Some of the world’s most famous musicians recently gathered in Paris and New Orleans to celebrate the first annual International Jazz Day. UNESCO( United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) recently set April 30 as a day to raise awareness of jazz music, its significance, and its potential as a unifying(联合) voice across cultures.
Despite the celebrations, though, in the U.S. the jazz audience continues to shrink and grow older, and the music has failed to connect with younger generations.
It’s Jason Moran’s job to help change that. As the Kennedy Center’s artistic adviser for jazz, Moran hopes to widen the audience for jazz, make the music more accessible, and preserve its history and culture.
“Jazz seems like it’s not really a part of the American appetite,” Moran tells National Public Radio’s reporter Neal Conan. “What I’m hoping to accomplish is that my generation and younger start to reconsider and understand that jazz is not black and write anymore. It’s actually color, and it’s actually digital.”
Moran says one of the problems with jazz today is that the entertainment aspect of the music has been lost. “The music can’t be presented today the way it was in 1908 or 1958. It has to continue to move, because the way the world works is not the same,” says Moran.
Last year, Moran worked on a project that arranged Fats Waller’s music for a dance party, “Just to kind of put it back in the mind that Waller is dance music as much as it is concert music,” says Moran. “For me, it’s the recontextualization. In music, where does the emotion(情感) lie? Are we, as humans, gaining any insight(感悟) on how to talk about ourselves and how something as abstract as a Charlie Parker record gets us into a dialogue about our emotions and our thoughts? Sometimes we lose sight that the music has a wider context,” says Moran, “so I want to continue those dialogues. Those are the things I want to foster.”
4. Why did UNESCO set April 30 as International Jazz Day?
A. To remember the birth of jazz.
B. To protect cultural diversity.
C. To encourage people to study music.
D. To recognize the value of jazz.
5. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Jazz becoming more accessible.
B. The production of jazz growing faster.
C. Jazz being less popular with the young.
D. The jazz audience becoming larger.
6. What can we infer about Moran’s opinion on jazz?
A. It will disappear gradually.
B. It remains black and white.
C. It should keep up with the times.
D. It changes every 50 years.
7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Exploring the Future of Jazz.
B. The Rise and Fall of Jazz.
C. The Story of a Jazz Musician.
D. Celebrating the Jazz Day.
【答案】4. D 5. C 6. C 7. A

【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中的UNESCO(United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) recently set April 30 as a day to raise awareness of jazz music, its significance, and its potential as a unifying(联合) voice across cultures.
Despite the celebrations, though, in the U.S. the jazz audience continues to shrink and grow older, and the music has failed to connect with younger generations可知,尽管UNESCO为爵士乐设了纪念日,但美国的爵士乐听众依然在减少,并且年龄在老化,爵士乐没能将年轻一代人连接起来。再结合It’s Jason Moran’s job to help change that(是Jason Moran的工作是帮助改变那一情况)可推测,that指代的是前文中爵士乐在年轻一代人中失去吸引力的现象。故选C。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中的The music can’t be presented today the way it was in 1908 or 1958. It has to continue to move, because the way the world works is not the same可知,Moran认为现在爵士乐不能 以1908或1958年的方式来呈现,因为世界已经不同了,所以爵士乐必须不断进步,说明随着时代的 发展,爵士乐也要跟上时代才不会被年轻一代所抛弃。

“I was a bad student who became an astronaut.” Scott Kelly, an engineer and a retired astronaut, visited the University of Wisconsin-Madison and shared his own experience.
As a kid, he was distracted in school and he earned terrible grades and barely graduated from high school. The biggest struggle was that he used to ignore what the teachers were saying, and even he started to accept the fact that he would never be able to achieve what he dreamed.
After graduation, everything changed, quite by accident, when he picked up and read The Right Stuff, Tom Wolfe’s classic account of the lives of the pioneering Americans who first explored space. Inspired at last, he decided he wanted to be an astronaut. To do that, he needed to get a technical degree. So starting that day, he was determined to do well in all the subjects. After so many years of daydreaming, it wouldn’t be easy. But he started thinking about it like a sport. The more he practiced his study skills, the better he got and the more he learned. Eventually, it became a competition with himself to see how good he could get.
But how can we find our motivation? There’s no fixed way. It’s about finding an interest and putting in the hard work. It’s likely that you just haven’t found what interests you or the topic is not being explained in a way that resonates (共鸣) with you. Reflect on your daily behavior. Do you find yourself absorbed in building things, interested in the ecosystem, enjoy reading the latest graphics in video games? That will give you clues about your interests-engineering, biology, coding, etc. Then talk to professionals in those fields and hear their stories for guidance and inspiration.
Kelly encourages young people to dream big and aim for the stars. Hard? Maybe. But anything worth having is worth pursuing.
8. What was Scott’s major challenge when he was in high school?
A. To understand what the teachers say in class.
B. To find his motivation in learning at school.
C. To finish the assignments with higher quality.
D. To realize his dream of becoming an astronaut.
9. What may Scott think of his learning when pursuing a technical degree?
A. Useful but irrelevant.
B. Interesting and pleasing.
C. Challenging but rewarding.
D. Stressful and time-consuming.
10. According to the passage, how can you motivate yourself?
A. By following other’s path and devoting yourself to it.
B. By running back over your behavior and putting efforts in it.
C. By trying various interests and picking what you like most.
D. By discovering personal interests and seeking professional advice.
11. Which of the following ideas would Scott probably agree with?
A. Well begun is half done.
B. Chances favors the prepared mind.
C. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.
D. Birds of a feather flock together.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. D 11. C

The waves were clean and curling one day about ten years ago when surfer Will Rose stepped into the water at Ocean Beach in San Diego, California. Rose was an experienced surfer then in his mid-20s. Midway through his session, he spotted a young surfer, perhaps 10 years old, who’d lost his board and was struggling in a powerful rip current (离岸流). Rose paddled over as the boy was carried underneath a long pier (码头) and s wept rapidly out to sea.
“It was one of the craziest rip currents I’ve ever seen,” Rose recalls.
He traded places with the boy, handing over his board and pushing the younger surfer towards the shore in a breaking wave. Rose held onto a pier pile tightly in the fast-flowing water as a lifeguard hurried over on his own board before helping him back to the beach.
Rose’s act of heroism, new research suggests, is a surprisingly common one for surfers. In a recent survey conducted in New Zealand, scientists found that throughout their lives, surfers reportedly rescue an average of three people who are drowning (溺死) or otherwise struggling in the water. The findings cast new light on the role of surfers: as largely overlooked guardians of the beach.
The study was conducted by Jamie Mead, then a graduate student at Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand. It began with an online survey of 418 surfers from across New Zealand. Processing the responses, Mead found that these surfers were claiming to have participated in a total of 1,274 rescues, including 296 times when they felt they’d saved a person’s life. Of these rescues, 73 percent took place on beaches without lifeguards present. It showed the crucial role surfers have played in protecting beach goers.
The survey responses also show that in nearly nine out of ten rescues, the people the surfers helped required no further treatment after the incident, and probably left no official record or report of the event.
“We need to get surfers the praise they deserve.” Mead says. The research, Mead writes in his paper, suggests that organizations involved in drowning prevention, “Should work closely with surfing communities on ways to reduce deaths at coastal beaches?”
12. What did Will Rose do when he saw the struggling young boy?
A. He ignored the boy. B. He called for help from a nearby lifeguard.
C. He helped the boy escape the danger. D. He helped the boy find his lost surfboard.
13. What is the purpose of mentioning Will Rose’s experience?
A. To highlight the dangers of rip currents.
B. To show the bravery and skills of experienced surfers.
C. To stress the potential dangers faced by young surfers.
D. To exhibit a typical rescue example by experienced surfers.
14. What are para.5 and para.6 mainly about?
A. The findings of Jamie Mead’s study. B. The purpose of Jamie Mead’s study.
C. Jamie Mead’s comments on surfers. D. Jamie Mead’s advice on drowning prevention.
15. What is the main conclusion Mead draws from the findings?
A. Surfers deserve public praise.
B. Increased lifeguard coverage is needed.
C. Beaches are safe with both surfers and lifeguards present.
D. Drowning prevention efforts need to involve surfing communities.
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. A 15. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲述了冲浪者在海滩上的重要作用,他们经常在危险中拯救人们的生命。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“He traded places with the boy, handing over his board and pushing the younger surfer towards the shore in a breaking wave.”(他与那个男孩交换了位置,把自己的冲浪板交给了他,并在破浪中把年轻的冲浪者推向岸边。)可知,Will Rose帮助了那个处于危险中的男孩,故选C。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Rose’s act of heroism, new research suggests, is a surprisingly common one for surfers. In a recent survey conducted in New Zealand, scientists found that throughout their lives, surfers reportedly rescue an average of three people who are drowning (溺死) or otherwise struggling in the water. The findings cast new light on the role of surfers: as largely overlooked guardians of the beach.”(新的研究表明,罗斯的英雄主义行为在冲浪者中非常普遍。
根据第五段“Of these rescues, 73 percent took place on beaches without lifeguards present. It showed the crucial role surfers have played in protecting beach goers.”(在这些救援中,73%发生在没有救生员在场的海滩上。这表明冲浪者在保护海滩游客方面发挥了至关重要的作用。)根据第六段“The survey responses also show that in nearly nine out of ten rescues, the people the surfers helped required no further treatment after the incident, and probably left no official record or report of the event.”(调查结果还显示,在近九成的救援行动中,被冲浪者帮助的人在事件发生后不需要进一步治疗,可能没有留下任何官方记录或报告)可知,第五段和第六段主要关于杰米·米德的研究结果。故选A。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“The research, Mead writes in his paper, suggests that organizations involved in drowning prevention, “Should work closely with surfing communities on ways to reduce deaths at coastal beaches?””(Mead在他的论文中写道,这项研究表明,参与防溺水的组织应该与冲浪社区紧密合作,寻找减少海滩死亡的方法。)可知,Mead的主要结论是防溺水的努力需要涉及到冲浪社区。故选D。

It has to continue to move because the way the world works is not the same,” says Moran.
C To encourage people to study music.
D. To recognize the value of jazz.
5. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Jazz becoming more accessible.
B. The production of jazz growing faster.
