(二) Bright and early on the morning of our first full day in Antarctica, L’ Austral’s Captain Fabien’s voice woke us up as it came through a loudspeaker. If we looked outside right now, he said, we’d see a beautiful sea of icebergs in the golden sunlight. My sister and I jumped out of bed, staring in amazement as we sailed past giant pieces of ice. In the distance, we spotted a group of humpback whales feeding on smaller fishes. Next door, my parents were also waking up to the sights of a new day in Antarctica. Over breakfast, my sister and I excitedly told them about the whales we saw from our room that morning. You might not immediately think of “family vacation” when talking about a trip to Antarctica, but tour companies like Adventures by Disney are changing that. The company offers guided group trips to destinations across all seven continents in the world. Our adventure started when we flew to Buenos Aires and explored the beautiful Argentine capital for a day. After leaving Buenos Aires, we flew to Ushuaia on an Adventures by Disney plane. Then, it was the journey toward the Drake Passage. After a speedy Drake Passage crossing, we reached Antarctica early, adding a half day to our scheduled four days on and around the continent. To those unfamiliar with Adventures by Disney, the fact that you can experience Antarctica — the most distant, extreme continent — with Disney might be surprising. During the trip, there were thoughtful acts, from stamped postcards to send from an Antarctica post office to a champagne (香槟) party on our final stop of the journey; Adventures by Disney truly thought of everything for us. Antarctica is a life-changing destination packed with experiences that can’t be copied. We experienced seasickness when travelling across the Drake Passage, hiked up ice hills alongside lovely animals, and had a taste of champagne. And honestly, it’s going to be hard for the next family trip we may take to compete. 4.How did the author and her sister feel when sailing past the icebergs? A.Frightened. B.Confused. C.Surprised. D.Embarrassed. 5.What happened first on the author's journey? A.They flew to Ushuaia. B.They toured around Buenos Aires. C.They passed through the Drake Passage. D.They hiked up ice hills alongside lovely animals. 6.What can we infer about their travel from the last paragraph? A.The author might feel bad when crossing the Drake Passage. B.The author was the most impressed by the champagne party. C.The author believes that their next travel will be more thrilling. D.The author thought an Antarctica post office should be established. 7.Which can serve as the best title for the text? A.Exploring Antarctica — A Place with Various Animals B.An Antarctic Adventure for Scientific Research C.A Comfortable Travel Experience D.A Family’s Journey to Antarctica (三) Two and a half months before the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season officially begins, and almost six months before it enters its peak (高峰), weathermen are already predicting (预测) that it could be particularly active. Officially, hurricane season begins from June 1 and runs through November. One reason is that sea surface temperatures in the tropical (热带的) Atlantic are already at record highs. Meanwhile, another significant potential factor in this year’s hurricane season is taking shape thousands of miles away in the Pacific. Over periods ranging from three to seven years, the waters of the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean warm and cool in turn as a result of a repeating climate pattern called the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). El Niño makes Atlantic hurricanes less likely to form but La Niña does. During the 2023 season, ENSO was in an El Niño period. However, by the time the 2024 season starts, it will have changed into a “neutral(中立)” period, but that by the peak months, it is likely to have changed fully into a La Niña. “How quickly that change occurs can affect everything as well,” says DaSilva, a lead hurricane weatherman. “There’s a lag time. So, while we expect the change to occur in mid-summer, it may not be until late summer or fall where we really see those effects across the Atlantic basin.” As a result, he says, this year’s hurricane season could remain particularly active deep into November. Of course, no report can predict when individual storms will come or the paths they will take, but DaSilva warns that those who live in areas likely to suffer hurricanes, especially around the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, should prepare. “If a tropical storm system comes into this area, it could rapidly strengthen, potentially close to land,” he also warns. “And that’s why people need to be careful and have their hurricane plans ready. Because any system with these kinds of conditions can explode very quickly. That’s what we’re concerned about.” 8.What is the function of Paragraph 1? A.To give advice. B.To explain the season. C.To introduce the topic. D.To inform a weather report. 9.What is a reason for this year’s hurricane season? A.The hurricane season has entered its peak. B.A repeating climate has changed weather in summer. C.The sea surface temperatures are the highest of all time. D.El Niño makes Atlantic hurricanes more likely to form. 10.What do the underlined words “a lag time” in Paragraph 5 probably mean? A.A time delay. B.A time in a zone. C.A time waste. D.A time in advance. 11.What does DaSilva agree with about this year’s hurricane season? A.It can be exactly predicted ahead of time. B.People needn’t worry about hurricane season. C.It may be eventually controlled by weathermen. D.People can’t be more careful about hurricane season. (四) Gitanjali Rao, Colorado teenager who invented mobile device to test for lead (铅) in drinking water, was Time’s Kid of the Year for 2020. The magazine announced the award on Thursday, citing Rao’s ability to apply scientific ideas to real-world problems and her desire to motivate other kids to take up their own causes. It was just the latest recognition for Rao, 15, who was named last year to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list. She won praise in 2017 after she responded to the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, by creating a device named Tehys, using carbon nanotube sensors to detect (探测) lead in water. The Lone Tree, Colo., native was named America’s Top Young Scientist when she was in the seventh grade. She went on to cooperate with scientists in the water industry to try to get the device on the market. More recently, Rao has developed a phone and Web tool named Kindly, which uses artificial intelligence technology to detect possible early signs of cyberbullying (网络欺凌). “You type in a word or phrase, and it’s able to pick it up if it’s bullying, and it gives you the choice to edit it or send it the way it is,” Rao told Time. “The goal is not to punish people. As a teenager I know teenagers tend to become very angry sometimes. Instead, it gives you the chance to rethink what you’re saying so that you know what to do next time around.” Rao was chosen in part because of the way she has followed up her technical work with efforts to get other young people to work on solving the problems they see. “I don’t look like your typical scientist. Everything I see on TV is that it’s an older, usually white man as a scientist,” she told Time. “My goal has really shifted, not only from creating my own devices to solve the world’s problems, but inspiring others to do the same as well. So I really want to put out that message: If I can do it, you can do it, and anyone can do it.” 12.What made Gitaniali Rao Time’s Kid of the Year for 2020? A.Her desire to guide other kids. B.Her invention of testing lead in water. C.Her idea of making devices commercial. Many of the strategies for effective face-to-face learning also apply to online learning. 16 Here are some strategies we recommend: Create space to learn. Invest some time to understand your needs and preferences as a learner, and what an effective study environment looks like for you. For example, you might need a quiet place to study, or you might need to listen to classical music. Consider what equipment you might need. Wherever you study, try to minimize distractions. 17 Manage your time effectively. Spend some time getting familiar with your online courses, understanding what is expected of you, mapping out key deadlines, and planning study time. 18 Research shows that learners gain more information if they spread their study over multiple days or sessions. Make sure your routine works with your other commitments so you’re more likely to stick to it. 19 Just as with face-to-face learning, mental energy matters: take time to reflect on whether you have understood the materials, try to remember and sort the information you have learned to aid memory, test your understanding, mix different concepts and skills into the same study session to build connections and fluency, ask questions, participate in class discussions, and try teaching concepts to others. Ask for assistance! In an online learning environment, you may need to ask lots of questions and take ownership over shaping the learning experience so that it meets your needs. 20 Finally, if you’re facing specific challenges such as illness, mental health, accessibility, balancing childcare responsibilities, etc., it’s important for you to reach out to your instructors or the relevant student support services for discussion and creative problem-solving. A.Regularly reflect on the course materials. B.A long-term routine will help you stay on track. C.Actively review and apply what you have learned. D.However, online learning may require some additional skills to be successful. E.At the end of the week, reflect on how you did, and adjust your routine as required. F.This might mean asking your instructors or peers for help, or attending study groups. G.Work with your roommates or family to create personal space so you can stay focused. (二) Top tips to study in the US Studying abroad as an international student is an exciting and life-changing experience, but it also comes with some challenges. Here is a list of practical tips that can give you a hand. 21 One of the first and most crucial steps for international students is to create a budget. Understand your source of income, including scholarships, part-time jobs, or financial support from your family. Then, make a complete list of expected expenses, including tuition, accommodation, food, transportation, and entertainment. This budget will be your financial roadmap and help you avoid overspending. Select a place to live Choosing the right place to live is very important. University accommodations are often convenient but can be expensive. 22 . They can be more cost-effective and offer a richer cultural experience. Be sure to research local housing laws, and thoroughly examine any rental property (房地产) before signing a contract. Understand your insurance (保险) Healthcare systems are greatly various from one country to another. Ensure you have the necessary health insurance coverage (覆盖范围). Many universities offer affordable student health plans. 23 . Manage your time Balancing study, part-time work and personal time can be challenging. 24 . Time management apps and tools can help you stay organized. Be open-minded and adaptable Living independently in a foreign country can be challenging, but it is also an opportunity for personal growth and self-discovery. You can take some steps to improve your confidence by applying confident body language. Make eye contact. Making eye contact with another person is a great way to show confidence. People will treat you with more respect if you are able to look them in the eyes. 27 That can make the other person feel uncomfortable. Stay visible (引人注目的). Never hide behind your hair or curl up (蜷缩) in a ball. Confident people have body language that presents they deserve(值得) to be there. So keep your hair off your face. 28 Besides, you should sit tall. Make sure you’re sitting up straight with your head up. Keep Smiling. A sincere smile makes you look better and friendlier, but did you know it also helps you feel better? Studies have found that even forcing yourself to smile can lighten your mood. 29 Smiling makes you look more comfortable, and can even make you more memorable. Being a teenager is not an easy time. (四) On hearing the word vacation, most people react positively. Experienced travelers will argue that more important than where they go on vacation is who they go with. 31 Family travel is special and creates lasting memories, but it can also have some challenges. For one, the success of a trip often depends on the relationships that the family members have with one another. If two brothers do not get along at home, the chances are that they will fight during a vacation. 32 If a family is traveling by air, purchasing plane tickets for everyone can be very expensive. 33 Close friends often have similar personalities, so they generally get along with each other and fight less than family members might on a trip. Furthermore, if friends are close, even a terrible trip will not ruin the friendship. 34 All in all, traveling with friends can be a positive experience that results in a great vacation and, likely, a stronger friendship. Finally, people can choose to travel alone. Solo travelers can be more flexible with transportation than those traveling in a large group. 35 And they also have better chances of getting a seat on buses or planes since they only need one. In addition, solo travelers are more likely to meet locals or other vacationers because they are more likely to want to talk with others. A.They can change plans more easily. B.Each person tends to cover his or her individual expenses. C.Another potential problem of family travel is transportation. D.Sightseeing and scheduling are not a problem for solo travelers. E.In fact, friendships are often strengthened with the travel memories. F.Traveling with friends can be an unforgettable experience for several reasons. G.Vacations can be classified on the basis of who vacationers choose to travel with. 三、完形填空 (一) Les Brown is one of the world’s greatest 36 . A.Exploring Antarctica — A Place with Various Animals B.An Antarctic Adventure for Scientific Research C.A Comfortable Travel Experience D.A Family’s Journey to Antarctica 【答案】4.C 5.B 6.A 7.D 【导语】这是一篇记叙文。文章主要介绍作者及其家人的南极洲之旅。 4.细节理解题。根据文章第一段“If we looked outside right now, he said, we’d see a beautiful sea of icebergs in the golden sunlight. My sister and I jumped out of bed, staring in amazement as we sailed past giant pieces of ice.(他说,如果我们现在往外面看,就会看到金色阳光下美丽的冰山海。我和妹妹从床上跳了起来,惊讶地看着我们驶过一块块巨大的冰块。)”可知,作者和她的妹妹航行经过冰山时感觉很惊讶。故选C。 5.细节理解题。根据文章第三段“Our adventure started when we flew to Buenos Aires and explored the beautiful Argentine capital for a day.(我们的冒险开始于我们飞往布宜诺斯艾利斯,在美丽的阿根廷首都探索了一天。)”可知,在作者的旅程中首先游览了布宜诺斯艾利斯。故选B。 6.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“We experienced seasickness when travelling across the Drake Passage, hiked up ice hills alongside lovely animals, and had a taste of champagne.(我们在穿越德雷克海峡时经历了晕船,和可爱的动物一起爬上了冰山,还品尝了香槟。)”可推知,作者在穿越德雷克海峡时可能会感觉很糟糕。故选A。 7.主旨大意题。根据文章第二段“You might not immediately think of “family vacation” when talking about a trip to Antarctica, but tour companies like Adventures by Disney are changing that. (说到南极之旅,你可能不会马上想到“家庭度假”,但像迪士尼冒险这样的旅游公司正在改变这种情况。)”和文章最后一段“And honestly, it’s going to be hard for the next family trip we may take to compete.(老实说,我们下一次的家庭旅行可能会很艰难。)”可知,文章主要介绍作者及其家人的南极洲之旅。故选D。 (三) Two and a half months before the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season officially begins, and almost six months before it enters its peak (高峰), weathermen are already predicting (预测) that it could be particularly active. 结合全文及文章第一段“Two and a half months before the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season officially begins, and almost six months before it enters its peak (高峰), weathermen are already predicting that it could be particularly active. One reason is that sea surface temperatures in the tropical Atlantic are already at record highs. (官方上,飓风季节从6月1日开始,持续至11月。原因之一是热带大西洋的海表温度已达到创纪录的高水平。)”可知,海面温度是有史以来最高是是今年飓风季节的原因之一。故选C项。 10.词义猜测题。根据文章第五段划线后“So, while we expect the change to occur in mid-summer, it may not be until late summer or fall where we really see those effects across the Atlantic basin. (因此,尽管我们预计变化将在仲夏时节发生,但直到晚夏或秋季,大西洋盆地才可能真正感受到这些影响。)”可推知,存在一个滞后时间,故划线词与A项“时间延迟”意义相近。故选A项。 11.细节理解题。根据文章最后一段““If a tropical storm system comes into this area, it could rapidly strengthen, potentially close to land,” he also warns. “And that’s why people need to be careful and have their hurricane plans ready. Because any system with these kinds of conditions can explode very quickly. That’s what we’re concerned about.” (“如果一个热带风暴系统进入这个区域,它可能会在接近陆地时迅速加强,”他还警告说,“这就是为什么人们需要小心并准备好飓风应对计划。因为在这些条件下,任何系统都可能迅速增强。这是我们所担心的”)”可知,人们对于飓风季节的警惕性再怎么高也不为过。故选D项。 (四) Gitanjali Rao, Colorado teenager who invented mobile device to test for lead (铅) in drinking water, was Time’s Kid of the Year for 2020. The major difference is that instruction is delivered online.
