Top cookbooks of 2023
The Wok: Recipes and Techniques by J.Kenji Lopez-Alt
The Wok’s appeal is not innovation; you can find many dishes like Kung Pao Shrimp and Cumin Lamb on many Chinese restaurant menus. But you don’t have to leave your home. As far as I’m concerned, it’s worth the sticker price to learn the techniques.
Turkey and the Wolf: Flavor Trippin’ in New Orleans by Mason Hereford
Chef Mason Hereford has put to paper some of the magic that draws locals and tourists alike to his popular New Orleans sandwich shop, Turkey and the Wolf. The cookbook is full of recipes accessible to home cooks. The meatloaf is my favorite.
Mi Cocina: Recipes and Rapture from My Kitchen in Mexico by Rick Martinez
With seven sections focused on different regions across the country, Rick Martinez guides you through some of the essential recipes for each. The recipes are lovely, but what I love most are the stories alongside each of them. Food is deeply personal and with Mi Cocina, Martinez is sharing his life in food and inviting you to come along.
I Am from Here: Stories and Recipes from a Southern Chef by Vishwesh Bhatt
Western India and the Southern U.S. share more culinary (烹饪的) similarities than you’d think, from rice varieties to fresh tomatoes. Here, these ingredients explode in a delicious combination of seasonings and essential cooking techniques.
21. Whose book provides guidance on Chinese cooking?
A. Rick Martinez’s. B. Vishwesh Bhatt’s.
C Mason Hereford’s. D. J.Kenji Lopez-Alt’s.

From the time he was a young boy, Jim Haskins always had a book in his hand. While other kids were outside playing ball, Jim was usually reading. He could be found in one of his favorite places: curled up underneath the kitchen table or up in the tree that grew in his front yard.
Jim was born in Demopolis, Alabama, during the time of segregation (隔离). Because Jim was Black, he was not allowed to check out a single book at the public library. Libraries were for whites only. The laws of segregation separated Jim from all the books he longed to read. But Jim was determined. He convinced a teacher at school to lend him books of her own. He even managed to get some public library books through a white woman whom his mom worked for doing laundry.
When Jim was a teenager, Black Americans’ struggle for equal rights was becoming the civil rights movement. Many brave people were taking risks by refusing to follow unfair segregation laws. Jim went to Montgomery, Alabama, and joined a civil rights group. The group was headed by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Jim believed in King’s nonviolent approach to change. Once, during a peaceful march, Jim was arrested. Because of that, his college expelled him.
He did graduate from another college. Afterward, he went on to teach school in Harlem, a part of New York City. As a teacher, he had trouble finding books that interested his Black students. So he decided to write his own books about successful Black Americans. Through his writing, he met and interviewed many of the people he admired, including Rosa Parks.
Today, libraries have more than one hundred books written by Jim Haskins, the boy who loved to read, and today, children of all races can walk through the doors of any public library and find interesting books that inform, entertain, and inspire them.
24. What can we learn from the description in paragraph 1?
A. Jim Haskins studied harder than other kids.
B. Jim Haskins had no interest in playing ball.
C. Jim Haskins was enthusiastic about reading.
D. Jim Haskins preferred to read under the table.
25. What does the underlined word “expelled” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Dismissed. B. Promoted. C. Praised. D. Monitored.
26. Why was Jim Haskins determined to write his own books?
A. To rise to be a famous writer. B. To put an end to segregation.
C. To appeal to Black students. D. To introduce the people he admired.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Pathways into the Library B. Anxiety for Knowledge
C. Struggle for Equal Rights D. Protest against Segregation

In a world where nearly 6 million fingerprint records of government employees are stolen in one computer hack, and where millions of people are victims of identity theft every year, the next step in cyber-security may well be mapping your brain.
Researchers at Binghamton University are working on a biometric (生物特征的) system that records how your brain reacts to certain images. With a little more polishing, the scientists’ brainchild could become the way you get into a safe deposit box, your office or past scanners at the airport. It could replace the password for your online banking, your e-mail or your social media accounts.
They started their project by measuring the brain waves of 30 subjects. The subjects were fitted with a cap that had 30 electrodes attached to it, and then shown various images and symbols — celebrity faces, words, pictures of food — on a computer screen in 200-millisecond bursts. The brain’s reaction was recorded.
The idea is that every time a person needs to use a “password”, he or she goes through the same procedure, and the results are matched to their first-time reaction. If the “brainprint” is cracked — like what happened to the fingerprint records — then the system is merely reset by running another set of images and collecting a different set of brain waves.“Even if that was stolen, you could just cancel it and record one to something else”, says professor Laszlo.
Laszlo and her team have shown that their system can be 100 per cent accurate. So one of the most difficult parts of making the system practical already has been overcome. Now, they’re spending much time recording accurate brainprints with as few as three electrodes, which could make recording in the future as easy as wearing a pair of special glasses. They’re also working with cheaper materials and different methods to see if they can bring the cost down.
28. What does the underlined word “brainchild” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The brain function. B. The biometric system.
C. The fingerprint record. D. The online password.
29. Why were the images and symbols shown to the subjects?
A. To match brainprints with pictures. B. To check the brain’s reaction.
C. To create their brainprints. D. To connect brain waves to electrodes.
30. What will happen when a brainprint fails?
A. A new one will be set again. B. A spare one will be ready beforehand.
C. The users’ security will be threatened. D. The fingerprint record will replace it.
31. What are the researchers doing with the programme now?
A. Improving its accuracy. B. Making it user-friendly.
C. Recording more brainprints. D. Increasing the number of electrodes.
D
Fish cats are a kind of cats that love water and love to fish. They are like tigers and lions, only much smaller, around twice the size of our average pet cats. They live in wetlands of South Asia and mangrove forests (红树林)of South and Southeast Asia. Like many endangered species, fish cats were in danger of dying out more than twenty years ago, mainly because of the great international need for fish food and the people's cutting of the mangroves at an extremely fast speed.
Mangroves of Southeast Asia are home to a great many fantastic species, like fish cats, turtles, shorebirds and others. Mangroves can protect soil, and they can be the first line of protection between storms, tsunamis and the millions of people who live next to them. The fact is that mangroves can store almost five to ten times more CO2 than other forests. So protecting mangroves may well be like protecting five to ten times more of other forests.
Ten years ago, in South India, many people came together to change the future of their home. In less than 10 years, with international support, the state forest departments and the local people worked together to restore over 20,000 acres of unproductive fish and shrimp farms back into mangroves. Now experts are working with them in helping study and protecting the mangroves as well as the species living in them. Fish and shrimp farmers are now willing to work with experts to test the harvest of nature protection like fishes, turtles and other species in mangroves. The local farmers are encouraged to protect and plant mangroves where they have been lost. A win-win-win for fish cats, local people and the global ecosystem(生态系统)is being built.
32. What made the fish cats endangered?
A. Natural enemies and environment pollution.
B. Cutting of mangroves and lack of water.
C. Being too large and need for fish food.
D. Less fish and overcutting of mangroves.
33. Why are mangroves so important?
A. They can prevent extreme weather.
B. They can take in more CO2 effectively.
C. They help plants grow better on the soil.
D. They are perfect home to all species.
34. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Ways of turning farms into forests.
B. Changes of South India in 10 years.
C. Efforts to protect the mangroves.
D. Work in protecting shrimps.
35. What's the best title for the text?
A. Fish Cats and Mangroves Protection
B. The Importance of Mangroves
C. Ways to Protect Fish Cats
D. Man and Nature

Henry was a college student at UC Santa Cruz. For years, he had been saving up to buy a decent used car. He had a part-time job at a local coffee shop. He repainted a room in his neighbor’s house in his free time. He had an internship (实习) at a software company. He saved a lot: Christmas money, birthday money, a penny here, a penny there.
While Henry worked to buy a car, Hua Kuan had a car to sell. Kuan was born and lived in Mexico for about 13 years. His parents had immigrated there from China.
In Mexico, he didn’t really grow up in a very nice area. He had to work when he was young, a lot of restaurant work—cleaning dishes, bussing tables.
Kuan’s family headed north to California in the late 1990s. A few years later, he was awarded a full scholarship to UC Berkeley. During Kuan’s junior year, his proud parents bought him a first car.
Kuan’s parents were blue-collar workers, and worked very hard for their money. They bought the car for their son, which was the only gift they were able to provide for him. And Kuan had been driving that car since it was brand new for about 14 years.
However, Kuan is a 35-year-old dentist now. His friends convinced him to upgrade his ride, so he listed his beloved car for sale on Craigslist. By chance, Henry saw the ad for the black car with gold wheels and over 150,000 miles. However, it was priced at $7000. He fell in love with the car the first time he saw it, and thought it just might be the one. Although it was a little bit over his budget, he determined to take a chance.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
So last Saturday, he headed north to meet Kuan.

M: That’s fascinating. Can you tell us something about the people you choose to work with in your projects?
W: I choose to work with people who are survivors, who are fighting everyday routines that are not always full of color.
M: And how do you see the future of this art form?
W: I believe that the future of photography will continue to be dominated by digital technology, around 95percent, and that’s perfectly fine. I accept that, as it makes my work distinct and special.
M: Thank you, Uldus. Let’s take a fifteen-minute break.

C 25. A 26. C 27. A

C
B 29. C 30. A 31. B

根据划线词前文的内容“Researchers at Binghamton University are working on a biometric(生物特征的) system that records how your brain reacts to certain images.(宾汉姆顿大学的研究人员正在研究一种生物识别系统,该系统可以记录大脑对特定图像的反应。)”可知,研究人员开发了一种生物特征识别系统,再根据画线词所在句“With a little more polishing, the scientists’ brainchild could become the way you get into a safe deposit box, your office or past scanners at the airport.(再稍微打磨一下,科学家的……就会变成进入你保险箱、办公室和机场扫描器的方式。)”可知,此处的划线词brainchild指的是上文提及的生物特征识别系统。前文提到正在研究一种生物识别系统,再将这种系统进行打磨,就能变成进入你保险箱、办公室和机场扫描器的方式。故选B。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“The subjects were fitted with a cap that had 30 electrodes attached to it, and then shown various images and symbols—celebrity faces, words, pictures of food—on a computer screen in 200-millisecond bursts. The brain’s reaction was recorded.(受试者戴上一个有30个电极的帽子,然后在电脑屏幕上以20毫秒的速度显示出各种各样的图象和符号——名人的脸、文字、食物的图片。大脑的反应被记录下来)”可知,图象和符号被展示给受试者是为了记录大脑反应,创造脑纹。故选C。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“If the “brainprint” is cracked—like what happened to the fingerprint records—then the system is merely reset by running another set of images and collecting a different set of brain waves. (如果“脑纹”像指纹记录一样受损,那么系统只需运行另一组图象并收集另一组脑电波就可以重置。)”可知,当一个脑纹失败时,新的将被重新设置。故选A。
根据最后一段“Now, they’re spending much time recording accurate brainprints with as few as three electrodes, which could make recording in the future as easy as wearing a pair of special glasses. They’re also working with cheaper materials and different methods to see if they can bring the cost down. (现在他们花了很多时间只用三个电极记录精确的脑纹,这可能使未来的记录像戴一副特殊的眼镜一样容易。他们也在用更便宜的材料和不同的方法来观察是否能降低成本。)”可知,现在研究人员正在使这个程序更容易使用、成本更低,也就是说对用户更友好。故选B。
D 33. B 34. C 35. A

故填in。

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
So last Saturday, he headed north to meet Kuan.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Kuan took a thousand dollars out of the envelope and handed it back.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
So last Saturday, he headed north to meet Kuan. Upon arrival, he told Kuan immediately what his aim was. He convinced Kuan that he had been working hard to save money to buy his own right car. However, it was still somewhat short to afford the car he had advertised. Seeing the honest boy, Kuan thought about his teen times and his parents’ struggling to raise the family. He agreed to give the boy a good bargain and received the envelop containing money.(74)
Kuan took a thousand dollars out of the envelope and handed it back. He informed Henry that he was greatly touched by his honesty and his efforts to achieve his goal. Meanwhile, he told Henry only work hard and stick to his dream can he benefit and fulfill his ambition. So the efforts Henry made beforehand worth the rest of the price and he just took a thousand dollars. Hearing the sayings, Henry was grateful, thanked Kuan and drove his own “new car” back happily.(72)
