Montessori was born in Italy in 1870 with progressive parents, who frequently communicated with the country’s leading thinkers and scholars. This enlightened family environment provided Montessori with many advantages over other young girls of the time.
Her mother’s support was vital for some important decisions, such as her further study in a technical school after her elementary education. Her parents’ support also proved to be essential for her decision to study medicine, a field that was dominated by men.
Soon after graduating, in 1896, Montessori began work as a voluntary assistant in a clinic at the University of Rome, where she cared for children with learning difficulties. The rooms were empty, with just a few pieces of furniture. One day, she found that the children were enthusiastically playing with breadcrumbs (面包屑) that had dropped on the floor. It then occurred to her that the origin of some intellectual disabilities could be related with poverty. With the right learning materials, these and other young minds could be trained, Montessori concluded.
The observation would lead Montessori to develop a new method of education that focused on providing better stimulation during the sensitive periods of childhood.
At its centre was the principle (原则) that all the learning materials should be child-sized and designed to appeal to all the senses. In addition, each child should be allowed to move and act freely, and use their creativity and problem-solving skills. Teachers took the role of guides, supporting the children without press or control.
Montessori opened her first Children’s House in 1907. When the Fascists (法西斯主义者) first came into power in Italy in 1922, they welcomed her movement at the beginning. But they soon came to oppose the emphasis on the children’s freedom of expression. Montessori's values had always been about human respect and the rights of children and women, but the Fascists wanted to use her work and her fame.
Things reached a breaking point when the Fascist tried to influence the schools’ educational content, and in 1934 Montessori and her son decided to leave Italy. She didn’t return to her homeland until 1947, and she continued to write about and develop her method until her death in 1952, at the age of 81.
4. What was the main reason for Montessori to develop a new educational method?
A. Her experience as a voluntary assistant in a clinic.
B. Her family’s supportive influence on her education.
C. Her decision to study medicine, a field dominated by men.
D. Her observation of children playing with breadcrumbs happily.
5. What was a central principle of Montessori’s educational method?
A. Focusing on group competition. B. Taking control of children’s action.
C. Providing one-size-fits-all learning materials. D. Creating a free and child-centered environment.
6 Why did Montessori decide to leave Italy in 1934?
A. She was offered a better job in a different country.
B. She was forced to give up her work and her fame.
C. She wanted to avoid the influence from the Fascist.
D. She wanted to explore other countries and cultures.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Montessori in this passage?
A. Enthusiastic and kind. B. Observant and innovative.
C. Cooperative and generous. D. Traditional and emotional.
C
In today’s digital age, where a vast ocean of information is just a click away, the question arises: can one learn too much? Given that no individual can grasp the entirety of human knowledge. However, there exists a phenomenon where excessive learning can lead to inaction, a state of being overwhelmed by too much information.
Consider a situation where you’re eager to achieve a particular goal. You begin by conducting extensive research, diving deep into the subject. As you absorb more information, it paradoxically (矛盾地) feels like your understanding weakens. Each new concept or strategy reveals further layers, making the goal seem more complex and out of reach.
This situation is a common trap: the endless pursuit of more information. Although gaining comprehensive knowledge is valuable that is to say there’s nothing wrong with learning a lot, issues arise when this pursuit obstructs practical application. If learning continuously prevents you from starting, you’ll find yourself stuck, unable to achieve your desired outcomes.
An alternative and more effective approach to achieving goals is to strike a balance between learning and doing. Gather essential information, then transition into action swiftly, even if you feel somewhat unprepared. This is often the best way to learn, as hands-on experience provides insights that theoretical knowledge alone cannot.
The comparison with a baby learning to walk is a good example here. A baby doesn’t learn to walk by sitting and analyzing the process. Instead, it learns by attempting to walk, falling, and then understanding from each fall what works and what doesn’t. Through repeated effort, walking is eventually mastered. This method is applicable to goal achievement too. By engaging in action, learning from the outcomes, and adjusting accordingly, you gradually move closer to your goals.
In summary, while the pursuit of knowledge is valuable, it’s crucial not to let it become a barrier to action. Learning should be a stepping stone to doing, not an end in itself. It’s through the interplay of gathering knowledge and applying it that we can truly progress towards our ambitions.
8. What stops people from achieving the goal?
A. The distraction caused by unrelated tasks.
B. The inability to find relevant information.
C. The confusion caused by the information.
D. The desire to learn basic concept or strategy.
9. What does the author try to advocate in paragraph 3&4?
A. Sticking to continuous learning B. Taking practical action without delay.
C. Gaining as much knowledge as possible. D. Prioritizing theoretical knowledge in study.
10. Why is the example “baby learning to walk” mentioned in Paragraph 5?
A. To compare different learning styles.
B. To show the importance of making mistakes.
C To emphasize the need for parental guidance.
D. To illustrate learning through action and experience.
11. What makes the best title for the passage?
A. The Harmony of Learning and Doing. B. The Process of Accessing Information.
C. The Pursuit of Advanced Knowledge. D. The significance of Hands-on Experience.
D
Even if you haven’t held a conversation with Siri or Alexa, you’ve likely encountered a chatbot online. They often appear in a chat window that pops up with a friendly greeting: Thank you for visiting our site. How can I help you today? Depending on the site, the chatbot is programmed to respond accordingly and even ask follow-up questions.
Chatbots are a form of conversational AI designed to simplify human interaction with computers. They are programmed to simulate human conversation and exhibit intelligent behavior that is equivalent to that of a human.
Chatbots communicate through speech or text. Both rely on artificial intelligence technologies like machine learning and natural language processing (NLP), which is a branch of artificial intelligence that teaches machines to read, analyze and interpret human language. This technology gives chatbots a baseline for understanding language structure and meaning. NLP, in essence, allows the computer to understand what you are asking and how to appropriately respond.
With developments in deep learning and reinforcement learning, chatbots can interpret more complexities in language and improve the dynamic nature of conversation between human and machine. Essentially, a chatbot tries to match what you’ve asked to an intent that it understands. The more a chatbot communicates with you, the more it understands and the more it learns to communicate like you and others with similar questions. Your positive responses reinforce its answers, and then it uses those answers again.
From customer service chatbots online to personal assistants in our homes, chatbots have started to enter our lives. In almost every industry, companies are using chatbots to help customers easily navigate their websites, answer simple questions and direct people to the relevant points of contact. Personal assistants like Siri and Alexa are designed to respond to a wide range of scenarios and queries, from current weather and news updates to personal calendars, music selections and random questions.
12. Why does the author mention Siri and Alexa in Paragraph 1?
A. To explain how a chatbot works. B. To show where to find a chatbot.
C. To give examples of chatbots. D. To compare different chatbots.
13. What is the basis of chatbots?
A Language study. B. Data transmission.
C. Social interaction. D. Natural language processing.
14. What does the underlined word “reinforce” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Inspire. B. Strengthen. C. Organize. D. Match.
15. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The future trend of chatbots. B. The author’s predictions.
C. The effects of chatbots. D. The applications of chatbots.

Apologizing for a mistake might seem difficult, but it will help you repair and improve your relationships with others after that offense (冒犯).
Acknowledge the offense. This is an essential element of a good apology. ___16___Apologies are most likely to be well-received if you show that you recognize who was responsible and who was harmed. For example, saying “I made a mistake” is more effective than saying“mistakes were made”, which fails to clarify responsibility.
___17___In some cases, it’s helpful to explain an offense, especially to explain that it was not intentional and that it will not happen again. But explanations that are long-winded, sound like excuses, or blame the victim (e. g. You were really getting on my nerves.) tend to have an opposite effect.
Express regret.___18___ Expressing these feelings communicates that you recognize and regret the suffering you caused. Be careful of phrases like “That was uncharacteristic of me.” ___19___ Instead, acknowledge your disappointment in yourself and your commitment to improve.
Tell them how you’ll change. Let them know how you’ll change and what you’d do to make that possible. For instance, if you’ve been late once again, instead of just apologizing, share how you’d keep an early alarm to be on time! ___20___
A. Provide a proper explanation.
B. Express your intention clearly.
C. But many apologies don’t do this enough.
D. When you hurt someone, it’s natural to feel shame or regret.
E. A true apology is one where you promise it won’t be repeated again.
F. This might show that you aren’t taking full ownership for what happened.
G. This will enable you to know what means the most to the offended person.

When I was a boy, I always wore turtleneck shirts because I was so sensitive and shy. I worked hard to earn exceptional marks and always tried to behave well. I was younger than everyone else because my good marks had allowed me to skip second grade, but this added nothing to my already low self-confidence.
When I was 14, my parents divorced (离婚). I moved in with my dad in a new neighborhood, but he was always so busy and had little time for me. It seemed the only time he ever spoke to me was to be demanding or critical. I began to hate coming home from school every day. I sank further into my low self-esteem (自尊心) and was overwhelmed with feeling unappreciated and alone.
One day, my aunt called. This seemed like a miracle (奇迹) to me. Aunt Ginette usually only called once a year, on my birthday. She said she had just seen some young teenagers participate in a public speaking contest, and she thought I should try it, too. She told me she firmly believed I could perform on stage like the other kids since she had seen me do skits (幽默小品) for the family at Christmas.
I was a little surprised. Me? Onstage? In a public speaking contest? I was hesitant. But Aunt Ginette was so confident and seemed really serious. Feeling her strong belief, I went against all odds and agreed to enter the contest.
All that winter, twice a week after dinner, I took three different buses for the three-hour round-trip to practice in Ville d’Anjou, where the competition would take place. Although my dad really did love me and wanted the best for me, he disapproved of this new dream, fearing it would take away from my homework time and impact my academic performance. But I remained a top performer in school and never missed a day.
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
Four months later, the big night arrived.

Montessori was born in Italy in 1870 with progressive parents, who frequently communicated with the country’s leading thinkers and scholars. This enlightened family environment provided Montessori with many advantages over other young girls of the time.
Her mother’s support was vital for some important decisions such as her further study in a technical school after her elementary education.
6. Why did Montessori decide to leave Italy in 1934?
A. She was offered a better job in a different country.
B She was forced to give up her work and her fame.
C. She wanted to avoid the influence from the Fascist.
D. She wanted to explore other countries and cultures.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Montessori in this passage?
A. Enthusiastic and kind. B. Observant and innovative.
C. Cooperative and generous. D. Traditional and emotional.
D 5. D 6. C 7. B

Although gaining comprehensive knowledge is valuable, that is to say there’s nothing wrong with learning a lot, issues arise when this pursuit obstructs practical application.
C The confusion caused by the information.
C. To emphasize the need for parental guidance.
D. To illustrate learning through action and experience.
11. What makes the best title for the passage?
A. The Harmony of Learning and Doing. B. The Process of Accessing Information.
C. The Pursuit of Advanced Knowledge. D. The significance of Hands-on Experience.
C 9. B 10. D 11. A

根据文章第一段“However, there exists a phenomenon where excessive learning can lead to inaction, a state of being overwhelmed by too much information.(然而,有一种现象是,过度学习可能导致无所作为,一种被太多信息淹没的状态。)”
根据文章第三段“This situation is a common trap: the endless pursuit of more information. Although gaining comprehensive knowledge is valuable, that is to say there’s nothing wrong with learning a lot, issues arise when this pursuit obstructs practical application. (这种情况是一个常见的陷阱:无休止地追求更多的信息。虽然获得全面的知识是有价值的,也就是说,学习很多知识并没有错,但当这种追求阻碍了实际应用时,问题就出现了。)”可知,作者认为学习很多知识并没有错,但当这种追求阻碍了实际应用时,就出现了问题,结合第四段中的“An alternative and more effective approach to achieving goals is to strike a balance between learning and doing.(实现目标的另一种更有效的方法是在学习和实践之间取得平衡。)”
根据倒数第三段中的“This is often the best way to learn, as hands-on experience provides insights that theoretical knowledge alone cannot.(这通常是最好的学习方式,因为实践经验提供了理论知识无法提供的见解。)”可知,学习的最好方法是通过实践去积累经验,结合第五段“A baby doesn’t learn to walk by sitting and analyzing the process. Instead, it learns by attempting to walk, falling, and then understanding from each fall what works and what doesn’t. Through repeated effort, walking is eventually mastered. This method is applicable to goal achievement too. By engaging in action, learning from the outcomes, and adjusting accordingly, you gradually move closer to your goals.(婴儿不是通过坐着和分析走路的过程来学习走路的。
根据文章全文,尤其是最后一段“In summary, while the pursuit of knowledge is valuable, it’s crucial not to let it become a barrier to action. Learning should be a stepping stone to doing, not an end in itself. It’s through the interplay of gathering knowledge and applying it that we can truly progress towards our aspirations.(总之,虽然追求知识是有价值的,但重要的是不要让它成为行动的障碍。学习应该是行动的垫脚石,而不是目的本身。只有通过收集知识和应用知识的相互作用,我们才能真正朝着我们的愿望前进。)”可知,在追求知识价值时,不能将其称为行动的障碍,由此可知,本文介绍在学习过程中,应将信息和实践相结合,这样能更好地实现目标,所以题目“学与做的和谐”与本文主旨相符。故选A项。

下文“Apologies are most likely to be well-received if you show that you recognize who was responsible and who was harmed. For example, saying ‘I made a mistake’ is more effective than saying ‘mistakes were made’, which fails to clarify responsibility.(如果你表现出你认识到谁应该负责,谁受到了伤害,那么道歉最有可能被接受。例如,说“我犯了一个错误”比说“犯了错误”更有效,因为“犯了错误”无法明确责任)”通过举例的方式说明道歉要明确,要真诚,为C项“But many apologies don’t do this enough.(但很多道歉都不足以做到这一点)”中提出的问题提供应对策略,上下文语意连贯。故选C项。
【17题详解】
设空处是段首主题句,根据下文“In some cases, it’s helpful to explain an offense, especially to explain that it was not intentional and that it will not happen again. But explanations that are long-winded, sound like excuses, or blame the victim (e. g. You were really getting on my nerves.) tend to have an opposite effect.(在某些情况下,解释一个冒犯是有帮助的,尤其是解释它不是故意的,并且不会再发生。但是,冗长的解释,听起来像借口,或指责受害者(例如,你真的让我心烦意乱)往往会产生相反的效果)”可知,本段主要讲要对冒犯进行合理的解释,所以A项“Provide a proper explanation.(提供一个恰当的解释)”是最佳主题句。故选A项。
根据下文“Expressing these feelings communicates that you recognize and regret the suffering you caused.(表达这些感受表明你认识到并后悔你造成的痛苦)”和指代关系可知,上文中会出现“these feelings”指代的情绪,同时这些情绪和给别人带来痛苦有关,D项“When you hurt someone, it’s natural to feel shame or regret. (当你伤害了别人,感到羞愧或后悔是很自然的)”中“shame or regret”即下文指代对象,同时是给别人带来痛苦后的感受,上下文语意连贯。故选D项。
【19题详解】
上文“Be careful of phrases like ‘That was uncharacteristic of me.’(小心像“那不是我的风格”这样的措词)”提出在表达道歉时,用些措词要慎用,F项“This might show that you aren’t taking full ownership for what happened.(这可能表明你没有为发生的事情承担全部责任)”解释了原因:说“那不是我的风格”说明自己并没有为发生的事情承担全部责任。
上文“Tell them how you’ll change. Let them know how you’ll change and what you’d do to make that possible.(告诉他们你会如何改变。让他们知道你将如何改变,以及你会做些什么来实现这一目标)”提出道歉要承诺改变,给出方法,E项“A true apology is one where you promise it won’t be repeated again.(真正的道歉是你保证不会再犯)”承接上文,说明承诺改变,给出方法才是真正的道歉,照应本段主题。故选E项。

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When I saw my father’s face, his eyes were shining-he was so proud.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Four months later, the big night arrived. Waiting anxiously alongside the other competitors, I couldn’t keep from trembling. Taking a deep breath, I tried my best to control my emotions, murmuring to myself, “You can do it!” Finally, it was my turn. I adjusted my clothes, confidently rose to my feet and strode (大步走) onto the stage. I stood there and firmly began my speech, which I had practiced hundreds of times. Words smoothly flew out of my mouth like a beautiful melody, and it was then that I spotted my father in the audience.
When I saw my father’s face, his eyes were shining-he was so proud. Somehow, I gained energy from his expression and finished the speech smoothly. Sitting by my dad, I waited for the result and the previous tightness was replaced by a sense of relief. Dad gently patted my shoulder, saying, “Well done,” and gave me a big hug. “I now realize how wrong I was to criticize you all the time. I should have appreciated you more.” Hearing this, tears welled up in my eyes, blurring the surroundings. It turned out I got the first prize and we cheered happily. Since then, I have looked at the world with brand-new confidence, heading toward my bright future.
