Do you feel lonely when your best friend isn’t around? Here’s our advice to you and to all kids who feel lonely sometimes.
It’s hard when a best friend isn’t around—maybe because he or she moved to a different school or different class. You may feel left out during breaks or lunchtime. You want to make new friends, but how do you find them? Maybe it seems like everybody else already has friends. But remember, there’s always room for more friends.
Start by looking around your classroom—think about which kids you’d like to play with during breaks. Look for chances to say hi to them, smile, and be friendly. Offer to share something or express your appreciation (欣赏) to them. Invite someone to play with you or say “Do you want to sit here?” in the lunch room. When you’re at break, walk over to kids you want to play with, act kindly, and say “Hi, may I join you?” or just join in.
If you have trouble with this or if you’re feeling shy, ask your teachers to help you make new friends. Teachers are usually pretty good at matching people up. The best way to make friends is to be a friend. Being kind, being friendly, sharing, saying nice things, offering help—pretty soon, you’ll have one, two or ever more new friends.
You might still miss that special best friend. But when you see each other again, you can share something you didn’t have before he or she left. You can introduce him or her to your new friends!

40.What can we learn from the passage?

Dear Li Hua,
You changed a lot when you had the phone two months ago. Now as soon as you come back home from school, the first thing you will do is to spend time on it. In the past, you would do your homework and then help me with chores. It’s also not a good idea to use your phone while you are doing homework although it helps you find the answers, because you seem to make more mistakes in exams. Finally, this month you will have geography and biology exams. It matters a lot. So I think you should give up your phone for the exams. Have a try!
Love,
Mom

Social media (媒体), games, apps might seem silly to you, but they help me to share the same topics with my friends. I promise to cut down the time I spend on my phone. To be honest, geography and biology exams are just a piece of cake for me. But giving it up is not good in the long term.
Love,
Li Hua

Nowadays, most of our lives are saved online. We set up email and online shopping accounts (账号); we download (下载) music, movies, games and e-books; we share things on Weibo and WeChat. Together, these things make up our “digital legacy (数字遗产)”. 71
US Company Apple is testing a new digital legacy service. With it, you can pass on your personal data (数据) such as photos, videos, notes and other things to your friends or family members. In fact, there are two kinds of digital legacy. One is things that we buy with money. 72 Dealing with these is a problem.
73 The Internet companies do. You only have a right to use them. For example, your Taobao account might be closed by the company if you haven’t used it for more than six months.
74 “Whether social media accounts, like WeChat and Weibo, can be passed is a question, because they are highly personal,” said Wang Cheng, a professor at Beijing University.
But some people have different ideas. A Chinese girl Gao Yixin said that, “As a member of the online world, I would like to leave my digital legacy behind. For me, death is not the end, being forgotten is. 75 Through this digital legacy, younger people can learn from the experiences of my life and share my happiness and sadness.”
A.What can we do with our legacy when our last day comes?
B.Although you may create your accounts, you don’t really own them.
C.However, you don’t have full control over any accounts until you create them.
D.The digital footprint that I create will be the connection (联结) with the living.

Several years ago, a couple left their job and sold everything in their home to travel around the world with their 13-year-old daughter. And the girl left school to travel with her parents. Will you stop studying to travel like the girl? Here are some students’ opinions.
Wang Le, 14, from Zhejiang:
I think it is a really good way to practice our communication skills by speaking English. If we travel with our parents around the world, we have to talk to others, especially in English. And there are not so many chances for that at school. So I think we should travel like them.
Zhang Qiwen, 14, from Jiangsu:
I will travel with my parents. Why do we study? We go to school to learn more about the world. If we have a better way to learn about it, why don’t we do it? We can see lots of amazing things when we travel around the world with our parents. Having classes at school is boring and useless. I like traveling better.
Zhang Yuxi, 15, from Shanghai:
It is too dangerous to stop studying to travel. Our parents can’t make sure that they know everything. There are lots of dangers in a completely strange environment. We can’t take the risk of putting ourselves in danger. If we do, we’ll be really foolish.
Wang Quan, 14, from Beijing:
I think we have enough time to study at school as well as do some traveling. We need to study at school because it makes sure that we won’t fall behind our peers (同龄人). And we can also travel in the summer or winter holidays. It helps us to broaden our horizon (拓宽视野) and learn things not in books. But I don’t think it is a good idea to stop studying to travel.
Will you stop studying to travel?
Different opinions
Wang Le
The school can’t 76 to us to practice communicating in English.
Zhang Qiwen
Traveling is a better way to learn more about the world.
Traveling is much 77 than having class at school.

81.例文:
Dear teachers and fellow students,
Today my speech topic is “Learning to get along with our parents”. In the past, I felt it was hard to get along well with my parents. I used to argue with my parents and not even talk to each other for days, because they paid too much attention to my study and only cared about my grades, which made me stressed.
Later, I had a good, open conversation with them. I told them about my anxiety and stress, and promised that I would study hard on my own. In the end, they chose to believe in me, and I lived up to their expectations. Now, my grades in all subjects are good. I also have a lot of time to do what I like. Sometimes, I also help them do some housework so that they can have time to have a rest.
A good parent-child relationship is very important. I hope everyone can get along well with their parents.
That’s all for my speech. Thank you.
