As a child, I was really afraid of the dark and of getting lost. These fears were very real and caused me some uncomfortable moments.
Maybe it was the strange way things looked and sounded in my own room at night that scared me so much. There was never complete darkness, but always a streetlight or passing car lights, which made clothes on the back of a chair take on the shape of a wild animal. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the curtains(窗帘)seem to move when there was no wind. A very low sound in the floor would seem a hundred times louder than in the day. My imagination(想象)would lie very still so that the “enemy(敌人)” would not discover me.
Another of my childhood fears was that I would get lost, especially on the way home from school. Every morning I got on the school bus right near my home. That was no problem. After school, though, when all the buses were lined up along the street, I was afraid that I would get on the wrong one and be taken to some other strange places. On school or family trips to a park or a museum, I wouldn’t let the leaders out of my sight.
Perhaps one of the worst fears of all I had as a child was that of not being liked or accepted by others. Being popular was so important to me then, and the fear of not being liked was a serious one.
One of the processes(过程)of growing up is being able to realize and overcome our fears. Understanding the things that scared us as children helps us achieve greater success later in life.

I was always busy learning how to do new things.
My clothes were old and full of holes, so I made some new ones from animal skins. My new suit (套装) looked very strange, but it kept me dry.
In my sixth year, I made a small canoe (独木舟) because I wanted to sail (航行) around the island. The trip took longer and was more difficult than I thought. When I got to the other side of the island, I was very tired. I decided to stop and rest before going home. While I was lying on the beach, I was almost asleep when I suddenly heard a voice behind me. “Robinson Crusoe! Poor Robinson! Where are you?”
At first, I thought I was dreaming. I opened my eyes and looked round. What a surprise I had! My pet Poll was sitting on the branch(树枝) of a tree!
“Poll!” I said. “How did you get here?”
I held out my arm and he came and sat on it. He was very happy to see me.
I wanted to catch some of the goats on the island and keep them for meat and milk. There were a lot of them, but they always ran away when they saw me and Poll. I thought for a long time about how to do it. Then one day I had an idea.
I made some big holes on the ground and covered them with branches. When I went back there the following day, I found several goats in the holes. I took them home and kept them near my house. At first, they were terrified and they didn't let me take milk from them. But I gave them food and fresh water every day and soon they stopped being afraid of me.

To many students, joining social media “circles”(社交圈) is now more important than making new friends in real life. And it’s easy. If you have a mobile phone, you can download many Apps such as Weibo, QQ and WeChat.
“I love to check my friends’ updates(更新). I also enjoy news and jokes shared on social media,” said Wang Wei, a 14-year-old student. While enjoying these, Wang distances himself from real life. “I love playing the plane-shooting game on WeChat, but have no interest in playing chess with my classmates,” said Wang.
Deng Yunyun, 14, said that social media has influenced their normal life. Last month, his school held a basketball match, and a student hurt his leg instead of giving him some help, students were busy updating their blogs about the accident. “I think they need to balance (平衡) their real and online lives, and what worries parents and teachers a lot is safety,” said Deng.
“Many students are happy to tell their interests and personal information to their social media ‘friends’. And this could bring them danger,” said Miss Wang, a teacher from Shenzhen. “For example, WeChat’s shake-shake function allows users to connect to other users nearby.” Also the police warn about the risks of making friends in this way.
When enjoying so much fun on social media, we still need to keep safety in our mind.

C. Because he didn’t belong to their social media “circles”.
D. Because there were few students there at that moment.
64. The underlined word “this” refers to “_______”.
A. WeChat’s shake-shake function
B. having no interest in playing chess with friends
C. caring too much about their social media “circles”

The smile was so beautiful that he wanted to see it again, so he gave her a Coke. 67 The boy was very happy.
They sat there all the afternoon, eating and smiling, but they said nothing. 68 But before he had gone more than a few steps, he turned around, ran back to the old woman and gave her a hug. 69

As a child, I was really afraid of the dark and of getting lost. These fears were very real and
caused me some uncomfortable moments.
Maybe it was the strange way things looked and sounded in my own room at night that scared
me so much. There was never complete darkness, but always a streetlight or passing car lights,
which made clothes on the back of a chair take on the shape of a wild animal. Out of the corner of
my eye, I saw the curtains(窗帘)seem to move when there was no wind. A very low sound in the
floor would seem a hundred times louder than in the day. My imagination(想象)would lie very still
so that the “enemy(敌人)” would not discover me.
Another of my childhood fears was that I would get lost, especially on the way home from
school. Every morning I got on the school bus right near my home. That was no problem. After
school, though, when all the buses were lined up along the street, I was afraid that I would get on
the wrong one and be taken to some other strange places. On school or family trips to a park or a
museum, I wouldn’t let the leaders out of my sight.
Perhaps one of the worst fears of all I had as a child was that of not being liked or accepted by
others. Being popular was so important to me then, and the fear of not being liked was a serious
one.
One of the processes(过程)of growing up is being able to realize and overcome our fears.
Understanding the things that scared us as children helps us achieve greater success later in life.

I was always busy learning how to do new things.
My clothes were old and full of holes, so I made some new ones from animal skins. My new
suit (套装) looked very strange, but it kept me dry.
In my sixth year, I made a small canoe (独木舟) because I wanted to sail (航行) around the
island. The trip took longer and was more difficult than I thought. When I got to the other side of
the island, I was very tired. I decided to stop and rest before going home. While I was lying on the
beach, I was almost asleep when I suddenly heard a voice behind me. “Robinson Crusoe! Poor
Robinson!
There were
a lot of them, but they always ran away when they saw me and Poll. I thought for a long time about
how to do it. Then one day I had an idea.
I made some big holes on the ground and covered them with branches. When I went back there
the following day, I found several goats in the holes. I took them home and kept them near my
house. At first, they were terrified and they didn't let me take milk from them. But I gave them
food and fresh water every day and soon they stopped being afraid of me.

To many students, joining social media “circles”(社交圈) is now more important than making
new friends in real life. And it’s easy. If you have a mobile phone, you can download many Apps
such as Weibo, QQ and WeChat.
“I love to check my friends’ updates(更新). I also enjoy news and jokes shared on social media,”
said Wang Wei, a 14-year-old student. While enjoying these, Wang distances himself from real life.
“I love playing the plane-shooting game on WeChat, but have no interest in playing chess with my
classmates,” said Wang.

school held a basketball match, and a student hurt his leg instead of giving him some help, students
were busy updating their blogs about the accident. “I think they need to balance (平衡) their real
and online lives, and what worries parents and teachers a lot is safety,” said Deng.
“Many students are happy to tell their interests and personal information to their social media
‘friends’. And this could bring them danger,” said Miss Wang, a teacher from Shenzhen. “For
example, WeChat’s shake-shake function allows users to connect to other users nearby.” Also the
police warn about the risks of making friends in this way.
When enjoying so much fun on social media, we still need to keep safety in our mind.

Where is Love? How can we find Love?
Once a little boy wanted to meet Love. He knew it was a long trip to find where Love lived, so
he got his things ready with some pizzas and drinks and started off. When he passed three streets, he
saw an old woman sitting in the park and watching some birds. 66 The boy gave her a
pizza. She took it and smiled at him. The smile was so beautiful that he wanted to see it again, so he
gave her a Coke. 67 The boy was very happy.
They sat there all the afternoon, eating and smiling, but they said nothing. 68 But
before he had gone more than a few steps, he turned around, ran back to the old woman and gave
her a hug. 69
When the boy opened the door of his house, his mother was surprised by the look of joy on face
and asked what had made him so happy. “ 70 She has got the most beautiful smile in the
world.” At the same time, the old woman’s son was also surprised at his mother’s pleasure and
asked why.
“I ate a pizza in the park with Love,” she said, “and he is much younger than I expected.”
If the world is full of love, we can enjoy a better life.
