B Linda Brown, a real estate agent, believes that when it comes to solving homelessness, it takes a village. She spent nine years supporting homeless people in Springfield, Missouri, through a charitable organization called The Gathering Tree, which welcomed people a few times each week during daylight hours, providing a safe and welcoming place for them to take showers, socialize, or simply rest. But they had to close their doors for the night. “One cold winter night, I watched as my friends walked off into the darkness to a wet, cold camp, while we went home to a warm bed,” Linda said, “I realized I had to do something.” She had an idea to create a village of tiny houses to make sure no one slept outside on her watch! Linda started fundraising. She began by appealing to her fellow estate agents in the area before branching out into local businesses. Using these donations, Linda purchased a nearby abandoned area that already had the infrastructure in place. By February 2019, they’d built 31 tiny homes for their Eden Village and found residents for each one. All the residents must be good neighbors in order to stay in the village, and they certainly are! Linda was happy when she learned that the village actually increased local property values rather than lowering them as some people had feared. Linda hasn’t stopped working since Eden Village began. A second village opened in the fall of 2020, and there’s a third location in the works as well! She hopes to have five villages across Springfield within the next five years, helping more than 200 homeless people get off the streets and into a new life. To this day, Linda firmly believes that there are a million reasons someone can become homeless, but each of them can be solved with love and community involvement. 24. What does The Gathering Tree do for the homeless? A. It raises money for them. B. It builds tiny houses for them. C. It helps them find warm camps. D. It provides them with day shelters. 25. What did some people fear? A. Their own homes would be lost . B. Their jobs would be taken over . C. Their safety would be seriously threatened. D. Their local property values would be lowered. 26. What does Linda expect to do? A. Help homeless people find work. B. Reach out to more homeless people. C. Build more infrastructure at Eden Village. D. Get homeless people involved in building Eden Village. 27. Which of the following can best describe Linda? A. Ambitious and scholarly. B. Brave and imaginative. C. Sympathetic and innovative. D. Generous and independent. C Trillions of evolution’s wonders, red-eyed periodical cicadas (蝉) that have pumps in their heads and jet-like muscles in their bodies, are about to emerge in numbers not seen in decades and possibly centuries. Crawling out from underground every 13 or 17 years, with a collective song as loud as jet engines, the periodical cicadas are nature’s kings of the calendar. These black bugs with bulging eyes differ from their greener cousins that come out annually. They stay buried year after year, until they surface and take over a landscape. This spring, an unusual cicada double population is about to invade a couple of parts of the United States in what University of Connecticut cicada expert John Cooley called “cicada-geddon”. The last time these two broods (a group of creatures) came out together was in 1803. Thomas Jefferson, the then president, wrote about cicadas in his Garden Book but mistakenly called them locusts (蝗虫). Usually mistaken for hungry and unrelated locusts, periodical cicadas are more annoying rather than causing great economic damage. They can hurt young trees and some fruit crops, but it’s not widespread and can be prevented. The largest geographic brood in the nation — called Brood XIX and coming out every 13 years — is about to march through the Southeast, having already created countless boreholes in the red Georgia clay. It’s a sure sign of the coming cicada occupation. “They emerge when the ground warms to 64 degrees, which is happening earlier than it used to because of climate change,” scientists said. “The bugs are brown at first but darken as they mature.” Soon after the insects appear in large numbers in Georgia and the rest of the Southeast, cicada cousins that come out every 17 years will inundate Illinois. They are Brood ⅩⅢ. “And when you put those two together… you would have more than anywhere else any other time,” University of Maryland entomologist Paula Shrewsbury said. “These two broods may actually overlap — but probably not interbreed in a small area near central Illinois.” 28. How are periodical cicadas different from their greener cousins? A. They appear once a year. B. They look more beautiful. C. They have stronger muscles. D. They have a longer life circle. 29. What is a common belief on periodical cicadas? A. They are a type of locusts. B. They have underestimated advantages. C. They are Thomas Jefferson’s inspiration. D. They only eat young trees and fruit crops. 30. What can be inferred about Brood ⅩⅨ? A. The red Georgia clay is more beneficial to them. B. Climate change may be confusing their schedules. C. The adult ones only live 4-6 weeks before they die. D. They are expected to be found throughout the world. 31. What can best replace the underlined word “inundate” in the last paragraph? A. Strike out. B. Give up. C. Flood into. D. Jump at. D Initial conversations can have a huge impact on how relationships develop over time. People are often stuck in the impressions they think they might have made the minute they finish speaking with someone for the first time: “Did they like me or were they just being polite?” “Were they deep in thought or deeply bored?” To find out whether these worries are necessary, we have conducted nearly 10 years of research. In our studies, participants in the UK talked with someone they had never met before. Afterward, they were asked how much they liked their conversation partner and how much they believed that their conversation partner liked them. This allowed us to compare how much people believed they were liked to how much they were actually liked. Time and time again, we found that people left their conversations with negative feelings about the impression they made. That is, people systematically underestimate how much their conversation partners like them and enjoy their company — a false belief we call the “liking gap”. This bias (偏见) may seem like something that would occur only in initial interactions, but its effects extend far beyond a first impression. Surprisingly, the liking gap can constantly affect a variety of relationships, including interactions with coworkers, long after the initial conversations have taken place. Having a larger liking gap is associated with being less willing to ask workmates for help, less willing to provide workmates with open and honest feedback, and less willing to work on another project together. There are numerous strategies to minimize your biased feelings. One place to start is shifting your focus of attention. Try to direct your attention to your conversation partner, be genuinely curious about them, ask them more questions, and really listen to their answers. The more you’re zeroed in on the other person, and the less you’re focused on yourself, the better your conversation will be and the less your mind will turn to all the things you think you didn’t do well. 32. Why did the author carry out 10 years of research? A. To dismiss national concerns. B. To check out a potential bias. C. To enhance human communication. D. To develop harmonious relationships. 33. What is one effect of people’s liking gap? A. Fewer chances of new projects. B. Underestimation of their ability. C. Bad relationships with people around. D. Low willingness to interact with others. 34. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph? A. Restate opinions. B. Deliver warnings. C. Give suggestions. D. Make a summary. 35. Which might be the best title for the text? A. Liking Gap May Influence Work Performances B. First Impressions Rely On Initial Conversations C. People Probably Like You More Than You Think D. How People Like You Matters Less Than You Assume Floods can come from multiple sources. Tommy was running as fast as he could, focused on nothing but his destination----the shop on the street corner. Two weeks ago he saw figurines(小塑像) of Marvel superheroes on the shelves and felt he had to have one. He’s been walking the neighbor’s dog ever since then to earn money to fulfil his little dream. He was so excited and barely noticing the world around him. Maybe that’s why he tripped over the legs of a homeless woman, who was sitting on the pavement, her back against the wall. He murmured(低语) "sorry" and moved on to his destination. Once he entered the shop, he went straight to the shelves with figurines. Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, and many more----all of his admired heroes. With his heart pounding like crazy he reached for Spiderman. “You like these, true believer?” Tommy turned around An old man was standing behind him with a wide smile on his face. “Y-yes, …Yes, they’re awesome!” answered Tommy. “They’re strong and fast and help other people a lot ...”the boy looked at figurines in admiration. “I wish I could be a superhero too.” “Then become one!” said the old man. “How?” Tommy asked in surprise. “I don’t have any superpowers.” “And why would you need them?” the old man smiled. Seeing the confusion on the boy's face, he squatted(蹲下) and put his hands on Tommy's arms. “Did you know that shopkeeper lady over there has a disabled husband? She’s been working hard and taking care of him for years. I’ve never heard a word of complaint from her. And this person ---” he pointed at a redhead man, who just entered the shop. “He’s a firefighter; he’s saved countless lives. He never gives up, no matter how dangerous the situation seems to be.” The old man looked Tommy in the eyes and smiled. “You don’t need a superpower to be a hero for someone else. The path of a superhero starts not in the mind, not in the muscles, but in the heart.” Tommy lowered his head and looked at his shoes thinking intensely. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The homeless woman was right there, where he saw her last time. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 永春一中2024届高三年最后一卷 英语科试卷 考试时间120分钟,试卷总分150分 第一部分:听力(共两节,满分 30 分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1. 5分,满分7. 5分) 听下面5段对话。 What does the man do? I looked at it and thought of summer. M: Hmm, your description really teaches me something about appreciating abstract art. Maybe I should go and give this show a try this Saturday. W: You really should. 18. What caused the closure of Pittwater Road? A. A fallen tree. B. A flooded river. C. A car accident. 19. What happened at Town Hall Station? 24. D 25. D 26. B 27. A. Strike out. B. Give up. C. Flood into. D. Jump at. D 29. A 30. B 31. 根据第一段中“Crawling out from underground every 13 or 17 years, with a collective song as loud as jet engines, the periodical cicadas are nature’s kings of the calendar. These black bugs with bulging eyes differ from their greener cousins that come out annually. They stay buried year after year, until they surface and take over a landscape. 根据第二段中“Usually mistaken for hungry and unrelated locusts, periodical cicadas are more annoying rather than causing great economic damage. (周期性的蝉通常被误认为是饥饿的不相干的蝗虫,它们更令人讨厌,而不是造成巨大的经济损失。)”可知,人们普遍认为周期性蝉是蝗虫的一种。故选A。 根据第三段中““They emerge when the ground warms to 64 degrees, which is happening earlier than it used to because of climate change,” scientists said. (科学家们说:“当地面升温到64度时,它们就会出现,由于气候变化,这种情况比以前发生得更早。”)”可知,气候变化可能影响了周期性的蝉的出现时间,即,气候变化可能正在混淆它们的周期时间。故选B。 【31题详解】 词句猜测题。根据最后一段中“Soon after the insects appear in large numbers in Georgia and the rest of the Southeast, cicada cousins that come out every 17 years will... (这些昆虫在乔治亚州和东南部其他地区大量出现后不久,每17年出现一次的蝉表亲将……)”和“And when you put those two together… you would have more than anywhere else any other time (当你把这两者放在一起时,你会比其他任何时候都有更多的昆虫。)” A. strike out罢工;B. give up放弃;C. flood into涌入;D. jump at纵身一跃。故选C。 D Initial conversations can have a huge impact on how relationships develop over time. How People Like You Matters Less Than You Assume 【答案】32. B 33. D 34. C 35. One place to start is shifting your focus of attention. Try to direct your attention to your conversation partner, be genuinely curious about them, ask them more questions, and really listen to their answers. The more you’re zeroed in on the other person, and the less you’re focused on yourself, the better your conversation will be and the less your mind will turn to all the things you think you didn’t do well.(有很多策略可以减少你的偏见。 根据第三段“Time and time again, we found that people left their conversations with negative feelings about the impression they made. That is, people systematically underestimate how much their conversation partners like them and enjoy their company — a false belief we call the “liking gap”.(我们一次又一次地发现,人们在结束谈话时对自己留下的印象感到消极。 Floods can come from multiple sources. “You like these, true believer?” Tommy turned around. An old man was standing behind him with a wide smile on his face. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: Tommy lowered his head and looked at his shoes thinking intensely. Finally he raised his head. "So I am supposed to...” he stopped mid-sentence when he realized that he was alone. He turned his head left and right, but the old man was nowhere to be seen. His eyes lit up---- he already had an idea of what he should do. He looked at figurines for the last time and moved towards the counter. "Two sandwiches and a cup of tea please, "he said, and then returned, food in hand. The homeless woman was right there, where he saw her last time. Tommy came closer and carefully gave the woman his buys. Her eyes opened wide in surprise, then filled with tears. “Thank you," she whispered. Tommy bowed his head, turned around and went back home. He was moving faster and faster and finally he started to run. Strange energy filling his body made him feel like he could fly. When he finally stopped, he was breathing heavily, but he didn’t feel tired. He smiled happily --- it was a wonderful feeling. And nothing could stop it. 开始:start/begin/commence ②.充满:be filled with/be full of 情绪类 ①. Thank for/show one’s appreciation/show one’s gratitude/be grateful ②.
