Ⅴ. 阅读表达。
Some people think that only adults can invent things. History shows us that many
children have been inventors. Margaret E. Knight was one of such children. Her success
showed that a girl could be an inventor.
Margaret was born on February 14th, 1838 in York, Maine, the USA. When
she was young, she didn’t like to play with dolls as other girls did. She was interested
in woods and tools. Margaret liked to make things with her hands. She would make
sleds(雪橇) for her brothers in winter, and kites to fly in summer.

Margaret’s father died when she was just ten years old. She had to leave school to
work at a cotton mill(工厂) with her brothers. One day, there was an accident at
the mill. One of the looms(织布机) stopped working right and hurt a worker. The
worker was badly hurt and then died. Over the years, many men had tried to make the
looms safer, but no one could make an idea work. Margaret made up her mind that
she would solve the problem.
She spent hours making drawings and models until she came up with a device(装
置) that worked. She was only twelve when her motion safety device could save lives.
Soon it was made part of all the looms. Margaret never got paid for her idea.
However, she said it was more important to save lives.
