Climbing, I once thought, was a very manly activity, but as I found my way into this activity, I came to see that something quite different happens on the rock.
Like wild swimming, rock climbing involves you into the landscape. On the rock, I am fully focused. Eyes pay close attention, ears are alert, and hands move across the surface. Unlike walking, where I could happily wander about absent-mindedly, in climbing, attentive observation is essential.
As an arts student studying English literature, I discovered a new type of reading from outdoor climbing. Going out on to the crags (悬崖), I saw how you could learn to read the rocks and develop a vocabulary of physical movements. Good climbers knew how to adjust their bodies on to the stone. Watching them, I wanted to possess that skillful “language”.
My progress happened when I worked for the Caingorms National Park Authority. Guiding my explorations into this strange new landscape was Nan Shepherd, a lady too. Unlike the goal-directed mindset of many mountaineers, she is not concerned with peaks or personal achievement. Shepherd sees the mountain as a total environment and she celebrates the Caingorms as a place alive with plants, rocks, animals and elements. Through her generous spirit and my own curiosity, I saw that rock climbing need not be a process of testing oneself against anything. Rather, the intensity of focus could develop a person into another way of being.
Spending so much time in high and stony places has transformed my view on the world and our place in it. I have come into physical contact with processes that go way beyond the everyday. Working with gravity, geology (地质学), rhythms of weather and deep time, I gain an actual relationship with the earth. This bond lies at the heart of my passion for rock climbing. I return to the rocks, because this is where I feel in contact with our land.
24.Why does the author like rock climbing?
A.It challenges her to compete with men. B.It allows her a unique attitude toward rock.
C.It teaches her how to possess a new language. D.It makes her feel connected wth the earth.
25.What does the writer find important in climbing?
A.Balance. B.Concentration.
C.Determination. D.Perseverance
26.What does the writer learn from Nan Shepherd?
A.Climbing goes together with nature. B.Every mountain top is within reach.
C.The best climber is the one having fun. D.You can not achieve high unless you change.
27.What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.Time. B.Transformation. C.The world. D.My view.
C
Gorillas (大猩猩) in films such as King Kong and Tarzan are wildly beating their chests when under threat. Researchers have tried to find out what the behavior might mean, and they doubt that the gorillas exhibit this behavior not to start fights, but to prevent themselves — and chest-beating could be used to advertise their body size to other gorillas.
Scientists observed 25 wild male mountain gorillas for over 3,000 hours. The research team used audio (音频) equipment to record the sound frequency, rate, duration, and amount of chest beats. To determine each gorilla’s size, the researchers used cameras to photograph and measure each gorilla’s back.
Although the rate, duration, and amount of beats did not correlate with the size of the gorillas, sound frequency did , the researchers report. The team also noticed that larger gorillas produced deeper-tone chest drumming. Previous research has shown that a gorilla’s larger body size is linked to reproductive success and social rank. The chest-beating could be a way for the gorillas to advertise their size to others and, in turn, avoid fights that could result in serious injury or death.
Though gorillas can obviously observe size just by getting a good look at others, the researchers suggest chest beating is copper-bottomed when trying to communicate through a thick forest. The sounds gorillas created by beating their chests are powerful enough to travel long distance through thick forests and signal others their size and fighting ability.
Animal expert Anna Nekaris says it would be interesting to see if smaller gorillas can imitate the deep tones of larger ones in future studies. Nekaris says, “For now, the researchers will continue to study chest-beating to see if the action can pass on other information, such as dominance rank, sex, and individual identity, to nearby gorillas.”
28.What is the second paragraph mainly about according to the research?
A.Its findings. B.Its purpose. C.Its samples. D.Its method.
29.Why do some gorillas beat their chests?
A.To declare war on other gorillas. B.To frighten other gorillas away.
C.To welcome their companions. D.To celebrate their victory in a fight.
30.What does Nekaris suggest researchers’ study in the future?
A.If smaller gorillas can make deep-toned chest drumming.
B.If gorillas’ chest-beating contains other information.
C.If larger gorillas are better at using their body influence.
D.If gorillas have other communication skills.
31.Which section may the passage come from in a newspaper?
A.Health. B.Entertainment. C.Science. D.Sports.
D
In the past few weeks, Richard Eckersley has noticed a change in the type of people who come into his shop. In 2017, the former Manchester United footballer set up Earth. Food. Love in Tones, Devon, with his wife, Nicola. It’s the UK’s first “zero waste” store—the food is in big jars and boxes and people bring their own containers. “A lot of new people are coming in-people who have not necessarily been interested in environmental issues before”, he says.
Recently, the government called for supermarkets to introduce plastic-free passageways. But Eckersley says many customers are already way ahead of politicians. He and Nicola have helped people set up similar stores in Wales, Birmingham, and Bristol. Ingrid Caldironi had a similar idea. She set up a plastic-free shop in London last year, which has been so popular that it is soon moving to a bigger site.
Eckersley and Caldironi are members of an anti-plastics movement in the UK that has been growing as a result of the BBC’s Blue Planet series and a general worry about the damage plastic is doing to the environment. But big supermarkets have so far not tried very hard to reduce their plastic waste. Sian Sutherland, founder of the movement “A Plastic Planet”, says, “The most exciting thing is that politicians and industry are no longer saying that recycling will solve the problem. Banning the use of plastic packaging for food and drink products is the only answer.” Walking down the passageways of the supermarket where everything from pizza to fresh fruit and vegetables is covered in plastic. Sutherland says immediate action is needed.
Plastic pollution is causing widespread global damage. More than one million plastic bottles are bought around the world every minute, and most end up in landfill or the sea. The contamination is so wide that tap water around the world also contains plastic.
32.What is special about Earth. Food. Love?
A.It gives away boxes of food. B.It is a store without plastic bags.
C.It has few new customers. D.It is the UK’s first supermarket.
33.What caused Caldironi’s shop to be relocated to a larger place?
A.Its popularity. B.Its products. C.Its profits. D.Its similarity.
34.What does the underlined word “contamination” in last paragraph mean?
A.Pollution. B.Acceptance. C.Influence. D.Application.
35.What is the text mainly about?
A.The impact of BBC’s Blue Planet series on anti-plastics movements.
B.Rising anti-plastics movement alongside increasing environmental concerns.
C.A guide to setting up plastic-free stores to promote recycling in the whole UK.
D.Richard Eckersley’s personal journey in waste reduction and pollution prevention.

How to improve long-term memory
There are some things that are easy for us to remember and you notice that you can still recall that information even when you no longer need it. Sometimes it is difficult to remember information. 36 Try the following steps below to remember information you want to keep in your long-term memory.

39 When you need to remember a piece of information, try relating it to a picture that is easily remembered. This is how many people remember positions. They can simply recall that the store is near the bridge.
Repeat. The more you are exposed to something, the easier it is to remember at a later time. 40 Try using his name at least three times when you first talk to someone. That name will be easier to remember later.

One afternoon after school, Mary and her brother, Keith, were eating at a cafe near their home. That afternoon, they had to share their table with another person. That person was a young lady in her twenties. After eating, she went to the restroom. Without realizing, she had left her cellphone on the table. Five minutes later, she came out and walked out of the cafe without looking back.
Mary saw the cellphone on the table. She quickly told Keith, “Keith, the girl left behind her cellphone.”Keith looked at the cellphone. It took his breath away. It was one of the latest models on the market. Keith had always wanted a cellphone. But his parents had told him, “You don’t need one. You can always use the house phone.” He stared at it for some minutes. Then, he said slowly, pausing on every word, “I want to take the cellphone.” Mary could not believe her ears. She only stared at her brother, “You can’t! What if the owner comes to look for it?”
After making the decision, Keith quickly got the cellphone and put it in his schoolbag. Then, he took Mary’s hand and led her out of the cafe quickly.
Once back home, Keith locked his room door with trembling (颤抖的) hands. Inside his room, he took out the piece of beauty. Oh, he liked it so much. He had his own cellphone. Soon, he was polishing it happily. But Mary told him, “Keith, you cannot keep the cellphone. What will you tell our father about this? He will ask you how you got the cellphone.” Keith said quickly, “I will say a friend lent it to me.” Mary said, “Now you are lying too. Oh dear! When had Keith turned so dishonest?”
Then, Mary saw a house phone number on the cover of the cellphone. “This is the girl’s phone number. Why don’t we just call this number? We will talk to her and ask her to come and take back her cellphone,” she was trying to talk some sense into him.

D.My view.
【答案】24.D 25.B 26.A 27.C
根据文章最后一段“Working with gravity, geology, rhythms of weather and deep time, I gain an actual relationship with the earth. This bond lies at the heart of my passion for rock climbing. I return to the rocks, because this is where I feel in contact with our land.(与重力、地质、气候节奏及深远的时间长河合作,我与地球建立起一种实际的关系。这种纽带正是我对攀岩热情的核心所在。我回归岩石,因为在这里,我能感受到与我们脚下这片土地的联系)”可知,攀岩使她感到与大地相连。故选D项。
25.细节理解题。根据文章第二段“On the rock, I am fully focused. Eyes pay close attention, ears are alert, and hands move across the surface. Unlike walking, where I could happily wander about absent-mindedly, in climbing, attentive observation is essential.(在岩石之上,我全神贯注。眼睛密切注视,耳朵警觉倾听,双手在表面游走。与行走时可以心不在焉地悠然漫步不同,攀岩时,专注观察至关重要)”可知,作者发现攀岩时专注很重要。故选B项。
26.推理判断题。根据文章第四段“Shepherd sees the mountain as a total environment and she celebrates the Caingorms as a place alive with plants, rocks, animals and elements.(Shepherd将山视为一个完整的环境,并且她赞美凯恩戈姆山是一个充满植物、岩石、动物和自然元素的地方)”可知,作者从Shepherd身上学到攀登与大自然融为一体。故选A项。
根据划线词所在句子“Spending so much time in high and stony places has transformed my view on the world and our place in it.(在高处多石的地方呆了这么长时间,改变了我对世界和我们在其中的地位的看法)”可知,此处指作者通过爬山改变了对世界和自身在世界中的地位的看法,it指代前文的“世界”。故选C项。
C.Science. D.Sports.
【答案】28.D 29.B 30.A 31.C
根据第二段“Scientists observed 25 wild male mountain gorillas for over 3,000 hours. The research team used audio (音频) equipment to record the sound frequency, rate, duration, and amount of chest beats. To determine each gorilla’s size, the researchers used cameras to photograph and measure each gorilla’s back.(科学家对25只野生雄性山地大猩猩进行了3000多个小时的观察。研究小组使用音频设备记录下声音的频率、频率、持续时间和胸部跳动的次数。为了确定每只大猩猩的大小,研究人员用相机拍摄并测量了每只大猩猩的背部)”可知,第二段主要介绍了科学家们开展该研究的具体方法。故选D。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段中“The chest-beating could be a way for the gorillas to advertise their size to others and, in turn, avoid fights that could result in serious injury or death.(拍打胸部可能是大猩猩向其他动物展示自己体型的一种方式,从而避免可能导致严重伤害或死亡的打斗)”可知,一些大猩猩拍打胸部是为了展示自己的体型,把其他大猩猩吓跑,避免打斗。故选B。
根据最后一段中“Animal expert Anna Nekaris says it would be interesting to see if smaller gorillas can imitate the deep tones of larger ones in future studies.(动物专家Anna Nekaris说,在未来的研究中,看看小型大猩猩是否能模仿大型大猩猩的低沉音调,这将是一件有趣的事情)”可知,Nekaris建议研究人员在未来研究小一点的大猩猩是否能发出低沉的拍打胸部的声音。故选A。
根据第一段“Gorillas (大猩猩) in films such as King Kong and Tarzan are wildly beating their chests when under threat. Researchers have tried to find out what the behavior might mean, and they doubt that the gorillas exhibit this behavior not to start fights, but to prevent themselves — and chest-beating could be used to advertise their body size to other gorillas.(电影《金刚》和《人猿泰山》中的大猩猩在受到威胁时会疯狂地捶打自己的胸膛。
【答案】32.B 33.A 34.A 35.B
Food.
根据第一段“It’s the UK’s first “zero waste” store—the food is in big jars and boxes and people bring their own containers.(这是英国第一家“零浪费”商店——食物装在大罐子和盒子里,人们自己带着容器)”以及第二段“She set up a plastic-free shop in London last year, which has been so popular that it is soon moving to a bigger site. (去年,她在伦敦开了一家无塑料商店,这家商店非常受欢迎,很快就会搬到更大的地方)”可知,Earth. Food.
根据第二段“She set up a plastic-free shop in London last year, which has been so popular that it is soon moving to a bigger site. (去年,她在伦敦开了一家无塑料商店,这家商店非常受欢迎,很快就会搬到更大的地方)”可知,这家店的受欢迎程度让卡尔迪罗尼的店搬到了一个更大的地方。故选A。
根据划线词上文“Plastic pollution is causing widespread global damage. More than one million plastic bottles are bought around the world every minute, and most end up in landfill or the sea.(塑料污染正在造成广泛的全球破坏。世界各地每分钟售出100多万个塑料瓶,其中大多数最终被填埋或入海)”以及后文“is so wide that tap water around the world also contains plastic.” 故选A。
通读全文,并根据第二段“Recently, the government called for supermarkets to introduce plastic-free passageways. But Eckersley says many customers are already way ahead of politicians. He and Nicola have helped people set up similar stores in Wales, Birmingham, and Bristol.(最近,政府呼吁超市引入无塑料通道。但埃克斯利表示,许多消费者已经走在了政客的前面。他和尼古拉帮助人们在威尔士、伯明翰和布里斯托尔建立了类似的商店)”可知,文章以没有塑料袋的商店Earth. Food.

How to improve long-term memory
There are some things that are easy for us to remember and you notice that you can still recall that information even when you no longer need it. Sometimes it is difficult to remember information. 36 Try the following steps below to remember information you want to keep in your long-term memory.
Organize information into groups. 37 It is like a supermarket; things of the same kind are put in the same place.
Connect related information. 38 This is an excellent way for you to keep information in mind as it can make your memory function better when the related information is needed.
A.Relate what you have already known to what you will remember.
B.This will help you remember things better and longer if they are grouped.
C.Write down the information in order, read it and say it aloud at once.
D.Develop pictures in your mind.
E.But there are ways to make it easier
F.Deal with information effectively.
G.This is especially good for meeting new people
【答案】36.E 37.B 38.A 39.D 40.G

The next morning, after a long and restless night, he was determined to return the cellphone to the owner. After school, he told Mary, “I am going to phone the owner.”
Mary was very happy to hear that. Back home, they phoned the owner’s house phone. A girl answered the phone. Kevin asked, “Are you the owner of the cellphone? I’m Keith. I have your cellphone. Can you come and get it?” The girl replied “Yes” excitedly, expressing her gratitude repeatedly. Ten minutes later, she was at the same cafe to meet Keith. Handing back the cellphone to her and seeing her smile happily, Keith realized that honesty was indeed the best policy.
