Good relationship are definitely good sources of happiness in life. We all want happy relationships but if we do not keep that relationship alive, it can also be one of the most distraught things in life. There may be no hard and fast rules in making good relationships, as each of us has different preferences and points of view as to what is a great relationship. The following are some major key players in making relationships work.
It is often said that building good relationship is all about communication. Good communication indeed governs a good relationship—knowing the right thing to say, when to say it, how to say it, and accepting some things that are better left unsaid. I personally think communication must be broadened because relationships involve more decisions to make. From study to work, from money to entertainment and even in things about yourself or about your friends that you do not know, communication is necessary in these aspects of the relationships.
Of course, being with someone is not saying that you totally agree with him or her all the time. You and your friends come from different family backgrounds, raised in different environment so there may be disagreement here and there. However, it is important in making relationship work to express disagreements without pushing the relationship to end. Again, good communication and learning to compromise(妥协) at times are necessary.
As relationships last longer, you may also discover things about you and your friends that you may not have known before. Therefore supporting each other on both your “hidden selves” can also make a good relationship.
Love is an important aspect of building relationships and for me, I always believe that love needs open communication, respect, support and understanding each other in making relationships work.
4. The underlined word “distraught” in Paragraph 1 probably means _________.
A. interesting B. surprising C. funny D. upset
5. To communicate well with people, you should know that _________.
A. supporting each other in anything helps build a good relationship
B. a white lie is necessary sometimes
C. compromises are necessary at any time
D. your friends need to have the same backgrounds with you
6. According to the text, which of the following are NOT important for a good relationship?
A. Communication. B. Support.
C. Hidden selves. D. Love.
7. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Forbidden Rules in Building Good Relationships.
B. Keys to Making Relationships Work.
C. Different Opinions on Good Relationships.
D. The Importance to Express Disagreements.
C
We all know that unpleasant feeling when we’re talking about something interesting and halfway through our sentence we’re interrupted(打断). But was that really an interruption? The answer depends on whom you ask, according to new research led by Katherine Hilton from Stanford University.
Using a set of controlled audio clips, Hilton surveyed 5,000 American English speakers to better understand what affects people’s perceptions(认知)of interruptions. She had participants listen to audio clips and then answer questions about whether the speakers seemed to be friendly and engaged, listening to one another, or trying to interrupt.
Hilton found that American English speakers have different conversational styles. She identified two groups: high and low intensity speakers. High intensity speakers are generally uncomfortable with moments of silence in conversation and consider talking at the same time a sign of engagement. Low intensity speakers find it rude to talk at the same time and prefer people speak one after another in conversation:
The differences in conversational styles became obvious when participants listened to audio clips in which two people spoke at the same time but were agreeing with each other and stayed on topic, Hilton said. The high intensity group reported that conversations where people spoke at the same time when expressing agreement were not interruptive but engaged and friendlier than the conversations with moments of silence in between speaking turns. In contrast, the low intensity group perceived any amount of simultaneous (同时) chat as a rude interruption, regardless of what the speakers were saying.
“People care about being interrupted, and those smalt interruptions can have a massive effect on the overall communication,” Hilton said. “Breaking apart what an interruption means is essential if we want to understand how humans interact with each other.”
8. What does Hilton’s research focus on?
A. What interruptions mean to people. B. Where interruptions are accepted.
C. How to avoid getting interrupted D. Why speakers interrupt each other.
9. What do participants of the study need to do?
A. Record an audio clip. B. Answer some questions.
C. Listen to one another. D. Have a chat with a friend.
10. What do low intensity speakers think of simultaneous chat?
A. It’s important. B. It’s interesting. C. It’s inefficient. D. It’s impolite.
11. What can we learn from Hilton’s research?
A. Conversational styles affect perceptions of interruptions.
B. Communication is the very basis of our everyday life.
C. Interruptions during conversations contribute to thinking.
D. Language barriers will always exist regardless of the content.
D
In order to help discover spoilage(变质)and reduce food waste for supermarkets and consumers, researchers have developed new low-cost,smart phone-linked, eco-friendly spoilage sensors for meat and fish packaging.
One in three UK consumers throw away food just because it reaches the use-by date(保存期),but 60%(4.2 million tonnes)of the £12.5 billion-worth of food we throw away each year is safe to eat.
The researchers, whose findings were published in ACS Sensors, say the sensors could also eventually replace the use-by date-a widely used indicator of being fresh and eatable.
The sensors cost two US cents each to make.Known as"paper-based electrical gas sensors(PEGS)",they detect spoilage gases like ammonia(a poisonous gas with a strong unpleasant smell)in meat and fish products. The information provided by the electronic nose is received by a smart phone, and then you can know whether the food is fresh and safe to eat.
The Imperial College London researchers who developed PEGS made the sensors by printing carbon electrodes(电极)onto a special type of paper. The materials are eco-friendly and harmless,so they don't damage the environment and are safe to use in food packaging. The sensors, combined with a tiny electronic system, then inform nearby mobile devices, which identify and understand the data about spoilage gases.
Lead author Dr Firat Guder,of Imperial's Department of Bioengineering, said, "Although they're designed to keep us safe,use-by dates can lead to eatable food being thrown away. They don't always reflect its actual freshness. In fact, people often get sick from foodborne diseases due to poor storage, even when an item is within its use-by date.
"These sensors are cheap enough so we hope to see supermarkets using them within three years. Our goal is to use PEGS in food packaging to reduce unnecessary food waste."
The authors hope that PEGS could have applications beyond food processing, like sensing chemicals in agriculture, air quality, and detecting disease markers in breath like those involved in kidney disease.
12. What is the function of PEGS according to the text?
A. To improve the service of stores.
B. To help supermarkets store foods.
C. To improve the taste of food products.
D. To help people test food freshness.
13. What role does the smartphone play while PEGS are functioning?
A. It acts as an electronic nose.
B. It reads the data collected by PEGS.
C. It discovers the spoilage gases from foods.
D. It helps print the gas sensors onto paper.
14. What does Dr Firat Guder say about use-by dates?
A. They are not completely reliable.
B. They can help reduce food waste.
C. They are not accepted by consumers.
D. They are based on scientific research.
15. What does the author mainly talk about in the text?
A. The process of researching spoilage sensors.
B. A new technology in packaging to reduce food waste.
C. Use-by dates 'influence on supermarkets and consumers.
D. The application of spoilage sensors beyond food processing.

第二节 读后续写(满分 20 分)
57. 读后续写
A couple of months before I started high school, my parents gave me the greatest gift any teenage boy could ask for: a cellphone. I lived on that phone all summer with my face buried in its screen. I ignored my family and my surroundings. Being connected was more important than being present.
So, you can imagine my displeasure when I learned what my dad had planned for our family vacation that year. “This year,” my dad said, “we’ll be doing something special. We’re going camping!” His excitement was met with a disappointed sigh. It wasn’t my dream vacation because mind was on my phone. I was so buried in the screen, in fact, that the first time I can remember truly looking up was when we drove across a bridge on the way to our campsite.
I stared out the window and saw redwoods towering above us, their branches threatening to pierce (刺破) the blue sky. I saw a roaring river, with slivers of silky black water appearing between crashing white rapids. The air blowing into the car from the open windows was hot. But none of that mattered to me. The reason I had looked up was for something far more serious: my phone no longer had service.
The last hour of the drive was increasingly tense. My dad announced that he had chosen a campsite that had no cell service, and that my phone would be useless until we returned home. I would be trapped in the forest for four days with no way to contact the outside world! I went through the full cycle of teenage emotions during the first day of the trip. I raged. I bargained. I begged. I flip-flopped (转变) from a depressive state to anger and back.
I went to bed angrily that night. But when I awoke in the morning, something had changed.

【答案】8. A 9. B 10. D 11. A

【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. B

注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

Instead of burying myself in my phone, I focused on something else: my surroundings.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next four days passed in a flash with many fun activities.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Instead of burying myself in my phone, l focused on something else: my surroundings. I let the noise of the wilderness wash over me, animals and bugs creating a ruckus that was both loud and serene at the same time. My anger turned to peace, then little interest and, finally, excitement. Standing on the high campsite, I felt the weight of stress melt from my shoulders as I viewed the vast expanse that unfolded below me. The sight that met my startled eyes nearly took my breath away. For the first time, I thought camping in a place that had no cell service might not be so bad.
The next four days passed in a flash with many fun activities. I hiked. I swam. I fished. My dad and I learned how to start a fire together after several false starts. We cooked together and I ate the sweetest marshmallows I had ever tasted. Dad told me stories of his life, stories I had never heard or perhaps I hadn’t been listening. When the weekend came to an end, I realized I hadn’t thought of my phone once. I hadn’t felt the need to be connected to anywhere else. It dawned on me that what mattered most were the moments I was sharing with just my father and nature.
