I knew I would not see an actual person named Ellie’s at Ellie’s Eatery because, like most new restaurants these days, Ellie’s is a robo-restaurant.
When I walked in, a cute little manager robot appeared, looking rather like a toaster with lively blue eyes. It showed me to a nice table in the back. The menu monitor popped out of my table and showed me pictures of my dining options. I tapped my choices and clicked OK, and the screen slid back down.
I watched as full plates rode the conveyer belts that moved along each aisle (过道) of tables. In just a few minutes, my appetizer stopped at my table, and I took it from the belt. Later, I placed my empty plate back on the conveyer belt, and it was taken away into the kitchen to be cleaned.
I watched the little toaster showing customers to tables while I ate my main course. The food was tasty, but I was starting to feel annoyed because dealing with robots always makes me feel inhuman. Pretty soon, I wanted to talk to someone real, even if it was just a few sentences.
So when my dessert arrived, I took action. I dropped my plate on the floor with a satisfying crash. I was so happy when I saw the manager toaster’s shining red eyes — at last, a real live person would arrive!
But instead, a crew of two robots quickly appeared. A robot broom rushed over and started to sweep the piece of the broken plate into a robot garbage can. They finished and moved back into the kitchen. My plan to get a little reality into Ellie’s Eatery failed sadly. I hope the restaurant trend ends soon. I want to deal with people again!
4. What happened right after the author finished the first dish?
A. Two robots cleaned up the dish.
B. The manager robot’s eyes blinked red.
C. The robot manager showed the main course.
D. The empty plate was sent back to the kitchen by the belt.
5. Why did the author break a plate?
A To try to get human service.
B. To attract attention from the robots.
C. To show that the food did not taste good.
D. To put an end to the robo-restaurant trend.
6. How did the author feel at the end of the story?
A. Hopeful. B. Guilty. C. Shocked. D. Disappointed.
7. Where is the text most likely from?
A. Science fiction. B. Children’s literature.
C. A restaurant review. D. A science report.

Imagine if it were easy for everyone to get to the seashore, to smell the sea winds and to feel seawater on their skin. Wouldn’t it be great if people with walking difficulty could also get closer to the ocean to enjoy the thrill of a sunset, watching the sun’s rays light up the waves? The good news is that things are moving in the right direction!
In a CDC study, around 14% of adults in the US report a mobility disability, defined as serious difficulty walking or climbing stairs. This can make vacation planning a challenge and put some destinations off-limits. But technology companies like Mobi-mat are making a day at the beach for people with limited mobility a reality.
Mobi-mat has developed some exciting innovations like non-slip roll-out accessibility mats(垫子). These function like red carpets at movie premieres(首映), taking people with special needs right to the seashore. They are made of a fine nylon material that is designed for people who use wheelchairs or may otherwise need a firmer surface to cross the sand.
More cities are working to make enjoyment of the beach much more wide-ranging in other creative ways based on regional conditions. The town of Jupiter in Florida has opened up access to its beaches to people who have trouble going up and down stairs via three new wide wooden walkovers. The Miami Herald recently reported on the upcoming construction of a wheelchair-accessible beachfront observation platform, and upgraded park with adaptive playground and exercise equipment for people with disabilities in Miami Beach.
Inspired by creative innovation, forward-looking policymakers and companies, and the shared demands of disabled people who are calling for better access to beautiful beach locations, it seems that many more people of all abilities will be able to head to the beach.
8. What is the good news mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. The seashore becomes the hottest destination.
B. The ocean environment changes for the better.
C. Beaches are more accessible to the disabled.
D. Approaching the sea benefits disabled people.
9. What can we learn about the mat from Mobi-mat?
A. It offers a firm surface. B. It originates from movies.
C. It replaces wheelchairs. D. It functions beneath the sand.
10. What can be inferred about the measures in Jupiter and Miami?
A. They’re well behind schedule.
B. They center on ocean protection.
C. They need to be more creative.
D They’re tailored to local conditions.
11. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To introduce a friendly move.
B. To recommend a treatment.
C. To advertise beautiful beaches.
D To report findings of a study.
D
Sea life near Turkey is being threatened by a layer of brown foam on the ocean s surface.
The actual name for the foam is mucilage (黏液). Scientists first noticed and described mucilage in 2007, when it was found near Turkey. Then, it was also found in other parts of the Aegean Sea, near Greece.
This year’s outbreak of mucilage is the worst ever recorded. It’s been developing for seven months and is now covering large parts of the Sea of Marmara. The Sea of Marmara is an “inland sea”, surrounded by land belonging to Turkey, and connected to the Aegean Sea and the Black Sea.
There are many different kinds of algae (海藻), and it’s natural and normal for algae to grow in the ocean or in other bodies of water. But when there is lots of food for the algae, and other conditions are just right, there can be “an algae bloom” which results in algae growing quickly and in huge numbers And in very bad situations, mucilage is the result.
There are two main causes for the present outbreak of mucilage. One is the heavy pollution sewage, fertilizers, and other chemicals- flowing into the Sea of Marmara. The second cause is higher water temperatures because of climate change.
The mucilage causes problems in lots of different ways. For one thing, by covering the ocean’s surface, it stops sunlight from reaching all the sea life below. “This mucilage is now covering the sea surface like a tent canvas,” says Muharrem Balci, who teaches biology at Istanbul University. Because there is so much algae, it takes up lots of oxygen from the seawater. That means that there’s very little oxygen left for the other sea creatures that depend on it. The BBC reports that divers in the area are seeing large numbers of dying fish. After a while, the mucilage falls to the bottom of the ocean, where it covers the sea floor threatening to poison creatures that live there, like crabs and mussels. This year, the mucilage has been found as deep as 30 meters below the surface.
12. What do we know about mucilage?
A. It generally doesn’t last long.
B. It had never existed before 2007.
C. It is mainly formed in inland seas.
D. It was first noticed near Turkey.
13. What does the underlined part “an algae bloom” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. A good harvest of algae. B. The increasing use of algae.
C. The explosive growth of algae. D. A continuing popularity of algae.
14. What can be inferred about mucilage from the last paragraph?
A. It can greatly threaten sea life.
B. It has drawn attention worldwide.
C. It will lead to food shortages for humans.
D. It benefits some sea creatures but harms others.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. New kinds of algae are found in Turkey
B. Turkey’s coastal waters are covered with mucilage
C. Marmara has seen an increase in water temperatures
D. Endangered sea creatures in Marmara have been protected

What my father wore embarrassed me! I wanted him to dress like a doctor or lawyer, but he always dressed like my father, getting up before dawn every day to make breakfast for my mother and me.
We lived in South Texas, where my father worked as a repairman. He often wore a pair of jeans and a shirt, keeping his pencils, glasses and wrenches (扳手) in his breast pocket. His boots were those with steel toes that made them difficult to pull off his feet, which I sometimes helped him with when he returned from repairing cars — his job that also shamed me.
I blamed the way he dressed. I felt that my classmates laughed at me because they’d seen him mowing lawns (修剪草坪) in cut-off jeans and black boots. My classmates’ families paid men to beautify their lawns, while their fathers travelled in the bay wearing lemon-yellow sweaters and expensive shoes.
He preferred clothes that allowed him the freedom to move under cars. So even when taking part in a school trip with me, he was dressed in his repairman’s suit. On the school bus to the campsite, all students on the bus happily chatted with their parents except me, who lowered the head, avoiding spotting my classmates’ mocking glance (讥笑的眼光) or hearing their jokes, which I thought was about nothing else but what my father wore.
I regretted telling my parents the school trip, and I was very angry why my mother had no spare time while my father happened to have a vacation. But my father failed to read my mind. He was very happy, whistling a tune along the way.
Though my father didn’t sense my bad mood the school bus seemed as sad as I was. It drove more and more slowly and finally it stopped on the roadside. The driver got out to check the bus but found nothing wrong. Students and parents on the bus began to whisper about what was happening, worried that the delay might spoil the journey.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150 左右;
When others were complaining, my father stood up.

5. Why did the author break a plate?
A. To try to get human service.
B. To attract attention from the robots.
C. To show that the food did not taste good.
D. To put an end to the robo-restaurant trend.
6. How did the author feel at the end of the story?
A. Hopeful. B. Guilty. C. Shocked. D. Disappointed.

D. They’re tailored to local conditions.
11. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To introduce a friendly move.

A New kinds of algae are found in Turkey
B. Turkey’s coastal waters are covered with mucilage
C. Marmara has seen an increase in water temperatures
D. Endangered sea creatures in Marmara have been protected
D 13. C 14. A 15. B

(The explosive growth of algae.)。
根据最后一段第一二句“The mucilage causes problems in lots of different ways. For one thing, by covering the ocean’s surface, it stops sunlight from reaching all the sea life below.(黏液在很多方面都造成了问题。首先,它覆盖了海洋表面,阻止阳光照射到下面所有的海洋生物。)”以及 第二句“That means that there’s very little oxygen left for the other sea creatures that depend on it.(这意味着其他依赖氧气生存的海洋生物所剩的氧气非常少。)” (It can greatly threaten sea life.)。故选A项。
根据文章第一句“Sea life near Turkey is being threatened by a layer of brown foam on the ocean s surface.(土耳其附近的海洋生物正受到海面上一层棕色泡沫的威胁。)” Turkey’s coastal waters are covered with mucilage(土耳其的沿海水域覆盖着粘液)作为标题最合适。

如第2小题,选项G中“It has brought us a better understanding of …”与上一句中的“It has given us a deeper knowledge of…” Scientific research in physics and biology,可以帮助确定选项。

Though my father didn’t sense my bad mood, the school bus seemed as sad as I was. It drove more and more slowly and finally it stopped on the roadside. The driver got out to check the bus but found nothing wrong. Students and parents on the bus began to whisper about what was happening, worried that the delay might spoil the journey.

1.续写词数应为150 左右;

The school bus restarted and everyone cheered.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When others were complaining, my father stood up. Dressed in his repairman’s suit, he had jumped off the school bus without hesitation before I could stop him. “Another chance to be laughed at.” I thought to myself. He examined the bus carefully, using his pencils, glasses and wrenches (扳手) in his breast pocket. It was quite a long time before he was back on the bus again, his hands smeared with oil but a broad smile on his face. He told the driver that there was something was wrong with the engine, but now it was ok.
The school bus restarted and everyone cheered. All the parents thumbed up to show their appreciation and those who once mocked me even smiled at me with admiration. I hugged my father tightly for a minute. Only then did I feel proud though he still wore those plain clothes. I finally understood one can’t be judged by what he or she wears. I no longer envy others having a father dressed smartly. I love my father, who teaches the profound truth: It is one’s character, not what one wears that really matters.
