surprised to find out it was me, she mildly scolded me for my wasting money. I told her I bought it with the money I earned. She accepted it with a big smile on her face. It was then that I came to understand the value of money.

Are you looking for a unique spot to visit? There are plenty of things to see and do in the beautiful Western Canada cities of Vancouver and Victoria.
Dr Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden
Chinatown is an important link to Vancouver’s history. A short walk takes you to the Dr Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden. Its design includes three philosophies: Daoism, Buddhism and Confucianism. Features made of rock and water, stone and bamboo, and circles and squares emphasize the contrast of emotion and intellect, with the intent that you leave feeling more at peace.

At 430 feet, it is the longest foot suspension bridge in the world, high above a raging blue river. It is strong enough to hold 110,000kg, which makes sure to you cross the way safely, and is far different from the original 1889 rope bridge it used to be.
Fairmont Pacific Rim Nordic Spa

Surrounded by harbour and mountain views, you could make the most of the warm fires, comfortable robes, pool and hot-water bath. From the floor to the cold pool you spent joyful moments soaking (浸泡) in the rooftop hot-water bath, listening to birds.
Victoria Miniature (微型;微型的) Museum
The biggest tourist attraction in Victoria Miniature World is the wonderful world of miniatures, with 85 miniature dioramas (实景模型) and displays of popular tourist attractions from all over the world. They include castles of Europe, the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, and a miniature copy of the Great Canadian Railway in the 1880s.

25. What are the drivers especially advised to do if travelling?
A. Avoid the flooded streets in particular. B. Get rid of necessary supplies if necessary.
C. Purchase flood insurance in full measure. D. Keep the weather app updated over time.

D
C. It guaranteed a sufficient supply of pigs for transplants.
B The number of organs donated by humans can meet the demands.
C. The research is uncertainty to patients with end-stage liver disease.
D. The breakthrough lies in an experienced team and advanced technologies.

72. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Everyone’s first job is special, because you gain useful experience that you can use in other positions in future. It also teaches you about the value of money.
When I was about sixteen years old I wanted to buy albums of my favourite band, but I did not have any money.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Under the burning sun, my mom was distributing leaflets (分发传单) to passers-by, sweating all over.

Then I continued making my way to the supermarket, and suddenly a good idea occurred to me.
