I had been working for a company in Australia for more than ten years. I had just found a better job and I knew that the manager would be disappointed when I was leaving. I recently became friends with a young man who had just migrated to Australia to escape war in his homeland. He was unskilled and was finding life difficult as he was unemployed.
The manager asked me to introduce someone who I thought could do the job just as well as me, so I took this opportunity to arrange an interview for my new friend. However, in the end, he was not offered the job after the interview.
Later, I asked the manager why my friend was turned down. The manager thought that his English was not good enough for the position, but I suggested that my friend will be a good choice for the company since I could train him. I believed that once given the time to learn, he could do the job. After a week’s training, he was employed and was happy with his position.
I knew how the terrible war had forced him to leave his homeland and what price he had paid for doing so. I appreciate being able to live in Australia and believe that this appreciation is best proved by offering acts of kindness to people in need of help. The smile of appreciation from this man continues to impel me to give, which is a very happy and enjoyable process, during which I also receive some unexpected things, such as help, prize, flowers, love and so on.
1.What’s the reason of the young man’s coming to Australia? (no more than 5 words)
2.Why was the young man initially turned down for the job? (no more than 10 words)

Computers, smartphones, and audio players are an essential part of students’ everyday lives. That means that whenever students are doing homework, they are going to be faced with the problem of using their devices for purposes other than learning. Instead of concentrating on one task, they are performing multiple tasks.
According to the research by Larry Rosen, published in the journal Computers in Human Science, students spend up to 45% of their homework time on various tasks unrelated to their studies. Students often get distracted by their phones or use their laptops for unauthorized activities. Often, students think that they are able to multitask effectively, without sacrificing their studies. However, the research shows that it is true in only 5% of all cases.
But why do teenagers multitask? The answer is simple: multitasking makes us feel good. As the research indicates, the entertainment gained from secondary activities during studies makes learners feel better emotionally.
Watching TV or talking to your friends by email is pleasant and helps students fight boredom while doing homework or listening to a lecture they find boring. Another reason why students multitask is that they simply do not see the negative impact it has on their coursework. Teenagers often overrate their abilities. The seemingly tiny distractions, however, result in a constant need to switch focus and sort out information, injuring the brain by overuse and making the process inefficient.
However, the effects of multitasking are not entirely negative. The research conducted by HKU indicates that people who routinely multitask are able to use their senses in conjunction more easily. Other research also shows that multitasking has a positive effect on the ability to pass judgment and solve problems quickly and efficiently.
6.What does the research by Larry Rosen tell us? (No more than 12 words)
7.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “unauthorized” in Paragraph 2? (No more than 3 words)
8.According to the text, why do teenagers multitask? (No more than 12 words)
9.Why are the effects of multitasking not entirely negative? (No more than 12 words)
10.Will you choose to multitask when doing homework? Why or why not? (No more than 25 words)

A woman in Lakewood, Washington, wanted to find a boy who left $5 and a heartbreaking apology note on her doorstep. On Friday, Marie found this note from “Jake”:
“I am sorry that I took your butterfly wind chimes (风铃) without your permission. My mom died and she liked butterflies so I took them to put by our window. Now I feel terrible for my past behavior. I am sorry. This is the only money I have. Please do not be mad at me.”
Marie told KCPQ she was not mad and wanted to find Jake to return his $5. “I wanted to cry because apparently he felt bad for what he had done. And I think he might be scared,” she told the station. Marie said she knows stealing is immoral, but she is sympathetic to the child. “I’m not agreeing with the stealing act but he did try to make up for what he had done. I lost my mom at a young age so I really make sense of his feeling and know how hard it is,” she said.
Marie wanted to find Jake, not to punish him, but to return his money for his honesty. Marie moved to the neighborhood two months ago and didn’t know many people there, which made tracking down Jake difficult.
In order to find the boy, she took to Facebook. Almost a week later, her Facebook post got much attention from social media, but she still didn’t hear from the boy. Marie said she wanted Jake to know that she had no intention of embarrassing or scaring him by asking him to reveal himself. She also said she was willing to help Jake with his schooling if she could find him.

I’ve been writing now for 34 years. It all started when I was just 18 years. As a boy growing up, I probably read hundreds of books. I read mysteries, science fiction, thrillers, and just about any other type of book I could find. I had a thirst for knowledge that never seemed to disappear, no matter how many books I read over the years.
Then suddenly, I found that I too had ideas of my own that I wanted to write and share. I wanted to share things that were full of goodness love, joy, and happiness. I tried to ignore my desire at first, but as any writer will tell you, once ideas awaken inside of you, they don’t leave you alone until you write them down. I didn’t have a computer, or even a typewriter, but I grabbed a pen and a notebook and wrote down everything that was burning inside of me.
When I was finally done, I didn’t know how to share my work with the world. There was no internet back then, no smartphones, and no social media. However, I sought out(找到)the editor of my local newspaper and asked if he would like to print what I’d written He was a good man, full of both wisdom and kindness. He not only printed my first story but agreed to publish anything else I was willing to write.
After that, of course, nothing could stop me. I continued to write new articles each week, which were published in different local papers and later on the internet. Years later I even self-published two collections of my stories in book form.
Through my writing, I slowly became a better person. Writing allowed me to discover the goodness and light that exist in us all. I also found that we are all writers.whether we put pen to paper or not.
With every choice we make, with every thought we think, and with every action we take, we are writing our own life story.

Tina Leverton was 62 when she bought her first pair of ballet shoes. She said putting her feet into the soft leather was very emotional. She said: “I’ve waited a long time for it.”
A few days later, Leverton took her first ballet class after seeing an advertisement in a newspaper. It showed older women dancing in a class near Leverton’s house. “As I came in the door, I found a big smile on my face. From the minute I started, I felt like coming home.”
Leverton had longed to dance as a child. Sadly, her parents couldn’t afford ballet classes, for they were first-generation Indian immigrants, struggling to make a living in the UK. Her father was a train driver on the underground in London and her mother held two cleaning jobs. Nonetheless, she harboured her dream of being a ballerina (芭蕾舞女演员).
At her present age, a grand lie-lowering (俯卧撑) to the floor with bent knees-seemed to be out of the question. It took her three months to master the move: leaping and landing on one foot. “I love the struggle and the challenge of learning something new. People in their 60s have a lot of self-limiting beliefs: ‘I can’t do it,’ ‘I’m not good enough.’ And maybe they’re not good enough. But it doesn’t matter,” she said.
Ballet has been transformative. At a medical appointment a few months after Leverton’s first class, a nurse measured her at 163cm, half an inch taller than she had thought. She attributes (归因) the difference to improved posture. Her muscle tone has improved and her lower back pain has stopped. Dancing has also brought new friends. She met a group of older, more independent women and worked together towards a team award with the Royal Academy of Dance. And then, of course, there is the joyful feeling. “Ballet is all the therapy (治疗) I’ll ever need,” said Leverton.
21.How did Leverton feel after taking her dance lesson?(no more than 1word)
22.What’s the main idea of the third paragraph?(no more than 12 words)
23.What does the underlined word mean in paragraph 3?(no more than 8 words)
24.What did dancing bring to Leverton?(no more than 10 words)
25.What can you learn from Leverton’s story? And your reason.(no more than 25 words)

One kind of creative writing task is to write an ending for someone else’s story. What you write should match the original story so that it is believable. To finish a story, you should:
Fully understand the content of the original story. This is not just understanding the language used and the basic plot, but also the feelings and motivations of the characters.
Use your creative imagination. Sometimes your creative imagination can be activated (使激活) through brainstorming different ideas and then choosing the best one.
Keep the content consistent with the original story. You are not trying to write a new story; you are trying to write an ending for a story that already exists.
Keep the language consistent with the original story. Your story should match the tone (语气) and style of the original story.
Recycle some of the language from the original story, if you have trouble coming up with the right words to use.
Keep in mind that an ending should wrap up the story and bring it to a close. When working on an ending you should therefore think about what has happened to the main character and how that character has changed or grown because of the events in the story.
26.What is author’s purpose in writing the passage?(no more than 8 words)
27.Why do we need creative imagination when writing an ending?(no more than 10 words)
28.Why should we keep the content consistent with the original story?(no more than 18 words)
29.What does the underlined phrase in Paragraph 7 mean?(1 word)
30.What else do you think should be noted when writing an ending? Please give your reason(s).(no more than 20 words)
(23-24高二上·天津红桥·期末)As we enjoy the summer ocean waves along the beaches, we may think nervously about Steven Spielberg’s Jaws and the great fear that sharks inspire in us.
Yet we are happy to see global efforts to protect the declining number of sharks. The world has realized that we need the species, like sharks, to keep a balanced ecosystem. Sharks, in particular, are “in” these days. Thanks to good public policy and famous stars such as Jackie Chan and Ang Lee, killing sharks for fin soup is no longer cool.
The demand for shark fins has been rising for decades, threatening sharks with extinction (灭绝)—up to 100 million sharks are killed each year just for their fins. But we have started to reverse the trend, particularly in many areas of the United States and overseas where restaurants once proudly provided delicious shark fins on the menu.
In California, a ban on the sale and possession of shark fin soup has gone into effect this year through the efforts of Wild Aid and other organizations. Overseas marketing and public efforts featuring posters on public transportation systems and TV ads have been underway for the past few years. These efforts all show signs of success, on both the supply side and the demand side of trade in shark fins.
Actually, stopping the killing of sharks is part of a broader movement to stop the killing of wild animals and the buying and selling of wildlife products. These products come from hunting elephants, tigers and rhinos, besides killing marine life. Whether it is shark fin soup or ivory piano keys, killing animals is big business. The hunting of elephants in search of ivory tusks for luxury (奢侈的) goods has become a fall-scale war. The decrease of African elephant populations is alarming. Together with international partners, the United States is leading the worldwide effort to reduce demand for high-end products that rely on killing animals.

32.What’s the main reason for killing sharks? (No more than 10 Words)

Claire Wyatt, a 24-year-old British volunteer, led eight Cambodians living with disabilities on a 155-mile bike ride from Phnom Penh, the nation’s capital, to Siem Reap to raise money and deliver supplies to those in need amid the coronavirus pandemic (新冠病毒大流行).
“Leading this trip was an incredibly special experience for me,” said Claire. “Not only was I inspired by the determination of each and every rider, but also the team taught me every day not to focus on their disability.”
When she was first asked to lead the excursion, Claire admitted, she was feeling nervous about her team traveling such a distance in just a few days, because cycling with a disability can come with added physical and emotional challenges.
One team member named Dy, who lost an arm in a landmine (地雷) accident, biked using just one arm to balance. Another named Vulta could only pedal on one side due to paralysis from polio (脊髓灰质炎). Despite all the difficulties, Claire realized quickly that she didn’t have to worry about her team. She saw them deal with rough terrain (不平地形) that she had seen abled cyclists give up on before.
The volunteers covered the distance in just four days, not only helping so many people across the country, but also overcoming huge barriers (障碍) to get there.
“The best thing about this ride is that the riders have all volunteered their time to do this. They are so passionate about Cambodia and raising money for others in need,” said Claire. “The money raised will feed 99 families in Siem Reap.”
Claire recalled her favorite moment of the experience, when one of the cyclists pushed a shattered teammate up a hill for 2 miles. “One moment that stood out for me was when Naret, our only female rider, was feeling tired,” she said. “Her fellow rider gently put his hand on her back and pushed her for 2 miles! They were encouraging each other to push through the tiredness.”
36.Why did Claire and eight Cambodians cycle 155 miles? (no more than 15 words)
37.What worried Claire before the ride? (no more than 15 words)
38.What does the underlined word “shattered” probably mean in Paragraph 7? (1 word)

When I was in my second year in senior high school, I found a four-dollar-an-hour part-time job at Villanova Pizza. Like many of my friends, I longed to earn some pocket money from the job as well as gaining social experience. Just one week after I worked there, Stubby, the manager, called me into his office. As the saying goes, “life isn’t a bed of roses”. My first job ended in failure. His reason was that I showed up late twice and took more breaks than others. “Oh, I’m a loser,” I thought to myself. I believed that thought was shared by my brothers, neither of whom had ever been fired, and my mother, though she would never express it in those terms.
“I am too sad to do anything,” I complained to my father.
After listening to my words, he laughed.
“It’s not funny; I’m a loser,” I said.
“No, you’re not. This is a part of growing up. You will be all right, my dear daughter,” he said, patting my shoulder. “Trust me. You are good enough.”
I looked into my father’s eyes and I could see he really trusted me. And I believed him. Since then, “Trust me. You are good enough” are the only words I have repeated to myself. I have worked hard to be a better person and cherished every chance I have got.
Finally, I succeeded in entering a good university. After graduation I found my dream job. I couldn’t wait to call my father and show my gratitude.
Look ahead when you experience something unpleasant and there is always someone around believing in you. When they believe in us, we begin to believe in ourselves, too. They tell us we are good enough over and over until we can hear it.

Steve and Joanna have lived on the remote Bardsey Islanda major British nature reserve, since 2007. They moved there by responding to an advertisement looking for a family to run the island’s farm.
“ The children had loved holidays here and had no doubt about island life. But Steve and I wondered whether we could cope, being the only inhabitants in such a remote place, ” recalls Joanna “ But the role and place fitted us. ” The couple’s strong faith gives them a deep connection with the island.
Their life is demanding with just two of them managing the island’s farm, 30 cows and fragile ecosystems. Joanna also works for the RSPB Wildlife Charity and tries to grow enough vegetables to keep them self-sufficient. In general Joanna and Steve’s lives are a cycle of alternating solitude and interaction (孤独与互动的交替) “ In spring and summer the island becomes very busy with visitors, and I’m growing vegetables to sell and working in our café. By autumn I’m looking forward to winter. I long for some peace and privacy, and I love having time to be creative ” says Joanna.
Bardsey’s population doubled last Christmas when a second couple moved into the island — to look after the bird observatory “ We have each other round for meals and help each other out, ” says Joanna. “ It’s been lovely. Many people choose island life for similar reasons — whether it’s to escape the stress of big city life or its in search of new opportunities like starting a business. That tends to bring the community together. ”
“ I read somewhere that islands can either free you or become your prison ” Joanna concludes. “ We feel so privileged to live on Bardsey and be free to be who we are. I find myself more relaxed and less stressed living here. ”

We would all love to learn how to be happy. And sometimes, the solution comes from a surprising place.
During his fieldwork in a remote African village, an anthropologist (人类学家) had devoted himself to studying the unique habits and culture of the local tribe. He had been working in the village for quite some time and on the day before his scheduled return home, he composed a gift—a basket full of delightful fruits from the area, wrapped thoughtfully in a piece of cloth. He placed this offering beneath a tree and then gathered the village children around.
The man drew a line in the dirt, looked at the children, and said, “As soon as I signal to start, dash to the tree; the first to arrive will claim the basket of fruits.” However, when he signaled, instead of racing against each other, the children joined hands and ran together to the tree. Then They settled around the basket and enjoyed their treat as a group.
Bewildered by their act of unity, the anthropologist asked why they chose to run collectively when any one of them could have seized all the fruits. A young girl looked up at him and said innocently, “How can one of us be happy if all the other ones are sad?”
Years later, Desmond Tutu, the well -known South African activist, remembered how a girl once thought about things in a simple yet deep way. He used the word “ubuntu” to describe her thinking. “Ubuntu” means “I exist because we all do.” In other words, we are who we are because of our relationships with others. For that tribe, to be human is to relate with and through others. They think that our happiness comes from the union of our joys and the meaningful impact they have on the community.

“I never lied to my father. When I was young, my father told me that if I tried to lie to him, he would always know. My body would tell him the truth because the body’s movement never lies.”, said Martha Graham, an influential American dancer and teacher, fascinated with the ideal that “movement never lies”. Martha realized that the body is its own storyteller. She just wanted to find ways to tell those stories through dance.
She began by studying ballet, but soon realized that it wasn’t right to her. From the very beginning of her dancing career, Martha saw dance differently. She was tiny, not tall like ballerinas (芭蕾舞女演员) at that time. But she had a strong, powerful body and dark, soulful (热情的) eyes. So she developed a style of movement different from traditional romantic ballet and called it modern dance. She brought modern dance to a new level of popularity in American culture.
Unlike ballet, which took place in a fairylike world, Martha’s modern dance expressed real emotions. Martha believed that it was important that the audience see themselves within her dances. She created and arranged many dances that showed emotions such as anger, jealousy, love or hate of common people.
Martha loved to wear long, dark, flowing robes when she performed. In the dances she used her robes in many different ways. Martha’s most important prop (支撑物) was the floor. She always danced in her bare feet, and her feet worked hard to tell their stories. The technique catching on, she founded the Dance Repertory Theater, and later, the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance.
Martha Graham died in 1991, just short of 100 years old. During her life she never stopped dancing. A part of Martha Graham lives on in modern dancers everywhere who continue to study the “Graham technique”. They strive for her honesty, always remembering that movement never lies.
56.Why did Martha Graham never lied to her father when she was young?(no more than 12words)
57.What does the underlined word“ideal”mean in paragraph 1?(no more than 2 words)

Because your imagination can inspire different ideas.

(保持内容与原故事一致。你不是在写一个新故事;你正试图为一个已经存在的故事写一个结局)”可知,保持与原故事一致是因为我们不是在写一个新的故事,而是在为一个已经存在的故事写一个结局。故答案为:Because we're not writing a new story but an ending to a story that already exists.

She saw them deal with rough terrain (不平地形) that she had seen abled cyclists give up on before.(一位名叫Dy的队员在一次地雷事故中失去了一只手臂,他骑自行车时只用一只手臂来保持平衡。另一个叫Vulta的人因为小儿麻痹症而瘫痪,只能靠一边踩踏板。尽管困难重重,克莱尔很快意识到她不必担心她的团队。她看到他们在崎岖的地形上行走,而她以前曾见过有能力的自行车手放弃)”,第五段的“The volunteers covered the distance in just four days, not only helping so many people across the country, but also overcoming huge barriers (障碍) to get there.(志愿者们仅用了四天时间就完成了这段距离,不仅帮助了全国这么多的人,而且克服了巨大的障碍到达那里)”和第六段的““The best thing about this ride is that the riders have all volunteered their time to do this.
