Many years ago, my mother read from the book Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey to me. I remember as if it were yesterday, hearing her voice at my side on a cold wintry night. My mother’s voice changed my world.
Long before I could read on my own, she shared with me the strength and beauty of McCloskey’s language in a story of a little girl and her mother out in nature, co-existing with a mother bear and its baby. The power of the story, of language and of my mother all came together. And it happened many times after that, over and over. The read aloud made me a reader.
Years later, I was reading aloud a picture book to a small child in a classroom. His life, so far, had not been easy. His childhood was troubled by poverty and loneliness. In that moment, in the joy of the read aloud, he had an idea that started something big.
What he said was this: “Mrs. Allyn, let’s make sure everyone knows how good this feels. Let’s have a holiday for the read aloud.” Therefore, my organization, LitWorld, created a grassroots movement World Read Aloud Day in 2010 to honor this young boy’s wish for everyone to be able to have a read aloud every day.
Since the day he shared that good idea with us, World Read Aloud Day has become a worldwide event, reaching over one million people in more than 65 countries around the world. This year we are over 600 cities strong, a number that is growing every day.
Children who grow up as readers become engaged citizens of the global world, and every child deserves the right to read. When I say that reading aloud will change the world, I know it sounds simple. C
A friend of mine, in response to a conversation we were having about the injustices of life, asked me the question, “Who said life was going to be fair, or that it was even meant to be fair?” Her question was a good one. It reminded me of something I was taught as a youngster: life isn’t fair. It’s a disappointment, but it’s absolutely true. One of the mistakes many of us make is that we feel sorry for ourselves, or for others, thinking that life should be fair, or that someday it will be. It’s not and it won’t be.
One of the nice things about surrendering (屈从) to the fact that life isn’t fair is that it keeps us from feeling sorry for ourselves by encouraging us to do the very best we can with what we have. We know it’s not “life’s job” to make everything perfect, it’s our own challenge. Surrendering to this fact also keeps us from feeling sorry for others because we are reminded that everyone is dealt differently; everyone has unique strengths and problems in the process of growing up, facing the reality and making decisions; and everyone has those times that they feel unfairly treated.
The fact that life isn’t fair doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do everything in our power to improve our own lives or the world as a whole. To the contrary, it suggests that we should. When we don’t recognize or admit that life isn’t fair, we tend to feel pity for others and for ourselves. Pity, of course, is a self-defeating emotion that does nothing for anyone, except to make everyone feel worse than they already do. When we do recognize that life isn’t fair, however, we feel enthusiastic for others and for ourselves. And enthusiasm is a heartfelt emotion that conveys loving-kindness to everyone it touches.
The next time you find yourself thinking about the injustices of the world, try reminding yourself of this very basic fact. You may be surprised that it can make you out of self-pity and into helpful action.
46. The author thought of his friend’s question as a good one because ________.
A. he also wanted to know who held such an opinion B. it made him recall something during his childhood
C. like his friend, he also thought life was unfair D. he learned something from the question as a youngster
47. Surrendering to the fact that life isn’t fair will ________.
A. keep us from making everything perfect B. keep us from doing everything in our power
C. make us face unfair treatment bravely D. make us know it’s our duty to perfect things
48. The second paragraph of the passage mainly tells us that ________.
A. it’s nice to accept the injustice of life B. it’s nice to surrender to the life
C. we should not surrender to the life D. we should not feel sorry for everything
49. In the last paragraph, “this very basic fact” refers to the fact that ________.
A. you should not pity for others B. life isn’t and won’t be fair
C. compassion is heartfelt emotion D. pity is a self-defeating emotion

“I like to see people of all races, the Chinese, the Malays and the Indians, especially little children, enjoying themselves in the park. I don’t know how long I will do this as I grow old. As long as I can do what I like, I’d like to continue.” This is what Mr Lee told a news reporter when he was asked about volunteering to keep the park a clean place.
Lee Kim Siew is an 84-year-old retiree who has devoted five years of his life to cleaning up the park near his house. He works three hours every day with a plastic bag in his hand, walking back and forth around the large park. He stops every time he spots rubbish, picking it up and putting it into the plastic bag. Mr Lee is a familiar sight to those who visit the park regularly. They give a smile to the old gentleman and sometimes have a brief chat with him before leaving there.
“When I first came here, I was shocked to find rubbish was thrown everywhere. It was so smelly,” explains Mr Lee. Cigarette ends, bottles and wrappers are what he always finds. At times, he even. digs a drain(下水道)with his hands to allow the water to flow from the pathways. Other times, he devotedly picks up the fallen branches and dried leaves to ensure the park is entirely clean.
It seems that his old age doesn’t deter him from doing the cleaning, although Mr Lee says his age affects his movement When he first started doing the cleaning, he came to the park six times every week. Now he only does that four to five times weekly.
The old man has also donated (捐赠)more than 67,00 used books to schools in local and neighboring regions. He hopes that his efforts can help people change their bad habit of throwing things carelessly.

根据第一段““I like to see people of all races, the Chinese, the Malays and the Indians, especially little children, enjoying themselves in the park. I don’t know how long I will do this as I grow old. As long as I can do what I like, I’d like to continue.”(我喜欢看到各个种族的人,华人、马来人和印度人,尤其是小孩子,在公园玩得很开心。我不知道我老了还能做这件事情多久。只要我能做自己喜欢的事情,我就愿意继续下去。)”可知,李金肖在公园做志愿者是因为他希望看到不同的玩得开心的人们。故答案为Because he likes to see different people enjoying themselves。
根据第二段“They give a smile to the old gentleman and sometimes have a brief chat with him before leaving there.(他们会对这位老人微笑,有时还会在离开之前和他简短地聊一聊。)” They smile at or chat with him。
根据第三段““When I first came here, I was shocked to find rubbish was thrown everywhere. It was so smelly,” explains Mr Lee. Cigarette ends, bottles and wrappers are what he always finds.(当我第一次来到这里的时候,我很惊讶地发现到处都是垃圾,太臭了。” 故答案为Dirty and smelly。
根据第四段划线单词的后半句“although Mr. Lee says his age affects his movement When he first started doing the cleaning, he came to the park six times every week. Now he only does that four to five times weekly.(虽然李先生说他的年龄影响了他的行动当他刚开始做清洁工作时,他每周来公园六次。现在他只能每周来四到五次。)可知,虽然李先生去公园的次数减少了,但是他能继续坚持他的工作,说明他的年龄并不能阻止他做清洁工作,推断出划线单词deter意为“阻止”。故答案为Prevent。
【55题详解】
考查开放性试题。根据第二段“Lee Kim Siew is an 84-year-old retiree who has devoted five years of his life to cleaning up the park near his house. He works three hours every day with a plastic bag in his hand, walking back and forth around the large park. He stops every time he spots rubbish, picking it up and putting it into the plastic bag. (李金肖是一名84岁的用他人生中五年的时间致力于清理他家附近的公园的退休人员。他手里拿着塑料袋在公园里来回走,每天工作三个小时。每次他看到有垃圾的时候都会停下,捡起垃圾并把它放到垃圾袋里。)及第五段“The old man has also donated (捐赠)more than 67,00 used books to schools in local and neighboring regions.(这位老人已经捐献了六千七百多本使用过的图书给当地的学校和附近的区域。)”通过文章的介绍,我认为李先生是一位勤劳和无私的老人。我觉得正是因为老人的勤劳和无私的行为给那些污染环境的人们树立了榜样。故答案为He is selfless and hardworking because what he has done set a good example to those polluting the environment。

Years later I was reading aloud a picture book to a small child in a classroom.
But one of the many great things about giving kids access to the power of stories and sharing them together is that it is simple. It is also cheap and easily done. And the impact is huge.
