【原文】Across the UK, a group of volunteer motorcyclists are helping hospitals by delivering blood. Angela Brown is one of them. She is on call for 80 hours each month. At very short notice, she can be woken in the night and find herself riding a motorbike with a vital delivery for a hospital. But she’s not an employee of any hospital. She’s just a volunteer, one of the 1,400 advanced qualified riders of the Association of Blood Bikers. Last year, the Association’s bikers responded to around 35,000 rapid transport requests from 262 UK hospitals. Besides blood, the bikers also deliver surgical tools and medicine. Brown first discovered blood biking when she was on a course at the institute of advanced motorists. Her trainer was a blood biker. Under his influence, Brown started volunteering as a rider. She later discovered that blood bikers once helped her own nephew, Peter. He received blood delivered by a rider on New Year’s Eve, 2015. Brown says being a blood biker is a way of helping the community and being on the bike at the same time.

Kafka worked in an Italian insurance company for a year, during which period his letter witnessed that he was unhappy with his working time schedule, as it made it difficult for him to concentrate on his writing. On July 15, 1908, he resigned, and two weeks later he got employed by the Worker’s Accident Insurance Institute. Both in his letter and his diaries, Kalka frequently complained about his life at work.
He was promoted to the position of chief clerk at the Workers’ Accident Insurance Institute, and he worked from 8:30 am until 2:30 pm. Then he had lunch around 3:00 pm, slept until 7:30 pm, did some exercise and had a family dinner, after which he started work around 11:00 pm (the letter-and diary-writing took up several hours a day). “Depending on my strength, inclination and luck, until one, two, or three o’clock, once even till six in the morning.” This routine left him permanently on the verge of collapse. It would be wrong, however, to consider him a long-suffering official depressed by his work or even found it detestable. On the contrary, he was a model official, precise and efficient, who successfully climbed the career ladder.
Kafka is one of the highest regarded writers of the German language, although he achieved little to no fame during his own lifetime. During his lifetime, Franze Kafka burned an estimated 90 percent of his work. After his death at age 41, in 1924, a letter was discovered in his desk, addressed to his friend Max Brod. “Dearest Max,” it began. “My last request: Everything I leave behind me…in the way of diaries, manuscripts, letters (my own and others’), sketches and so on, to be burned unread.” Less than two months later, Brod, disregarding Kafka’s request, signed an agreement to prepare a posthumous edition of Kafka’s unpublished novels. Thanks largely to Brod’s efforts, Kafka’s slim, mysterious works were gradually recognized as one of the great monument s of 20th century literature.
24. Why did Kafka quit the job on July 15, 1908?
A. Because he found a better job. B. Because he found it affected his writing.
C. Because he had to work ten hours a day. D. Because he needed money to support his family.
25. What can we learn about Kafka?
A. He did poorly in his work. B. He got all of his works published.
C. He was famous when he was alive. D. He had a preference for writing.
26. What contributed to Kafka’s fame according to the last paragraph?
A. His friend’s efforts. B. His experience. C. His diligence. D. His luck.
27. In which column of the newspaper can you read the passage?
A. Geography. B. Health. C. Literature. D. Sports.
【答案】24. B 25. D 26. A 27. C

UNESCO has added Italian opera singing, along with more than 50 other practices from around the world, to its list of Intangible (无形的) Cultural Heritage. The agency created the list in 2008 to help safeguard traditions, festivals, rites of passage, art forms and other practices across the globe. It also recognizes culturally and historically significant buildings, structures and properties with its well-known list of World Heritage Sites. It originates from the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2023.
With UNESCO’s decision, opera singing joins several other Italian traditions on the list, like pizza making. “Performed by people of all genders, Italian opera singing is associated with specific facial expressions and body gestures and involves a combination of music, drama, acting and staging,” writes UNESCO.
The practice dates back to the Medici family in Florence in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Jacopo Peri’s Dafne, which was performed for the Medicis in 1598, is considered the first Italian opera. “This is a confirmation of what we’ve already known: Opera singing is a world excellence,” says Gennaro Sangiuliano, Italy’s culture minister, in a statement.
A wide variety of cultural practices, food dishes and festivals also made the list at UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage meeting in Botswana. The committee narrowed down nominations submitted by 72 nations, ultimately selecting 55 to add to the list. The full list now includes 730 practices from 145 countries. Six of the new additions are “in need of urgent safeguarding”, according to UNESCO. These include Syrian glassblowing, olive cultivation in Türkiye and a traditional Malaysian performance called Mek Mulung. The non-urgent additions include several annual events, such as the Rotterdam Summer Carnival in the Netherlands, the Sango Festival of Oyo in Nigeria, the Junkanoo in the Bahamas and the Shuwalid festival in Ethiopia.
28. Why was Italian opera singing added to the UNESCO’s list?
A. To prove its perfection. B. To preserve this art form.
C. To strengthen its competitiveness. D. To celebrate this art’s 20th anniversary.
29. What does UNESCO mention about Italian opera singing in paragraph 2?
A. Its features. B. Its prospects. C. Its origin. D. Its cost.
30. What can we infer about Italian opera singing from Gennaro Sangiuliano’s words?
A. It has a long history. B. It awaits confirmation.
C. It has received high recognition. D. It comes from a well-known performance.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. The Art Forms in Italy
B. The Introduction to UNESCO
C. 730 Practices Are Ready to Be Added to the UNESCO’s List
D. The UNESCO’s List Welcomes Italian Opera Singing & Other Practices
【答案】28. B 29. A 30. C 31. D

Using CRISPR genome (基因组) editing on a few common crops, a team of plant and soil scientists seeks to greatly increase and speed up carbon storage to help fight climate change.
To prevent dangerous levels of global warming, scientists say it won’t be enough to just stop burning fossil fuels that release carbon into the air. Because it’s nearly impossible for humanity to do that as fast as is now required, we will also need to pull carbon out of the air and se cure it.
Plants are among the best tools we have to do this, since these living solar collectors already capture billions of tons of carbon dioxide each year from the atmosphere through photosynthesis (光合作用). About half of that carbon winds up in roots and eventually the soil, where it can stay for hundreds to thousands of years.
But what if we could create plants and soils that are better at capturing carbon? With CRISPR genome editing — a new molecular (分子的) biology tool that allows scientists to make edits to the DNA code that underpins all life — that might be possible.
Last month, the Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI), a research team founded by CRISPR pioneer Jennifer Doudna, began to explore the idea. With an $ 11-million donation from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, a team of researchers made a three-year effort using CRISPR to create new crop varieties that photosynthesize more efficiently and transport more carbon into the soil. Eventually, the researchers hope to create gene-edited rice and sorghum seeds that could — if planted around the globe—pull more than a billion extra tons of carbon out of the air annually.
It’s an ambitious goal, and the team is likely to face numerous challenges in the lab before its CO2-cleaning plants can be put in the ground. Additional social, policy, and ethical considerations will determine whether those crops are widely accepted by farmers. But the researchers believe their ambitious project is beneficial to cope with climate crisis.
32. What is the purpose of using CRISPR genome editing on crops?
A. To produce more carbon. B. To help fight climate change.
C. To increase the yield of African crops. D. To improve soil structure.
33. What does the underlined word “capture” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Release. B. Mix. C. Elect. D. Absorb.
34. What can be inferred from this text?
A. It is still unknown whether gene-edited crops will be accepted.
B. CO2-cleaning plants can be put in the ground now.
C. Researchers have successfully created gene-edited rice and sorghum seeds.
D. CRISPR genome editing will face so many challenges that it has no future.
35. What is the researchers’ attitude to the gene-edited crops?
A. Indifferent. B. Opposed. C. Hopeful. D. Negative.
【答案】32. B 33. D 34. A 35. C
根据第一段中“Using CRISPR genome (基因组) editing on a few common crops, a team of plant and soil scientists seeks to greatly increase and speed up carbon storage to help fight climate change.(一个由植物和土壤科学家组成的团队试图通过对几种常见作物进行CRISPR基因组编辑,大幅增加和加速碳储存,以帮助应对气候变化。)”可知,在作物上使用CRISPR基因组编辑的目的是帮助应对气候变化。故选B。
【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词前面的主语“these living solar collectors(这些活的太阳能收集器)”以及后面的内容“…billions of tons of carbon dioxide each year from the atmosphere through photosynthesis(…每年通过光合作用从大气中吸收数十亿吨的二氧化碳)”可知,此处表示这些活的太阳能收集器即植物每年通过光合作用吸收了数十亿吨的二氧化碳,因此划线词capture的意思是“吸收”,和D选项意思相近,故选D。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中“Eventually, the researchers hope to create gene-edited rice and sorghum seeds that could—if planted around the globe—pull more than a billion extra tons of carbon out of the air annually.(最终,研究人员希望创造出基因编辑的水稻和高粱种子,如果在全球范围内种植,每年可以从空气中吸收超过10亿吨的碳。)”以及最后一段中“Additional social, policy, and ethical considerations will determine whether those crops are widely accepted by farmers.(额外的社会、政策和伦理考虑将决定这些作物是否被农民广泛接受。)”可知,目前尚不清楚基因编辑作物是否会被接受。故选A。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“But the researchers believe their ambitious project is beneficial to cope with climate crisis.(但研究人员认为,他们雄心勃勃的项目有利于应对气候危机。)”可知,研究人员对基因编辑作物的态度是充满希望的。故选C。

Kafka is one of the highest regarded writers of the German language although he achieved little to no fame during his own lifetime.
A. Geography. B. Health. C. Literature. D. Sports.

B. Opposed. C. Hopeful. D. Negative.
