A group of Americans who taught English in other countries recently discussed their experiences. They found that miscommunication was always possible even over something as simple as “yes” and “no”. On her first day in Micronesia, an island in the Pacific, Lisa thought people weren’t paying any attention to her. The day was hot. She went into a store and asked, “Do you have cold drinks?” The woman there didn’t say anything. Lisa repeated the question. Still the woman said nothing. She later learned that the woman had answered her. She had raised her eyebrows (眉毛) , which in Micronesia means “yes”. Jan remembered an experience she had in Bulgaria, a country in Europe. She went to a restaurant that was famous for its cabbage. She asked the waiter, “Do you have cabbage today?” He nodded his head. Jan waited, but the cabbage never came. In that country, a nod means “no”. Tom had a similar problem when he arrived in India. After explaining something in class, he asked his students if they understood. They answered with many different nods and shakes of the head. He thought some people had not understood, so he explained again. When he asked again, they did the same thing. He soon found out that his students did understand. In India, people nod and shake their heads in different ways depending on where they come from. You have to know where a person is from to understand whether they mean “yes” or “no”. 24. The Americans teaching English in other countries found that they __________. A. should go abroad for vacations B. needed to learn foreign languages C. should often discuss their experiences D. had problems with communication 25. People in Micronesia show “yes” by __________. A. saying “no” B. raising eyebrows C. shaking heads D. nodding heads 26. Which of the following is TRUE according to this passage? A. In Bulgaria, nodding heads means “no”. B. Jan taught English on a Pacific island. C. Lisa was trying to buy some cabbage. D. In India, only shaking heads means “yes”. 27. Tom misunderstood his class at first because __________. A. he didn’t know a nod means “no” in Indian. B. he didn’t explain everything clearly enough C. some students didn’t understand his questions D. he did not know much about Indian culture 【答案】24. D 25. B 26. A 27. 根据第一段中的“They found that miscommunication was always possible even over something as simple as “yes” and “no”.(他们发现,即使是在简单的‘是’和‘不是’上,沟通不周也是可能的)”可知,在外国教英语的美国人发现像“是”和“不是”这样简单的沟通误解时有发生,也就是他们发现沟通有问题,故选D。 根据第二段中“She had raised her eyebrows (眉毛), which in Micronesia means ‘yes’.(她扬起了眉毛,这在密克罗尼西亚意味着‘是’)”可知,密克罗尼西亚人用扬起眉毛表示“是”,故选B。 根据第三段中“Jan remembered an experience she had in Bulgaria(简想起了她在保加利亚的一次经历)”和“In that country, a nod means ‘no’.(在那个国家,点头表示‘不’)”可知,在保加利亚,点头意味着“不”,故选A。 根据最后一段中的“In India, people nod and shake their heads in different ways depending on where they come from. You have to know where a person is from to understand whether they mean ‘yes’ or ‘no’.(在印度,人们点头和摇头的方式不同,这取决于他们来自哪里。你必须知道一个人来自哪里,才能理解他们的意思是‘是’还是‘不是’)”可知,在印度,人们以不同的方式点头和摇头,这取决于他们来自哪里,你必须知道一个人来自哪里,才能知道他们的意思是“是”还是“不是”,Tom最初误解了学生们的意思就是因为他不了解这方面的印度文化,故选D。 C For many kids, the Internet is at their fingertips. From computers to smartphones, a web of information is open to them. According to a new report, about three out of four kids aged 12 to 15 connect the Internet using a mobile device from time to time. Many younger kids are online too. Julian Zeitlinger, 9, from New Jersey, uses his computer to watch videos and play games. To keep him safe online, his parents monitor his web use and discuss Internet safety with him. “I ask my parents whether something is nice or bad.” Julian says. Mobile devices offer more ways than ever to share personal information. The information can be dangerous in the wrong hands. A study found that 62% of children aged 8 to 17 have had an unpleasant online experience. Have you ever had to enter a parent’s e-mail address when signing up for a website? That safety measure is there because of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act(COPPA). The law says sites for kids under 13 cannot collect personal information, such as a phone number or full name, without a parent’s permission. This July, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will update COPPA for the first time since the law was created in 1998 when there were no smart phones. The nature of the way kids get online has changed, FTC lawyer Phyllis Marcus said. When the changes take effect, COPPA will apply to mobile devices and newer forms of advertising. It will expand what falls under “personal information” to include videos, photographs, and services that give users location. COPPA doesn’t cover everything that can go wrong online. That is why kids and parents need to know what to look out for and to stop and think before sharing information online. “There is a misunderstanding that if a site is following COPPA, it is totally safe,” says privacy expert ShaiSamet. He runs kidSAFE, which checks whether a site meets kidSAFE standards and is safe. “It’s important that kids know how useful the Internet is but that it also can be dangerous if you are not careful.” he adds. 28. Julian’s parents monitor his web use to make sure ______. A. he stays safe on the Internet B. he doesn’t play computer games C. he controls his online time D. he doesn’t watch too many videos 29. What’s one of the changes with COPPA? A. It says no to any kind of advertising. B. It prevents users from making their location public. C. It covers everything that goes wrong online. D. It broadens the concept of personal information. 30. People often hold the wrong idea that ______. A. formal websites are comparatively safe B. the Internet is becoming safer and safer C. COPPA can ensure their complete safety D. daily checks prevent future online problems 31. Why does the author write the passage? A. To ask parents to look out for their kids. B. To talk about online safety for children. C. To introduce a new law. D. To sell an online product. A 29. D 30. C 31. 根据文章第二段“Julian Zeitlinger, 9, from New Jersey, uses his computer to watch videos and play games. To keep him safe online, his parents monitor his web use and discuss Internet safety with him.(9岁的Julian Zeitlinger来自新泽西州,他用他的电脑看视频和玩游戏。为了保证他的网络安全,他的父母监督他的网络使用,并与他讨论网络安全问题)”可知,Julian的父母监督他的网络使用来确保上网安全问题。故选A。 根据文章倒数第三段“When the changes take effect, COPPA will apply to mobile devices and newer forms of advertising. It will expand what falls under “personal information” to include videos, photographs, and services that give users location.(当这些变化生效时,COPPA将适用于移动设备和更新的广告形式。它将扩展“个人信息”,包括视频、照片和提供用户位置的服务)”可知,COPPA的改变之一是拓宽了个人信息的概念。故选D。 【30题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章最后一段““There is a misunderstanding that if a site is following COPPA, it is totally safe,” says privacy expert ShaiSamet.(隐私专家ShaiSamet说:“有一种误解是,如果一个网站遵循了COPPA,它就是完全安全的。”)” 根据文章第四段“That safety measure is there because of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act(COPPA). The law says sites for kids under 13 cannot collect personal information, such as a phone number or full name, without a parent’s permission.(这项安全措施是基于儿童在线隐私保护法案(COPPA)。 B。 D Stores play music to change the way customers feel. Clothing stores for teenagers play popular music. It is exciting and makes the customers feel happy, but music does more than that. It can change the way a person shops. According to studies, the volume (音量) of music changes how people shop. Customers shop quickly when store music is very loud. They hurry through the store, but they buy just as much. When music is quiet, customers shop slowly. Customers take time to look at the products and talk with the salespeople. Quiet music is good for products that take time and information to buy. Slow music makes people slow down. In restaurants with slow music, customers spend more time eating. Slow music also slows down customers in supermarkets. Customers notice more products as they walk through the store. With slow music in supermarkets, sales go up by 38 percent. Familiar music gives shoppers a good idea of time. People know the beginning, middle, and end of a familiar song. When customers hear music that is not familiar, they don’t notice the time. When they don’t notice the time, they spend more time shopping and buy more. People remember past experiences and feelings when they hear familiar music. Many stores play old, happy music so customers feel good. When customers hear new music, they forget about the world outside of the store. Some stores use new music so their customers relax while they shop. Stores choose music that fits their products. A bookstore plays classical music and jazz. It gives the store a serious and intelligent feeling. 32. What’s the best title for the passage? A. Customers’ Music B. Store Music C. Customers and Music Owners D. Music and Shopping 33. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about? A. Quiet music is good for products. B. People shop slowly when they hear quiet music. C. People shop quickly when they hear loud music. D. The degrees of loudness of music influence the way of shopping. 34. Which of the following does the passage NOT mention about store music? A It changes the way people shop. B. She slowly opened her sleepy eyes and looked at the clock on the bedside table. It was already nine o’clock! Though still sleepy, Jane knew she had to get up because her mother had been working in her office day and night for several days and she couldn’t expect her younger brother Tom, who was sleeping like a pig, to answer the phone. She quickly put on a coat and dashed into the living room. As she picked up the receiver, on the other end came the warm greeting, “Good morning, my dear!” It was the voice of her father, a sea man who seldom returned home due to his duties earning money to support the family. On hearing her father’s voice, Jane’s sleepiness disappeared. Born in a not-so-rich family, Jane and Tom felt the stress of life, but they were happy to enjoy the family atmosphere. At school, they were straight-A students and took part in various after-school activities, earning the pride of their loved ones. “Good morning, Dad. Why are you calling so early on a weekend?” Jane inquired, pretending to be slightly annoyed. “Tom and I have been very nice recently.” “My dear, today is your mother’s birthday. I have ordered a cake online and it will arrive at our doorstep in the late afternoon. Do remember to take the cake. It is my surprise for your mother.” Upon hearing her father’s words, Jane felt a twinge of embarrassment. How could she have forgotten such an important day! While chatting with her father, Jane’s gaze (凝视) wandered around the room and saw a lot of dirty clothes scattered (散落) on the sofa. The floor hadn’t been cleaned for a few days since her mother had been too busy with work this week to attend to such domestic matters. Glancing at the clock again, Jane realized she still had enough time to prepare a surprise for her mother. “Well, Dad, now I’m going to wake Tom up. We will give Mum a surprise, too!” Jane said and hung up the telephone. Paragraph 1: Jane hurried to Tom’s room and shared her plan with him. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: “Happy birthday, Mum!” Jane and Tom shouted when their mother opened the door. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Jane hurried to Tom’s room and shared her plan with him. After listening to Jane, Tom readily accepted her idea. The big cleaning plan began. Jane collected the clothes from sofa and began to do the laundry. Meanwhile, Tom was busy mopping the floor back and forth with all his strength, really aware of what hard work his Mum had at home! They had just finished the cleaning when the delivery boy came to the door. They took the cake and thanked him happily. It was a beautiful cake with a princess on it, enough to show the importance of Mom in Dad’s heart. Everything was ready for the big moment. “Happy birthday, Mum!” Jane and Tom shouted when their mother opened the door. Confused and surprised, Mum stood frozen. When Mum realized what had happened, a warm current rose in her heart. Staring at the clean floor and the washed clothes and the big cake, she could hardly contain her excitement and hugged them tightly. “It is the best birthday gift I have ever had!” Mum said emotionally. Just then Jane took out her smartphone and took a happy video named Mum’s Birthday and sent it to Dad. What an unforgettable birthday! 词汇激活 行为类 ①收集:collect/gather ②控制:contain/control ③拥抱:hug/embrace 情绪类 ①激动:excitement/thrill ②惊讶的:surprised /astonished 【点睛】【高分句型1】 Meanwhile, Tom  was busy mopping the floor back and forth with all his strength, really aware of what hard work his Mum had at home! B Living in a foreign culture can be exciting, but it can also be confusing. B. he didn’t explain everything clearly enough C. some students didn’t understand his questions D. he did not know much about Indian culture C For many kids, the Internet is at their fingertips. Mobile devices offer more ways than ever to share personal information The information can be dangerous in the wrong hands. 28. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$null
