B I walked to Mrs. Windsor’s house as I always did when I heard the piano. Before ringing the bell, I stood against the wall and sighed (叹息) sadly. I had been taught enough to read, understand, and even write some musical pieces, but I just didn’t have a gift for it. But Mrs. Windsor had offered to give me the lesson for free, so I felt it my duty to try. The door opened. Today Mrs. Windsor introduced her niece Pasha to teach me. With a smile, Pasha sat beside me on the piano bench. Then I frowned (皱眉) and concentrated to make the notes on the page match finger movements. I have to admit (承认) I played the piano without much thinking, just like a robot. I considered myself a mechanical pianist. After about a page or two, Pasha gently put her hand on top of mine as if to calm my fingers. “Jennifer, what are you hearing in the music?” I looked at her rather strangely and admitted I didn’t know what she meant. “Here, let me try and you listen,” Pasha advised. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, letting her fingers dance lightly over the keys. Then, she began to play. “See, it begins here beside some kind of river. Hear the water running beside you?” Her fingers rose and fell gently on the keys. “Now the princess appears and she’s picking flowers from the water’s edge.” A happy piece of music filled the air in time to Pasha’s dancing fingers. “Oh, but she falls over!” The music changed. “And our princess is being carried off by the fast-flowing stream. Quickly, her horse sees the trouble,” Pasha continued, “and races to the river’s edge where he swims out to let her catch hold of him. They make it to the bank and she hugs her faithful horse and promises she will never again wear princess skirts that weigh her down. She will only wear jeans and T-shirts from now on.” Pasha finished with a big smile and then looked at me. I was happy and advised to try another one. Pasha smiled and together we played that afternoon, finding the story in the music and learning that sometimes it takes a friend to pull you out of the river onto dry land again. 24.What did the author mean by describing herself as a mechanical pianist? A.Her fingers could move freely and gently. B.She was playing the piano without feelings. C.She could remember the notes in a short time. D.It has been a long time since she played last time. 25.Which of the following can best describe Pasha? A.Skilled and patient. B.Smart and strict. C.Funny and practical. D.Brave and optimistic. 26.What is the secret of Pasha’s playing the piano? A.She imagined herself as a princess. B.She wanted to become a great musician. C.She had a strong wish to make friends. D.She connected the music with a story. 27.Which can be a suitable title for the text? A.A Friend Forever. B.A Story of Music. C.The Magical Piano Lesson. D.My Favorite Piece of Music. C Shortly after its opening on the first day of Chinese New Year, The Wandering Earth began to gain momentum In a little over a week, it made 2.8 billion yuan in the domestic market alone. The film’s popularity and success has come as a surprise to many reviewers especially since there hasn’t been that much success for Chinese-produced science fiction in the past. Many agree that this film will change the embarrassing situation and bring in a new age for Chinese science fiction. As a genre (类型), Chinese science fiction has lagged behind general fiction in both the film and publishing industries. Even Liu Cixin’s (the author who wrote the short story on which The Wandering Earth is based) The Three Body Problem —which is currently quite popular — didn’t have many readers until it was translated into English and won the Hugo Award (雨果奖) in 2015. Personally, I haven’t read much of any genre written in Chinese, but I do notice that there aren’t many separate sections of the bookstore dedicated to science fiction. I cannot speak for everyone, but some people seem to have misunderstandings regarding the genre. My parents were the type who tried to steer me in the direction of non-fiction and the classics. They believed that science fiction and fantasy were “unrealistic nonsense” and would “rot my brain.” Actually, great science fiction writers do their research. More often than not, one can learn a great deal about science and its possible development from reading science fiction. Sure, some of the concepts may be confusing or technical in nature, but that is also part of the appeal. Things like the internet, electric cars and tablet computers were first theorized (建立理论) in science fiction before they were invented. The author simply uses a combination of science and their imagination to create worlds different from the Earth of today, from which we can get bits and pieces that can be turned into a reality. The world is changing. There may very well be a time when Earth is no longer able to sustain the entire population. We could be living on Mars or in giant spaceships; perhaps we will be forced to move Earth to a new solar system just like The Wandering Earth. Each of these scenarios has appeared in science fiction multiple times. If we are to be prepared for what is to come, we can look into modern science fiction for a window into the future. 28.According to the article, which of the following statements about The Wandering Earth is NOT true? A.Critics did not expect too much of the film before its release. B.It is the first time that Chinese science fiction has succeed in the film industry. C.The film was adapted from a short story in Liu Cixin’s The Three Body Problem. D.In the future we might be faced with similar crises to the one described in the movie. 29.We can learn from the article that the author ________. A.has little interest in science fiction B.has never read Chinese science fiction C.was not allowed to read science fiction by his parents D.has not been prepared for the future development of science and technology. 30.Paragraph 3 mainly focuses on ________. A.the practical significance of science fiction B.real technologies inspired by science fiction C.people’s misunderstandings about science fiction D.imaginary worlds created by science fiction writers 31.What does the underlined word “scenarios” in the last paragraph probably mean? A.strategies B.proposals C.ideas D.pictures D The Australian sand octopus (章鱼) was discovered in 1990 and is the only octopus species known to bury itself deep in the sand to hide from enemies. A team of researchers are studying the venom (毒液) of this kind of octopus. They have discovered that the venom may greatly slow cancer growth. And it can also help fight drug resistance in patients with a BRAF-changed skin cancer. BRAF is involved in managing cell growth. A change in it results in abnormal cell growth. These BRAF changes are seen in half of all cases of skin cancers. “We and other groups have previously discovered that other animals-snakes, spiders, bees-have anticancer properties,” said Dr. Maria, the study’s lead author. “However, in my current knowledge, the anticancer properties of an octopus species have never been studied or confirmed before.” Current treatments face a few challenges including low response rates, poisoning and side effects, as well as drug resistance. The octopus venom slows the growth of BRAF-changed skin cancer. More importantly, it is safe to be used in large quantities — it is not poisonous. Therefore, in combination with other drugs, the treatments could potentially achieve better and safer patient outcomes. It is very unlikely that the octopus has specifically developed its venom to contain an anticancer substance. According to the researching team, the octopus venom contains over 1,000 unique substances with several functions such as reducing pain and anticancer. “In this study, we have shown that the octopus venom specifically targets BRAF-changed skin cancer. The next step is to examine whether similar promising results are applicable for other BRAF-changed cancers.” said Dr. Maria. “Before it can be used on patients, the team will need to perform several rounds of lab testing and clinical trials to understand how it works and its full potential as a drug against skin cancer.” 32.What can we know about BRAF? A.It is a change in cells. B.It controls cell growth. C.It can cause a deadly illness. D.It helps to cure a skin cancer. 33.What discovery did the team make? A.A medicine to cure cancers. B.A substance contained in animals. C.The medical value of octopus species. D.The anticancer effect of an octopus venom. 34.What is an advantage of the octopus venom to treat the skin cancer? A.It is of large quantity. B.It has no side effects. C.It is less expensive. D.It has lower risks. 35.What can we infer from the last paragraph concerning the octopus venom? A.Its application requires further work. B.It helps treat BRAF-changed cancers. C.Its safety needs more clinical testings. D.It has already been put into wide use. How to Remember What You Read Reading is important. Here are a few tricks for remembering what you read. ●Are you confused? If the plot, characters, or word usage is confusing for you, you likely won’t be able to remember what you read. 37 If you don’t understand what you’re reading, how would you remember it? My friend was the queen of back handsprings, so she helped me understand each and every step. Our coach pulled out a handspring machine to help the kids who were learning how to do them for the first time. This machine is a block that has cushion(垫子) all around it. You basically sit in the mouth of the machine and push off with your feet and go backwards until you land on your hands, then feet. Do we have enough energy sources to meet our future energy needs? These are two of the most important questions in the modern world, and many people are trying to find the answers. Some people think that we might be able to solve both problems at the same time. They suggest that garbage should be used as an energy source. For example, some cities in the United States have been burning garbage to create fuel for years. But studies have shown that it is not a good idea. Burning garbage for energy causes many serious problems. Garbage that burns easily, such as plastics and paper, must be separated from metals, glass and other materials that do not burn easily. Another huge problem with burning garbage is air pollution. 根据Delhi部分中的“Delhi is a perfect place for those who love history, and there are plenty of attractions here to keep tourists of all interests entertained.(Delhi是历史爱好者的好去处,这里有很多景点,让所有兴趣的游客都能得到娱乐)”可知,从文章中我们了解到Delhi对历史爱好者很有吸引力。故选C。 22. 根据Kashmir部分中的“Kashmir is especially popular with honeymooners and loved-up couples, because a lot of romantic trips are on sale in Kashmir.(Kashmir特别受蜜月者和情侣的欢迎,因为Kashmir有很多浪漫的旅行)”可知,Kashmir特殊的地方是它提供许多吸引情侣的旅游。故选C。 23. 根据Goa部分中的“Though Goa is small in size, it’s one of the top resorts for young tourists and those who love taking beach vacations.(虽然Goa面积很小,但它是年轻游客和喜欢海滩度假的人的首选度假胜地之一)”可知,如果我们想在海边度过几天,我们应该去Goa。 根据文章第二段“I have to admit (承认) I played the piano without much thinking, just like a robot. I considered myself a mechanical pianist.(我得承认,我弹钢琴时没有想太多,就像个机器人。我认为自己是一个机械钢琴家。)”可知,作者把自己描述成一个机械钢琴家的意思是她毫无感情地弹钢琴。故选B项。 25.推理判断题。根据文章文章第三段“After about a page or two, Pasha gently put her hand on top of mine as if to calm my fingers.(读了一两页后,帕夏轻轻地把手放在我的手上,好像要让我的手指平静下来。)”和第七段“Her fingers rose and fell gently on the keys.(她的手指轻轻地在琴键上起落。)”和“A happy piece of music filled the air in time to Pasha’s dancing fingers.(空中回荡着欢快的乐曲,帕夏手舞足蹈。)” 故选A项。 26. 根据文章倒数第二段的描述和最后一段“Pasha smiled and together we played that afternoon, finding the story in the music and learning that sometimes it takes a friend to pull you out of the river onto dry land again.(那天下午,帕夏笑了笑,我们一起弹奏,从音乐中找到了故事,也明白了有时需要朋友把你从河里拉出来,重新回到陆地上。)” 根据第二段中的“Even Liu Cixin’s (the author who wrote the short story on which The Wandering Earth is based) The Three Body Problem — which is currently quite popular — didn’t have many readers until it was translated into English and won the Hugo Award in 2015. (即使是刘慈欣(《流浪地球》的原著作者)的《三体》——现在很受欢迎——在被翻译成英文并于2015年获得雨果奖之前也没有多少读者。)”可知,科幻小说《流浪的地球》和《三体》都是刘慈欣写的,并不是说《流浪的地球》这部电影改编自刘慈欣的短篇小说《三体》,故选C项。 29.推理判断题。根据第三段中的“My parents were the type who tried to steer me in the direction of non-fiction and the classics. They believed that science fiction and fantasy were “unrealistic nonsense” and would “rot my brain.” (我的父母是那种试图引导我读非小说类和古典文学的人。他们认为科幻小说和幻想是“不切实际的废话”,会“腐蚀我的大脑”。)”可知,作者的父母认为科幻小说和幻想是不切实际的胡言乱语,会腐蚀作者的大脑,由此可知,作者的父母不允许他读科幻小说,故选C项。 30.主旨大意题。根据第三段内容,特别是“Actually, great science fiction writers do their research. More often than not, one can learn a great deal about science and its possible development from reading science fiction. (事实上,伟大的科幻作家都会做研究。通常情况下,人们可以从阅读科幻小说中学到很多关于科学及其可能发展的知识。)”也就是说科幻小说对人们的现实生活是有影响的,由此可知,本段主要介绍的是科幻小说的现实意义,故选A项。 31.词句猜测题。根据上文“The world is changing. There may very well be a time when Earth is no longer able to sustain the entire population. We could be living on Mars or in giant spaceships; perhaps we will be forced to move Earth to a new solar system just like The Wandering Earth. 根据文章第一段“And it can also help fight drug resistance in patients with a BRAF-changed skin cancer. BRAF is involved in managing cell growth. A change in it results in abnormal cell growth. These BRAF changes are seen in half of all cases of skin cancers.(它还可以帮助对抗BRAF改变的皮肤癌患者的耐药性。BRAF参与控制细胞生长。它的变化会导致细胞的异常生长。这些BRAF变化在一半的皮肤癌病例中可见)”可知, BRAF控制细胞生长。故选B项。 33.细节理解题。根据文章第一段“They have discovered that the venom may greatly slow cancer growth. And it can also help fight drug resistance in patients with a BRAF-changed skin cancer.(他们发现这种毒液可以大大减缓癌症的生长。它还可以帮助对抗BRAF改变的皮肤癌患者的耐药性)”及第二段““We and other groups have previously discovered that other animals-snakes, spiders, bees-have anticancer properties,” said Dr. Maria, the study’s lead author. “However, in my current knowledge, the anticancer properties of an octopus species have never been studied or confirmed before.”(该研究的主要作者玛丽亚博士说:“我们和其他研究小组此前已经发现,蛇、蜘蛛、蜜蜂等其他动物也具有抗癌特性。然而,据我目前所知,章鱼的抗癌特性以前从未被研究或证实过。”)”可知,团队发现了章鱼毒液的抗癌作用。故选D项。 34.细节理解题。根据文章第三段“More importantly, it is safe to be used in large quantities-it is not poisonous. Therefore, in combination with other drugs, the treatments could potentially achieve better and safer patient outcomes.(更重要的是,大量使用是安全的——它是无毒的。因此,与其他药物联合使用,这些治疗方法可能会获得更好、更安全的患者结果)”可知,章鱼毒液治疗皮肤癌的优势在于它具有较低的风险。故选D项。 35.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Before it can be used on patients, the team will need to perform several rounds of lab testing and clinical trials to understand how it works and its full potential as a drug against skin cancer.(在将其用于患者之前,该团队将需要进行几轮实验室测试和临床试验,以了解其工作原理及其作为治疗皮肤癌药物的全部潜力)”可知,章鱼毒液的应用需要进一步的工作。故选A项。 36.根据下文“You may have just read the text, but the ideas, concepts and images (形象) may fly right out of your head. (这种感觉就像是在读外语)”符合题意,选项中的it指代上文内容。故选A。 38. 根据下文“Does a character remind you of a friend? Does the setting make you want to visit the place? Does the book inspire you, and make you want to read more? With some books, you may feel a connection right away.  (角色会让你想起朋友吗?那里的环境是否让你想去参观那个地方?这本书是否激励了你,让你想读更多的书?读一些书,你可能会马上感觉到一种联系)”可知,本段主要提供我们是否把自己和书中的人物、情节或环境联系起来。G项“Are you connected? (你联系了吗?)”可以作为小标题,connected呼应下文的connection。故选G。 39.空处位于段末应承接上文。根据上文“When he was writing his novels, Charles Dickens would act out the parts of the characters. He’d make faces in the mirror, and change his voice for each character.  (查尔斯·狄更斯在写小说时,会把人物的各个部分表演出来。他会对着镜子做鬼脸,为每个角色换声音)”结合本段小标题“● Read it; hear it; be it! (阅读它;倾听它;成为它!)”推知,我们也可以像狄更斯一样,把阅读到的角色表演出来。F项“You can do the same thing when you are reading the text! (你在阅读文本的时候也可以这样做!)”符合题意。故选F。 40.根据上文“If you read frequently, you’ll likely have an easier time with remembering what you’re reading and what you’ve read. (如果你经常阅读,你可能会更容易记住你正在阅读和读过的内容)”可知,经常阅读更有可能会记得读过的内容。由此可知,熟能生巧。C项“Practice makes perfect. (熟能生巧)”符合题意。故选C。 41.C 42.B 43.B 44.D 45.C 46.A 47.B 48.D 49.C 50.A 51.D 52.A 53.C 54.A 55.D 【导语】这是一篇夹叙夹议的文章。 A. tore撕碎;B. made制作;C. boarded用木板盖上;D. packed打包。根据上句“a neighbor kid kicked a football and broke a basement window of my house. And so, with her help and my own determination, I kept trying again and again. I practised every day after school, and even on weekends, if I had time, I would try to practise what my friend had shown me. One day, I finally got it right.
