For most of us, the world’s southern-most point seems like a pretty place, but for Hannah, Hannalore, Sophie and Julia, it’s home. Each year they spend five months living and working in Port welcoming visiting ships and, best of all, watching over the native colony of penguins(企鹅).
They live on a tiny island the size of a football pitch, but share it with about 2000 gentoo penguins and their chicks, as well as other birds. Life here is different every day and depends on weather and ice conditions, as well as the visiting ships’ schedules. Port Lockroy is one of the most visited places in Antarctica, with one to three ships visiting a day. Between ship visits they have other duties to attend to. These include maintenance jobs, sending postcards from the post office, checking conditions on the historical items in the museum and monitoring the penguin colonies and other wildlife.
Hannah spends much time stamping people’s postcard, which makes her happy to think of the joy over 70,000 people per year get when they receive a postcard from Antarctica, and the most southerly post office in the world! For Sophie, the most amazing thing about my job is being able to live and work with my feathery friends, the penguins. Sophie says they have to make sure the penguins are not disturbed when they are resting or waddling their way back to their nests. They mark specific routes for visitors to walk on so that they don’t use the penguins’ highways. Part of their job is also to count the penguin colony when after they've laid their eggs, then again when the chicks are born and when the chicks are old enough to venture beyond the nest. The information collected will help scientists know if the breeding season has been a successful one or not.
4. What can we learn from the passage?
A. How to live and work in Antarctica.
B. What the real life is like in Antarctica.
C. What the four women do in Antarctica.
D. How to explore the beauty of Antarctica.
5. The duties of the four women include________.
A. posting wildlife to people around the world.
B. changing the weather to preserve historical items.
C. recording the data of the ice conditions in Port Lockroy.
D. collecting information about the breeding season of penguins.
6. Which of the following is TRUE about Port Lockroy?
A. Postcards from Port Lockroy are free of charge.
B. Port Lockroy welcomes the most tourists in Antarctica.
C. Weather is a factor to consider if people are to visit Port Lockroy.
D. When visiting Port Lockroy, tourists can travel wherever as they like.
7. In which our column of the newspaper are you most likely to read the passage ?
A. Book review. B. People in the news.

The driver who cuts you off in traffic. The neighbors who don't pick up after their dog.Situations such as these get our hearts racing and send our stress levels skyrocketing.Anger isn't a pleasant feeling. Some of us bottle up the emotion, while others explode in a wild rage (狂怒).Both habits do considerable harm to our bodies, our minds, and our relationships.
“Anger may fee1 uncomfortable and a lot of people think they have to get rid of their anger," says Patrick Keelan, a registered psychologist in Calgary, Alberta.“But anger is an emotion built into us to signal that something needs to be addressed. When we take notice of that signal and actually wrestle with the problem instead of turning a blind eye to it, we' re usually much better for it.”
Unfortunately, many of us have been conditioned to keep our emotions hidden.Increasingly, research is suggesting that this can have long-term effects on our health.Investigators at the University of Rochester noticed that people who contain their emotions tend to live shorter lives. When we're angry, stress hormones are released, which can make us more likely to develop a wide range of diseases, including diabetes, depression, immune related conditions.
Is it better, then, to scream and howl whenever something makes you mad? That's probably the reason why“rage rooms" have popped up in many American cities, where folks are invited to let steam off by violently smashing (打碎) stuff in a“safe" environment. However, the research indicates that when people display anger aggressively, it can actually increase the intensity of the anger -- and increase the likelihood of aggressive actions in the future. It doesn't take much imagination to predict how such behavior can affect your relationship with your spouse, your kids, or your colleagues. It also hurts your health.A large 2016 study at McMaster University found that people are more than twice as likely to have a heart attack after an angry explosion.
If we shouldn't bottle up our angry feelings but aggressive behavior isn't healthy either, how should we handle things that tick us of? It's the extreme highs and lows that cause the damage. If you're able to apply techniques that smooth out some of those peaks and valleys, you can have a gentler ride.
8. What does the underlined phrase“bottle up" in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Build up.
B. Hold back.
C. Let off.
D. Bring out.
9. What does Patrick Keelan think of anger?
A. Uncomfortable and avoidable.
B. Terrible and threatening.
C. Confusing and complex.
D. Normal and natural.
10. What is the consequence of displaying anger aggressively?
A It leads to people's depression.
B. It warns people against violence.
C. It adds to people's anger.
D. It helps people to calm down.
11. What will be talked about if the passage is continued?
A. Possible causes of anger.
B. Tips on handling anger.
C. Possible harm of anger.
D. Tips on avoiding anger.
D
Alexa is Amazon’s cloud-based voice service available on hundreds of millions of devices from Amazon and third-party device manufacturers. With Alexa, you can build natural voice experiences that offer customers a way to interact with the technology they use every day.
Alexa is always eavesdropping (窃听). (So are Siri, Google Assistant, and any other virtual assistant you invite into your home.) This is and isn’t as horrible as it sounds. Although it’s true that the device can hear everything you say within range of its microphones, it is listening for its wake word before it starts recording.Once it hears that —“Alexa” is the default (默认), but there are other options — everything in the following few seconds is considered to be a command or a request and is sent to (and stored on) servers in the cloud, where the correct response is triggered. Think of a smart speaker like a dog: It’s always listening, but it understands only “cookie,” “walk,” or “Buddy.” Everything else goes right over its head.
Every time Alexa hears a command, Amazon — its parent company — has just learned something about you. Maybe the company learned only that you like to listen to the Police, or that you like funny jokes, or that you turn your lights off at 11 p.m. every night. If you were to say “Alexa, where should I bury the body?” you’re not going to have the police showing up at your door. (I know because I’ve tried it.)
Alexa does make mistakes.Sometimes this can be funny, such as when Alexa hears its wake word in a TV show.Other times it’s more serious, including an instance in 2018 when Alexa mistakenly sent an entire private conversation to a random person’s Echo device. Occasionally there are even humans listening to your request for weather reports or trying to figure out what you meant when you added “mangosteens” to your shopping list. Sound disturbing? You likely already agreed to it in the app’s terms of use when you installed the device.
What bits of privacy are you willing to sacrifice for the convenience provided by a smart speaker? If you trust that Amazon’s intentions are no more immoral than getting a better idea of what you want to buy on Prime Day, then you have your answer. If you worry about your private information falling into the hands of the wrong people, then you have another answer.
12. Why does the author compare smart speakers to dogs?
A. To show smart speakers are life companions like dogs.
B. To show smart speakers are sensitive to users’ commands.
C. To show smart speakers are woken by specific words.
D. To show wake words for smart speakers are different.
13. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. The tech company knows less than users imagine.
B. The tech company is spying on users’ everyday life..
C. The tech company turns a blind eye to some crimes.
D. The tech company is interested in users’ music taste.
14. Which of the following best describes Alexa?
A. All-round.
B. Imperfect.
C. Funny.
D. Immoral.
15. What does the author think of using smart speakers?
A. It is a matter of opinion.
B. Privacy is a high price to pay.
C. It is part and parcel of life.
D. Convenience always comes first.

Trust
“Settle down!” Mr. Taylor was trying to calm the boys with a loud voice. The moment they entered the gym and saw the climbing walls towering over them the boys got excited and started making noises. But Stevie was an exception, who was standing aside looking at his thin arms silently. Stevie didn’t like climbing. It wasn’t his thing. Getting along with people wasn’t his thing, either. He just felt nobody liked or trusted him at school.
Then came the coach, who taught the boys some basic skills. He said everyone should have a climbing partner and showed them how to belay (保护) their partner. “If you are a climber, trust your belayer and challenge yourself. Belayers, please remember that your partner’s life depends on you.”
The moment he finished, the boys couldn’t wait to match themselves with a partner except Stevie, who was left alone wandering around the gym. Noticing his embarrassment, Mr. Taylor raised his voice and said, “I need someone I can really trust to team up with!” He looked around. Then his gaze fell upon Stevie. “How about you, Stevie? Would you like to be my belayer?” “Me?” Stevie widened his eyes, surprised to hear Mr. Taylor even say his name. He had thought he was invisible. “I guess,” Stevie managed a weak smile.
Nervous as he was he plucked up courage. “It doesn’t matter who gets to the top first. It’s about giving it a go.” Hearing Mr. Taylor’s words, Stevie gritted (咬紧牙关) his teeth and moved up slowly, his face pressed against the rough surface. “Done it!” Stevie finally called from the top with excitement. Then Mr. Taylor started to let him down through a perfect control of the rope.“Well done,” said Mr. Taylor when Stevie landed on the floor.
Now it’s Stevie’s turn to control the rope. Bearing in mind his responsibility, Stevie carefully watched as Mr. Taylor climbed up, pulling in the rope hand over hand. He felt his heart racing wildly. Finally, Mr. Taylor arrived at the top. “Ready to let me down now?” said Mr. Taylor. “Okay,” Stevie took a deep breath, his palms sweating uncontrollably.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

B. Terrible and threatening.
C. Confusing and complex.

A. It leads to people's depression.
B. It warns people against violence.
C. It adds to people's anger.
D. It helps people to calm down.
11. What will be talked about if the passage is continued?
A. Possible causes of anger.

B 9. D 10. C 11. B
根据第一段画线短语所在句子的让步状语从句“while others explode in a wild rage (而其他人则勃然大怒)以及前一句“Anger isn't a pleasant feeling.”愤怒不是一种愉快的感觉。可知,有些人抑制住自己的情绪。推知“bottle up”的意思是“抑制,阻止”,B项“hold back”符合此意,故选B项。
根据第二段Patrick Keelan所说的话“But anger is an emotion built into us to signal that something needs to be addressed. When we take notice of that signal and actually wrestle with the problem instead of turning a blind eye to it, we' re usually much better for it.(但愤怒是一种内在的情感,它会发出需要解决某些问题的信号。当我们注意到这些信号并实际解决问题而不是对其视而不见时,我们通常会做得更好。)由此判断出,他认为愤怒是正常且自然的,故选D项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“However, the research indicates that when people display anger aggressively, it can actually increase the intensity of the anger -- and increase the likelihood of aggressive actions in the future.(然而,研究表明,当人们以攻击性的方式表达愤怒时,实际上会增加愤怒的强度——并增加未来采取攻击性行为的可能性。)可知以攻击性方式表达愤怒会增加一个人的愤怒。故选C项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段提出问题“If we shouldn't bottle up our angry feelings but aggressive behavior isn't healthy either, how should we handle things that tick us of?(如果我们不应该抑制我们的愤怒情绪,但攻击性行为也不健康,我们应该如何处理让我们生气的事情?)结合最后一句“If you're able to apply techniques that smooth out some of those peaks and valleys, you can have a gentler ride.(如果你能运用一些技巧来消除一些高峰和低谷,你就能有一个温和的旅程。)可推知接下来的内容应该是关于如何处理愤怒的建议/技巧。故选B项。
B Privacy is a high price to pay.
C. It is part and parcel of life.
D. Convenience always comes first.
C 13. A 14. B 15. A
根据文章第二段“Think of a smart speaker like a dog: It’s always listening, but it understands only “cookie,” “walk,” or “Buddy.” Everything else goes right over its head.”
根据原文第三段“Every time Alexa hears a command, Amazon — its parent company — has just learned something about you. Maybe the company learned only that you like to listen to the Police, or that you like funny jokes, or that you turn your lights off at 11 p.m. every night. If you were to say "Alexa, where should I bury the body? " you're not going to have the police showing up at your door. (I know because I've tried it.)(每当Alexa听到一个命令,它的母公司亚马逊就会了解到一些关于你的信息。也许公司只知道你喜欢听警察的话,或者你喜欢有趣的笑话,或者你每天晚上11点关灯。如果你说“Alexa,我应该把尸体埋在哪里?”“你不会让警察出现在你家门口的。(我知道是因为我试过。))”可知, Alexa可以在听到命令口令后使其公司听到我们在做什么,但它并不会对我们具体在做的事有更详细的了解。因此推断此段讲述内容为技术公司了解的用户信息远比我们想象中的要少。故选A。
根据第四段的“Alexa does make mistakes. Sometimes this can be funny, such as when Alexa hears its wake word in a TV show.Other times it's more serious, including an instance in 2018 when Alexa mistakenly sent an entire private conversation to a random person's Echo device.(Alexa确实会犯错。有时这很有趣,比如当Alexa在电视节目中听到它的唤醒词时。其他时候则更为严重,包括2018年Alexa错误地将整个私人对话发送到随机用户的Echo设备上。)”可知,Alexa确实会犯错。有时这可能很有趣,也有更严重的时候,因此推断Alexa也会犯错并不是完美无缺的。故选B。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“What bits of privacy are you willing to sacrifice for the convenience provided by a smart speaker? If you trust that Amazon’s intentions are no more immoral than getting a better idea of what you want to buy on Prime Day, then you have your answer. If you worry about your private information falling into the hands of the wrong people, then you have another answer.” 故选A。

“(receive) a Nobel Prize”作后置定语,修饰名词词组the first female scientist,当名词前有序数词修饰时,用不定式作后置定语;“(award) for her contributions to fight against malaria”作伴随状语,与其逻辑主语Tu Youyou之间是被动关系,用过去分词表被动。故填to receive;awarded。
39. Tu and her team managed to find ______ (solve) to the problem.
40. With more knowledge ________ (come) a deeper, more wonderful mystery, inspiring one to look deeper still.
41. As a result , most of the forest’s nutrients are locked up in the plants themselves, thus ______(allow) them to grow at an unbelievable speed.
42. It was organized by GreenHope, an organization ______ (devote) itself to protecting forest.
an organization是GreenHope的同位语,空处是非谓语动词,devote和organization逻辑上是主动关系,devote oneself to doing sth.
43. The crowd looked upwards, and saw, with unspeakable fear, a huge cloud ________ (shoot) from the top of the volcano.
44. No wonder the internet has now become the first place__________ the majority of people turn to for information.
【答案】that
45. Most of the songs are about hardship and heartbreak, but also about hope — with plenty of humour ______ (throw) in for good measure.

Trust
“Settle down!” Mr. Taylor was trying to calm the boys with a loud voice. The moment they entered the gym and saw the climbing walls towering over them, the boys got excited and started making noises.
Nervous as he was, he plucked up courage.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As Stevie loosened the grip, the rope slipped through his hand much faster than expected. Suddenly, Mr. Taylor dropped like a stone. Stevie let out a little scream. The picture of Mr. Taylor hitting the ground flashed over his mind. He quickly gripped the rope, bringing Mr. Taylor to a sudden stop. Regretful and cautious, Stevie looked up and saw Mr. Taylor wearing a smile and encouraging him with an inspiring gesture, which made him less nervous. Then he restarted loosening the grip slowly. Finally, Mr. Taylor dropped smoothly down to the bottom and signaled to Stevie with a thumb up. “You made it!”
Suddenly, the boys burst into wild applause and yelled encouragement at them. When Mr. Taylor stepped forward and gave Stevie a big hug, a ripple of excitement and pride ran through him. From that day on, Stevie opened his heart to the people around him. He made new friends at school. He even fell in love with climbing where he was regarded as a trustworthy teammate. Grateful to Mr. Taylor, he knew deep down in his heart that it was his teacher’s trust that allowed him to embrace his new self and others.

③拥抱:give sb a big hug/hug sb
