My name is Alice. Early last year, I was troubled by an anxiety that crippled (削弱) my ability to do anything. I felt like a storm cloud hung over me. For almost a year I struggled on, constantly staring at this wall that faced me. My perfectionist tendencies were the main root of this: I wanted to be perfect at whatever I did, which obviously in life is not possible, but it consumed me.
One day, I attended a presentation (报告) by wildlife conservationist Grant Brown at my high school. His presentation not only awed (使惊叹) and inspired me, but also helped create an inner desire to make a difference in the world. I joined a pre-presentation dinner with him and that smaller setting allowed me to slowly build up my courage to speak one-on-one with him—an idea that had seemed impossible. This contact was where my story began.
A month later, Brown invited me to attend the World Youth Wildlife Conference. Looking back, I now see that this would be the first in a series of timely opportunities that my old self would have let pass, but that this new and more confident Alice enthusiastically seized. Shortly after I received his invitation, applications to join the Youth for Nature and the Youth for Planet groups were sent around through my high school. I decided to commit to completing the applications, and soon I was a part of a growing global team of young people working to protect nature. Each of these new steps continued to grow my confidence.
I am writing this just six months since my journey began and I’ve realized that my biggest obstacle (障碍) this whole time was myself. It was that voice in the back of my head telling me that one phrase that has stopped so many people from reaching their potential: I can’t. They say good things come to those who wait; I say: grab every opportunity with everything you have and be impatient. After all, nature does not require our patience, but our action.
4. What was the main cause for Alice’s anxiety?
A. Her desire to be perfect. B. Her habit of consumption.
C. Her inability to act her age. D. Her lack of inspiration.
5. How did Grant Brown’s presentation influence Alice?
A. She learned about the harm of desire.
B. She tasted the sweetness of friendship.
C. She decided to do something for nature.
D. She built up her courage to speak up.
6. Which of the following is the best description of Alice’s situation after the activities?
A. intelligent B. independent C. innovative D. confident
7. What can we learn from this passage?
A. Practice makes perfect. B. Patience is a cure of anxiety.
C. Action is worry’s worst enemy. D. Everything comes to those who wait.
Deserts could be the best places on Earth for harvesting solar power. They are spacious, relatively flat, and never short of sunlight. So researchers imagine it might be possible to transform the world’s largest desert, the Sahara, into a large solar farm, capable of meeting four times the world’s current energy demand.
While the black surfaces of solar panels absorb most of the sunlight that reaches them, only around 15% of that incoming energy gets turned into electricity. The rest is returned to the environment as heat, affecting the climate. If these effects were only local, they might not matter in a thinly populated desert. But the area of the installations in the Sahara would be vast, covering thousands of square miles. Heat released from an area this size will be redistributed by the flow of air in the atmosphere, having regional and even global effects on the climate.
A 2018 study used a climate model to assess the effects of building massive solar farms in the Sahara. The model revealed that when the size of the solar farm reaches 20% of the total area of the Sahara, the heat released by the darker solar panels creates a big temperature difference between the land and the surrounding oceans that ultimately lowers surface air pressure and causes wet air to rise and condense (凝结) into raindrops. With more rainfall, plants grow and the desert reflects less of the sun’s energy since vegetation absorbs light better than sand and soil. With more plants present, more water is evaporated (蒸发), creating a better environment that causes vegetation to spread.
So, a large solar farm could generate enough energy and at the same time turn one of the most abominable environments on Earth into a habitable place. Sounds perfect, right? Not quite. In a recent study, we used an advanced Earth system model to closely examine how Saharan solar farms interact with the climate. It showed there could be unintended effects in remote parts of the land and ocean.
We are only beginning to understand the potential consequences of establishing massive solar farms in deserts. Solutions like this may help society reduce the use of fossil energy, but Earth system studies like ours underscore the importance of considering the numerous coupled responses of the atmosphere, oceans, and land surface when examining their benefits and risks.
8. What can be learned about solar farms?
A. They are mainly located in deserts.
B. They can affect the local and even global climate.
C. They can make the best use of incoming energy.
D. They satisfy the world’s current energy demand.
9. What will happen if 20% of the Sahara is covered with solar panels according to the 2018 study?
A. It might become greener.
B. It might reflect more sunlight.
C. Its surface air pressure will increase.
D. Its temperature difference between day and night will decrease.
10. What does the underlined word “abominable” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Addictive. B. Dynamic. C. Sensitive. D. Unpleasant.
11. What does the author think of turning the Sahara into a solar farm?
A. It is an impossible task.
B. It will do more good than harm.
C. It calls for more consideration.
D. It might be the solution to fossil fuel pollution.
Most people aren’t good at creative problem solving for two reasons: First, they are not trained in how to be creative. Second, they don’t understand group strength well enough to harness(驾驭) their power to maximize group creativity.
A key element of creativity is applying existing knowledge to a new problem. The more people getting involved in solving it the more knowledge there is to work on it. Unfortunately, research shows that the traditional brainstorming methods fail to achieve that goal. When groups get together to exchange ideas, they actually come up with fewer ideas overall than if they each had worked alone.
To fix this problem, you should consider the two stages of group problem-solving: divergence(分散) and convergence(集中). Divergence happens when the group considers as many different potential solutions as possible. Convergence happens when the various proposed solutions are evaluated and reduced to a smaller set of candidate solutions to the current problem.
The essential principle of group creativity is that individuals working alone diverge, whereas group members working together converge. In groups, once a member states a potential solution, it makes others think about the problem similarly. That is why groups working together diverge less than individuals working alone.
Therefore, be aware of when to diverge and when to converge. For example, early in the problem-solving process, have group members work alone to write down statements describing the problem. Then get them back to discuss their descriptions. The group discussion will lead everyone to accept one or a small number of these statements to work on—this is healthy convergence.
When starting to generate solutions, you again want divergence. Have people work alone to start. Then collect people’s initial ideas and send them around to others and allow the divergence to continue as everyone individually builds on the ideas of other members. Finally, let the group discuss the resulting ideas. This discussion will gradually lead the group to converge on a small number of candidate solutions.
This simple method works effectively, because it respects what individuals and groups do best.
12. We can infer that the traditional brainstorming methods ______.
A. enable people to form more ideas together
B. greatly encourage group creativity
C. actually limit group creativity
D. prevent people’s involvement in the problems
13. According to Para. 4, when a member presents an idea, others tend to _____.
A. think the other way round B. follow his way of thinking
C. be more confident in their own ideas D. be less willing to share their own ideas
14. What should group members first do early in the problem-solving process?
A. Discuss the problem. B. Put down group statements together.
C. Simplify the problem. D. Write down their individual descriptions.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A A simple way to make group thinking more effective
B. Difficulties in organizing group thinking
C. Differences between divergence and convergence
D. Advantages of group thinking over individual thinking
When did we start walking for leisure?
“Going for a walk” is a popular pastime among older and younger generations alike because of its well-known benefits for our physical and mental health. But you may be surprised to hear that wandering through pretty streets or hiking in mountainous have not always been considered leisure activities, according to Daniel Gale, a researcher of pedestrianism
____16____ Before that, it was just something people did out of necessity, some of whom even associated it with criminal activity. But for Charles Dickens, the famous English 19th Century author, marching through London streets and tramping around the countryside was a big part of the creative process. ____17____ He walked at an impressive pace of four miles per hour, according to his biography by Peter Ackroyd.
____18____ Perhaps you can take inspiration from another big-thinking wanderer. 19th Century American writer Henry David Thoreau took a slower approach, preferring to stroll over hills and fields and through the woods. He said that he could not preserve his health and spirits without walking at least four hours a day.
This idea of taking a stroll to clear your head has survived through to the 21st Century. But have pedestrian manners remained the same? A 1780 article for the London Magazine advised pedestrians to avoid things such as hanging around in conversation and obstructing people behind you. ____19____
In this modern age, when many of us are tied to our desks and to our screens, try the simple act of stepping out onto the city pavements, or getting lost in nature. ____20____ Whether you see yourself more as a casual stroller or a purposeful strider (阔步者), why not build a habit out of it?
A. What if speed-walking isn’t your thing?
B. This may make all the difference to our wellbeing.
C. Nowadays, we could add distracted phone-users.
D. He brought the recreation of walking into fashion.
E. Going on an urban walk is much more pleasant now.
F. It was a time to absorb what was going on around him.
G. In Britain, walking for fun wasn’t really a thing until the 1780s.

“Anybody have a bandage (绷带)?” a voice echoed down the dorm hallway That was a common scene frequently happening in our first week at college when we were all experiencing “forgot-this-or-that.” I had forgot to bring snacks for late-night hunger. Some poor girl in the dorm had apparently forgotten bandages. We all felt a little displaced.
Several months before, I sat at my high school graduation party admiring my gifts and battling waves of post-high school emotions. The usual and beloved inspirational books were lying in disorder around my feet, silently announcing the wealth of wisdom they wished to share. A small pile of personal checks lay nearby. Laundry items, desk supplies, sewing things - all well-intentioned and well-received. They would demonstrate their givers’ thoughtfulness over and over during my college career.
But one gift struck me as strange. I frowned when I opened it. A first aid kit? Inside it were a small packet of pills, pain-killers, creams, ointments (药膏), an insect sprayer (喷雾), a tape, pads of gauze (纱布)and bandages. Who would give that as a gift? “You’ll need that once you’re at school,” Mom pointed out. “You won’t have to chase down the campus nurse for every cough. ”I shrugged at this thought.
Not long after, in August, I packed my life into a borrowed truck and slipped the first-aid kit in with my luggage. I barely thought about it once I reached campus, busy unpacking, book-buying, scheduling and meeting new friends.
One day, I was peacefully sitting in my room, absorbed in preparing my studies. The quiet atmosphere was suddenly broken by a sharp scream, “Anybody have a bandage? Emily got her arm burnt!” The voice echoed through the dormitory hall, instantly throwing residents into a state of confusion and alarm.

I remembered my little first-aid kit.

Most people aren’t good at creative problem solving for two reasons: First, they are not trained in how to be creative. Second, they don’t understand group strength well enough to harness(驾驭) their power to maximize group creativity.
A key element of creativity is applying existing knowledge to a new problem. The more people getting involved in solving it, the more knowledge there is to work on it.

A key element of creativity is applying existing knowledge to a new problem. The more people getting involved in solving it, the more knowledge there is to work on it. Unfortunately, research shows that the traditional brainstorming methods fail to achieve that goal.
In groups, once a member states a potential solution, that makes others think about the problem similarly.
For example, early in the problem-solving process, have group members work alone to write down statements describing the problem.
Most people aren’t good at creative problem solving for two reasons. 再根据第二段“Unfortunately, research shows that the traditional brainstorming methods fail to achieve that goal. When groups get together to exchange ideas, they actually come up with fewer ideas overall than if they each had worked alone”可知,不幸的是,研究表明,传统的头脑风暴方法未能实现这一目标。 故选A项。

This idea of taking a stroll to clear your head has survived through to the 21st Century But have pedestrian manners remained the same? A 1780 article for the London Magazine advised pedestrians to avoid things such as hanging around in conversation and obstructing people behind you. ____19____
In this modern age, when many of us are tied to our desks and to our screens, try the simple act of stepping out onto the city pavements, or getting lost in nature. ____20____ Whether you see yourself more as a casual stroller or a purposeful strider (阔步者), why not build a habit out of it?

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
It’s hard to believe that I am so close to reaching the end of high school. Looking back, I find the past days has witnessed plenty of memorable activities. However, the one that stuck me as the most impressive was the coming-of-age ceremony.
To honor the students who had turned 18, a grand ceremony was held in the 2nd term of the senior year. We students, wearing traditional dress, gathered at the stadium as scheduled. First, our principal sincerely extended her congratulations on us becoming a grown-up. Then followed the Confucian-style coming-of-age ceremonies-Ji Li (for girls) and Guan Li (for boys). Finally, we made a solemn vow to shoulder the responsibilities of an adult, which was definitely the highlight.
Personally, the ceremony exerted a profound influence on us students. Not only did it fully expose us to traditional Chinese culture, but it motivated us to embrace the new identity and live up to our promise.

“Anybody have a bandage (绷带)?” a voice echoed down the dorm hallway. That was a common scene frequently happening in our first week at college when we were all experiencing “forgot-this-or-that.” I had forgot to bring snacks for late-night hunger.

Paragraph 1:
I remembered my little first-aid kit. Grabbing my package in no time, I stormed into the hall where I saw Emily sitting on the floor, her face contorted in pain, her arm reddened and swollen. Kneeling beside her and gently unwrapping the first-aid kit, I quickly yet carefully cleaned the burned area with the antiseptic cream, applied a gauze pad to the burn, and secured it with a bandage. Emily’s eyes were filled with tears, but she still managed a grateful nod. “Thank you,” she whispered, her voice hoarse. “It’s okay,” I reassured her. Soon, many of the other girls heard of my little kit and paid me a visit for various needs. The little gift I had questioned now led me toward new friendships. As it broke diseases, it also broke the ice, allowing me to meet and befriend many in the dorm.
Paragraph 2:
Years later, I received a party invitation from a young friend who was graduating from high school. Eager as I was to attend her party, I was at a loss what gift to prepare. Then like a bolt out of the blue, memories of my own party rushed back to me, and I smiled at the opportunity presenting itself. As I drove to the pharmacy, I knew exactly what gift I would give her: a first-aid kit. When I arrived at her party with the very gift for her, her eyes widened in surprise at it, exactly as what I did years ago. I smiled and explained the depth and meaning behind my choice. It was not just a first-aid kit but a chance to be a friend. Knowing the whole story, she took it and winked at me, “Yes, it is bandage for bond”.
