The man standing beside the boy in black is Mao Jiafeng. He is a Chinese teacher in a junior high school in the United Arab Emirates (UAE 阿联酋). He has been teaching Chinese there for four years.
Mao showed his interest in teaching Chinese to foreigners during his work in Egypt (埃及). Although he was good at working in the communications industry (通信行业), he realized that international Chinese education was his dream job. “Since I learned Arabic in the university and I have many friends in Arab countries, I can tell Chinese culture to the people in these countries,” said Mao.
Chinese was not easy for children in UAE. Many students in his class felt frustrated after having a few classes and some even wanted to give up. To make them become interested in learning Chinese, Mao played the videos of Chinese food and held some after-school activities at traditional Chinese festivals to introduce Chinese culture. He also encouraged them to read news about China in Chinese. “Some students hope to come to China to do business (生意), while others are very interested in Chinese technology and media,” said Mao. All these drove them to learn Chinese well.
Mao usually plays videos of Chinese kung fu in his class. To his surprise, these students are crazy about practising Chinese kung fu. They want to be as powerful as those kung fu stars. Some even buy wooden stakes (木桩) to practise Yongchun Boxing (咏春拳). Mao said that he would teach Chinese in UAE for another five years. “My dream is to make more people know the excellent Chinese culture and do my part for the world development,” said Mao.
19. Why did Mao Jiafeng go to teach Chinese in UAE?

Spider-Man (蜘蛛侠) is often thought of as one of the best superheroes (超级英雄) of all time. But did you know that he almost wasn’t created?
Stan Le came up with the idea for Spider-Man in 1962. He was different from what had come before. He was a high school student who had everyday problems like us. Back then, superheroes were strong grown men who saved people. Teenagers were helpers. The heroes didn’t have to worry about real-life problems like working for money and caring for an old family member. They flew in the sky and fought aliens (外星人). Stan Lee was about to change that.
When Stan told his boss (老板) about Spider-Man, his boss said it was “the worst idea” he’d ever heard, reported the Vintage News. For a time, it seemed like that was the end for Stan’s friendly neighborhood hero. But then, Stan had an idea. One of Marvel Comic (漫画) books was going to stop. According to Stan Lee, “Nobody cared what you put inside a book that was going to be killed.” So, Stan Lee teamed up with artist Steve Ditko, who made Spider-Man’s look. Together, they put Spider-Man onto the covers of the 15th and last issue(期) of the comic book Amazing Fantasy.
Spider-Man was a great success. The issue with the superhero on its cover sold quite well. And so, Spider-Man has his own comic book, The Amazing Spider-Man. He has become one of the most beloved fictional (虚构的) characters of all time. So, if you have an idea that you think is great, don’t give up!
22. Different from Spider-Man, superheroes before 1962 ________.
A. saved teenagers from dangers B. were adult men heroes
C. showed no love to their family members D. made money by working hard
23. The underlined words “Stan’s friendly neighborhood hero” refer to (指代) ________.
A. Stan Lee’s boss B. Spider-Man C. Stan Lee’s neighbor D. Steve Ditko
24. When Stan and Steve put Spider-Man onto the covers of Amazing Fantasy, ________.
A. they were sure of its success B. they were filled with sadness
C. they were actually taking a risk D. they were secretly killing the magazine
25. What is the writer’s main purpose (目的) in writing the passage?
A To tell stories about superheroes. B. To introduce the birth of Spider-Man.
C. To call on people to learn from superheroes. D. To compare past superheroes with modern ones.
D
Do you often fall asleep while listening to beautiful music at night? Or are you woken up by the singing of birds outside in the morning? Have you ever thought about why you can enjoy all of these things? That’s because of one important organ (器官)—the ear.
You may wonder: how do our ears work? The ear has three different parts: the outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear. The outer ear is the part you can see. It collects sound around you. The sound then travels down to the middle ear, the inner ear and then to your brain (大脑).
Your ears never stop working, even when you are asleep! Your ears continue hearing sounds, but your brain just ignores (忽略) them. That’s why you may sometimes wake up in the middle of the night—your brain heard something, but you don’t know what it was, since you were asleep.
But ears do more than hear. They help your balance (平衡), too. In the inner ear, there are organs that are filled with liquid (液体) and covered in small hairs. When you move your head, the liquid and hairs move, too. They send messages to your brain about where your head is.
More surprisingly, ears even help with tasting food. Of course, you don’t actually taste food with your ears. There are nerves (神经) running through the middle ear and those nerves join the tongue (舌) to the brain. If something wrong happens to your ears, it’s difficult for you to tell different tastes apart, according to the People’s Daily website.
The ears are truly important organs with many functions (功能). Everyone should make sure to protect their ears as well as they can.
26. In Paragraph 1, the writer leads into the topic “the ear” by ________.
A. telling stories B. asking questions C. giving examples D. sharing experiences
27. The outer ear ________.
A. wakes you up early B. helps you taste food quickly
C. sends messages to your brain D. brings different sounds together
28. If something wrong happens to your inner ears, you may ________.
A. not fall asleep B. not tell the taste of the food
C. fall down easily D. fail to hear any sound
29. How many functions of the ear are mentioned (提及) in the article?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.
30. What is the best title (标题) for this passage?
A. How Do Our Ears Work? B. How Do Our Ears Taste Food?
C. How Can We Protect Our Ears? D. How Do Our Ears Hear Sound?
