The sound of my mother preparing breakfast fills the house — my morning alarm.
As I walk toward the kitchen, I’m greeted by my mother standing over the cooker. She effortlessly cooks a dish that blends (融合) Western and Eastern styles, a beloved breakfast classic in our family. This is my grandmother’s recipe.
Since my grandmother’s passing, I’ve become more aware of my mother’s aging and her devotion to cooking for us. She has cooked for her family for more than 30 years, dividing her time between three countries — Korea, Canada and Germany. When my parents visit us from Korea, they stay with us for several months. My mother helps around the house, showing her cooking skills to provide delicious meals for me, my partner and our kids. In every other year, she and my dad will travel to Berlin to spend a couple of weeks with my sister and her partner.
According to Statista, most Canadians report spending between 31 and 60 minutes preparing an average weekday dinner for themselves and others in their houses. Ten percent stated that they spend more than an hour preparing their evening meal. My mother belongs to that 10 percent.
Her cooking goes beyond the kitchen, starting with careful grocery shopping trips where she examines produce and finds the best deals. She takes everyone’s preferences and needs into account. The meal she creates becomes a ritual (仪式), bringing the family together to connect and share. Helping her out in the kitchen requires a great deal of patience. Yet, I know it’s her way of expressing love.
As I prepare the vegetables, she notices that my carrots are not evenly sized. She pushes me aside to take over the task.
“Just do the dishes.’’

Have you ever noticed that some people can eat what they want and stay in shape, while others carefully watch what they eat and still put on weight? How frustrating! However, scientists are beginning to believe that some people get the ability to stay thin from their parents.
Scientists say that when some people eat, their bodies will naturally store the excess energy from food as fat. These people gain weight if they eat more than they need each day. Meanwhile, other people eat more than they need but their bodies are able to “burn off” the extra food without making fat.
To show that this is true, scientists have experimented on laboratory mice. They gave the mice a special diet with a lot of fat. Some mice gained weight while the other mice stayed thin even though both groups of mice ate the same amount of food and got the same amount of exercise. Scientists concluded that weight gain seemed to be influenced by genetic factors. They also believe they have now identified the genes that may cause this tendency. These genes, according to the scientists, get passed down the generations. Armed with this knowledge, they believe it may be possible to develop medicines that can target the genes and stop people from gaining weight.
The study of weight gain is becoming more important as the number of people who are overweight continues to grow. In the United States over seventy percent of the population have weight problems. This means they are at risk of illnesses such as high blood pressure and heart disease.
Current medicines for weight control do not work very well because they can have serious side effects, such as heart problems. However it takes a long time to develop and thoroughly test new drugs.
28. What’s the purpose of Paragraph 1?
A. To give some suggestions. B. To entertain the readers.
C. To lead in the topic of the text. D. To support an idea.
29. Why do scientists experiment on laboratory mice?
A. To prove some people get fat if they eat more than they need while others not.
B. To show they have great interest in helping people keep thin.
C. To show some people never be fat no matter how much they eat.
D. To prove people get the ability to keep thin from their parents.
30. What does the underlined phrase “burn off” in paragraph 2mean?
A. reduce B. store C. refuse D. digest
31. What can be concluded according to the last two paragraphs ?
A. Americans face more weight problems.
B. If we exercise enough, we will keep thin.
C. Being overweight may cause some illnesses.
D. Current medicines can’t help to control weight.
D
Odors (气味) are complex and often have changeable structures, and can show meaningful information about an animal’s surroundings, like the location of food sources. But it has previously been assumed that mammalian (哺乳动物的) brains can`t fully process these temporal changes in smell because they happen so rapidly, much faster than an animal can smell.
Using behavioral experiments, researchers at the Francis Crick Institute and UCL(University College London)found that mice can, in fact, detect very rapid variations within odors, at rates previously not thought possible. They also showed that mice can use this information to distinguish whether odors are coming from the same or different sources, even if they are very close to each other.
This suggests that the mammalian olfactory (嗅觉的) system is also key in processing the awareness of physical space and surroundings, guiding decisions important to survival.
Andreas Schaefer, group leader of the Sensory Circuits and Neurotechnology Laboratory at UCL says: “From an evolutionary (进化的) point of view our findings make sense as they help to explain why there is a lot of computational power within the olfactory bulb, the part of the brain where the nose sends signals to. It’s not only processing chemicals from odors but also calculating information about physical distance and sources. It would have been strange for evolution to create such processing power in this part of the brain if it were not being used to help the species survive.”
In one key experiment, the scientists trained mice to detect whether two odors were coming from the same source or separate sources. The mice were able to correctly distinguish this difference.
As part of the study, the scientists designed new technologies including a high-speed odor delivery device and equipment that can measure several odors with extremely high precision. These innovations will enable more complicated work on the olfactory bulb, increasing our knowledge of how this brain region processes information about the environment and influences behavior.
32. What has been previously assumed impossible for mammalian brains?
A. Sensing fast and small changes in odors.
B. Responding to different behaviors properly.
C. Spotting relationships among different odors.
D. Remembering the exact location of food sources.
33. What do Schaefer’s words imply about the olfactory bulb?
A. It sends signals to the nose.
B. It changes an animal’s evolution.
C. It detects an animal’s surroundings.
D. It recognizes different parts of the brain.
34. Why did the scientists create new technologies?
A. To investigate the structures of several odors.
B. To learn more about how the olfactory bulb works.
C. To develop more treatments for the olfactory bulb.
D. To explore the impact of the environment on the brain.
35. What does the text mainly tell us?
A. Mice might have a unique olfactory system.
B. Mammalian brains own computational power.
C. Different structures of odors attract different mice.
D. Rapid changing smells can teach mice about space.

The teenage years are a transformative period marked by great physical, psychological, and emotional changes. 36 They refer to the feelings that arise during interactions with others, such as gratitude, shame, sympathy, guilt, and pride.
Understanding and managing social emotions can help develop teenagers’ identities. Teenagers experience a wide range of emotions from social interactions, which significantly influences their self-understanding and social awareness. In the process, they learn to understand, and appropriately respond to both their own emotions and those of others. 37
In academic settings, social emotional competencies like self-regulation, motivation, and social awareness directly impact a teenager’s ability to learn, participate, and engage in school activities. 38 Teenagers with strong social emotional skills are better equipped to handle stress, resist peer pressure, and avoid risky behaviors, reducing the likelihood of developing mental health issues.
Learning social emotions involves a combination of personal experience, guidance, and formal education. 39 This environment influences teenagers’ earliest understanding of how to communicate and manage their emotions. They feel safe and supportive to express their emotions freely and learn to manage them without fear of judgment. Schools also play a significant role through social emotional learning programs that teach these skills in a structured environment. Community involvement, extracurricular activities, and peer (同伴) interactions offer additional opportunities for teenagers to practice and refine their social emotional skills.
40 It contributes to a teenager’s ability to manage their own emotions, understand others’ emotions, and face social complexities. This learning is a cornerstone for shaping their identity, influencing their interpersonal relationships, academic success, mental health, and future life outcomes.
A. What exactly are social emotions?
B. The journey into mature emotion is quite easy.
C. Social emotion learning for teenagers is essential.
D. Central to this phase is the concept of social emotions.
E. This helps shape their own personal principles and beliefs.
F. Families play a crucial role in modeling and developing these skills.
G. Moreover, social emotional skills are closely linked to mental health.

A 56-year-old enthusiastic backyard bird watcher named Stuart Dahlquist spent years 56 (leave) out food for a family of crows(乌鸦) and was left 57 (astonish) when he found a gift from them. He first became familiar with the bird family after he rescued two chicks that had come 58 their nest in his front yard five years ago.
Dahlquist had always considered 59 delightful to listen to the baby birds chirp(鸟叫)to their parents during feeding time. When he found the tiny crows 60 (lie) on the ground, he went to help. Despite the squawks of alarm from the adults, Dahlquist managed to pick up the chicks and put them back in the nest. He even left out food and water at the base of the tree in case they fell 61 second time. He then began regularly throwing bird food into his front yard, and the crows 62 (obvious) took notice.
One day Dahlquist was preparing for his daily feeding routine 63 he found a fir sprig (枝)decorated with a soda can tab, which was left in the exact spot 64 he fed the crows. The next day, he 65 (offer) another one and he was amazed by the discovery.

“Do you forget to bring your homework to school?” my sixth-grade math teacher asked. I nodded my head and said in a low voice, “Yes, sir.” What a mistake I had made! I had completed my math homework. But before I left home and headed for school, I forgot to put it into my schoolbag.
“You will get a zero then,” my math teacher said. I was shocked. I had never received a zero in a math class before. But the school had rules, and the teacher had to let everyone follow them. I was immediately worried about my final math average, which was based on my homework and the tests. Would I get a C or even a D at the end of the term? If so, what should I do?
My next class was a PE class. As I walked down the hall with my classmates, all those feelings rushed out in hot tears. I wiped them away as quickly as I could. But when we entered the gym and sat down in our spots on the floor, it was clear to everyone around me that I had been crying.
My PE teacher, Ms. Brown, was an athletic teacher, often with a smile on her face. Her class was a good mix of calisthenics (健美操) and games that can give us all a good workout. And Ms. Brown was nice and compassionate She loved her students and often came to help if the students were in trouble.
During that PE class, my mind was affected by the math homework and I was worried about my final math average. So I failed to devote my attention to Ms. Brown’s direction. And clearly, I was sad. I guessed that Ms. Brown found there was something wrong with me. When it was near the end of the PE class, she walked to me.

She sat down to comfort me.

Text 10
M: Hello, everyone. Today’s guest is just 14 years old, and he is protecting birds around the world. His name is Dessi Sieburth. His love of birds started when he made his first bird feeder about six years ago. Now, he has his own group called “Protecting Our Birds”. He has been making western bluebird boxes for about four years. Dessi hangs them up in trees and takes them down every week and looks at them to see if the bluebirds are nesting. He does that every year during the summer. He chooses the bluebird because they nest in dead trees, but a lot of dead trees are being cut down. Dessi makes these boxes to take the place of the trees. He does research about birds, runs a website to teach people about birds and how to help them, and builds boxes for birds. Dessi has interviewed biologists, written a lot of articles on birds for local newspaper. Dessi also recently spent 10 days in Alaska with his family where he did research on golden eagles in Denali National Park. So now let’s welcome Dessi Sieburth!

C 29. A 30. D 31. C
根据第一段“Have you ever noticed that some people can eat what they want and stay in shape, while others carefully watch what they eat and still put on weight? How frustrating! However, scientists are beginning to believe that some people get the ability to stay thin from their parents. (你有没有注意到,有些人想吃什么就吃什么,还能保持身材,而另一些人却小心翼翼地看着他们吃的东西,却还是长胖了?多么令人沮丧啊!然而,科学家们开始相信,有些人从父母那里获得了保持苗条的能力。)”先提出一个问题,再指出科学家开始相信人可以从父母那里获得保持苗条的实力,从而引出下文的实验及结果。故可知第一段的目的是引出文章主题,故选C。
29. 细节理解题。根据第二段的“Scientists say that when some people eat, their bodies will naturally store the excess energy from food as fat. These people gain weight if they eat more than they need each day. Meanwhile, other people eat more than they need but their bodies are able to “burn off” the extra food without making fat. (科学家说,当一些人吃东西时,他们的身体会自然地将食物中多余的能量储存为脂肪。如果这些人每天吃得比他们需要的多,他们的体重就会增加。与此同时,其他人吃得比他们需要的多,但他们的身体能够“燃烧掉”多余的食物而不会产生脂肪。)”和第三段“To show that this is true, scientists have experimented on laboratory mice. (为了证明这是正确的,科学家们在实验室的老鼠身上做了实验。)”可知,为了证明有些人吃得过多会发胖,而有些人则不会,科学家要在实验室老鼠身上做实验。故选A。
根据划线短语“Scientists say that when some people eat, their bodies will naturally store the excess energy from food as fat. These people gain weight if they eat more than they need each day. (科学家说,当一些人吃东西时,他们的身体会自然地将食物中多余的能量储存为脂肪。如果这些人每天吃得比他们需要的多,他们的体重就会增加。)”提到,如果这些人每天吃超过他们所需要的就会变得肥胖。故推测下文意思是“与此同时,其他人摄入超过身体所需的食物,他们的身体会燃烧多余的食物,不会变胖。”因此,burn off与digest“消化”是相同的意思,故选D。
31. 推理判断题。根据第四段“In the United States over seventy percent of the population have weight problems. This means they are at risk of illnesses such as high blood pressure and heart disease. (在美国,超过70%的人口有体重问题。这意味着他们有患高血压和心脏病等疾病的风险。)”可推知,超重可能会导致一些疾病。故选C。
A 33. C 34. B 35. D
根据第一段“Odors (气味) are complex and often have changeable structures, and can show meaningful information about an animal’s surroundings, like the location of food sources. But it has previously been assumed that mammalian (哺乳动物的) brains can`t fully process these temporal changes in smell because they happen so rapidly, much faster than an animal can smell.”(气味很复杂,通常具有可变的结构,可以显示有关动物周围环境的有意义的信息,例如食物来源的位置。 第二段中“Using behavioral experiments, researchers at the Francis Crick Institute and UCL(University College London)found that mice can, in fact, detect very rapid variations within odors, at rates previously not thought possible.”(弗朗西斯克里克研究所和伦敦大学学院的研究人员通过行为实验发现,老鼠实际上可以检测到气味的快速变化,其变化速度是以前认为不可能的。) 故选A。
根据第四段“It’s not only processing chemicals from odors but also calculating information about physical distance and sources. It would have been odd for evolution to create such processing power in this part of the brain if it were not being used to help the species survive.”(它不仅处理气味中的化学物质,还计算有关物理距离和来源的信息。
根据最后一段“As part of the study, the scientists designed new technologies including a high-speed odor delivery device and equipment that can measure several odors with extremely high precision. These innovations will enable more complicated work on the olfactory bulb, increasing our knowledge of how this brain region processes information about the environment and influences behavior.”(作为研究的一部分,科学家们设计了新技术,包括高速气味传送装置和可以以极高精度测量多种气味的设备。
通读全文,尤其是第二段“Using behavioral experiments, researchers at the Francis Crick Institute and UCL(University College London)found that mice can, in fact, detect very rapid variations within odors, at rates previously not thought possible. 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Community involvement, extracurricular activities, and peer (同伴) interactions offer additional opportunities for teenagers to practice and refine their social emotional skills.(这种环境影响了青少年对如何沟通和管理情绪的最早理解。
40. 根据后文“It contributes to a teenager’s ability to manage their own emotions, understand others’ emotions, and face social complexities. This learning is a cornerstone for shaping their identity, influencing their interpersonal relationships, academic success, mental health, and future life outcomes.(它有助于青少年管理自己的情绪,理解他人的情绪,以及面对社会复杂性的能力。这种学习是塑造他们的身份、影响他们的人际关系、学业成功、心理健康和未来生活成果的基石)”可知,本段总结了情感技能的重要性,C选项中Social emotion learning对应后文It。故C选项“对青少年来说,社会情感学习是必不可少的”符合语境,故选C。

【答案】
56. leaving 57. astonished 58. off 59. it 60. lying 61. a 62. obviously 63. when 64. where 65. was offered
故填off。
空格处是形式宾语,真正的宾语是动词不定式to listen to the baby birds chirp(鸟叫)to their parents,因此空格处填形式宾语,故填it。
a/an+序数词+time,意为“再一次;又一次”。 故填a。
be doing sth when... 故填when。
故填where。
故填was offered。

Paragraph 1:
She sat down to comfort me.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
I felt relaxed and decided to work harder at math.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
She sat down to comfort me. “Are you OK?” she asked. I told her about my trouble. Then Ms. Brown said to me, “We all make mistakes.” She told me what happened to her several days ago. I was surprised that she also made mistakes since I had thought she was perfect. She told me the world wouldn’t end for a zero in a math class and encouraged me to study hard.
I felt relaxed and decided to work harder at math. In math classes, I paid more attention to the teacher’s speeches. After school, I would do the math homework more carefully. And I left notes to remind me not to forget to bring my homework to school again. At the end of that term, based on my good daily performances and test scores, my final math average was an A. This experience taught me a lesson: as long as we learn from mistakes, we’re making progress.
