It took a wave of water full of plastic crashing over Babacar Thiaw as he went out to sea for him to decide to act. By the time his surfboard had carried him back to Virage beach on the north shore (岸) of Senegal’s capital, Dakar, Thiaw had a plan to make use of the surfing community he had built there.
Within a year he had turned Copacabana Surf Village, which he founded with his father two decades ago, into a center for young Senegalese eco-surfers, where he organizes beach cleans, environmental courses for children and runs Senegal’s first zero-waste restaurant.
Thiaw grew up in a fishing village near the beach, and the Copacabana Surf Village’s foundations (地基) were laid by his fisher father, who after a day’s work would head to Virage beach to surf on a wooden board. They worked hard to turn the Village into a business by renting out surfboards and later offering lessons with the help of visiting overseas surfers.
It is now a popular surfing location, attracting tourists. It’s also a place where Thiaw teaches young Senegalese how to surf and care for the ocean they spend so much time in.
“When we come to the water to surf, we can see how much plastic is ending up here and it disturbs (使烦恼) us,” says Mohammed Sarr, 17, who Thiaw taught to surf. Sarr says he has become more aware of how he uses and deals with plastic because he and his family, who live near the sea, are directly affected.
Thiaw says there was doubt about the plastic-free initiative (倡议), with diners questioning whether it was healthy for him to be serving water in reusable glass bottles. But he stresses that everyone needs to understand the requirement to change .“ Once the environment is getting worse, you and your family and friends will surely suffer,” he says.
4. What caused Thiaw to decide to make a change?
A. The attack of seawater. B. The sight of plastic in the sea.
C. The dirty Virage beach. D. The needy surfing community.
5. What can we learn about Thiaw?
A. He is very good at running a business. B. He founded the Village to save the sea.
C. He was the first to develop Village beach. D. He tried hard to get support from the public.
6. Why does the author mention Sarr in paragraph 5?
A. To show Thiaw’s influence on him. B. To describe his relationship with Thiaw.
C. To share his worries about Thiaw’s efforts. D. To praise his surfing skills taught by Thiaw.
7. What does Thiaw expect of the restaurant-goers?
A. They’ll have a healthy diet. B. They’ll donate to locals in need.
C. They’ll do their part for the environment. D. They’ll contribute to running the restaurant.

Customers would feel right at home as Chili recently applied Rita the robot to 51 restaurants, in addition to the 10 in which the technology was already being tested. Rita, created by Bear Robotics, can act as a sort of server, guiding guests to their tables, carrying food, even singing “Happy Birthday”.
While this type of automation is quickly expanding (扩展) throughout the restaurant industry due to historic labor shortages (劳动力短缺), Wade Allen, Senior Vice President of Innovation, said Rita’s pilot wasn’t performed because of the “economic situation”.
Chili’s growth shows the restaurant industry is confident in Rita’s early performance, particularly in utilization (使用) and error rates. Allen said Rita produced “great utilization rates”, based on whether employees (员工) were using and communicating with the technology. Even seemingly unuseful functions such as “singing” provide more opportunities and higher utilization rates that are above 30%. On the error side, Allen said Rita functions without a problem over 99% of the time.
However, such technology could be seen as bells and whistles to customers. And, indeed, there is a risk here as most customers have said they prefer to communicate with human workers even as this type of guest-facing technology increases.
Allen said the company hasn’t looked deep to see if Rita translates to labor savings. They also don’t know whether Rita’s presence has affected servers’ tips, stating, “We hope to learn more as Rita expands.”
“My goal is not to take people out of the service industry; people are what make this industry. My goal is to make our employees’jobs easier, and I absolutely think robotics is a service progress. The future is a world where we still have amazing service, but we can simplify and automate some of the difficult and unnecessary tasks,” Allen said, “We know Rita adds value. We’re not toying with this. Our intention is to go broader.”
8. What do we know about Rita the robot according to the passage?
A. It reduces servers’ tips. B. It shakes up the job market.
C. It increases labor costs in restaurants. D. It is skilled in the restaurant industry.
9. What made the restaurant industry feel confident in Rita?
A. It made a big profit for owners. B. It expanded rapidly worldwide.
C. It won the support of employees. D. It was equipped with unique functions.
10. What does the underlined part “bells and whistles” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Practical ideas. B. Strategic plans.
C. Attractive but unnecessary things. D. Small but important tools.
11. What can we expect from Rita according to Allen?
A. It will hit the service industry. B. It will help speed up robotic research.
C. It will become more customer-friendly. D. It will promote the service quality with employees.
D
Have you ever bought anything useful for the useless item you bought earlier? This cycle just goes on and on, and you will end up with tons of useless stuff. This is a phenomenon we call The Birdcage Effect.
You don’t feel like having a pet animal. One day, your friend sends you a birdcage as your birthday present, telling you to put it on your table. Of course, you agreed. Then multiple people pass by asking you where the pet bird is. After you answer no, people suggest you get one for the birdcage. Finally, you buy one bird, then bird treats, toys, and even clothes. You keep adding more items to the bird’s bill. Is there anything wrong?
As the name suggested — the birdcage effect holds back people’s ability to think from the outside of a birdcage. You buy a pet bird — which you never thought about having — because of the birdcage. This effect is mainly caused by you voluntarily assuming that the birdcage is part of your table; it acts as one of the conditions instead of a variable — which it is supposed to be. Therefore, you will end up spending the necessary money on something unnecessary. For example, buy 1 get 1 for free — the discount caged you so that you are getting something excess that is unneeded.
Now, it comes to how to avoid the birdcage effect. First, we need to be result-oriented: when dealing with a birdcage, telling yourself to consider the result before stepping on the path is a wise approach. Moreover, it’s significant to remember that less is typically better than more. When given a “birdcage”, throwing away the birdcage may seem ignorant and wasteful; however, it will stop you from getting a bird —or in other words, wasting more money on unnecessary things.
The birdcage effect is difficult to get rid of. However it can be prevented if we properly control our unreasonable needs. Do not let an object lead your action, but let your logical mind guide your decision.
12. Which is The Birdcage Effect as described in the passage?
A. Buy flowers for an unwanted vase. B. Behave better with others’ praise.
C. Get a birdcage for your bird pet. D. Throw a birdcage to avoid waste.
13. What do we know about The Birdcage Effect from paragraph 3?
A. It leads to the gathering of something necessary.
B. It limits our ability to understand outside the box.
C. It encourages us to consider the birdcage as a variable.
D. It helps us save money by spending on discounted goods.
14. Which of the following may the author agree?
A. Keep everything and avoid waste.
B. Ignore outcomes and always buy more.
C. Consider the discount and add more to the bill.
D. Free yourself from ill-suited items and simplify life.
15. What message does the passage mainly convey?
A. Get rid of our desires at all times. B. Allow an object to control our choices.
C. Make logical and result-driven decisions. D. Make good use of The Birdcage Effect in our life.
It’s a fantastic idea to reread novels. ___16___ For a while, I saw little point in rereading. Why reread a favourite when there are other books waiting for you? Most book lovers have long books waiting to be read. It seems a waste of time to reread a novel. The aspect of time is an important point for readers — a novel simply is not a poem, short story or movie.
___17___ For one, the purpose of reading changes. You are no longer familiarising yourself with the plot, characters or setting. These narrative points were made clear in the first read. Rather, the second and third reading allows greater focus on the theme, literary references, style and the more subtle (细微的) aspects of the novel. This makes for a more enjoyable read. In many ways, a novel is like an endless treasure chest of pirate gold. ___18___
Another delightful part of rereading is the lack of need to “understand” a novel. You’ve already read it and can now determine the extent of your enjoyment. However, there’s a possibility of disliking a novel at second glance. There’s nothing wrong with this! ___19___ It’s through rereading that we develop an understanding of our tastes.
I’m not suggesting that rereading is superior to (优于) reading novels for the first time. Yet, it’s worth arranging time for two or three novels a year. You shouldn’t reread any book. Rather, pick a favourite to start with, preferably a story you read over a year ago. ___20___ It’s entirely possible not to enjoy a novel at first but go on to appreciate it at a different stage in your life.
Either way — keep reading.
A. Our tastes and preferences change.
B. However, it wasn’t something I often did.
C. Yet plots, characters and settings still matter.
D. Still, I must mention the benefits of rereading.
E I prefer the latter even though the enjoyment is less.
F. Or, pick a novel you are having second thoughts about.
G. You’ll always find something previously undiscovered.

Mia had always been a shy and reserved girl, finding comfort in the shadows rather than the spotlight. Throughout her school years, she struggled with public speaking, often feeling her heart race and her palms sweat at the me re thought of standing in front of a crowd. This fear held her back in many ways, making her pass up opportunities that came her way, from leading class projects to participating in school debates. Her classmates saw her as the quiet girl in the back row, the one who always had her nose in a book, but seldom raised her hand to answer questions.
During her final year of high school, Mia’s English teacher, Mr. Thompson, announced the annual speech competition. The theme was “Overcoming Challenges,” and it was a significant part of the grade. Mia felt a familiar wave of anxiety wash over her. However, this time, something within her stirred. She was tired of letting her fears define her experiences and limit her growth. It was a spark that inspired her determination to change her life.
With a newfound determination, Mia decided to face her fear head-on. She chose a topic close to her heart: “The Power of Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone.” Preparing for the speech became her mission. She researched extensively, wrote and rewrote her speech multiple times, and practiced in front of her mirror, then her family, and gradually, a small group of friends. Each step was a challenge, pushing her beyond the familiar boundaries of her comfort zone. Her friends and family noticed the change in her, the gradual increase in confidence that came with each practice session.
The day of the competition arrived, and as Mia waited for her turn, she could feel the familiar symptoms of her anxiety creeping in. But she reminded herself of the journey she had gone through, the effort she had put in, and the support she had received. She realized that regardless of the outcome, she had already overcome the biggest challenge by facing her fear directly. This realization brought a sense of calm over her, a quiet confidence that she had never felt before.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Mia stepped onto the stage.

B 5. D 6. A 7. C

由文章第一段中“It took a wave of water full of plastic crashing over Babacar Thiaw as he went out to sea for him to decide to act. (当Babacar Thiaw出海时,一股充满塑料的海浪拍打着他,他才决定采取行动。)”可知,是海中的塑料景象让他决定做出改变。故选B。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“Within a year he had turned Copacabana Surf Village, which he founded with his father two decades ago, into a center for young Senegalese eco-surfers, where he organizes beach cleans, environmental courses for children and runs Senegal’s first zero-waste restaurant. (在一年之内,他就把Copacabana Surf Village变成了塞内加尔年轻生态冲浪者的中心,他在那里组织海滩清洁,为儿童举办环保课程,并经营塞内加尔第一家零浪费餐厅。)”和第四段中“It is now a popular surfing location, attracting tourists. It’s also a place where Thiaw teaches young Senegalese how to surf and care for the ocean they spend so much time in. (现在它是一个受欢迎的冲浪地点,吸引着游客。Thiaw也在这里教塞内加尔的年轻人如何冲浪,以及如何照顾他们花了很多时间在里面的海洋。)”可知,他努力传播环保理念,努力争取公众的支持。故选D。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段““When we come to the water to surf, we can see how much plastic is ending up here and it disturbs (使烦恼) us,” says Mohammed Sarr, 17, who Thiaw taught to surf. Sarr says he has become more aware of how he uses and deals with plastic because he and his family, who live near the sea, are directly affected. (17岁的Mohammed Sarr说:“当我们来到水里冲浪时,我们可以看到有多少塑料最终落在这里,这让我们感到不安。”Sarr说,他越来越意识到他是如何使用和处理塑料的,因为他和他的家人住在海边,直接受到影响。)”可知,Thiaw对Sarr产生了积极影响,让他更加意识到塑料使用和处理的问题。因此,提到Sarr是为了展示Thiaw对他的影响。故选A。
由文章最后一段“Thiaw says there was doubt about the plastic-free initiative (倡议), with diners questioning whether it was healthy for him to be serving water in reusable glass bottles. But he stresses that everyone needs to understand the requirement to change .“ Once the environment is getting worse, you and your family and friends will surely suffer,” he says. (Thiaw说,人们对无塑料倡议持怀疑态度,食客们质疑他用可重复使用的玻璃瓶盛水是否健康。但他强调,每个人都需要理解改变的必要性,他说:“一旦环境变得更糟,你和你的家人和朋友肯定会遭殃。”)”可知,Thiaw希望人们能理解改变的必要性,因为环境恶化会影响到每一个人。可以推断Thiaw期望餐厅顾客能为环境保护尽自己的一份力。故选C。

D 9. C 10. C 11. D

根据第一段“Rita, created by Bear Robotics, can act as a sort of server, guiding guests to their tables, carrying food, even singing “Happy Birthday””(由 Bear Robotics 创造的Rita可以充当某种服务员,引导客人到他们的桌子,携带食物,甚至唱“生日快乐”。)
根据第三段“Chili’s growth shows the restaurant industry is confident in Rita’s early performance, particularly in utilization (使用) and error rates. Allen said Rita produced “great utilization rates”, based on whether employees (员工) were using and communicating with the technology.”(Chili 的增长表明,餐饮业对 Rita 的早期表现充满信心,特别是在利用率和错误率方面。
根据划线部分下文“And, indeed, there is a risk here as most customers have said they prefer to communicate with human workers even as this type of guest-facing technology increases.”(而且,事实上,这里存在风险,因为大多数客户表示,即使这种面向客人的技术增加,他们也更喜欢与人类员工交流。)
根据最后一段中“My goal is to make our employees’ jobs easier, and I absolutely think robotics is a service progress. The future is a world where we still have amazing service, but we can simplify and automate some of the difficult and unnecessary tasks”(我的目标是让我们员工的工作更轻松,我绝对认为机器人技术是一种服务进步。

However, it can be prevented if we properly control our unreasonable needs.
A 13. B 14. D 15. C

根据第一段“Have you ever bought anything useful for the useless item you bought earlier? This cycle just goes on and on, and you will end up with tons of useless stuff. This is a phenomenon we call The Birdcage Effect. (你有没有为之前买的没用的东西买过有用的东西?这样循环往复,最终你会得到大量无用的东西。这种现象我们称之为“鸟笼效应”)”可知,“鸟笼效应”指的是为没用的东西买有用的东西,最终得到大量无用的东西的现象,结合选项可知,“为不想要的花瓶买花”属于“鸟笼效应”。故选A项。
根据第三段中“As the name suggested — the birdcage effect holds back people’s ability to think from the outside of a birdcage. You buy a pet bird — which you never thought about having — because of the birdcage. This effect is mainly caused by you voluntarily assuming that the birdcage is part of your table; it acts as one of the conditions instead of a variable — which it is supposed to be. (顾名思义,鸟笼效应阻碍了人们从鸟笼外面思考的能力。你买了一只宠物鸟——这是你从未想过的——因为鸟笼。这种效果主要是由于你自愿地把鸟笼当成你桌子的一部分;它作为一个条件,而不是一个变量——它应该是一个变量)”可知,“鸟笼效应”限制了我们跳出固有思维去理解的能力。故选B项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“Moreover, it’s significant to remember that less is typically better than more. When given a “birdcage”, throwing away the birdcage may seem ignorant and wasteful; however, it will stop you from getting a bird —or in other words, wasting more money on unnecessary things. (此外,重要的是要记住,少通常比多好。当有人给你一个“鸟笼”时,扔掉鸟笼可能显得无知和浪费;然而,它会阻止你得到一只鸟,或者换句话说,在不必要的东西上浪费更多的钱)”可知,作者认为少优于多,扔掉鸟笼可以阻止我们购买不必要的东西。因此,作者应该会赞同“把自己从不合适的物品中解放出来,简化生活”的观点。故选D项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第四段中“First, we need to be result-oriented: when dealing with a birdcage, telling yourself to consider the result before stepping on the path is a wise approach. (首先,我们需要以结果为导向:在处理鸟笼时,告诉自己在踏上道路之前考虑结果是一个明智的方法)”和最后一段中“Do not let an object lead your action, but let your logical mind guide your decision. (不要让一个事物引导你的行动,而要让你的逻辑思维引导你的决定)”可知,文章围绕“鸟笼效应”展开,为读者介绍了其含义、弊端以及相应的解决方法,想告诫读者应预防这种效应,尽量做出合乎逻辑的、结果导向的决定。故选C项。

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
E. I prefer the latter even though the enjoyment is less.

She had done it! She had faced her fear and delivered a powerful message to herself and others.

When they called out Mia's name as the first-place winner, she could hardly believe her ears. The applause from the audience was deafening, and her classmates rushed to congratulate her. Mr. Thompson beamed with pride, knowing that he had witnessed a true transformation in one of his students.
