When I was in Grade Eight, our physics (物理) teacher gave us a challenge to make a paper plane of any shape. The only goal (目的) was to get it to fly as far as possible. I had many paper-making skills, so I made the best plane I could, and it flew pretty far.
One boy made the simplest paper plane. He stood there at the starting line with a normal piece of flat (平的) paper. Several minutes later, he took the piece of paper and made it into a ball, then threw it down the hallway. We were so shocked at what he did. We never expected things to happen like that. He beat all of us easily.
Some of the students got angry and said that he cheated.
The physics teacher said, “How so? He doesn’t do anything wrong because a paper ball is a shape, too. I like his idea.”
Yes, the boy didn’t cheat. He just finished the task (任务) in a different way. In our life, what we have learned turns into our experience. We do everything according to it. However, our experience gets in the way of our development sometimes. It stops us from coming up with new ideas, and it is bad for our creativity. So it is really necessary for us to learn to think outside of our experience. Then we may discover more and easier ways so that we can have a better result. Just like the boy in the story, we should think creatively.
28. The writer’s paper plane flew pretty far because he was good at ________.

B. Don’t do things according to our experience.
C. It’s important for us to learn others’ experience.
D. We should learn to think outside of our experience.

There were several kinds of greetings in ancient (古代的) China. Among them, fist and palm salute was quite common. Today, though Chinese would usually shake hands when meeting friends, people would still make fist and palm salutes when they are paying a visit to someone during the traditional Chinese New Year or attending someone’s birthday reception (接待).
Fist and palm salute is one of the typical Chinese etiquette (礼仪) with a history of more than 3000 years. In ancient times, if people met a stranger (陌生人), their hands were always ready to hold something used for fighting. Holding hands together showed that people could feel relaxed (放松的). Later it became the etiquette when meeting each other and showing thanks. In modern China, fist and palm salute has been used a lot on traditional occasions (场合).
The gesture of fist and palm salute: Firstly, stand straight. If you are a man, let your right hand be a half fist (拳头), and then your left hand hold your right hand in front of your chest (胸部). Watch each other in the eyes, raise both of your hands to your brow (额头), bent down and shake hands towards each other gently for three times. Meanwhile, you could say some lucky greeting words such as “gong xi fa cai” (Wish you much money), “ni hao” (Hello), “xing hui” (Nice to meet you), “xin nian kuai le” (Happy New Year) to each other according to different occasions. It’s believed that people considered the left as the important side for men in Chinese history, while for women, the important side is the right. So, if you are a woman, you should make fist and palm salute in the other way—put your right hand on your left hand. At last, please remember when someone makes fist and palm salute to you, you need to do it back as well.

A big strong bird flies high in the sky. It’s a bald eagle. Americans like to watch the beautiful bird. It is strong and free. They made it their national bird.
The bald eagle is not really bald. It has white feathers on its tail and head. The feathers on the rest of its body are brown. Bald eagles are large birds. A bald eagle weighs between 6 and 14 pounds (磅). Bald eagles’ bones (骨头) are empty inside. So their bones are light. That is why birds can fly. A bald eagle has long wings (翅膀) to help it fly high. Each wing can be seven or eight feet (英尺) long.
Bald eagles like eating fish. They have good eyes. When they fly over the water, they can see a fish a mile away. The eagle flies down and catch the fish with its feet. Bald eagles also eat some small animals. Rabbits and mice are the animals which they like to hunt (猎食).
Bald eagles build nests (巢) in the tallest trees they can find. The nest is a safe place for baby eagles to grow. The mother bald eagle lays one or three eggs each year. Both parents take care of the eggs. The parents take turns finding food and feeding the babies. After 12 weeks, the young eagles are ready to fly away.
Bald eagles often live near lakes and rivers where fish swim and tall trees grow. They also live near the sea. They can be found in most states in the United States. Hawaii is the only state that doesn’t have bald eagles. In Alaska and Canada, people can also see a large number of bald eagles.
Hunting and pollution made bald eagles in the United States in danger. The number of them decreased (减少) rapidly. The government made laws to protect them. Now, stopping hunting and cutting down pollution have allowed more and more bald eagles to come back.

But the children and grandparents couldn’t communicate with each other well because of the generation gap (代沟). What’s more, most of the grandparents could hardly read or write. The children really needed help with their homework at home.
Ye started helping these children in the summer of 2002. The students come to his home after school and during summer and winter vacations. They don’t need to pay anything for the tutoring (辅导). Sitting at the desk around Ye’s bed, they always listen to Ye carefully.
Many of Ye’s students have entered high school and even become college students. Seeing the children improve with his help, Ye is quite happy.

Ye Haitao, a 44-year-old man with paralysis (瘫痪) has helped over 300 children with school lessons for free over the last 21 years.
When Ye was young, he dreamed to be a teacher. He thought educating people was the greatest thing in the world. At the age of 16, he went to university. He studied hard to improve himself for his dream. However, illness got in the way of Ye’s study and life. In the second year of his university, he was so sick that he had to give up his study. Day by day, he couldn’t walk, stand or even sit. He could only lie down in bed all day.
One day some villagers came to Ye’s home for help because the left-children (留守儿童) had problems. Some villagers went to big cities to search for a job, leaving behind their children and parents.
【答案】例文
An Unforgettable After-school Activity
We have taken part in many interesting and meaningful school activities during the past three years such as doing sports, climbing mountains and so on. I think that participating in sports makes us healthy and beneficial to physical and mental development.
Last spring sports meeting, I took part in the 1000 meter race in our school. The purpose of the activity is to encourage students to exercise. At first, I thought it was nothing, but in the middle of the race, I found it difficult to breathe and couldn’t run any more. But when I heard the cheers from the students, I persisted and finally got the fifth place.
Although I didn’t get a good place, I was very happy that I could stick to it. I thought this was an unforgettable activity for me. Because I believe that as long as I work hard, I have nothing to regret.
