The fiddler crab (蟹) is a living clock. It indicates the time of day by the colour of its skin,
which is dark by day and pale by night. The crab's changing colour follows a regular
twenty-four hour plan that exactly matches the daily rhythm of the sun.
Does the crab actually keep time, or does its skin simply answer to the sun's rays, changing
colour according to the amount of light which strikes it? To find out, biologists kept crabs in a
dark room for two months. Even without daylight, the crab's skin colour continued to change
exactly on time.
This characteristic probably developed gradually in answer to the daily rising and setting of
the sun, to help protect the crab from sunlight and enemies. After millions of years it has
become completely controlled inside the living body of the crab.
The biologists noticed that once each day the colour of the fiddler crab is especially dark,
and that each day this happens fifty minutes later than on the day before. From this they
discovered that each crab follows not only the rhythm of the sun but also that of the tides (潮水).
The crab's period of greatest darkening is exactly
the time of low tide on the beach where it was caught!

To be a good teacher you need some of the gifts of a good actor; you must be able to hold
the attention and interest of your audience; you must be a clear speaker with a good strong
pleasing voice which is fully under your control; and you must be able to act what you are
teaching in order to make its meaning clear.
Watch a good teacher and you will see that he does not sit still before his class:he stands
the whole time he is teaching; he walks about using his arms hands and fingers to help him in
his explanations and his face to express feelings.Listen to him and you will hear the loudness

the quality and the musical note of his voice always changing according to what he is talking
about.
The fact that a good teacher has some of the gifts of a good actor doesn’t mean that he will
indeed be able to act well on the stage for there are very important differences between the
teacher’s work and the actor’s.The actor has to speak words which he has learnt by heart; he
has to repeat exactly the same words each time he plays a certain part even his movements and
the ways in which he uses his voice are usually fixed beforehand. What he has to do is to make
all these carefully learnt words and actions seem natural on the stage.
A good teacher works in quite a different way.His audience takes an active part in his play
they ask and answer questions they obey orders and if they don’t understand something they
say so.The teacher therefore has to meet the needs of his audience which is his class. He cannot
learn his part by heart but must invent it as he goes along.
I have known many teachers who were fine actors in class but were unable to take part in a
stage-play because they could not keep strictly to what another had written.
56. What is the text about?

B. must have a good voice
C. knows how to act on the stage
D. stands or sits still while teaching
59. In what way is a teacher’s work different from an actor’s?
A. The teacher must learn everything by heart.
B. He knows how to control his voice better than an actor.
C. He has to deal with unexpected situations.
D. He has to use more facial expressions.
60. The main difference between students in class and a theatre audience is that _________.
A. students can move around in the classroom
B. students must keep silent while theatre audience needn’t
C. no memory work is needed for the students
D. the students must take part in their teachers’ plays

六、阅读理解 (本大题共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,共计 10 分)
从 A、B、C、D 四个选项中,选出符合题目要求的最佳选项。
It is bad to have food stuck between your teeth for long periods of time. This is because
food attracts germs; germs produce acid, and acid hurts your teeth and gums. Flossing (使用牙
线 ) helps to remove the food that gets stuck between your teeth. This explains why flossing
helps to keep your mouth healthy, but some doctors say that flossing can also be good for your
heart.
It may seem strange that something you do for your teeth can have any effect on your heart.
Doctors have come up with a few ideas about how flossing works to keep your heart healthy.
One idea is that the germs that hurt your teeth can leave the mouth and travel into your
blood.Germs that get into the blood can then attack your heart. Another idea is based on the fact
that when there are too many germs in your mouth, the body tries to fight against there germs.
For some reason, the way the body fights these mouth germs may end up weakening the heart
overtime.
Not every doctor agrees about these ideas. Some doctors think that the link between good
flossing habits and good heart health is only a coincidence. The incidence (发生率) of two or
more events is completely random, as they do not admit of any reliable cause and effect
relationship between them. For example, every time I wash my car, it rains. This does not mean
that when I wash my car, I somehow change the weather. This is only a coincidence. Similarly,
some doctors think that people who have bad flossing habits just happen to also have heart
problems, and people who have good flossing habits just happen to have healthy hearts.
The theory that flossing your teeth helps to keep your heart healthy might not be true. But
every doctor agrees that flossing is a great way to keep your teeth healthy. So even if flossing
does not help your heart, it is true to help your teeth. This is enough of a reason for everyone to
floss their teeth every day.
66. From the passage, we know that ________.
A. food stuck between your teeth may hurt your teeth
B. all of the doctors agree that flossing is good for your heart
C. doctors' judgment about flossing is based on medical research
D. not every doctor thinks flossing helps to keep your teeth healthy
67. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 is to ________.
A. provide an example
B. make a comparison
C. introduce a new topic
D. develop the previous statement
68. Which of the following best states the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. It is a fact that flossing can help your heart as well as your teeth.
B. There is no good reason to believe that flossing will help your heart.
C. Because doctors find flossing won't help your heart, it is useless to floss.
D. Even if flossing is only good for your teeth, you should still do it every day.
69. What’s the Chinese meaning of the underlined word “remove” in paragraph one?
A. 使再次移动 B. 使消失 C. 去除 D.使伤害
70. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Flossing by Coincidence
B. How to Keep Your Teeth Healthy
C. Flossing Habits and Healthy Hearts
D. Why Doctors Disagree About Flossing

从 A、B、C、D 四个选项中,选出符合题目要求的最佳选项。
College isn’t for everyone. Earning a degree will improve the income potential, but high
tuition is a deterrent for some. Some can’t afford it. Others choose not to continue their
schooling for other reasons. But they can still find a good job without a college degree.
●Manufacturing Sales Reps
Average salary: $52,440 Current workforce: 1,430,000
Projected job growth, 2010-2020: 16%
Wholesale and manufacturing sales reps who specialize in non-technical products make
27% more than full-time workers. Unlike those salespeople, wholesale reps market their
product directly to businesses and government agencies. The pay is good, the opportunities are
numerous and, for most employers, a high school diploma is enough to get a job.
● Dry Wall Workers
Average salary: $45,490 Current workforce: 22,900
Projected job growth, 2010-2020: 27%
No high-school diploma? No problem. Dry wall workers are the only workers on our list
who can expect good money and strong job growth without even finishing high school. Dry
wall workers work in the construction industry, preparing walls for painting after masons (泥瓦
匠) build them up. Most learn from more experienced workers during working.
● Electricians
Average salary: $48,250 Current workforce: 577,700
Projected job growth, 2010-2020: 23%
The world is more mechanized than ever before, and more machines mean more work
for these skilled workers, who will see nearly 134 000 new jobs added by 2020. A typical
electrician makes more than $48,000 per year with a high school degree. Major cities
promise the most jobs.
● Commercial Pilots
Average salary: $67,500 Current workforce: 32,700
Projected job growth, 2010-2020: 28%
An average commercial pilot makes $26,000 more than a typical full-time worker and
$13,000 more than an average college-educated worker. It requires only a commercial
