2. Have students pay attention to the title of the Reading part
(“Understanding culture through music”) and that of the unit (“The universal
language”), and then discuss the third question in A3 on page 18.
I agree that music is a universal language. Sometimes we can still connect
with the feelings expressed in a foreign language song without fully
understanding its lyrics. It is a form of communication that does not require
words.
3. Have students finish B3 on page 19.
The sentence using personification:
批 注
When the two lovers, Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, first meet, the music is
light and pleasant, as if whispering to the audience.
My favourite piece of music is the one by the jazz musician George Benson
called White Rabbit. The trumpet announces the piece loudly and confidently.
It is followed by the gentle sounds of the electric guitar which get more
energetic as they compete for your attention. As the piece progresses, all the
instruments finally join hands and dance together in perfect harmony.
4. Have students listen to the whole piece of Butterfly Lovers after class
and give a detailed description of the part that impresses them the most.
What impresses me the most is the part when Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai reunite
after a long time of being apart. This part of the music is so touching. At
first, the melody sounds a bit light-hearted with the violin showing the short
happiness of their reunion. Then the tone becomes very soft, symbolizing their
deep love. Gradually, the melody becomes lower, slower and very sad. The
melancholic tone causes me to visualize a scene where the two of them are hugging
and weeping, with their hearts bleeding.
