Since tea spread from China worldwide, it has become one of the most popular drinks in the world. Different countries have their own tea cultures, like afternoon tea in England.
The tradition of afternoon tea is a very special part of English culture. The custom (风俗) of drinking tea became popular in England during the 1660s. It was not until the mid-19th century that the idea of “afternoon tea” first appeared.
Afternoon tea is served in the mid-afternoon, between lunch and a late dinner. The idea came from Anna, the seventh Duchess (公爵夫人) of Bedford, in 1840. At the time, many families would eat a late dinner at about 8 p. m., which was one of only two main meals each day, and the other was a mid-morning meal.
With a long time between breakfast and dinner, Anna would become hungry around 4 o’clock in the afternoon. So she asked some tea, bread, butter and cakes to be brought to her room during the late afternoon. This became a habit of hers and she began inviting friends to join her.
Later, Anna continued it, sending cards to her friends asking them to join her for “tea and a walking in the fields”.
Others soon picked up on the idea. By the 1880s, afternoon tea became an event for many ladies. They would be dressed beautifully to be served in the sitting room between four and five o’clock, talking about the latest news, their everyday life and fashion.
Today’s afternoon tea is simpler than traditional afternoon tea. It is just a biscuit (饼干) or small cake and a cup of tea. However, there is one thing that has never changed—the meaning of afternoon tea.

Have you ever read a piece of scary news that leaves you with a sinking (低沉的) feeling? An article published (发表) by the Journal of Earth Science does so. It says New York is slowly sinking because of the buildings in the city.
The researchers calculated (计算) the total weight of the buildings in the city. It’s about 762 billion kilograms. This weight is too heavy for the city to handle (承受). It has led to the city sinking at a rate (速度) of 1 to 2 millimeters every year, according to CNN.

Huang Quande looked like this when tourists took photos with him on the Lijiang River in Guilin, Guangxi. He became very famous on the Internet. 71 Sadly, Huang passed away at the age of 94 on Feb 18.
According to Jimu News, Huang shows the true spirit of the Lijiang River. He was a positive (积极的) and kind man. 72 After he gave up fishing and became a photo model in 2008, he took photos with tourists worldwide.
The image of the fisherman on the back of the 20-yuan banknote is not just about one man. Instead, it is a cultural symbol that makes the Guilin landscape (风景) what it is, commented Guangming Daily.
In fact, the different backsides of the fifth series of renminbi banknotes show the most iconic (标志性的) landscapes in the country. 73

Since ancient times, the location has been a great place for moon watchers during Mid-Autumn Festival. The candlelights (烛光) from the three pagodas (塔) are reflected on the water and look like little moons.
75 Following the banknotes from 1 yuan to 100, Pan Jinyu from Chongqing had a “banknote tour” when he was 21. “I want to finish a ceremonial (有仪式感的) journey and feel the beauty of our country,” Pan told Chongqing Economic Times.
A.Each of them carries its own cultural value.
B.The renminbi pictures have helped make the landscapes even more popular among tourists.
C.In his 90s, Huang could still move his boat with speed.
D.For thousands of years, many emperors would go there and pray (祈祷) for the country’s prosperity (繁荣).
