Mr. Lang worked in a factory. As a driver, he was busy but his hard work was rewarding since he was well paid. His wife was an able woman and did all the housework. Therefore, he was so interested in it that he almost forgot anything except gambling. He lost all his money and later he began to sell the television, watches and so on. His wife told him not to do it but he didn’t listen to her. She could do nothing but call the police. He and his friends were punished for it. After he came out of lockup, his wife asked him to kick the habit of gambling and earn an honest income. However, the man set aside what she said and his wife had no choice but to leave the family.
It was New Year’s Day. Mr. Lang didn’t go to work. He felt lonely and wanted to gamble again. He called his friends and they came soon. But they were afraid the police would come. He told his five-year-old son to go to find out if there were the policemen outside. They waited for a long time and didn’t think the police would come and began to gamble. The world has about 7,000 languages. Experts predict that as many as half of these may be at risk of disappearing by the end of this century. That would mean a language dies out every two weeks.
Members of the Siletz Indian tribe (部落) in the northwestern state of Oregon take pride in their language. Their language, they say, “is as old as time itself”. But today very few people can speak it fluently. In fact, you can count the number of fluent speakers on one hand.
More than 10,000 words can be found in the Siletz Online Talking Dictionary. Professor Harrison has also posted talking dictionaries for seven other highly endangered (濒危的) languages from around the world. He says technology can not only spread the influence of major languages but also help save endangered ones. Smartphone applications, YouTube videos and Facebook pages have all become digital tools for language experts.
Mr Harrison and a researcher in Oregon have mapped areas of endangered languages. One is the Pacific Northwest in the United States. Others include the upper Amazon basin, Siberia and northern Australia.
In Canada’s far north, the Inuit people are struggling to protect their native language, Inuktitut. Part of the effort involves (涉及) Microsoft. The company is translating terms in its Windows operating system and Office software into Inuktitut.
Nowadays so many people will spend their whole day sitting in front of a computer. If you’re sitting in front of your computer in English all day, that just reinforces(强化)English. If you’re now using Inuktitut, it is reinforcing that this is your language. Microsoft has also worked with language experts in New Zealand, Spain and Wales to translate its software into Maori, Basque, Catalan and Welsh.
28. Why are the people of the Siletz Indian tribe proud of their language?
A. It’s easily mastered. B. It’s widely spoken nowadays.
C. It has a long history. D. It has scientific value.
29 What does Harrison think of technology according to Paragraph 3?
A. It changes the way young people learn a language.
B. It makes learning a language a fashionable thing.
C. It makes it possible to master a language quickly.
D. It helps protect the endangered languages.
30. Why does Microsoft translate its software into Inuktitut?
A. To make Inuktitut spoken worldwide. B. To learn other languages conveniently.
C. To help spread the use of Microsoft software. D. To strengthen the use of Inuktitut.
31A. What is the text mainly about?
A. The effects of modern technology on languages.
B. Efforts made to save languages in danger of dying out.
C. Some languages with the most speakers worldwide.
D. The difference Harrison made to the Siletz Indian tribe.

British anthropologists(人类学家)Russell Hill and Robert Barton of the University of Durham, after studying the results of one-on-one boxing, tae kwon do, Greco-Roman wrestling and freestyle wrestling matches at the Olympic Games, conclude that when two competitors are equally matched in fitness and skill, the athlete wearing red is more likely to win.
Hill and Barton report that when one competitor is much better than the other, colour has no effect on the result. However, when there is only a small difference between them, the effect of colour is enough to tip the balance. The anthropologists say that:the number of times red wins.is not simply by chance, but that these results are statistically significant.
Joanna Setchell,a primate(灵长目动物)researcher at the University of Cambridge, has found similar results in nature. She studies the large African monkeys known as mandrills. Mandrills have bright red noses that stand out against their white faces. Setchell's work shows that the powerful males-the ones who are more successful with females-have a brighter red nose than other males.
As well as the studies on primates by Setchell, another study shows the effect of red among birds.
In an experiment, scientists put red plastic rings on the legs of male zebra finches and this increased the birds' success with female zebra finches. Zebra finches already have bright red beaks(鸟喙), so this study suggests that, as with Olympic athletes, an extra flash of red is significant. In fact, researchers from the University of Glasgow say that the birds' brightly coloured beaks are an indicator of health. Jonathan Blount, a biologist, and his colleagues think they have found proof that bright red or orange beaks attract females because they mean that the males are healthier. Nothing in nature is simple, however, because in species such as the blue footed booby, a completely different colour seems to give the male birds the same advantage with females.
Meanwhile, what about those athletes who win in their events while wearing red? Do their clothes give them an unintentional advantage? Robert Barton accepts that “that is the implication” of their findings. Is it time for sports authorities to consider new regulations on sports clothing?
32.According to their research,Hill and Barton conclude that
A. the colour of clothing has an effect on most sport events
B. red should be the choice of colour for clothing in sports
C. red plays a role when competitors are equally capable
D. athletes perform better when surrounded by bright red
33.The underlined word “tip” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to
A.achieve B.advance C.keep D.change
34. The example of the blue footed booby proves that
A. male birds use different body parts to draw attention
B. red is not the only colour to attract female birds
C. blue gives female birds the same advantage
D. blue can indicate how healthy a bird is
35 What can be inferred from the passage?
A. The colour red gives male animals the most advantage
B. Male zebra finches prefer to have red plastic rings on their legs. .
C.Rules on sports clothing are going to be changed.
D.Athletes wearing red may have an advantage over their opponents.

One night, the winds screaming, a fishing boat was turned over by a strong storm at sea.The crew(全体船 员) in trouble sent out the S.O.S signals. The captain of the rescue rowboat team sounded the alarm(警报) and the villagers gathered in the town square overlooking the sea. When the team got on their rescue boat and fought their way through the wild waves, the villagers waited nervously on the beach, holding lamps(灯) to light the way back.
An hour later, the rescue boat reappeared through the fog( 雾 ) and the cheering villagers ran to greet them.Falling exhausted(精疲力竭的) on the sand, the volunteers reported that the rescue boat could not hold any more passengers and they had to leave one man behind .Even one more passenger would have surely overturned the rescue boat and all the people on board would have been lost.

写作Dear Daniel,
Thank you for your selfless and generous help to me while I was studying in UK. And here I'd like to extend a warm welcome to your acting as an exchange student to our High School, which is also my alma mater. Welcome!
Our school, the best in the city, has a lot to offer both in and outside class. Here, you will witness students from diverse backgrounds listening attentively, debate freely and thinking independently and learning eagerly within class. Meanwhile, outside class, you will find them joining different clubs, engaging in competitive sports and conducting diverse workshops.
To quickly adapt to our fast-paced campus life, firstly, you need to learn basic Chinese greetings like Nihao and Zaijian to befriend your peers. Secondly, make sure you google Chinese customs and taboos online as most students here were born and bred locally.
Wish you a fruitful learning experience!
Yours sincerely,
John Li

Hans replied, “Mother, I have to go.What if everyone said he can't go, let someone else do it? Mother, this time I have to do my duty. When the call for service comes , we all need to take our turn and do our part.”Although his mother still hoped her son could change his mind, Hans kissed his mother, joined the team and disappeared into the night.
After what seemed a century, the rescue boat finally broke through the thick fog , with Hans standing up in the bow(船头), waving to the waiting crowds. On seeing the boat, the crowd, who had been waiting with anxiety, now burst into cheers. All the people went up to welcome the rescue team. Cupping his hands, the captain called, “did you find the lost man?” Hardly able to control himself, Hans excitedly cried back, “Yes, we found him. Tell my mother it's my elder brother, Paul!”
