Unit 5 Amazing things
游客太空之旅
On August 10, 2023, the world’s first mother-and-daughter team
flew to the edge(边缘) of space on board Virgin Galactic’s first flight for
travellers.
The mission(任务), called Galactic-02, took off from Spaceport
America in the US state of New Mexico. Keisha Schahaff and her daughter
Anastatia Mayers, from Antigua, got their tickets(票) for the trip in a
competition(竞赛). The other visitor was an 80-year-old British man
called Jon Goodwin. He bought his ticket many years ago for $250,000.
The travellers travelled with two astronauts and the driver on a space
plane called VSS Unity. The space plane was first carried(运载) by a
bigger plane, VMS Eve, up to a height of 15,000 metres. The two then
stayed away from each other, and VSS Unity made its way to the edge of
space. When they were around 85,000 metres high, the travellers took off
their seat belts(安全带) and enjoyed weightlessness. They floated(漂
浮) around the space place and looked out of the windows at Earth. VSS
Unity went back at Spaceport America about an hour after taking off.
After the flight, Schahaff said, “It is the best ride ever. This trip has
given me this beautiful feeling that if I can do this, I can do anything.”
Mayers said she was fond of stars. Goodwin said, “The most surprising
thing is looking at Earth from space—the real clarity(清晰) is very
great.”

A strong, reusable paper bag
Standard paper bags are easily torn or damaged by moisture, so they’re
often used only once. To address that, scientists have created a strong paper
bag that can be reused many times before being turned into fuel.
To make the bag, a team at Pennsylvania State University in
Pennsylvania heated paper with a special process, which made it stronger,
even when it was wet. To turn the bag into a biofuel(fuel made from
renewable materials that won’t run out) at the end of its life, they broke it
down by applying a special chemical.

Volcano access closed after eruption
Authorities in Iceland closed access to Mount Fagradalsfjall, a popular
tourist attraction, after the volcano began erupting on July 10, 2023,
following earthquakes in the area. The volcano has spewed high levels of
toxic gases. Lava (hot liquid rock) also flowed down the mountain,
which is about 25 miles from Iceland’s capital city, Reykjavik. Tourists
have been encouraged to steer clear of the area until conditions are further
evaluated.
Unit 7 Abilities
家庭野餐
“We’re going to wait,” my brother says. “The weather app on my
phone says the rain is going to stop in twenty minutes.”
The weather app is really right. The rain stops and the sun comes out in
the sky. We go back to our picnic spot(野餐地点) and wait for everyone
else to arrive.
There are cousins, sisters, nephews and little children. My mother,
aged ninety-seven, sits in a large picnic chair. There are 33 of us here this
year—a lot less than usual. Still, it’s good to catch up with everyone and
watch little Rex talking with his new cousin, Mac.
Next year we’ll meet at Ham Hill Country Park like this on the second
Sunday in the month for 30 years. Some family members are no longer with
us, but there are new ones to take their place. Life goes on.
It was my cousin Olivia’s idea to hold a picnic every year. It’s such a
good thing to do. The secret is keeping it simple by bringing our own food
and something to sit on, and always ▲ on the same date.
As the sun dries the wet grass, we eat and chat until it’s six o’clock and
time to head for those Dorset hills. However, I’ll always remember the
day!

Unit 8 Pets
有职业的猫
George’s new job is very important as too many rats in stables(马厩)
spread disease(传播疾病) and they do harm to horse food. He makes
keeping horses cost less money.
The idea is that a cat can eat rats, but even just by having George on
site, the smell and a cat’s coming out are enough to drive rats away.
It certainly sounds as if George is happy. George is fed in the mornings
and evenings, but he can still catch rats, for catching rats is a cat’s
instinct.
He spends the rest of the day walking around the stables, following
Caroline and playing with a neighbourhood cat called Blue.
George has his own cat room. There are different beds and quilts in it,
and there’s a special cat flap(猫洞) that opens just for him.
“ A He’ll happily play on the bales of hay(大捆大捆的干草) in
the stables,” Chrissie says. B “George will watch the world go
by. C ”
What is perhaps even more important is that George is now comfortably
sitting beside Caroline and cosying up to(讨好) her. D
George . He can sit on Caroline’s upper legs. The freedom he
gets from being a working cat means he is no longer bored and has the perfect
feeling of being loved.
Caroline and her family love him very much and can’t imagine their
stables without him.

Vertical farm grows greens in California
A high-tech indoor farm for growing fresh produce has opened in the
city of Compton, California. Created by a company called Plenty, it is a
vertical farm with crops and plants growing on towers nearly two stories
high. The farm is expected to produce 4.5 million pounds of greens yearly.
Vertical farms have been shown to produce up to 350 times more food per
acre than traditional farms, using much less land and water.
Plenty can control the amount of light and water, which decreases the
cost of growing the crops. This makes healthy, locally grown produce more
affordable and available to people in the area.
