When we think of paper, we think of newspapers and books. But there are many other uses. Only half of the world’s paper is used for books and newspapers.
Paper is very good for keeping you warm. You have perhaps seen homeless men asleep on a large number of newspapers. In Finland, it is sometimes -40℃ in winter. The farmers wear paper boots (靴子) in the snow. Nothing could be warmer.
Each year, more and more things are made of paper. We have had paper cups and plates for a long time. But now we hear that chairs, tables, and even beds can be made of paper. With paper boots and shoes, you can wear paper hats, paper dresses, and paper raincoats. When you have used them once, you throw them away and buy new ones.
The latest use of paper seems to be paper houses. These are not small houses for children to play in, but real, big houses for people to live in. You can buy a house with three rooms for about 500 dollars. You can put it up by yourself in a few hours, and you can use it for about five years.

David feels uncomfortable when he looks at the undone homework on his desk. He doesn’t finish his homework until the last minute, as a result of surfing the Internet.
People can procrastinate (拖延) on almost anything, even enjoyable things such as planning a vacation. Research has shown that the top things young people procrastinate are studying, going to bed and visiting their relatives. “The main reason for procrastination is that people are afraid of failure,” says professor Peter Stone.
Some people believe procrastination will make them work more effectively (有效地). But researchers disagree. “I did a study several years ago, asking procrastinators to finish a job in a certain period of time,” says Stone. “They did worse than non-procrastinators. They made more mistakes and they took longer.” Procrastination is usually not good for you. For example, bedtime procrastination can lead to sleeplessness, which in turn can cause many other health problems.
What can be done to stop procrastinating? The best advice is to do what you need to do as quickly as possible. If you want to develop a habit of exercise, just put on your walking shoes.
Next, find something to help you stop procrastinating. For example, if you want to go to bed at 10: 30 pm, you might set a timed dimmer switch (渐暗开关) at 10 pm. When the lights are darker, you’ll start going to bed. It works for most people.
Finally, reward (奖励) yourself every time you make progress. For example, after you’ve run 3 kilometers, enjoy your favorite ice-cream.
8. What does David do instead of finishing his homework as soon as possible?
A. He goes to bed and have a rest. B. He visits his relatives.
C. He writes a plan for a vacation. D. He surfs the Internet first.
9. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A. Procrastination is not good for people. B. The reasons for people’s procrastination.
C. The ways for people to avoid procrastination. D. Procrastination can make people work better.
10. How many suggestions are talked about to stop procrastinating?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.
11. What should David do if he wants to stop procrastinating on homework?
A. Enjoy an ice-cream first. B. Play sports before doing homework.
C. Pick up a pen and write at once. D. Listen to music to help think actively.

Do you find it difficult to put down your mobile phone? If yes, you are not alone. These days, many people can’t live without their phones. They reach for them as soon as they wake up in the morning. They keep checking their apps, such as QQ and WeChat, to get the latest news.
It may be difficult for these people to give up the bad habit, so Google developed an app called Dashboard to help them. This app helps users manage (管理) the time they spend on their phones.
First, Dashboard allows the users to look at their phone habits. For example, users can see how many times they have unlocked their phones, how many times they have checked their apps, and how much time they spend on each app each day. Once the users see this information, they will be able to make some changes. They can set a time limit (限制) for how long they can use each app every day. After they’ve hit the limit, they won’t be able to use the app until the next day. What’s more, Dashboard can help keep the phones silent when users put their phones down, so they will use the phones less. If you truly want to make full use of your free time instead of spending hours using your phone, this new app is just a good choice. After all, controlling yourself and having a strong will can help you most.

What is the future of AI (人工智能)? Will it be a good thing? We asked four students what they think.

I really think that AI will change the way we work, the way we live, and the way we think. Imagine if we could put a CPU into our brains! Soon we’ll be able to improve our math and memory. How exciting!

D
12. Dashboard may be helpful to people who ________.
A can’t use apps like WeChat B. know little about phones
C. want to use their phones less D. would like to get the latest news
13 What will happen if people reach the time limit they’ve set for an app?
A. Dashboard will keep the phone silent. B. They can’t use the app that same day.
C. Dashboard will set a new time limit. D. Their phone will turn itself off at once.
14. The underlined word “hit” in the passage means “________” in Chinese.
A. 达到 B. 放弃 C. 敲打 D. 增加
15. What is the best title for the passage?
A. An app to help you check your information
B. An app to help you give up all your bad habits
C. An app to help you make full use of your phone
D. An app to help you manage your time on your phone

第一节 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分, 满分10分)
阅读下面短文,完成短文后的问题。
A few days ago, I ran into a stranger as he passed by. I said sorry to him, and he said, “Excuse me too. I wasn’t even watching for you.” We were very polite, this stranger and I. Then we went on our way after saying goodbye.
Later in the kitchen at home, as I cooked our meal, my daughter Betty walked up to me, very quietly. When I turned around, I nearly knocked her down. “Get out of the way!” I shouted angrily. She ran away, crying.
That night, when I lay in bed, my husband said to me, “Mary, you were so rude (粗鲁的) to Betty. Go and look around on the kitchen floor, and you’ll find some flowers there. Betty brought those for you. She picked them herself—pink, yellow, and your favorite blue. ”
When I heard this, I thought deeply. While meeting with a stranger, I was calm and polite, but with my daughter, I was not patient. I felt sad and tears began to fall.
I quietly went to Betty’s bed. “Wake up, my dear,” I said. “Are these flowers you picked for me?” She smiled, “I found them by the tree. I knew you’d like them, especially the blue ones.” I said, “I am so sorry that I treated you that way today.” And she said, “Mommy, that’s okay—I still love you anyway.” I kissed her and said, “I love you too and I do love the flowers.”
That day Betty gave me a lesson on how to get along with each other in the family. I spent much time on my work before and didn’t realize how important family life was. In fact, many people are like me. I decided to do better in the future, then what about you?
