Ted’s Dream to Fly
Ted Brown’s dream as a child was an unusual one: he wanted to fly. What was more unusual was the way in which he made his dream come true.
After high school, he wanted to join the U. S. Air Force but he failed because of his poor eyesight. However, his dream remained.
At the age of 33, Ted was a truck driver in Los Angeles. One day, while sitting outside in his garden, he watched planes fly overhead and an idea came to him: to use balloons to fly.
A few weeks later, Ted bought 42 huge balloons. He tied them to a chair and then he sat down in the chair with some beer, sandwiches and a gun. His plan was to fly to 10 meters above his garden, enjoy a few hours in the air, and then shoot some balloons with his gun to get back down. But things did not go as he planned.
Once his friends cut the ropes under Ted’s chair, the 42 balloons flew into the sky at an astonishing speed until about 4000 meters above the ground with Ted and his chair. He didn’t shoot any of the balloons because he was afraid he might break the balance of his “plane”. Ted stayed in the sky with his beer and sandwiches for 14 hours, cold and frightened.
Planes heading towards Los Angeles’ busy international airport reported the strange sight. And Ted’s balloons caused great danger to them. At last, Ted gathered his courage to shoot a few balloons and slowly landed on the ground, where many policemen were waiting for him.
Ted made his dream come true, but it cost him: he was fined $ 1,500 for breaking the law about air safety.
When asked by a reporter why he had done it, Ted answered, “A man can’t just sit around and do nothing, he should have his dream and go for it.”
41. Why couldn’t Ted join the American Air Force?
A. Because he was too short.
B. Because his parents stopped him.
C. Because he didn’t finish high school.
D. Because there was problem with his eyes.
42. He was fined $ 1,500 because ________.
A. he took a gun with him B. he used too many balloons
C. he stayed too long in the air D. his balloons caused trouble to planes
43. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. Ted Brown paid the price for his behavior.
B. Ted Brown realized his dream in an unusual way.
C. Encouragement is very important to one's success.
D. Ted Brown became famous because he set a new flying record.
C
Maybe you love them and want to pet every one you see. Or maybe you’re afraid of them and want to move to a dog-free neighborhood. Either way, dogs are a part of life.
Like many kinds of pets—no matter how small or cute they are dogs need to be respected as animals. As you know, dogs may hurt people sometimes. You can respect a dog by following some rules. These rules not only keep the dog happier, they can also protect you from getting hurt
No one wants a dog bite(咬), so how do you prevent(防止) one? The “DOSF” rules may help you.
D: Don’t Tease. Teasing a dog can make it angry and it may bite you. For example, if a dog has food or a toy, never try to take it away.
O: Only Pet With Permission(许可). Never pet a dog before asking for permission from the person who has the dog. Some dogs don’t like to be touched by strangers.
S: Slow Down. Some dogs like to chase(追逐) and bite. Of course, you don’t want them to chase or bite you! The way to prevent it is to go around dogs slowly. Never run straight to them or away from them.
F: Fingers Together. When feeding a dog food, put the food in your hand and keep your fingers close together. If not, the dog may not know which is the food--the doggie snack or your finger!
When you follow the “DOSF” rules, the day can end just the way it should--with happy people, happy dogs, and no dog bites!
44. What does the underlined word “Tease” probably mean?
A. Watch somebody or something. B. Touch somebody or something.
C. Keep a person or an animal happy. D. Make a person or an animal angry.
45. If a dog chases you, you can__________.
A. go around it slowly B. move back quickly
C. run straight to it D. run away from it
46. When feeding a dog food, if you don’t keep your fingers close together, ___.
A. the dog may mistake your finger for snack
B. the dog may think you respect it very much
C. the dog may want to chase you quickly
D. the dog may like the food in your hand more
D
Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not so necessary, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she does his or her best. Here are some tips to help you.
Plan your time carefully. When you plan your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a plan of your time. First, design your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then, decide a good, regular time for studying. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment(娱乐). A weekly plan may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials(资料). No games, radios, or televisions! When sitting down to study, pay enough attention to the subject.
Make good use of your time in class. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teachers say. Really listening in class means less work later. Be an active listener during your class. Avoid distraction. Listening carefully can help you take better notes, understand the material, and remember it at a later date.
Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes. Review the important points that your teacher mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to teach the next day, to read that material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.
Develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be too worried.
There are other methods that might help you with your study. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.
47. In order to concentrate on your subjects, you should just keep ________on your desk.
A. everything B. a radio C. study materials D. a book
48. The underlined word “distraction” in the passage probably means “ ________”.
A. playing B. driving you mad
C. paying no attention D. changing your mind
49. If Kate tried all the ways in the passage for a long time, we can infer(推断)that ________.
A. she solves all her problems now
B. she asks her mother to put games in her study area
C. she goes to some after-school programs to review knowledge
D. she becomes less worried about tests
50. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. How to become a top student. B. How to plan your time.
C. How to study English. D. How to take notes.
八、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共10分,50-52每小题2分,53题4分)
Most people hope to have a memory which helps them succeed in study, work and life. Can memory be improved? Luckily, hundreds of studies in the past 50 years have already given us a definite answer.
A healthy lifestyle keeps your brain young and memory sharp. First of all, it is necessary to have a healthy diet. Eating more food rich in Vitamin B and Vitamin E, such as vegetables and lean meat, helps you have a better memory. Doing exercise can keep your brain alive, too. Proper exercise provides much needed oxygen for the brain. Running, riding a bike, swimming and even walking two or three times a week are helpful. Moreover, getting enough sleep is important. Only when your brain gets a good rest, can it work well. The healthier your lifestyle is, the better your memory will become, but do not expect a sudden change — it takes a long time to make a difference.
Memory skills help you remember things better. The following three are the most widely used. Chunking is a way of remembering a piece of information by cutting it into smaller ones. For example, to memorize a ten-digit telephone number 2127983630, you can divide the digits into three groups: first 212, then 798, and lastly 3630. This method is far more effective than remembering a string of 10 digits. Organization means organizing information into groups of the same kind. For example, trees, grass and flowers are plants; tigers, pandas, horses and cows are animals. Imagery is remembering newly learnt information by using your imagination and connecting it with something that you are familiar with.
However, memory skills will hardly work if you don’t understand the information. Only a regular review can make the memory last long. That is why students are always advised to go over what they have learnt after one day and then after three days, and then use it as regularly as possible.
Human brains are like muscles that need nutrients and exercise to become stronger. If you make a few lifestyle changes and try some memory skills, you can certainly improve your memory.
51. What does proper exercise provide?
_______________________________________________________
52. How can you remember the newly learnt information?
_______________________________________________________
53. Why are students always advised to go over what they have learnt?
_______________________________________________________
54. Do you have a good memory? What can you learn from this passage to help you improve your memory?

B. Because his parents stopped him.
C. Because he didn’t finish high school.
D. Because there was problem with his eyes.

C. run straight to it D. run away from it
46. When feeding a dog food, if you don’t keep your fingers close together, ___.
A. the dog may mistake your finger for snack
B. the dog may think you respect it very much
C. the dog may want to chase you quickly
D. the dog may like the food in your hand more

题目一:
Dear Mary.
How's your vacation going? I'm visiting the Great Wall in Beijing with my family. The Great Wall, which attracts thousands of visitors from the whole world, is one of the seven wonders of the world.
The weather is sunny and hot, and my family are preparing to climb the Great Wall. For me, it's really difficult, so I almost want to give up, however, my parents encourage me again and again. With their encouragement, I'm keeping on climbing. After arriving at the top, we are all amazed by the beauty of the Great Wall, which looks like a dragon. As we all know, the Great Wall is famous not only in China but also around the world.
In brief, we are enjoying ourselves in Beijing now and I'll keep this wonderful journey in mind forever.
Yours,
Li Lei
题目二:
October 1st, Cloudy
Last weekend, our school organized a school trip to Sun Farm, where we enjoyed ourselves a lot.
We took a car there and the farmer welcomed us warmly. There were lots of animals on the farm, so we decided to do some interesting activities, such as milking cows, feeding chickens and so on. Everyone felt excited like birds out of cage. We took quite a few photos. The apples planted by the farmer were so sweet that we ate a lot. In the afternoon, we talked with the farmer and he taught us how to grow some plants patiently.
Though we were tired, we learned a lot and got closer to nature, which would be the best memory for us. And I couldn't help wondering how I would feel if I could stay there every day!
