Called kuaizi in Chinese, chopsticks were developed in China about 5,000 years ago. Often made of wood, chopsticks allow users to pick up pieces of food by holding together and releasing (松开) the sticks with the thumb (拇指) and first three fingers. Before the invention of chopsticks, the Chinese used only their hands to eat. One reason why chopsticks were invented is that eating with one’s hands allowed some people to take more food than others. This was considered rude, so using chopsticks, which limited the amount of food that could be taken at one time, was thought to be a more polite practice. Another one was about the great Chinese philosopher Confucius, who was a vegetarian. He objected to the use of knives at the table, feeling that they reminded eaters of the slaughterhouse (屠宰场), so he preferred chopsticks. At first, chopsticks were used only by nobles (贵族). Later on, during the Western Han Dynasty, which began in 202 BC, commoners (平民) began to use chopsticks as well. At that time, people used chopsticks only to eat side dishes; spoons were used for rice and for soups. During the Northern Song Dynasty, which lasted from AD 960 to 1127, noodles became a popular dish. It is very difficult to eat noodles with a spoon, so chopsticks were used more often. Today, chopsticks are the main eating tool in China, Japan, and Vietnam; and people from countries all over the world commonly use this tool while eating Asian dishes. 36. What is the second paragraph mainly about? A. The popularity of chopsticks. B. The process of making chopsticks. C. The method of using chopsticks. D. The reasons for inventing chopsticks. 37. What does the underlined phrase “objected to” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Led to. B. Went against. C Believed in. D. Agreed with. 38. Who frst began to use chopsticks? A Philosophers. B. Common people. C. Nobles. D. Vegetarians. 39. When did eating with chopsticks become common? A. After noodles became popular. B. Just before forks came into use. C. During the Weatern Han Dynasty. D. Before the Northern Song Dynasty. B My mom is an immigrant from China. She speaks Mandarin. She is culturally and ethnically Chinese. She cooks Chinese food every night. She even complains when the local restaurants are not authentic — according to her, most of them are awful. But weirdly enough, she also enjoys American Chinese food. When she wants to meet with her friends, who are also Chinese immigrants, she likes to have lunch with them at P. F. Chang’s. She likes Panda Express, and she is quick to point it out whenever we are at a food court with one. Why, then, does American Chinese food seem to have a bad reputation among Chinese Americans? I see this kind of sentiment on the Internet: how American Chinese food, like Panda Express, isn’t “real” Chinese food, how it’s so much worse than actual Chinese food, how it’s “fake” and “unauthentic,” or when people joke about how eating it would be a disgrace to their family. While a lot of these things are technically true, they give American Chinese food too much flack. American Chinese food deserves to be seen as its own legitimate cuisine. It’s important to distinguish American Chinese food from authentic Chinese food. They are not the same cuisine and should not be treated the same. Like American Chinese food, many foods are borrowed from different cultures. Ramen (拉面) originated from China, but we associate it with Japan because Japanese people made their own version of the dish. Japan also has its own form of curry (咖喱). Should we avoid Japanese ramen and Japanese curry, then? Of course not, and American Chinese cuisine isn’t even the only variation of Chinese cuisine that exists: Indian Chinese cuisine is a popular fusion spin-off, for example. In fact, American Chinese food is often created by Chinese immigrants themselves adapting their cuisine to cater to the American taste palette. It’s not necessarily a bad thing to have to adapt, as people from different countries will always have differences in taste; that’s just how it is. So there’s nothing wrong with going out to an American Chinese restaurant, because chances are that you’re supporting a “real” Chinese business. In this way, American Chinese food actually is real Chinese food. 40. How does the author’s mother like American Chinese restaurants? A. She complains but enjoys them. B. She thinks they are awful enough. C. She regards them as distinct. D. She thinks they deserve no consumers. 41. What does the underlined word in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Praise. B. Evaluation. C. Criticism. D. Comments. 42. Why does the author use “ramen” and “curry” as examples? A. To push us to rethink the origin and history of many foods. B. To prove that Japanese people are good at making new dishes. C. To urge that we should avoid eating Japanese ramen and curry. D. To stress that foods borrowed from other nations are acceptable. 43. What is the author’s attitude towards American Chinese food? A. Cautious. B. Sympathetic. C. Indifferent. D. Ambiguous. C Scientists are now digging into precisely why exercise holds so many benefits for our mental health and memory. The answer, studies say, lies in our brain chemistry. Each time you work up a sweat your body releases feel-good happy hormones (荷尔蒙), including endorphins, dopamine and endocannabinoids, the latter being responsible for the so-called runner’s high. Now researchers are also pointing to myokines (肌肉因子) as an important contributor to the mental health benefits of exercise. When our muscles contract, myokines are released into the bloodstream, helping your muscles and organs communicate. They think this communication increases resilience to stress, reduces symptoms of mental suffering and anxiety and has a direct effect on depression. A 2021 scientific report published in Neuropharmacology showed evidence that myokines boost brain function, like improving memory and mood. “Myokines reduce systemic inflammation (炎症), which is especially beneficial for people with drug-resistant depression whose low mood is linked to high inflammation,” explains Dr Jennifer Heisz, an expert in brain health and associate professor in the department of kinesiology at McMaster University in Canada. A recent study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine showed that treatment for depression can be much more effective when physical activity is added to the usual care. Participants found benefits after 12 weeks of exercising for 30 to 60 minutes a day. “While exercise is not a replacement for professional mental health treatment, physical activity can complement and enhance the effects of the treatment,” says lead researcher Ben Singh, a research fellow at the University of South Australia. “It is amazing to consider how moving our bodies can heal our minds,” says Heisz. Whether you’re cycling, walking around your neighbourhood or doing yoga, getting sweaty is good for your body and mind. To get the biggest overall health boost, the key is to zero in on sports and activities you enjoy, so you’ll keep going back to them. 44. How do myokines boost our mental health? A. By bonding muscles with organs. B. By slowing down our bloodstream. C. By contracting muscles through the body. D. By releasing happy hormones in our brain. 45. What is Ben Singh’s attitude towards physical activity in treatment for depression? A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Uncertain. D. Approving. 46. What does the underlined phrase “zero in on” in the last paragraph mean? A. Adapt to. B. Give up. C. Focus on. D. Put off. 47. How does the author develop the text? A. By making comparisons. B. By presenting research findings. C. By offering suggestions. D. By conducting some experiments. D Nick Rose-Stamey is a lot like Jack Black’s character in School of Rock- a guitarist who discovers a passion for making music accessible to children. Working in the nonprofit arts education sector over the last 10 years raised his awareness of the lack of music programs in public schools, and later inspired his nonprofit, Band in a Bus. “The original idea was to take an old school bus and turn it into the best band class on wheels,” he says. In fact, activities of Band in a Bus don’t actually happen on a bus. It provides instruments, courses, and staffing to students. Kids 18 and under can also participate in enriching summer programs through Band in a Bus, such as Bucket Brigade, five weekly classes where grades K-4 learn rhythm (节奏) and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics) principles through contemporary music. There are also teen bands for grades 7-12 where kids learn to play pop music and develop social and team work skills. When schools went virtual during the COVID-19 period, Rose-Stamey thought it was a shame that instruments were left sitting on shelves instead of in the hands of kids. So he created and distributed more than 1,000 “Band in a Box” DIY kits. Each kit contains small noise makers like kazoos, drumsticks, and shakers, with the intention of introducing a modernized music class experience that meets kids where they are. “It is reported that if a kid has 30 minutes of a performing arts or creative elective every singleday, then that’ll help them develop their social, emotional and leadership skills, because there’s a lot of team work when it comes to making music. You have to learn how to work well with others,” Rose-Stamey says. In the last year, Band in a Bus has worked directly with more than 500 students. “Music is a win-win for everybody,” Rose-Stamey says. “I just hope that someday we can stop making it the first kid out in the dodge ball (躲避球) game.” 48. What motivated Rose-Stamey to establish Band in a Bus? A. The movie School of Rock. B. The band classes in public schools. C. His music learning experiences. D. Insufficient music education. 49. What can we say about Bucket Brigade classes? A. They mainly focus on pop music. B. They are usually organized on a bus. C. They encourage team-building activities. D. They combine music with other subjects. 50. What is the purpose of “Band in a Box”? A. To promote noise making instrumental kits. B. To help students gain access to music at home. C. To lift students’ mood during the COVID-19 period. D. To enable students to take creative electives every day. 51. What can we infer from Rose-Stamey’s words in the last paragraph? A. We should treat every student equally. B. We should give music enough importance. C. We should reconsider the rules of the dodge ball game. D. We should encourage fair competition in various activities. C. Believed in. D. Agreed with. 38. Who frst began to use chopsticks? A. Philosophers. B. Common people. C. Nobles. D. Vegetarians. 39. When did eating with chopsticks become common? A. After noodles became popular. B. Just before forks came into use. C. During the Weatern Han Dynasty. D. Before the Northern Song Dynasty. D 37. B 38. C 39. 根据第二段“Before the invention of chopsticks, the Chinese used only their hands to eat. He objected to the use of knives at the table, feeling that they reminded eaters of the slaughterhouse (屠宰场), so he preferred chopsticks.(在筷子发明之前,中国人只用手吃饭。 根据最后一段“At first, chopsticks were used only by nobles (贵族).(起初,只有贵族才使用筷子)”可知,贵族第一个开始使用筷子。 根据最后一段“During the Northern Song Dynasty, which lasted from AD 960 to 1127, noodles became a popular dish. It is very diffcult to eat noodles with a spoon, so chopsticks were used more often.(在北宋时期(公元960年至1127年),面条成为一种受欢迎的食物。用勺子吃面条是非常困难的,所以人们更多地使用筷子)”可知,面条流行之后,用筷子吃饭变得普遍了。故选A项。 B My mom is an immigrant from China. D. Ambiguous. A 41. C 42. D 43. 根据文章第二段“But weirdly enough, she also enjoys American Chinese food. (事实上,美国中餐通常是由中国移民自己创造的,他们调整自己的美食以迎合美国人的口味。)”可知,作者对美式中餐的态度是支持和同情的,故选D项。 C Scientists are now digging into precisely why exercise holds so many benefits for our mental health and memory. The answer, studies say, lies in our brain chemistry. Each time you work up a sweat, your body releases feel-good happy hormones (荷尔蒙), including endorphins, dopamine and endocannabinoids, the latter being responsible for the so-called runner’s high. 根据文章第二段“When our muscles contract, myokines are released into the bloodstream, helping your muscles and organs communicate. They think this communication increases resilience to stress, reduces symptoms of mental suffering and anxiety and has a direct effect on depression.(当我们的肌肉收缩时,肌肉因子被释放到血液中,帮助你的肌肉和器官进行交流。他们认为,这种交流增加了对压力的弹性,减少了精神痛苦和焦虑的症状,并对抑郁有直接影响。)”可知肌肉因子通过将肌肉与器官结合来促进我们的心理健康。故选A项。 根据文章第四段““While exercise is not a replacement for professional mental health treatment, physical activity can complement and enhance the effects of the treatment,”(“虽然运动不能替代专业的心理健康治疗,但体育活动可以补充和增强治疗的效果,”)”可知Ben Singh’s认为体育活动可以补充和增强治疗抑郁效果,所以Ben Singh’s对于治疗抑郁的体育活动的态度是赞同的。 根据文章最后一段划线短语之前““It is amazing to consider how moving our bodies can heal our minds,” says Heisz. Whether you’re cycling, walking around your neighbourhood or doing yoga, getting sweaty is good for your body and mind. To get the biggest overall health boost, the key is to(海兹说:“考虑到移动我们身体如何治愈我们的大脑,这令人惊讶。”无论你是骑自行车,在附近散步还是做瑜伽,出汗对你的身心都有好处。要获得最大的整体健康提升,关键是)”以及划线短语之后“sports and activities you enjoy, so you’ll keep going back to them.(你喜欢的运动和活动,所以你会继续回到它们身边。)” 通读全文,再根据第二段“They think this communication increases resilience to stress, reduces symptoms of mental suffering and anxiety and has a direct effect on depression. (他们认为这种沟通可以增强对压力的抵抗力,减少精神痛苦和焦虑的症状,并对抑郁症有直接影响)”和第三段“A 2021 scientific report published in Neuropharmacology showed evidence that myokines boost brain function, like improving memory and mood. (2021年发表在《神经药理学》上的一份科学报告显示,有证据表明肌细胞因子可以增强大脑功能,如改善记忆和情绪)”以及第四段“A recent study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine showed that treatment for depression can be much more effective when physical activity is added to the usual care. (最近发表在《英国运动医学杂志》上的一项研究表明,在日常护理中增加体育活动可以更有效地治疗抑郁症)”可推知,文章前四段集中列举了研究结果,所以作者是通过列举研究结果的方式展开文章的。故选B项。 D Nick Rose-Stamey is a lot like Jack Black’s character in School of Rock- a guitarist who discovers a passion for making music accessible to children. D 49. D 50. B 51.
