Anna hated helping with the cooking. What she loved best was riding Copper. Since Mum died, Dad made it clear to her that she’d be safe. Anna never had the chance to drive the cattle on Copper.
After washing cups and going to her bed, she listened to the men talk about the next day’s work.
“A storm’s coming,” Dad said. “The cattle will be afraid.”
Anna tried to sleep but couldn’t. “The men will need my help!” she thought. But when Dad case, he refused her offer. Anna crossed her arms and looked at the sky. The stars disappeared (消失) under a blanket of clouds. The wind blew hard. The cattle were nervous.
The camp slept—everyone but Anna. Tears ran down her face. Why couldn’t Dad understand? She knew he took Mum’s death seriously, but how could he try to protect Anna from everything? Anna felt a few drops of rain. She got up, took her hat, and went toward her horse. “Copper!” she whispered. The horse seemed to understand her. Anna rode slowly into the darkness. Pulling her hat down against the rain, she lost herself in memories of riding with her parents.
A loud sound of thunder shook Anna from her thoughts. Copper became nervous too. As lightning lit the land, Anna saw the cattle and felt the same fear. More lightning crashed. The cattle became more nervous and at last some young ones began to run wildly in one direction.
Stampede (动物惊跑)! All of them were coming to the camp!
Anna turned Copper around and raced back, shouting loud. Nearing the camp, Anna saw the men trying to get out of the way. The lightning was bright as daylight. At full speed, Anna led Copper toward the frightened cattle.
She raced forward with the cattle, shaking her hat at them and trying to change their direction. It was hard, but slowly the young ones followed, and then more followed. Finally, the camp was safe. Dad and all the other men came along and helped lead the cattle back.
Later when Anna was making coffee to warm them, Dad looked down at her seriously. Something different was in his usually gentle brown eyes “Good job!” Finally he pulled Anna into a bear bug (拥抱). “If you forgive (原谅) an old man for loving his girl too much, I’d have you ride with us tomorrow.”

Forest bathing began in Japan in the 1980s. It is a practice called shinrin—yoku, which can be translated as “taking in the medicine or air of the forest”. It has recently grown more popular worldwide. When people take time in the natural green world to “be” in a fully present way, studies show it does good to health.
One of the good things of taking a walk in nature is getting away from screens. When we enjoy nature, we keep ourselves away from computers or mobile phones. We take a break and allow ourselves to get strength and energy back. During forest bathing, we are slowing down, stopping making quick decisions, experiencing the pleasure of nature through all of our senses, enjoying being alive and enjoying just the present moment.
In fact, forest bathing is also becoming a more and more popular way of treating stress (压力). Forest bathing is believed to help those experiencing stressful situations. In one recent study, people who formed the habits of walking through forests had lowered blood pressure (血压) and got out of worries.
At the same time bathing in forest air produces more natural killer—NK cells (细胞) in our blood. Our body uses these NK cells to fight illness. One Japanese study showed a rise in the number and activity of these NK cells among people who forest bathe. Plants and trees in forests can also send out something called phytoncides (植物杀菌剂). This tree oil can not only protect plants and trees themselves, but also help people sleep well, lift mood and attention, bring joy and boost health.
Forest bathing needs repeated practice. It’s not a one-and-done quick fix. Studies in England on green spaces showed that spending at least 120 minutes a week in nature helps with good health. It doesn’t matter if you break up the two hours into shorter walks in a local park filled with lots of trees or spend an afternoon in a forest.
Taking a quick walk through nature and rushing through the activity to get back to work, let’s say, may not be as helpful. Nor is it advised to play loud music as you walk. Forest bathing shows a different way of life. You’re walking through nature in a forest and taking your time. You’re noticing feelings and staring more of a relaxing and meaningful life.
32. According to the passage, during forest bathing people may ________.
A. think only of the past moment B. make decisions more quickly
C. spend less energy to take exercise D. keep themselves away from worries
33 The underlined word “boost” in Paragraph 4 probably means ________.
A. risk B. improve C. harm D. offer
34. About forest bathing, the writer might agree that ________.
A. people should form a habit of walking in nature
B. playing light music while walking can be helpful
C. walking for at least 2 hours every time is necessary
D. NK cells and phytoncides are both produced in plants
35. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. How can we enjoy forest baths in nature? B. Is it helpful or unhelpful to forest bathe?
C. Forest bathing is a great help from nature. D. Forest bathing is a way to change nature.

Martin Strel knows one thing or two about rivers. The 63-year-old swimmer has been swimming in them since he was a young boy. Although he holds five world records in marathon swimming, he is best known for using his sport to warn people of water pollution. After years of swimming in dirty water, he decided he had to do something. Strel says he began to swim to develop peace, friendship and clean water. He hopes to see environmental laws improved and put into practice.
To achieve this, he has swum in many of the world’s most famous rivers. In 2000, he swam in Europe’s second longest river, the Danube. He swam 1,866 miles in 58 days and kept a world record for long distance (距离) swimming. The Danube is heavily polluted by factory waste.
In 2002, Strel swam in the Mississippi River and covered a distance of 2,360 miles in 68 days. The Mississippi is one of the most polluted rivers in the United States. It is so polluted that it is called the dead zone (地带). Strel became so sick by the end of his Mississippi swim that he had to stay in hospital for three days.
In 2007, he swam 3,274 miles of the Amazon River in 66 days. Most of the pollution in the Amazon comes from harmful materials. He lost 42 pounds and was so weak that he couldn’t feed himself.
Strel plans to keep on swimming for peace, friendship and clean water, but he would choose to do it in the ocean (海洋). Sadly, the world’s rivers are simply too dirty. “Everyone would like to go swimming in clean water,” says Strel. He dreams of a day when that will be possible for people around the world.

Taking a quick walk through nature and rushing through the activity to get back to work let’s say, may not be as helpful. Nor is it advised to play loud music as you walk. Forest bathing shows a different way of life. You’re walking through nature in a forest and taking your time. You’re noticing feelings and staring more of a relaxing and meaningful life.

【答案】One possible version:
Dear chairperson,
I’m writing to share with you how my family celebrated last week’s Dragon Boat Festival in a greener way and what else I can do to go green.
Before the festival, my grandmother made rice dumplings at home. She also taught my mother to make rice dumplings by reusing bamboo leaves. Our family tried to collect boxes for dumplings to make homes for cats around our neighbourhood.
During the Spring Festival, we can stop letting off fireworks to reduce light and noise pollution. Moreover, we can keep empty red packets for next year to save energy.
If we do something, we can make a difference. I’ll encourage people to change by making posters or writing to the government.
I hope my advice is helpful.
Yours,
Li Hua.
