What will you do when one of the few bookstores in your neighborhood shuts down? If you’re Latanya DeVaughn, you will make a new and improved one! As a mom and writer, she had always dreamed of opening her own bookstore, so after watching another close its doors for good, she saw her chance.
While Latanya said every neighborhood deserved a bookstore, actually making it happen simply wasn’t possible. What she came up with instead was to turn a bus into a bookmobile! With the help of her community, she raised money for her dream and, at the end of 2021, it came true! Bronx Bound Books rolled out in style as a bus with orange cube bookshelves. “People love the way it smells,” Latanya added. “One woman said the wood smell makes her feel like she’s at home.”
Although the bookstore on wheels carries around 30,000 new and used books, it has more room than you might expect! Latanya also makes sure to prepare books with a variety of characters, so all readers can see themselves in the pages. Of course, her collection also features works of noted Black authors like James Baldwin and Alice Walker. “It’s meant to be that way,” she explained, “because I remember going to bookstores and having to look through books just to find someone I felt I could identify with.”
Setting up her bookstore in a new spot each day, Latanya is doing her part to make sure that everyone in the neighborhood has books to read. That’s what Bronx Bound Books is for. “I can’t open up a bookstore on every corner, but I can probably pop up on tons of different corners,” she said.
Thanks to Latanya and her Bronx Bound Books, the town is becoming a heaven for book lovers day by day. I’m sure that the little bookstore will continue to develop quickly!

6. Why is Bronx Bound Books open?

B. To raise money for Latanya DeVaughn’s dream.
C. To make reading accessible to everyone in the neighborhood.
D. To open up a bookstore on every comer across the world.
7. What does the author think of Bronx Bound Books?
A. Alarming. B. Affordable. C. Creative. D. Promising.

As evening fell, five people moved nervously around a baby elephant. All the science, all the ideas leading up to this moment, checked out. But now, it was a question of practice: Would this baby elephant like the newly developed baby formula (配方)? Would her body react well to it?
The five people, keepers at Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, northern Kenya’s only elephant orphanage (孤儿院), held one another’s hands. They hoped that she would be healthy. As baby Sera gulped down one bottle after another, they smiled with relief. And in the days that followed, the weak two-week-old put on weight and had the strength to play with the other baby elephants at the orphanage.
The keepers celebrated the breakthrough. The formula was simple and the main ingredient (成分) of the new formula was easy to get: goat milk.
The team had been thinking about how to improve their milk recipe for a long time, says Katie Rowe, co-founder of Reteti, in the community-owned Namunyak Conservancy. The orphanage had used human baby formula since its establishment in 2016, but costs were high, cans had to be bought from foreign countries, and ingredients weren’t always natural. “I was looking at the ingredients, believing there were better choices out there,” Rowe says.
The new formula has also been a success for the Samburu community, which sells goat milk to the orphanage. Each morning, Stamen Lemajong’s family and others travel along tree-lined roads to sell more than 150 liters of milk to the orphanage. “We use the money from selling goat milk for everything the kids to school, paying hospital bills,” Lemajong says. “And in times of hardship last year, it has been a huge help. Then we could even buy food with it.”
8. What were the five people doing toward the evening?
A. Examining a newborn baby. B. Treating an ill elephant.
C. Having a science lesson. D. Testing a new formula.
9. What is one reason why the team chose goat milk?
A. It is less expensive. B. It tastes more delicious.
C. It has safer ingredients. D. It is more popular worldwide.
10. What can we infer from Paragraph 5 about the new formula?
A. It brings local people huge benefits.
B. It has to deal with a lot of challenges.
C. It lets kids realize the value of hard work.
D. It makes the Samburu community famous.
11. In which part of a newspaper can we probably find this text?
A. Sports. B. Culture. C. Society. D. Education.
D
Imagine this: You walk into a place and the atmosphere is light and airy. The subtle scent of coffee beans fills the air and everyone that approaches you is friendly and welcoming. You’re comfortable and feel like you belong. As in most cities it’s a place where people meet, discuss ideas, and conduct business. After taking a few sips of that Caramel Macchiato, you immediately get that feeling of energy and optimism. Perhaps it’s partly due to the caffeine and sugar rush, or maybe it’s that the presence of a Starbucks typically indicates a city on the rise.
In December of 2017, Trenton’s first Starbuck’s café was opened to the public at 102 Warren Street. Walking in, people living in Trenton scream at everything about this café, from the diverse but local stuff to the Trenton themed décor (室内装饰) and art. To make things better, this Starbucks also serves as an “opportunity café” which essentially means the young people in our communities are recruited and offered job training and employment. This program not only uplifts our youth, but also increases the amount of minority business in the city.
In the interviews with customers, a trend in responses arose. To many, the Starbucks was a “favorite place to stop in after work” and provided “a very relaxing environment.” The staff were often highly praised, noted as being friendly, helpful, and working in harmony. The interior décor of the café struck a lot of people’s attention, given the familiarity of the atmosphere. Painted on the walls, all around the store, are murals (壁画) with bright, colorful, graffiti-like designs very sui generis in Trenton, showcasing local monuments like the State House and the famous “Trenton Makes” bridge.
This new Starbucks brings a sense of modernity to Downtown Trenton and reminds us that our city is always developing. Open from 6 a. m. until 7 p.m. every day, the building is hardly ever empty. This space is made for everyone in Trenton, even the non-coffee lovers.
12. What is the major function of Paragraph 1 in the passage?
A. To present an introduction to the topic.
B. To set a background for the main theme.
C. To summarize the main idea of the passage.
D. To describe a common phenomenon for the readers.
13. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. People are amazed at the number of job opportunities provided by the Starbucks.
B. “Opportunity café” program helps achieve booming economy and bring spiritual benefits.
C. Most respondents regarded the Starbucks as a harmonious and entertaining workplace.
D. Numerous people are attracted to stop in after work by the murals with original designs.
14. What does the underlined word “sui generis” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Substantial. B. Delicate. C. Inspirational. D. Unique.
15 What could be the best title for the passage?
A. Starbucks Is Designed for Everyone
B. Starbucks Gains Popularity in Trenton
C. Starbucks Sets an Atmosphere of Progress
D. Starbucks Creates More Job Opportunities

第二节 读后续写(25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When school was over, the day was fading and it started to drizzle(毛毛雨). I stood at the school gate, with a loaded backpack on my shoulders. It was Friday again: a weekend of joy with unlimited sleeping hours and dinner courses specially made to my taste, a weekend at home. I waved goodbye to my friends as they jumped into their fathers’ warm and comfortable cars. Curiously, this gave rise to a disturbing feeling in me. It was not exactly what they called jealousy, but something like dismay(沮丧). I knew all I could expect was an old bike Mom would ride along on, with the badly-oiled chain creaking(嘎吱作响) against the wheel to announce her arrival.
Every Friday when Mom came to pick me up for the weekend, it was a moment full of great expectation and great unease. I always felt my face burning as we rode our way in and out of the numerous cars and saw my friends’ faces sticking out of the car windows. It was like stepping into a ballroom with beautifully dressed ladies and finding yourself in a smelly T-shirt.
To tell you the truth Mom is quite a headache once in a while. She just looks a homely middle-aged housewife. Being a practitioner of DIY, she knits most of my sweaters, chiefly in old styles. Whenever caught by some curious classmates asking what brand my sweaters are, I’d force a smile and reply in a half joking manner: homemade.
I couldn’t remember when I started to find her such an embarrassment. As a little boy, I relied on her so much. She had been working at home, cooking in the kitchen, knitting by the lamp or riding across town to buy me a book I badly needed. It had always been much fun riding with mom. But just now there seemed to be something standing between us, something that made her so strange to me and me to her.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Today she showed up in a raincoat.

Mom tried to cover me with the back of the raincoat again as a storm set in.

Imagine this: You walk into a place and the atmosphere is light and airy. The subtle scent of coffee beans fills the air and everyone that approaches you is friendly and welcoming. You’re comfortable and feel like you belong. As in most cities, it’s a place where people meet, discuss ideas, and conduct business.

13. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

D. Unique.

To tell you the truth, Mom is quite a headache once in a while.

Mom tried to cover me with the back of the raincoat again as a storm set in.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Today she showed up in a raincoat. Seeing her standing in the heavy rain with all the body wet, I finally could not control myself and shouted at her, “Why do you look so flustered? I don’t need you to take me home. I feel ashamed to have a mother like you!” Suddenly, Mom was shocked and silent. Maybe, she had never thought that I would have that feeling of her appearance and our home condition. She said nothing and just covered the raincoat on me. I pushed it away wildly.
Mom tried to cover me with the back of the raincoat again as a storm set in. With a smile, she said, “Dear son, I’m trying my best to earn our living, and I’m sure that if we work harder, we will get whatever we want in the future.” Hearing her words, I felt embarrassed. I thought of the time when she knitted in the deep night and cooked for me in the early morning. Yes, she had always been doing whatever she could to make me live well. But I was still unsatisfied. I had known that if I wanted to get what others had, I should spare no efforts to study hard and get it by myself.
